Hello there, Mark Fennell here. Sorry it's been
0:02
so long since I've been in this feed.
0:04
It's very exciting news. We
0:06
are putting the finishing touches on the
0:08
brand new TV season of Stuff The
0:10
British Style. Eight new episodes will be
0:12
coming to you very soon on ABC
0:15
TV in Australia and CBC Canada and other
0:17
platforms around the world. Very excited to show
0:19
you. But while you're waiting, there's
0:21
something I'd like you to have a listen to.
0:23
So if you want to talk about countries left
0:26
in the wake of the British Empire, you can't
0:28
go past India. A good friend of mine, Avani
0:30
Dias, the ABC South Asia correspondent, has been
0:32
on the hunt to understand the man at
0:34
the very top of India's power, one of
0:36
the world's most popular world leaders, Narendra Modi.
0:39
He's now in charge of the most populous
0:41
nation on Earth, the world's biggest democracy. But
0:44
what makes him tick? Where did he come
0:46
from and what are his plans next for India? It's
0:49
all part of Avani and the ABC's
0:52
new podcast Looking for Modi. Here's
0:54
a taste. Sharika
0:56
kar kar or
0:58
Samayka pal pal. Narendra
1:01
Modi is one of the most
1:03
powerful people in the world. He
1:05
became India's prime minister 10 years
1:08
ago and he's changed this country
1:10
of more than a billion people.
1:13
In fact, it's overtaken China as
1:15
the most populous country on the
1:17
globe. Narendra
1:28
Modi has made India the world's
1:30
fastest growing economy. Countries like Australia
1:32
and the US are desperate to
1:35
get close to him. Before the
1:37
last time I saw someone on the stage
1:39
here was Bruce Springsteen and he didn't get
1:41
the welcome the Prime Minister Modi has got.
1:44
And he's been criticized for
1:46
threatening crucial democratic rights. Some
1:49
fear him. But when it
1:51
comes to the man himself, there are
1:53
so many myths and stories about Narendra
1:56
Modi. what
2:00
is real and what is a propaganda. I'm
2:02
Avani Dias, the ABC's South Asia
2:04
correspondent, and I've been living in
2:07
India for the last few years,
2:09
but I feel like I'm only just
2:11
peeling back the layers on who Narendra
2:14
Modi is. This is
2:16
a man about whom an awful lot
2:18
has been written and said he's been
2:20
a subject of intense scrutiny, considerable speculation.
2:23
There's his involvement with a group
2:25
called the RSS, which is either
2:27
like the Boy Scouts or a
2:29
right wing paramilitary group, depending on
2:32
who you ask. RSS
2:34
is not a political organization. You know
2:36
that we believe in man
2:38
making only. And then there's
2:40
the Hindu temple, which has recently been built
2:42
on the side of an old Muslim mosque
2:45
that was torn down by mobs
2:47
and fueled riots. There are
2:50
hundreds of Hindus just climbing over
2:52
the barbed wire fence. The sapran
2:54
flag of Hinduism is raised. Events
2:56
like that have led some to the
2:58
question whether Modi is trying to turn
3:00
India into an exclusively
3:03
Hindu country. I've gone
3:05
backwards and forwards from thinking that Modi
3:07
was a very hard line Hindu nationalist
3:10
to thinking that he was definitely not
3:12
a kind of liberalizing figure, but somebody
3:14
who is more of a modern izer.
3:16
And in the end, I think that
3:19
Modi is the ultimate power politician. He
3:21
wants to stay in power. And
3:23
that's not even all of it. He
3:26
often portrays himself as a single man,
3:28
but he has a wife who he
3:30
left decades ago and has tried to
3:32
keep quiet. But life
3:35
was absolutely vast of you know,
3:37
a poverty stricken person. There's no
3:39
doubting Narendra Modi has changed India.
3:42
When I first visited the US
3:45
as a prime minister, India was
3:47
the 10th largest economy in the
3:50
world. Today, India
3:52
is the fifth largest
3:55
of all thoseoe But
4:04
he's about to run for election again,
4:06
and the polls suggest he'll win. So
4:08
who is this man? And are
4:10
the stories he tells about his life true?
4:14
It's been hard trying to get people
4:16
to talk to me openly about Narendra
4:19
Modi. They're worried there will
4:21
be consequences. But in
4:23
my new podcast Looking for Modi, I'm going
4:25
to get some answers. I'm travelling
4:27
around India speaking to people who grew up
4:29
with him, who went to school with him
4:32
and those who've studied the way he leads
4:34
the country now. And yes, I'm
4:36
going to try and find his wife. That's
4:39
Looking for Modi, available from March
4:41
12 on the ABC Listen app
4:43
and wherever you get your podcasts.
