I’ve been sitting here staring at my computer screen trying to figure out how to start this off. What words to use, what things to say. How exactly do I describe the experience that is “Dreamboy”? Then it hit me. My comparison is as follows, I have no regrets, & it’s gonna be a weird one: "50 Shades of Grey" meets "E.T.", then let it marinate in the team from “Welcome to Nightvale”. Also there are musical numbers.
Normally I’d write up a small synopsis or summary of the plot, but part of me feels like I shouldn’t for two reasons. One: I don’t want to spoil anything in any way. Two: I feel like I barely know how to summarize it. I stated “surreal” as part of the genres for a reason. But if I were to give it a go, I think my quick description would be this: “A young man finds himself unexpectedly wrapped up in a bizarre plot to save a Zebra from a zoo. Alongside him are some creepy girl scouts, and his love interest he met on Grindr”.
In a seamless segway, I found the musical aspect of this show to be both entertaining, unique, and unexpected. While overall the audio & general sound was really good, these moments are what stood out the most to me. They did a fantastic job conveying emotion & thought process. Out of the many podcasts I’ve listened to, Dreamboy so far has definitely had the best use of theatrical musical moments. My favorite was during episode six, wherein the Main Character’s anxiety & rumination turn into an incredibly relatable song about the stresses of new relationships, and that sickening feeling you get when the other person doesn’t respond to you for a long time. We’ve all been there, and boy is it rough.
One big thing that I really need to bring up is this: this show is NOT for younger audiences. There are several graphic sex scenes, disturbing moments, and the concept of sexual abuse / assault being a turn-on for one of the characters. For me on a personal level, I found these to be a bit too unsettling or uncomfortable. Not so much the sexual scenes, but more so the one character’s interest in being sexually abused. I understand it is consensual in the story, but it left me feeling very uneasy. Ignore the pun, but it was genuinely a turn-off for me. I just can’t vibe with that. That aside, I actually found the sex scenes to be very well done & impressive.
Dreamboy was a grossly enthralling listen. An abstractly bizarre story with many elements that draw you in to keep listening. In truth, I wasn’t fully sure what was going on during much of this, but I couldn’t turn away. There’s something special about this show, but I really don’t know how to put it into words. It definitely isn’t for everyone, but I think there’s a hidden gem aspect to it. Unfortunately, from what I’ve been able to gather, it looks as though it was cancelled after the first season. It has been quite a few years since it came out, so I’m doubtful there is much hope for a future. But who knows? CM Punk returned to WWE after almost a 10-year absence, so never say never I guess.
