the Seahawks will come out East to play

0:59

this Eagles team, they come away with a seventeen

1:01

to nine victory in both of those occasions,

1:03

we'll break down exactly what we saw. We're gonna save

1:05

the big picture talk a little bit for next week

1:07

as we look to twenty twenty and beyond for this

1:10

Eagles franchise. But we'll focus here

1:12

on this game and some of those things that we

1:14

took away from the film after

1:16

watching both the offense and the defense.

1:18

But before we get into our chat with Greg, just a

1:20

4:14

nuts and bolts. Here's chalk Talk now with Greg

4:16

co Sell.

4:19

Let's get down the business. It's time

4:22

for chalk Talk. Joining

4:27

us once again here on chalk Talk on the Eagle Line and

4:29

the Sky podcast fueled by Gatorade, our friend

4:31

Greg co Sell from his cushy

4:33

suite at NFL Films in Mount Laurel,

4:35

New Jersey. Greg, Welcome

4:38

to the Visional Round week of the playoffs. Obviously

4:40

a look a tough loss for the Eagles.

4:42

On Sunday afternoon, seventeen

4:44

to nine to the Seattle Seahawks. They

4:46

lose Carson Witz after the second drive of the game,

4:48

and obviously it was just you know, one injury,

4:51

one injury on top of another for this Eagles

4:53

team leading up to this point, and that was the one

4:55

that they could not overcome. But

4:58

let's let's kind of start there at first. I think

5:00

a lot of fans obviously we've seen the hit

5:02

right of jadeveon Clowney on Carson

5:04

Wentz. But take us through what the film show, what

5:07

led up to that point. How did Carson Wentz

5:09

get to that point when he was hit. Well,

5:12

it's actually a very well designed play

5:15

because what they did is they had Boston Scott

5:18

go in motion across the formation. He was

5:20

going to run a wheel route, which is a vertical route,

5:23

and I forget who the wide receiver was on that side,

5:25

but he ran a vertical route as well. So

5:27

they were pulling the defense out on

5:29

that side of the field, the left side of the formation,

5:32

and they wanted to throw a screen to Sanders

5:35

and to that side so that you remove

5:37

the defense from that side and Sayamalu

5:40

and Kelsey would be out in front leading, but

5:42

poon Afford the d tackle for the Seahawks

5:44

did an amazing job reading it and

5:47

pretty much hugged Sanders taking

5:49

away to throw. And when you throw

5:51

a screen like that, there's no other read. So

5:54

Wentz was kind of forced to run and he ran to his

5:56

right, and of course we all know what happened after

5:58

that, but it really resulted it

6:01

was a case where the offense had a well designed

6:03

play and the defense did an excellent job.

6:05

One player, Punaford, did an excellent job

6:08

and therefore the play was not there. Yeah,

6:10

and obviously Carson sticks

6:12

with the team through the next few plays. They

6:15

did get a first down off a penalty and

6:17

they were able to move the ball a little bit, but they

6:19

ended up punting on the drive. He goes to the sideline,

6:22

reportedly, you know, by from teammates that checked

6:24

himself into the protocol and that was

6:26

that. And to me after that, I mean,

6:28

I you know, Doug Peterson said after the game that they kind

6:30

of had to cut the playbook down. They want to cater to what

6:32

Josh McCown strengths were. Uh, you know,

6:34

they just couldn't they couldn't get into a rhythm they

6:37

were able to really there were times where they did get

6:39

into a rhythm. They were able to string some places together.

6:41

So I kind of spoke a little bit out of turn. There there were

6:43

times where they did get into a rhythm and move the ball.

6:46

To me, it was just such the big thing that stands

6:48

out is situational football was such

6:50

a strength for this team, especially down

6:52

the stretch. Third down they were outstanding. Red

6:54

zone they were outstanding. And then when you look at the

6:56

final numbers from Sunday, they

6:59

finished three of eleven on third down, they

7:01

finished over three in the red zone, they're over

7:03

two on fourth down. When you lose

7:05

by eight points, I mean, though those plays,

7:07

those those add up, and those the leads have missed

7:10

opportunities that they could have put points on the board.

7:13

Yeah, the red zone was critical, and I thought

7:15

that they really struggled. And again, if you're a Seahawks

7:17

fan, you say, the Seahawks did a great job with the red

7:19

zone defense, but the Eagles had a

7:21

couple of real opportunities in the red zone.

7:24

And I think what the Seahawks

7:26

did extremely well was played their zone concepts,

7:29

both in the tight red zone and the high red

7:31

zone, and they played a lot of zone.

7:34

They played sort of that red zone, cover two,

7:36

cover four, where the safeties

7:38

are split and you have kind of have that middle defender

7:40

because the field is shorter. He's kind

7:42

of a middle hole defender. You know,

7:44

he can call whatever you want. But

7:47

they did a really nice job. The one

7:49

that really stood out to me was that

7:51

first possession of the third quarter where they started

7:53

it off with the thirty two yard at or arts. Really

7:56

well designed play against Cover three,

7:58

nice high low concept, beautifully

8:00

executed, and then they get down its

8:03

third goal and the Seahawks

8:05

did a really nice job in

8:07

their zone concept that that red zone, that tight

8:09

red zone cover two, cover four of

8:11

taking away in a sense, both

8:14

throws because McCown looked to Goddard on the slant

8:16

that was taken away by right. Then he

8:18

looked to his left to arths but that was taken away

8:20

by the safety McDonald and he felt the

8:22

pocket closing in and he

8:25

was sacked by right. Now. How many times

8:27

have we seen in that situation Carson

8:29

Wentz make a play And sometimes the red

8:31

zone requires a quarterback to make a second

8:34

reaction play, which Carson Wentz

8:36

has been very very good at in his career, and

8:38

they turn into touchdowns. Obviously that

8:40

did not happen here and McCown was

8:43

sacked and they had to kick a field goal. Yeah, I

8:45

think there were times, you know, they got into

8:47

that area of the field and you know, there

8:49

was a three play sequence that I can remember where

8:52

you know, they take a delay of game where you know they're

8:54

inside the five, and now the delay of game sends

8:56

them back. Now they're close to the ten. You get a

8:58

dropped snap that on a run where

9:00

Miles Sanders if he had taken the handoff, if he had

9:02

taken a clean you know, there there was

9:04

room the offensive line had gotten movement. There wasn't

9:06

anybody really immediately at that second level. They

9:08

would have been able to get close up to the goal line, if

9:10

not to reach into the end zone. Uh.

9:13

And then the next play they took a sack, and I think when you start

9:15

looking at those things, you know, those self inflicted

9:17

moons wounds do mount up. The Eagles took

9:19

some penalties, a lot of false starts in this game. I gotta

9:22

think the changing cadence from Carson

9:24

Wentz to Josh McCown play a little bit of a part in

9:26

that as well. Um, you know, there was just a lot

9:28

of those scenarios. The ball ends up on the ground three

9:30

times. I believe it was just one of those

9:32

things where you know, obviously unable to

9:34

reach the end zone. It's tough to win stuff in one the game

9:36

like that against the Seattle Seahawks, especially when you

9:39

got a quarterback on the other side is playing out of his mind.

9:41

We'll get to that in a little bit. But

9:43

the other thing, too is I think that plays into this

9:45

is the inability of McCown.

9:48

Not because he's not capable, it's just he's

9:50

not the start of getting all the reps yea to really

9:53

change plays with the line of scrimmage. Because I

9:55

remember when the Eagles played the

9:58

Patriots. I remember watching Bill Belichick's

10:00

press conference during the week and he talked

10:02

about the fact that Wentz was so good at

10:04

the line of scrimmage and that's something that

10:06

you had to really be aware of defensively because

10:09

he had such a good feel for defenses. And this

10:11

is Bill Belichick talking about it. So

10:13

I think you'll lose a little of that, you

10:15

know. And when I say a little of that, that's

10:17

a big deal, particularly

10:19

against a defense with the Seahawks that's you

10:21

know, not that detailed and complicated,

10:24

so you know you're able to do those kinds

10:26

of things, and I think you'll lose a little of that when

10:28

your backup quarterback comes in, who doesn't get a lot of

10:30

snaps during the week. Yeah, and it's a great point because

10:32

even Doug Peterson mentioned that on that final play,

10:35

that fourth down play down in the red zone that

10:37

essentially ended the game, there was

10:39

a kill on that play that Josh

10:41

McCown had tried to communicate, but not everyone got

10:43

the call, so not everyone's on the same page, so

10:45

you know, he wasn't able to get rid of the football. Now a lot

10:48

of people say, oh, well, at least just throw it up, get the ball out

10:50

of your hand, But if you're not, if people aren't

10:52

where you expecting to be, it's tough to

10:54

do in that kind of situation. So, yeah,

10:57

it was. It was obviously, it was just a tough performance.

10:59

You hate to see it end that way after what this team

11:01

had done to be able to claw back into contention.

11:04

They win the NFC East second time in three

11:06

years, they go to the playoffs for the third straight

11:08

season, But look, it was there. We'll

11:10

talk big picture next week. I think looking

11:13

at this game, certainly one of the big things was

11:15

losing Carson Wentz and I think also

11:17

once he went out, I think if McCown

11:20

was playing with a full deck or even a half

11:22

deck of you know what the Eagles have in terms

11:24

of their overall talent on the roster. You know,

11:26

if the offensive line is intact, if Brandon Brooks

11:28

and Lane Johnson are out there, and then now it's okay,

11:30

we can they can try and run the ball here with Miles

11:33

Sanders, they can try and get downhill. They just they

11:35

couldn't get a ton going on the ground. There were some

11:37

plays here and there. I thought Miles Sanders round

11:39

the ball fairly well. There were some yards I thought he left

11:41

on the field overall, but I thought that he was able to

11:43

make some people miss. He busted some nice runs

11:45

out to the outside. We saw him on the toss

11:47

plays. I mean he tried to make them, especially with

11:49

that bum ankle. Him making plays I thought

11:51

was good to see on their running

11:54

game end in the passing game as well. No,

11:56

and I thought they actually had some success running to the

11:58

perimeter in this game. Uh, you

12:00

know, I think the dynamic of the game changed

12:03

obviously, that's not her profound statement

12:05

when Winz went out, and I think probably as

12:07

an offense, it's not a sense

12:09

of desperation, but I think there's just a sense

12:11

that some of the things that you had planned on

12:13

doing, that you felt very good about doing,

12:16

just are no longer really part of your playbook

12:18

at that point, and I think that changes your

12:20

whole approach. And I think

12:22

it was evident watching the tape, you know, and and look,

12:25

at the end of the day, we've talked about this all year. They've

12:27

been able to overcome it. But you know, they're

12:29

they're playing with Dean ta Burnett, they're playing with

12:31

Sheldon Gibson, who I think had nine ten eleven

12:34

snaps. So you know, you're just in a tough

12:36

spot overall. And then

12:38

when you start with your your backup, you know,

12:40

quarterback, you're it's it's just a different scenario.

12:42

Yeah. I mean, we've talked so much over the last few weeks

12:44

about two of the thing that staples that the Eagles

12:47

have done over this winning streak was

12:49

moving the pocket, and you're not going to do that as much with

12:51

Josh mccount of the game and the screen

12:53

game. The screen game almost disappeared on the

12:55

back end of you after that Carson Wentz injury.

12:58

They didn't run too many screens, and the ones they did

13:00

didn't go all that well. Yeah,

13:03

I think when you look at change in the game

13:05

plan, one thing that they certainly went more

13:07

towards was, you know, some of these vertical concepts,

13:09

the three level stretches were very effective. We

13:12

saw the one that you mentioned, the thirty two yards or arts.

13:14

I agree, extremely well designed

13:16

play to beat that cover three

13:19

boundary lock coverage. I thought that they did,

13:21

you know, worked some of those three level stretches pretty well.

13:23

Goddard caught one, greg Ward caught one,

13:25

uh you know, Shelton Gibson that was targeted on the

13:27

past interfere it's down the field on one. So certainly

13:30

they tried to use those kind of concepts

13:32

that played more into Josh McCown's wheelhouse.

13:35

But at the end of the day, just just not enough

13:37

and it was unfortunate. This is a group that, like

13:39

I said, battled through what was the last

13:41

few weeks of the season, no question.

13:45

Yeah, and you're right about a lot of those concepts. It was,

13:47

you know, those three level stretches, but it's also a high

13:49

low concept at it core, and they did a

13:52

nice job with those. Now, I thought, again, if

13:54

you were looking at it from the Seahawks perspective, and of

13:56

course I'm looking at it from both perspectives,

13:58

because you know, obviously going forward for me

14:00

on the matchup show, I have to really look at the Seahawks

14:02

as well. You know, if you're a Seahawks fan, you're

14:04

probably all concerned because there were an awful lot of voids

14:07

in their own coverage concepts, whether

14:09

it was split safety or whether it was cover

14:11

three, and that's something you'd have to be concerned about.

14:13

But Eagles did a nice job exploiting

14:15

that at times. Yep, no, no question.

14:18

Well let's go over to the defensive side. Certainly

14:20

some players, some breakdowns we can discuss. One

14:23

thing that was present from the opening drive

14:25

was Fletcher Cox was so outstanding

14:28

in this game. He was unblockable. We saw the matchups

14:30

with Joey Hunt that I know you must have

14:32

been chuckling out watching the film back this morning. But

14:35

whether it was him, whether it was DJ Fluker, you

14:38

know, whoever, it didn't matter who Fletcher was

14:40

lined up against. When he was one on one, he was winning

14:42

on Sunday, no question, And

14:44

of course we talked about that last week. I actually

14:46

did that on the NFL Matchup show as well from

14:49

the first matchup because we knew they would do that again

14:51

and they came right out and did that. Because

14:54

it's just it's a mismatch.

14:56

Fletcher Cox on Joey Hunt is a mismatch, and

14:58

the Eagles did a lot of that five across front

15:01

with Cox the zero technique and Bradham

15:03

the stand up three technique. That was

15:05

really part of what they did out of their dime where

15:08

they played with six defensive backs and they

15:10

were very effective with it. You know,

15:12

the issue you always face and it turned out

15:14

to be at times an issue in this game

15:16

was the second reaction plays by Russell Wilson.

15:19

They were a big factor in this game. Yeah,

15:21

you mentioned those five across fronts the diamond

15:23

fronts real quickly before we get to Russell

15:25

Wilson. I thought that Seattle in

15:27

the last three quarters of the game had

15:29

a nice adjustment to some of those looks where you

15:32

know, we've broke down a play on Eagles game plan. You did

15:34

a great job of breaking the play down how

15:36

they had used you know, Liji Bradham

15:38

up on the line of scrimmage and they would slide. You know,

15:40

at the end of the game, they were sliding the protection

15:43

away from Bradham, not believing that

15:45

he would come and he would get matched up on the running back and

15:47

you get Malcolm Jenkins flying in and all that. So

15:49

you did a great job of breaking that down. What

15:52

I saw on film this morning was Seattle

15:54

did a very good nice job of later in the game after

15:56

if they had seen our Fletcher Cox, They're doing the same

15:58

thing to us, slide towards

16:01

Bradham and now saying Okay, we're gonna

16:03

bring a tight end in and we're gonna leave the tight

16:05

end one on one with a defensive end

16:07

now forcing Okay, if you're gonna green dog off the tight

16:09

end, you're coming from further distance to

16:11

try and get after Wilson. And the ball was able to come out.

16:14

And I thought that was a really nice adjustment by

16:16

Seattle against what the Eagles were trying to do to force

16:18

those one on once. I thought they also

16:20

did a really good job, Seattle of understanding

16:23

that the Eagles are a green dog defense,

16:25

and they had the back appt Homer, who

16:28

was very good at this, by the way, in this game, absolutely

16:31

aware of who the green Dogger

16:33

would be based on the on that

16:35

five across and who was really

16:38

who had him so to speak. You know, they

16:40

knew who would have Homer and then he

16:42

went to get someone else and they did a really

16:44

nice job with that. Yeah, and you mentioned

16:47

third down or you know, did Russell Wilson

16:49

the second reaction plays? But third

16:51

down defense? I mean they were eight for fifteen

16:53

on third down fifty three

16:55

percent on the day, and that's that

16:57

was tough to covercome some of those and

17:00

longs that were really just kicks

17:02

in the gut. I mean, some of those we know Russell

17:04

Wilson making plays with his legs, he

17:06

gets outside the pocket, he's able to create and

17:08

you know, I think a lot of people will say, all right, well, what happened?

17:11

What was the overarching theme on these? And I'll

17:13

tell you what, like watching him, there were times where

17:15

the defensive line won quickly. You know, I can remember

17:18

one play in my mind where Fletcher Cox, he clubs

17:20

the left guard, gets into the backfield, Russell

17:22

Wilson has to get off his spot. He breaks contain

17:24

outside to his right and runs for a first down. Then

17:26

there were others where the coverage was tight

17:29

and Russell Wilson just had time and then bought more time

17:31

and bought more time, the rush didn't get home and he

17:33

was able to make a play outside the pocket and throw for a

17:35

first down. So you know, there were I think both

17:37

ends of it. I think a lot of people say, oh, the rush wasn't good enough,

17:40

the coverage wasn't good enough. Overall, they just

17:42

didn't get enough where both were on the same page

17:44

on the same play to create big plays.

17:46

Just one sack, no turnovers on the night for

17:48

the Eagles defense. Yeah, and I think

17:50

the secondary action ones were really

17:52

critical. I mean, you talk about he

17:55

hit Metcalf for twenty four yards on third and eleven

17:58

on that first quarter field goal drive. That

18:00

was actually a case where Jenkins green dog and

18:02

he actually got in clean and Wilson

18:05

moved away from him and made a great throw to Metcalf

18:07

who adjusted his route. Then

18:10

you know, I thought, I thought that two key

18:13

plays theoretically. I mean, there's always

18:15

a lot of key plays in a game, but that drive

18:17

at the end of the first half where

18:19

he hits Metcalf on mesh, which was

18:21

really beautifully designed. And

18:24

then the following play I think I can't

18:26

remember whether it was the next player or the play after

18:28

when he hit More and that was a sex second

18:30

reaction play. And those two plays,

18:32

I mean, they covered fifty two yards in

18:34

a heartbeat and that's what got him down inside the five,

18:37

which of course ended with a Lynch touchdown.

18:39

Yeah. The one thing about that David Moore catch

18:41

that I found him to be impressive. From a Seattle

18:43

standpoint. You give a lot of credit to David

18:46

Moore because he's running across the field

18:48

on a crossing route and Craven la Bloc

18:50

is right on his hip. If he does

18:53

not come back, mean he mean David Moore. If David

18:55

Moore does not come back to the football on

18:57

that throw, remember car le Black, he

18:59

lunches to tackle more. If he

19:01

had just kept running east west, he

19:03

probably is tackled for a medium game and

19:06

who knows what happens after that. But since

19:08

he came back and attacked the football, when le Blanc

19:10

reaches out, he's grasping nothing but air.

19:12

He gets a bunch of grass and that's it. As more

19:15

than retreats seven yards in the backfield

19:17

behind where he was and then runs for a big

19:19

game. Give a lot of credit, a

19:21

lot of credit to David Moore in that instance

19:23

because he made a huge play. Obviously, Russell Wilson,

19:26

you know, he mentioned he was outstanding and making

19:28

those second reaction throws, those plays outside of

19:30

structure. You know, sometimes

19:32

those go well. You know, I can think back

19:34

to that last one in week twelve, the last time these two teams

19:37

played, Russell Wilson was breaking the pocket, was running

19:39

around and ran into a couple of sacks. The Eagle sacked

19:41

the six times in that game. So that's kind

19:43

of the double edged sword of playing that way.

19:45

In this game, he was outstanding and made a lot

19:47

of the big players that changed the outcome, no

19:50

without question, and that's what you always can

19:52

get in any given week with Russell Wilson.

19:55

And then there were some throws too

19:57

where the Eagles just couldn't get any pressure on the quarterback

20:00

and he was able to sit there. I can

20:02

think of the nineteen

20:04

yard or on third and ten to start the fourth quarter,

20:07

you know where it seemed like Wilson was sitting

20:09

in the pocket for four or five second. That's the one

20:11

where more just physically eight up Mannix at

20:13

the top of his route stem and he was wide open

20:16

third and ten, I believe, and you know you have to get

20:18

off the field on third and ten, particularly in a game

20:20

like this. Yep, they and so you

20:22

mentioned that the lack of pressure consistently, they

20:25

tried to tune up the blitz a little bit. We saw

20:27

that on the final drive. The Eagles

20:29

go cover zero on third down, the

20:31

Seattle comes back with a fake screen to the outside.

20:34

They had burned them on a screen pass the wide receiver

20:36

screen back in week twelve against

20:39

the cover zero blitz to DK Metcalf. Metcalf

20:41

catches that one and goes, you know, fifteen yards

20:43

for a first down, and then they pumped the screen

20:45

on this case and then to throw it down field of Metcalf,

20:48

who comes up with a big, big play and obviously

20:50

steals the victory. Victory. Metcalf extremely

20:53

physically gifted. You and I both watched him when

20:55

he was coming out of All miss There was no doubt about

20:58

his talent. I think really the big thing was

21:00

number one, he was raw and everyone knew that. But number

21:02

two, the injuries as well. We're a big deal

21:04

and every team was going to react to that differently during the draft

21:06

process. Yeah, but he's

21:09

he's a very interesting player. And you know,

21:11

you talk about that last play the covers year. I

21:14

thought that the Eagles showed it just a hair

21:16

too early, and I think that that Wilson

21:18

saw it and he knew what he had and

21:20

you know, I don't know whether he was going to throw the screen or not.

21:23

We don't know that. You know, they're not going to tell

21:25

you that. But I thought that

21:27

they showed it a hair too early, and once he saw

21:29

that it was going to be Epps on Metcalf, he

21:32

was throwing the ball to Metcalf. But but he

21:34

you know, Metcalf is at his best running vertical routes

21:36

across their slants. Get him the ball on the move using

21:39

his speed and his size. He

21:41

certainly wins a lot of one on one matchups on the outside

21:43

and he and they isolate him as the boundary X, but

21:45

he's he's a tough matchup,

21:48

yeah, no question, certainly one

21:50

of the more physically imposing wide

21:52

receivers still playing right now in

21:55

the playoffs. But Greg the one big

21:57

thing before we close out, you know, obviously, the injury

21:59

to Brandon Graham as well as he was in and out

22:01

of the lineup, certainly impacted. I mentioned that they would

22:03

bring in an extra tight end to be

22:05

able to help against those five across looks

22:07

by leaving a tight end one on one with a defensive

22:10

end. And whether you know that was Vinny Curry, whether

22:12

that was Josh Sweat coming off the edge, you

22:14

know, they were able to get those matchups done.

22:16

And again, those defensives are coming from depth. The ball

22:18

was typically coming out a little bit quick. But still,

22:21

you know, losing Brandon Graham at certain

22:23

key points this game certainly hurt the Eagles defense,

22:25

oh, without question, because you know Cox. We

22:28

know that Cox can be absolutely dominant, and

22:30

he certainly had many dominant snaps in

22:32

this game. But I think Graham overall

22:34

has probably been snap after a snap the most

22:36

consistently good d lineman this year.

22:39

And he was a big, big loss because he

22:41

moves around as well. You know, he's he's obviously

22:44

Cox can be a matchup player inside, but

22:46

Graham can be a matchup player both on the edge

22:48

andy and inside. And they they

22:51

lost that, Yeah, no question, Well, Greg,

22:53

we're gonna catch up next week, and we're gonna talk all

22:55

about this Eagles team, go position by position,

22:58

kind of look at it overarching big things, big

23:00

picture thinking going into the offseason

23:02

and into the twenty twenty season and beyond.

23:04

So we'll go pig picture talking about

23:06

this roster for next week's show. But until

24:05

five star review as well, saying that this show

24:08

is a must listen for Eagles fans and how we

24:10

do a great job of simplifying complex

24:12

football concepts so that the average fan

24:14

can understand them. And Patrick, I can't tell you how nice

24:17

of you that is to say that is literally our goal each

24:19

whenever we speak to you guys here on the show or

24:23

any the other content we do, we want to take what

24:25

we see on film and simplified make

24:27

it more easily digestible for the

24:29

average fans. So Patrick really appreciate
