Benjamin Franklin was a well respected citizen, scientist, statesman, and activist for ending slavery in the new United States of America.  Ulysses S. Grant was our 18th President. Prior to that, he was the victorious general who defeated the Confederates to end the Civil War. Their COURAGE to face down the forces of oppression that brought slavery and segregation and their work to advance civil rights for Americans is why they are considered Hosses.
