Sacagawea provided a vital service (especially her calm service leadership) for Lewis & Clark, during their Corps of Discovery expedition to explore the Louisiana Purchase land from St. Louis all the way to the Pacific Ocean.  Needing to trade for horses with the Shoshone Tribe, Lewis & Clark were glad that they contracted with Sacagawea's husband Charbonneau to perform as guide and interpreter. Without any complaint, Sacagawea quietly gathered food for the 30+ member team of soldiers who came along with Lewis and Clark - the whole time caring for her infant son, Bapiste who was strapped to her back swaddled on a cradleboard.  During dangerous events like times the canoes and piroques were capsized on the Missouri river, Sacagawea remained unshaken. Her calm demeanor helped restore a mishap into something which could be handled. If this teenage woman could stay calm during disasters, all along caring for her infant without complaint, how much more so could the rest of the Corps of Discovery?  When the expedition reached her native tribe, the Shoshone, she was pleasantly surprised to find out that her very own brother was its new chief.  Not surprisingly, she helped negotiate to get horses for the treacherous phase of travel over the Rocky Mountains. On many occasions during the encounters with various tribes along the journey, Sacagawea was able to convince the would-be enemies to allow the team of explorers to pass unharmed and often with full bellies provided by tribes like the Nez Perce.  Overall, Lewis & Clark plus their whole team, completed their highly successful mission to explore the Northwest Territory of the Louisiana Purchase in 1804-1806, staying safe and alive in large part due to Sacagawea.  Sacagawea conducted herself admirably and enabled America to open up the West for settlement, and she is considered a HOSS indeed!
