0:45
be here. Good to be with you. I
0:47
am at Stetson. I am the dean of the Talbot
0:49
School of Theology at Biola
0:51
University, and occasionally a motivational
0:54
speaker who lives in a van down by the river.
0:56
I am actually, and the reason I say that
0:58
is I'm on the move today. So I'm actually
1:00
in Monterey,
1:02
California. I'll be preaching this weekend at Shoreline
1:04
Church, and the pastor is a good
1:06
friend of mine, an author that saw his books
1:08
have sold like a million plus copies. So very
1:10
excited to have him on here as well. But but
1:13
I'll introduce you to a second. But like, what's Monterey
1:15
famous for this? The naval thing.
1:18
The Monterey is one of the most cosmopolitan
1:20
small towns in the world. We've got one of the
1:22
top aquariums in the world. We've got some of the top
1:24
golf courses in the world, including Pebble Beach.
1:26
Pebble beach is here.
1:27
We've got an art center in Carmel. We have one
1:29
of the largest raceways in the world, Laguna Seca Raceway.
1:31
It's a right near us is
1:33
Salinas, which is an agricultural center.
1:36
This is where Ted talks were born. It
1:38
is a unique, unique place
1:40
in the world because it's a small town, but
1:42
the world comes here because of its
1:44
beauty and because of the uniqueness of this place.
1:46
And that voice you hear is Kevin Harney.
1:48
Kevin is the lead pastor of Shoreline
1:51
Church. He's also an author, international speaker
1:53
who seeks to help believers grow to love
1:55
God with greater passion. Reach out to the world
1:57
with a life changing message of Jesus
1:59
Christ. You've written many books, including
2:02
the Organic Outreach series.
2:04
We were just talking a minute ago. I've had you teach some
2:07
at my former school. You taught some
2:09
of our pastors from the book know is a
2:11
beautiful word. Lots of books
2:13
and curriculum. Kevin Harney, we're
2:15
so glad to. Well, we're actually
2:17
in your office. One of the amazing things our team,
2:19
you know, Bob Morrow's are brilliant engineer.
2:22
They hook up from here like, I've got this traveling
2:24
unit right here and they hook up. And so we got our team
2:26
in Chicago, Karen Hendren, our producer. So thankful
2:28
the good work that they do. I think Laura is manning the phones
2:30
today. Good team we have. But
2:33
but we get to come and sit here in
2:35
Monterey. And if you're in Monterey
2:37
or is this the Central Coast? Is that where we are?
2:39
Yeah. Central California.
2:40
Central California coast. Come join us
2:42
tomorrow at at at
2:45
I don't even know what service 9:00.
2:46
At 11:00 in.
2:47
The morning. I should know that I'm preaching at them, but I'll, I'll
2:49
just show up when you tell me to show up. Okay, good.
2:51
So we want to talk some about evangelism
2:54
and discipleship in particular today.
2:56
And because that's obviously a passion
2:58
of yours. Now, for those of you who are unfamiliar
3:00
with organic outreach, which I think is probably
3:03
your best known book, um, we
3:06
we, we when I was the interim teaching pastor
3:08
at Moody Church in Chicago, we
3:10
were having a conversation as a staff and
3:13
we said, you know, we want to up our evangelism.
3:15
You know, you can't be at Moody Church, named
3:17
after D.L. Moody, and not be an
3:19
evangelistic church. But the reality is evangelism
3:22
wanes. It's the one thing that
3:24
sort of, I don't know, people get busy with
3:26
their lives or their church lives. And
3:28
so we actually brought you
3:30
in. You came and preached at
3:33
at Moody Church and helped our staff think through,
3:35
and we started using organic outreach.
3:37
So first of all, I mean organic sounds.
3:39
That sounds very California. It sounds like something
3:41
you get it, you know, Whole Foods or something.
3:43
So let's talk about what it is
3:46
and then we're going to discipleship later. But let's start with
3:48
organic outreach. By the way. We're going to take your
3:50
calls too. And we have five copies of
3:52
Kevin's new book, Organic Disciples
3:54
Seven Ways to Grow Spiritually
3:57
and Naturally Share Jesus.
3:59
It's actually by Kevin and Jerry Arnie together,
4:01
and we're going to give some of those away as well.
4:03
Our number is going to be (877) 548-3675.
4:07
But let's just start with this word organic because
4:10
that means different things to different people, particularly in California.
4:13
So I'm going to define organic. Very simply.
4:15
Organic is the way God designed things.
4:18
Natural the according
4:21
to God's ways. And and so
4:23
how do we do outreach? How do we do evangelism
4:25
in a way that's consistent with how God has made us
4:27
and designed us and made other people?
4:29
And so I live in that near
4:31
the Salinas Valley and, and lots of agricultural
4:34
people in this area. And if you ask them about
4:36
organic farming, they'll tell you it's way harder
4:38
because they're not using these different chemicals
4:40
to kill the bugs. They have to do everything naturally.
4:43
And so what I describe organic
4:45
outreach as being as how do you share
4:47
your faith in a way that doesn't
4:49
freak you out, doesn't freak other people out, doesn't
4:51
terrify anybody. But naturally,
4:53
winsome draws people toward Jesus
4:56
who loves them and who cares about them.
4:58
Okay. And so so then you write organic
5:00
outreach. And I remember when you were
5:02
preaching at the Moody Church, you
5:04
explained about turning the temperature
5:06
up a little bit. So tell us about that. That's been a key theme.
5:09
Yeah, it's called the one degree rule. And
5:11
I called it that because I'm not a complex
5:13
thinker. I just thought, okay, how do you turn
5:16
the temperature up one degree on your personal outreach.
5:18
And so we ask people and there's people doing
5:20
this from Uganda to
5:23
Australia all over the world that we've trained and equipped,
5:25
and they've used our resources, individual
5:27
believers asking the question from 1 to
5:29
10, what's my personal outreach temperature?
5:32
I'm not talking about how much you love Jesus. I'm not talking about how much
5:34
you love the Bible. I'm talking about what's your
5:36
temperature of love for the lost,
5:38
wandering sheep that Jesus cares
5:40
about? A one would be, I don't care
5:43
about the loss. I don't think about the loss. And I wish they'd
5:45
stay away from me. That's cold. Ten
5:47
would be sizzling hot. Man, I there's
5:49
tears on my pillow when I wake up in the morning because I weep over
5:51
the loss. I think about the lost. I'm engaged with people that
5:53
are far from Jesus. I'm naturally
5:55
sharing my faith, and they're coming to know Jesus.
5:57
And most of us live somewhere between those
6:00
two. But I ask people to say,
6:02
where am I today? And I'd ask your listeners right now
6:04
from 1 to 10, give yourself
6:06
a number. Where is your personal
6:08
outreach, passion and engagement?
6:10
And if you say, I'm a three, here's the
6:12
one degree rule today. Make
6:14
yourself a four. Pray more for the lost.
6:17
All somebody you know that doesn't know Jesus and connect
6:20
with them. Read the Gospels and look at the
6:22
heart of Jesus. Listen to stories
6:24
or read books about people coming to faith in Jesus
6:26
or sharing their faith. And you can steward
6:28
your own temperature and raise it one degree.
6:31
So if you're three, become a four. If you're eight,
6:33
become a nine. And here's the good news if you're at ten, make
6:35
your scale 11. Turn up the temperature and
6:37
grow your passion.
6:38
Turn it up to 11. It's 11 baby. That's
6:40
that's it. Okay, so, um, and
6:42
I think that's key. And I want to actually ask our listeners
6:45
for a second to really think about that. So think
6:47
about his scale. Right. So
6:49
so I really I love evangelism.
6:51
I one of the things that I am
6:53
kind of on a maybe crusade about
6:55
is that people have convinced themselves that
6:57
there's a gift of evangelism. I don't I
6:59
don't see it anywhere in the Bible. Uh, there's evangelists
7:02
who equip God's people for what
7:04
the call of every Christian is to share the gospel.
7:07
So so I think everybody can
7:09
turn up that temperature. So maybe your attitude, maybe
7:11
you're and you're just nervous to invite
7:13
someone to church for Christmas and Easter. That's that's
7:15
okay. So what would it be like to turn
7:17
that up just a little bit more. And so think about
7:19
a number of where you are. And then
7:22
I want you to give us a little bit of Kevin, some ideas
7:24
about some ways to turn that number
7:26
up, because let's say someone saying right now I'm a four,
7:28
so what would I do differently
7:31
in my life? And I'll just start
7:33
with one. One of the things I try to do is I try
7:35
to push against, and this is going
7:37
to sound silly, but I try to push against the
7:39
depersonalization of everything.
7:42
So, for example, I, like
7:44
you have ATMs. You know, you go to the bank,
7:46
I say, I want to go meet the I want to go
7:48
in and meet the person, because that gives me a chance to talk
7:50
to them. I'll talk to the clerk at the store.
7:53
I'll talk to my Uber driver. Whereas,
7:55
you know, the Uber app actually gives you an option now
7:58
to press a button that you don't want anybody talking to you. It's
8:00
like no conversation. And I and
8:02
I'm not like obnoxious about it. Well, so
8:04
my kids might say that I am, but I
8:06
push against the personalization because I want to know
8:08
people who don't know Jesus. I want to know
8:10
my neighbors. You know, you were talking earlier about
8:12
how you had gone over and you bring Christmas
8:14
gifts to your neighbors. And and
8:16
I left. We moved to California. And people
8:19
don't like, you know, nobody greeted us when
8:21
we arrive. Like when we moved to the Midwest
8:23
in Chicago. Our neighbors brought us the casseroles,
8:26
um, and Nashville, you know, it was the same thing when
8:28
we came to California. We've every
8:30
conversation we've had with the neighbor we initiated.
8:33
So I'm going to I'm going to use because some of them are like
8:35
4 or 5 houses away. And like
8:37
they never talked to us at all. So I'm going to use it, I'm going to
8:39
Christmas, I'm going to bring them Christmas gifts. And
8:41
I love that. So that's so that's one way I
8:43
push back to turn up the evangelistic temperature in my life
8:45
is to push against depersonalization.
8:48
What are some others. And then I'm going to
8:50
have you answer, but I'm going to ask other people.
8:52
They might have examples as well. So you can call
8:54
us maybe with your examples or your
8:56
practice or your questions at (877) 548-3675.
9:01
That's (877) 548-3675.
9:05
So callers you can call tell us how maybe you turn that
9:07
temperature up a little bit in your own life. What practices
9:09
you have Kevin. What are some ways you've seen that
9:11
work?
9:12
First, I'm super excited to hear your listeners and
9:14
some of their ideas because that's there's power in that.
9:16
We're always learning from each other. But let me give you
9:18
three things. They all start with the letter P and you can
9:20
remember these. Number one is what you leaned into
9:23
right away at proximity. Get near people.
9:25
Just get near people, but especially near people that are
9:27
far from Jesus. And so reconnect with
9:29
old friends. Reach out to family members. Get
9:32
to know your neighbors so you want to raise your temperature.
9:34
Get around people far from Jesus and
9:36
your heart will beat for them. Partly
9:38
we're just separate from people. So proximity.
9:41
Second prayer. Pray
9:43
for those that are far from Jesus. Pray for yourself
9:45
to grow in love. For those that are far from Jesus.
9:47
Pray for courage and boldness and that will
9:50
raise your temperature. And then here's the third
9:52
thing passages. Find some
9:54
passages in the Bible that talk about
9:56
the heart of Jesus for the world, the love
9:58
of God for the lost. You know, look.
10:01
Look at Abraham's story where he basically is
10:03
blessed. Why? To become a blessing to the nations.
10:05
And so find those passages where Jesus
10:08
says, go therefore, and make
10:10
disciples of all nations, and just meditate
10:12
on those passages. So
10:14
proximity, prayers, passages
10:17
that will help turn up the temperature.
10:18
Good, good, good. All right. So we're going
10:21
to continue our conversation in just a moment. We're also going to go to the
10:23
callers as well. Remember we're talking about
10:25
maybe some ways that you've turned up the evangelistic
10:27
temperature in your life. Maybe some ways you seek
10:29
to engage your neighbors, your friends and your
10:31
family. (877) 548-3675.
10:36
Just this morning, I was responding to
10:38
someone who's not a Christian and was
10:40
asking me what C.S. Lewis books because he
10:42
knows I, like, See Us Lewis. I was recommending some
10:44
to him. That's a practice I want to have my life. Maybe
10:46
yours as well. Eight we're looking for your examples.
10:49
(877) 548-3675.
10:53
We're here with Kevin Harney talking about organic
10:55
outreach and organic disciples. Hey!
11:08
We're back. It's tetra. It's debts are live. We have
11:10
our guest today, Kevin Harney. We're live from
11:12
Monterey, California.
11:14
And Kevin's lead pastor of Shoreline Church.
11:16
But really probably known around the world for organic outreach.
11:19
Now, his new book is Organic Disciples,
11:22
uh, which kind of continues that theme
11:24
in and around, uh, where
11:26
organically we're seeing that kind of life change
11:28
and more. We're going to talk about that in just a moment. The book
11:30
is called Organic Disciples Seven
11:32
Ways to Grow Spiritually and Naturally Share
11:34
Jesus by Kevin and Sherry Harney. And
11:37
we we have some of those to give away. Kevin. We're going
11:39
to do that in just a second. But the way we do it
11:41
is we give it away to brilliant, insightful callers,
11:44
not to just people calling up saying, can I have a copy
11:46
of my caller number seven? No. Um, but
11:48
but you'll be blessed by it as well. I'm
11:50
just so appreciative. I think I endorsed that book. Um,
11:52
if I didn't, I should have. I don't
11:54
even know if you asked for endorsements. All right, we got some calls
11:56
coming in already. Let me remind you, we're just kind of
11:58
asking maybe some ways that you
12:01
naturally seek to share your faith to turn
12:03
up that temperature. A degree
12:05
or so. We're going to go to Catherine in
12:07
Costa mesa listening on K wave
12:09
there. Catherine. So you're live on the air. Go
12:12
with your question or your comment.
12:14
Well, hello, gentlemen. I want to let
12:16
you know that I do a prayer
12:18
walk every morning. You know, you're getting your steps
12:21
in, you're getting your exercise. And
12:23
I just pray for every single neighbor
12:26
I pass. I say, Lord, this is a
12:28
family and soften the hearts
12:30
and and make divine appointments
12:32
for me. So.
12:35
And in Mark there's a sober
12:38
living home and my block and
12:40
oh, you would leave. I pray
12:42
for them. I tell them that Jesus
12:44
is a higher power. And let me
12:46
tell you something. It's amazing the power
12:49
of prayer.
12:51
Come on, come on Catherine, I love it. Thank you so much
12:53
for your call. If you'll hold on. Uh,
12:55
Karen, our producer, is going to come on and
12:57
give you a copy of Organic Disciples
12:59
Seven Ways to Grow Spiritually and Naturally Share
13:02
Jesus. But you got to say her,
13:04
it kind of reminds me of your wife's book. Yeah. So
13:06
so I'm going to just open the door because we
13:08
like her. Where where is she today, by the way?
13:10
She is with grandkids in Michigan.
13:12
But I need to say I was born at Hoag Memorial Hospital
13:15
in Costa mesa. So that's my old stomping
13:17
grounds. Grew up in Orange County there, and
13:19
I love that. What a great
13:22
way to live your life and to spend your time
13:24
walking and praying. And God answers those
13:26
prayers. God makes those divine appointments
13:28
and I have no question they got us using
13:30
you and could use any listener right
13:32
now who begins to prayer walk. And you can prayer
13:35
drive, uh, that that my wife
13:37
writes about that in her book, uh, Praying with Wise
13:39
Eyes Wide Open, which is coming out in June,
13:42
uh, being rereleased as Organic Prayer.
13:44
And so and she now.
13:46
Talks about now on an earlier version
13:48
called praying with Eyes Wide Open. Correct.
13:51
Which, which at first, when you guys are telling
13:53
you about that, you know, I was thinking like, you know, Russian
13:55
Christians pray with their eyes wide open,
13:57
but it's not really that. It's basically having an awareness
14:00
of what's going on around you.
14:02
Yeah. What my wife says is if you don't pray
14:04
with your eyes open, you're going to limit your
14:06
time of prayer because your eyes are open
14:08
a lot of the day. And so learn to pray with your eyes open
14:10
and closes about praying all the time, everywhere,
14:13
and including when you're walking along, uh,
14:15
walking your dog walk in your neighborhood and
14:17
praying for those that need to know
14:19
the love and the grace of Jesus.
14:20
Yes, very much. Pray without ceasing kind of idea. Exactly, I
14:22
love that, I love that, and you're and Sherry's awesome as well.
14:24
All right, let's go to Lisa in Palm Beach
14:26
Gardens, Florida, listening on warm
14:28
Lisa, you're live on the air with your comment. Go right ahead.
14:33
Um, yeah, I, I just
14:35
stepped into the conversation when I heard you
14:37
say about things becoming
14:39
depersonalized, um,
14:41
and I noticed, like, so when I go to the
14:44
store and there's an opportunity
14:46
for, um, checkout
14:48
automated or with a person,
14:50
I'll try and get one with a person.
14:53
Um, because sometimes there's even, albeit
14:56
brief opportunities to,
14:59
um, encourage somebody or even,
15:01
you know, bless them somehow like that.
15:03
Um, yeah.
15:05
Like, um, one example,
15:08
a lady yesterday was, um, saying
15:10
at the register how she didn't feel well.
15:12
And so I had some easy
15:14
food that I had bought, and I said, well, take
15:16
something if you want it. You know, because she had, she
15:18
had, you know, had a stomach ache
15:21
and was hungry, I guess. So there's just
15:23
little ways, I think in
15:26
and I yeah, I need more
15:28
organic ideas, I guess, because
15:30
sometimes it seems contrived.
15:32
You love people and you care so much
15:34
and it's like, how do you even get in the conversation?
15:37
So love it. Love
15:40
it. Lisa, first of all, let me just agree with you a whole heartedly
15:42
that self-checkout is of the devil. That's
15:44
not what you said, but it's something for
15:46
so many reasons. But one of the reasons
15:48
is the depersonalization. So. So
15:51
I love that you're doing that. And here's what
15:53
I would also just suggest a little more.
15:55
Here's what. And again because you're looking for more
15:57
ideas, what what I do is
15:59
and you can't always do this, but you know, like we have a little
16:02
grocery store near us, you know, California, it's Ralphs,
16:04
which I think is Kroger. It gets like one
16:06
of the sub brands of Kroger. Um, so,
16:09
like, you could go to your Ralph's,
16:11
avoid the self-checkout line, go through
16:13
the checkout line. And what I try to
16:15
do is I try to go to like, I
16:18
look like even when I'm in a restaurant, we go to
16:20
the same little restaurant near our neighborhood and we
16:22
look for the same servers, learn their
16:24
names, come back, uh, same thing
16:26
if I go to a grocery store. Now, if you have one of those
16:28
huge grocery stores, our grocery stores
16:30
are not huge. It's harder. But you're
16:32
looking for some of those ways to have
16:34
those ongoing relationships. Lisa, I want you to hold
16:36
on the line. We're going to give you a copy
16:39
of Kevin and Sherry, his new book, Organic
16:41
Disciples Seven Ways to Grow Spiritually
16:43
and Naturally Share Jesus. What other ways
16:45
would you suggest for her to find ways
16:47
to, to, to repurchase, analyze and to
16:49
engage people?
16:51
Well, one way is if you have
16:53
a garage door opener and you
16:55
roll into your garage and push the button behind you,
16:58
stop doing that and and
17:00
and just get to know your neighbors. One
17:02
way also is we all
17:04
have a circle of relationships that have
17:07
kind of just cooled off and maybe
17:09
disappeared. We got busy. We haven't reached out. And
17:11
just to think through, I would ask all your
17:13
listeners who are 2 or 3 people you haven't seen for
17:15
a long time. They don't know Jesus,
17:17
and if you reached out to them, they'd be they'd be glad
17:19
to hear from you and just make that reconnection.
17:22
The the becoming Depersonalized
17:24
is also about being busy and being
17:27
distracted. And if we can just, um,
17:29
take that time and I'll give one more thought to.
17:32
And that is, uh, be aware
17:34
of your technology. If you've got a,
17:36
you know, watch that brings in data. Excuse
17:39
me if you've got a, uh, if you've got
17:41
a phone, whichever one does. Um,
17:43
sometimes we're with people, but we're actually not with
17:45
them. And actually turning things off or
17:47
setting them aside. I was walking through the airport yesterday,
17:49
and I was counting the percentage of people who
17:51
had a device in their hands and were locked
17:53
into it in some way. I got to about 80%.
17:56
It was kind of scary. And so
17:58
when you're with someone, actually be with
18:00
them because you can be in the presence
18:02
of someone and not be connected to them, and that's another way
18:04
to connect and become more personal.
18:06
Fasting and so and so important to that. This
18:08
is a a pattern that we
18:10
can find in our lives. One of the things I like
18:12
to do, um, and I think I think
18:15
we did when we brought you in, we did a two week
18:17
missions conference. I think I did one of them you did the next week,
18:19
and I talked about creating a map
18:21
and a list and keep it in your Bible,
18:23
like a map of your neighbors who don't know the Lord
18:26
and try to build relationships, and then a list of people
18:28
you're praying for as well, because you never know what the Lord's
18:30
going to do as well. Super, super helpful
18:32
comment, Lisa. Victoria, we're going to go to you in just
18:34
a second, but let me just give our phone number again.
18:36
Our phone number is (877) 548-3675.
18:41
We're talking to Kevin Harney. Uh, we're actually
18:43
live for Monterey, California. We're talking about
18:45
organic outreach, but also his new book,
18:47
Organic Disciples Seven Ways to Grow
18:49
Spiritually and Naturally Share
18:52
Jesus. And I love the tie of those two things together.
18:54
And you and Sherry wrote that book together
18:56
as well. So let's go to Victoria
18:59
in Rialto, California. Victoria, you're live
19:01
on the air with your question, your comment. Go right ahead.
19:04
Good morning, gentlemen. Thank you for being
19:06
there. I enjoy the program. Every
19:08
Saturday. Um,
19:11
I had an interesting event occur.
19:13
My brother flew in from Missouri. We
19:15
picked him up at Long Beach. We
19:18
stayed at the Holiday
19:20
Inn and we had breakfast. We're
19:22
all sitting around and there's
19:24
a big burly gentleman
19:27
that looked like a motorcycle rider. He
19:29
had a t shirt on. It says, I hate people
19:32
and it just jarred
19:34
me inside. I was like, my
19:36
goodness, he hates people.
19:39
And he's not embarrassed or
19:41
ashamed to wear that t shirt. And
19:43
I wish I had my I love Jesus
19:45
t shirt on, but I didn't. So
19:48
we ate and we finished up. We went
19:50
back upstairs with my brothers
19:53
and family and we all packed and we were leaving.
19:55
Well, that big burly gentleman was
19:57
outside smoking a cigarette and
20:00
I'm a 67 year old great grandma.
20:02
So I walked up to him and my
20:04
grandson, who's 22, grabbed me
20:06
by the arm. Grandma, what are you going to do?
20:09
I said, I just want to talk to him a minute.
20:11
I felt the Holy Spirit tug at my heart
20:13
and I walked up to him and I
20:16
kind of laid my hand on his shoulder
20:18
and I said, young man, can I ask
20:20
you something? And he said, sure. I said,
20:22
do you hate people? And
20:25
he said, well, no,
20:27
I don't hate everybody. And
20:29
I said, well, do you hate me? And
20:31
he says, no, I don't hate you.
20:34
And I said, well, I don't hate you either. And
20:36
I wish I had my I Love Jesus
20:38
t shirt on to let you know
20:40
that Jesus loves you, I said,
20:43
and I love you and the love of the Lord.
20:45
And he said, oh, how nice.
20:47
And I said, well, I just wanted
20:49
to let you know that there is somebody that loves
20:52
you and all people don't deserve
20:54
to be hated. But I saw
20:56
that you were wearing it, so I wanted to comment
20:58
on it, and I and he says, wow,
21:01
that's amazing. And he said,
21:04
would you pray for me? And I said,
21:06
I said, come on, I would love to pray for
21:08
you.
21:09
And so standing.
21:10
Next to him is a is a
21:12
guy that looked like he was homeless, but
21:15
he had been talking to him and he
21:17
says, do you know what I
21:19
need to tell you about a miracle?
21:21
I said, a miracle. And he said, yes,
21:23
this young man is my nephew.
21:26
He said, I was adopted
21:28
and his mom
21:31
is my sister. And
21:33
he said he found me
21:35
in a recovery home. Oh,
21:38
the Holy Spirit just lit
21:40
us all three up and it was
21:43
amazing. I was hugging my
21:45
brother and sister in law were in the
21:47
car, my husband, my
21:49
grandson. They were driving
21:51
around the. They came up and opened
21:53
the door because we had to be at Long Beach Airport
21:55
to take my brother to the he
21:58
said, grab this is you with anybody
22:01
want you. And I said, yeah.
22:02
This is Grandma power. Like like,
22:05
yeah, if you're a grandma, you can
22:07
go up to the biker with the with
22:09
the shirt that says, I hate people.
22:11
I mean, that's grandma skills there. Well,
22:13
can I just say, Victoria, what a great call.
22:16
And what a great what a great story we
22:18
got to actually, if you hold that a line too, we're going to give you a
22:20
copy of the new book, Organic
22:22
Disciples Seven Ways to Grow Spiritually
22:24
and Naturally Share Jesus. And
22:26
I love that. Now that was like she turned up
22:28
the temperature way high.
22:30
And, you know, that's organic.
22:33
You know, you don't get that in a book. You don't
22:35
get you don't get that in a class.
22:37
You're sitting there, you notice the Holy Spirit
22:39
prompts you. And that's the key, is that
22:41
people, we as Christians need to learn that
22:43
God's giving those opportunities every
22:45
day. Just pay attention, just
22:47
notice and step into what God's doing naturally.
22:50
Not pushy, not demanding, just
22:52
gracious and kind of boy. You can hear grace
22:54
in that voice, couldn't you?
22:56
Oh, I thought.
22:56
That was so awesome. I want Victoria is my new
22:58
hero. That's the best call in a while.
23:00
I just love that she goes up. I mean, again,
23:03
because, you know, it's it's it's disarming
23:05
to have a grandma come up to you.
23:07
And again, it might be different depending upon,
23:10
you know, who you are, you know. And
23:12
but but looking for, you know, back to
23:14
the, you know, praying with eyes wide open to use your wife's
23:17
books title as well. Looking
23:19
for those opportunities really does
23:21
make a difference. Let me remind everybody that our phone
23:23
number invite you to call him. We're having some fun stories.
23:26
We're talking to Kevin Harney. Uh, we're
23:28
talking about some about his book Organic Outreach. We're going to
23:30
start talking more about his book, Organic Disciples in
23:32
just a moment. But we really enjoyed
23:34
some of the conversations that people have been giving. I
23:36
told you, I have a great audience, great, great listeners,
23:39
our phone number. Maybe you got an example of
23:41
some way that you have turned up the temperature
23:43
a bit in your evangelism and sharing
23:46
your faith and more. Uh, our phone number
23:48
is (877) 548-3675.
23:53
Again, that's (877) 548-3675.
23:56
I've got a note from my producer Karen, saying that was
23:59
a great call. And it was. That's my favorite
24:01
grandma right now. Victoria, we're. Thankful
24:03
for you as well. Okay.
24:05
So when when you see this
24:08
happen, um, uh,
24:10
sometimes it happens at work, which leads to one of our questions
24:12
here. And so we're going to go to George George's up in
24:14
River Grove, Illinois, Georgia, live on the air
24:17
with your question. Go right ahead.
24:20
Hi. Thank you. Um, yeah. So
24:22
I manage people. I have,
24:24
uh, I work in a hospital environment. I manage
24:26
a lot of people, and, um, and,
24:29
you know, by their actions, by their speech,
24:32
I can tell that most of these folks are not, are
24:34
not churchgoers. And and
24:36
I find it kind of hard to to
24:39
connect with them, or at least to, to be able
24:41
to, you know, uh, invite
24:43
them to church. How do I, I mean, or at least
24:45
speak the word to them. How do I how
24:48
do I go about that?
24:49
Yeah. And I think I think you also
24:51
in our call screener mentioned that
24:53
sometimes it's what people who work for you because
24:56
you're a manager and that sometimes becomes
24:58
a little bit tricky too. And I totally get that as well.
25:00
So I want you to hold on and listen in
25:02
just a moment. We're going to we're going to weigh in on
25:05
this question. But let me say
25:07
he wants to know about how to start building some of those bridges.
25:09
But let me mention that from a legal
25:11
perspective, the sharing your faith
25:13
outside of work time. So on your break
25:16
and your lunchroom, those things of that
25:18
sort in a way that
25:20
has no bearing on how you treat
25:22
your employees who work for you,
25:24
has been pretty much like like
25:26
everyone agreed. I think there was even a pamphlet put
25:28
out jointly by some Christian
25:30
ministry, and some I think it might have
25:33
been the ACLU or something that's, you know, pretty
25:35
progressive. And they basically were
25:37
saying that people at work can have conversations
25:40
about faith on their off time
25:42
and, you know, when they're not forced
25:44
and where there's no ramifications if someone doesn't
25:47
respond. We're going to continue our conversation with
25:49
Kevin Harney in just a moment, and we're going to answer your call,
25:51
more specifically, George on the other side. Stay
25:53
with us. Our number (877) 548-3675.
26:06
Hey, we're back at Stats are Live event center.
26:09
Continue our conversation with Kevin Harney. I
26:11
want you to stay on the line because after
26:13
Kevin answers the rest of your question, Karen
26:15
Henderson, our amazing producer, is going to come on the line
26:17
and give you a copy of Organic
26:19
Disciples Seven Ways to Grow Spiritually and Naturally
26:22
Share Jesus. So all right, so he's looking for
26:24
I kind of address some of the legal questions. So
26:26
he's looking for ways to build bridges with people at work.
26:28
What do you think.
26:29
So I'm going to say something that might be shocking
26:31
to hear a pastor of a local church say, because I'm a local
26:33
church pastor. And and that is George.
26:36
You said, you know, you want to maybe find a way to invite him to church.
26:38
And I'd say, don't invite him to church. Not right away.
26:40
I'd say invite him over for burgers, brats,
26:43
coleslaw, some potato salad or whatever
26:45
you like to cook. And
26:47
and if you're getting to know someone and you
26:49
get along with him, invite him into your home and invite him into
26:51
your life. Uh, hang out with them. They'll
26:54
learn more about your faith by being in your
26:56
home, in your backyard, meeting your
26:58
family. And in that context,
27:00
exactly like Ed just said, um,
27:03
you have every right in the world to
27:05
let the light of Jesus shine, to share who you are
27:07
and share your life. And your life is immersed
27:09
in the love and the grace of Jesus. And
27:11
so I'd say start with with
27:14
a broader relational connection. And most
27:16
people are much more open to come over for
27:18
a barbecue or to hang out with you than they are
27:20
to go to church with you start there. And
27:22
then from there you can build a relationship, and then
27:24
you can discern when a sermon series
27:27
is coming up or a topic at your church that might really
27:29
connect in their life, because you've got to know their life.
27:31
You know, we spend so much time with that 9 to 5
27:33
window we saw, you know, he he works at a hospital.
27:35
So I'm guessing he's not always 9 to 5. But that's
27:38
a lot of places where our relationships
27:40
take place. So super super call George.
27:42
Great question as well. We're going to
27:44
I want to hit some more calls because we've got some more calls
27:46
coming in. Matter of fact, I'm going to stop giving the number. We got so
27:49
many calls coming in. Uh, but here's what I want
27:51
to ask. I need callers to because we got we're about
27:53
the second half of the show, so we want to
27:55
get right to it. So with your question or
27:57
your comment or your example, I love that.
27:59
And and then we'll kind of press through. So we're
28:01
going to go first to Mia in Orlando,
28:04
Florida. Uh Mia, you are live
28:06
on the air with your comment. Jump right in.
28:09
Hey. Hi. Yeah. I just wanted to.
28:11
Let you know what my experience has been.
28:14
Um, I am a member of a fitness
28:16
club, and I do laps in the pool,
28:18
and I wear my AirPods. And
28:21
usually, I would say almost always
28:23
when I'm done doing laps, another
28:26
swimmer or another woman
28:28
will ask me, hey, what are you listening to?
28:30
And I'm always listening to a
28:32
moody podcast. And it's,
28:35
it's usually a some sort of Bible study.
28:37
And I it's, it's so
28:39
natural and so relaxed and I get to share
28:41
exactly whatever it is
28:44
the topic is. So I might it might be about the
28:46
thief on the cross or about Passover, or
28:48
about how Jesus treated
28:50
women, or what the Bible has to say about women
28:52
and the role. And, um,
28:54
it always leads to a great conversation.
28:57
You know, either the person might be a believer,
29:00
but they might not be, and they're really
29:02
curious. Oh, really? What what
29:04
are they saying on this podcast? What do you what
29:06
are you learning? And and it leads
29:08
to a great conversation.
29:11
Yeah. And I think, I think I love, first of all, Mia. Awesome.
29:13
And uh, and we, I love
29:16
Orlando, by the way, Lake Howell High school graduate here.
29:18
So, um, so but one of the,
29:20
one of the things is, is there's like a,
29:22
um, Mia has a
29:24
tool in a sense, that's prompting questions.
29:27
And, uh, you know, I think I have
29:29
a pastor friend who, um, I thank
29:31
you for your call. Me, I have a oh, I don't want
29:33
to give you a copy. I think we still have one more copy left, but
29:36
hold on a second. I'll tell you about in a minute. But I have a pastor
29:38
friend who got a tattoo
29:40
on, uh, in Greek
29:42
on his arm. I forget what it was. Now, uh,
29:44
to tell a story. Which is? It is finished.
29:47
And and, of course, you know, I mean, I
29:49
learned this from people that people who get tattoos,
29:52
whether they're kind of creative, they kind of, like,
29:54
are very happy when you ask them. And so
29:56
everyone asks him, well, what's that mean?
29:58
And what a great entree.
30:00
And in her case, I mean, Mia, first
30:02
of all, I didn't know you could like, listen to podcasts
30:05
while you were swimming. This is new news to me. She must
30:07
have some sort of, uh, you know, thing
30:09
that does that, but but my guess
30:11
is, like I would say to her, what are you listening
30:13
to when you're swimming? I mean, it just it's
30:15
like prompts like that. Are there
30:17
other things, Kevin, that you've seen that are prompts like that?
30:20
Yeah. Let's say thank you to me also,
30:22
and I love that, she said. It's just so natural.
30:24
That's what we mean by organic.
30:27
Yeah. It doesn't have to be scary for others or
30:29
for us. Just be a human being. Just
30:31
connect with people. Just be who you are and
30:33
you can have those conversations. I'll give one for
30:36
everybody out there that I will tell
30:38
you that probably in the next 2 to 3 weeks,
30:40
someone's going to ask you a question that will
30:42
open the door for a spiritual conversation. Let me tell
30:44
you what that question is. It's powerful.
30:47
And you're going to go, how did I walk past
30:49
this my whole life? Someone's to look at you and say,
30:51
hey, what'd you do this weekend? What
30:53
did you do this weekend? People ask that all
30:55
the time. And what
30:57
you need to do is when you're in church
30:59
on Sunday, listen for one
31:02
lesson. That would be something you could
31:04
share with a non-believer and just tuck that away in your heart.
31:06
And when someone says, what'd you do this weekend,
31:08
you can. One of the things you could say is, you know, I went
31:11
shopping. I went and watched my grandkids soccer game.
31:13
I went and did a hike. Oh, and I
31:15
had an amazing time at
31:17
my church. An amazing time. As a matter of fact, I learned
31:20
some things that were life changing. Pause.
31:23
And most of you are going to say like what?
31:26
And share that thought. I learned this about how
31:28
my personal finances and how generosity makes
31:30
the difference. I learned this about my relational
31:32
world. We're in a series right now at our church
31:34
on five ways to Make Every
31:36
Relationship Better. And
31:39
this week, uh, pastor
31:41
Doctor Ed Stetson is talking about bringing Jesus
31:44
some way, bringing your spiritual life into your relationship.
31:46
So we're talking about next week. I'm going to talk about making
31:48
time, but you can tuck away a simple lesson
31:51
from your Sunday sermon or your Sunday Sunday
31:53
school class. Something you learn, something you experience. When someone
31:55
says what you do this weekend,
31:57
make sure you let them know that you are gathered
31:59
together with a group of people and you learn
32:01
some life changing things and
32:03
see if they don't ask you like what? And
32:06
when you share, they'll realize that our faith
32:08
really does change our lives.
32:10
So good, so good. And I love I love
32:12
me as an example and I love so many other examples.
32:14
And it's just a reminder, Kevin, that that evangelism
32:17
is not dead. I mean, people are
32:19
and the cultures become more hostile. We get that.
32:21
And I think it's also worth noting that earlier,
32:23
as a pastor, you said, you know, don't necessarily invite them
32:25
first to church because the perception
32:28
of church has grown more negative in people's
32:30
mind. Not not, you know, we're still pro inviting people
32:32
to church, Easter, Christmas, great times if
32:34
you're doing a series of outreach, great times. But
32:36
but I think to the gospels,
32:39
kind of normal delivery system
32:41
is through relationships and the fact
32:43
that Mia has somebody saying, hey,
32:45
what you listening to? Probably
32:48
because somehow she's swimming and listening
32:50
at the same time, which I'm, I'm barely breathing
32:52
when I'm swimming, so what do I know? But super, super
32:54
Mia, thank you so much for your call and really,
32:56
really helpful as well. And I think, George,
32:59
we gave you a book earlier. Good. So we're making sure folks
33:01
have that. All right. Let's let's go to
33:03
let's go to Lindsey in
33:05
Blooming Grove, Texas.
33:07
I don't think I've ever heard of Blooming Grove, Texas.
33:09
Lindsey, you're live on the air with your question or your comment.
33:13
Hi.
33:13
Yes, and I have a comment of
33:15
my example of discipleship.
33:18
Um, I'm fairly new
33:20
and to study in the Bible probably a few years,
33:23
and at first I thought I
33:25
had to go on a mission
33:27
somewhere, right? To to disciple
33:29
the people. And then I finally realized I can do
33:31
it wherever I am. Um,
33:34
I work south of Dallas, so
33:36
I'm I'm kind of all over the place throughout
33:38
the week. So as I study the Bible,
33:40
I like to write down the verses
33:43
that reach out to me the most and
33:45
I keep them with me wherever I go. And
33:47
I just pass them out, um,
33:49
or I'll leave them in the bathroom or on a table
33:51
at a restaurant. Um, just
33:53
wherever I go, and I, I look for
33:56
signs for God to reach
33:58
out, you know, to other people.
34:01
Um, recently, my
34:03
church kind of empowered
34:06
me. And we we
34:08
are downtown and we have these
34:10
events. We had a bluebonnet festival
34:12
and I purchased 500
34:14
snacks and put Bible verses on every
34:16
single one of them, and I
34:19
single handedly passed them out to
34:21
everybody in the crowd. I didn't I
34:23
didn't speak about it. I just walked up
34:25
to people in need. I had waters, so
34:27
would you like a snack? And
34:29
some people were so grateful. And
34:32
then there were others that were like, why are they? Because
34:34
I would say these are free or free of charge.
34:37
And they would look at me and say, why?
34:39
And I would point to my church and
34:41
I would say, I'm here passing out snacks, inviting
34:43
people to church. Wow.
34:46
And I did that all day.
34:48
And we have another festival coming
34:50
up. Um, that's recently
34:52
that's been my ministry. Um, the
34:54
Lord told me at the beginning of this year he gave
34:56
me the name of the sower. I am a
34:58
sower of his word, and
35:01
he can speak better than I can. So
35:03
I just leave his messages everywhere I go.
35:06
Oh, that's so super. Lindsay, good for you. And what I
35:08
love the intentionality that's
35:11
there. Now, I would say I mean, we're
35:13
100% sure that we we want more than that.
35:15
I would say that level of intentionality
35:17
I often hear from like churches, like
35:19
like I think we're here. Isn't there like a
35:22
marathon here this weekend? Yeah.
35:24
So Big Sur.
35:25
Marathon, Big Sur marathon. So I'm sure some church
35:27
is going to be out there handing out water bottles. And I love
35:29
that. But I love the fact that, like, Lindsay's
35:31
not doing it with her church, she's doing it on her
35:33
own. And even I
35:35
love that as well. Lindsay, I'm out of books, but I
35:37
would give you a copy if
35:39
I had them of Organic Disciple seven
35:41
Ways to Grow Spiritually and Actually Share Jesus,
35:43
but I. But I love that. But I love how Lindsay has
35:45
just intentionally sought opportunities
35:49
to do those. Well,
35:51
I mean, like, I don't know why because I don't know
35:53
that that's organic. That's
35:55
like there's a boldness there that
35:57
I really think is really great. Where for
35:59
all of that, we're for we're for people
36:01
sharing information with their neighbors. We're for
36:03
people handing out gospel tracks. I'm
36:05
for people doing creative things at
36:08
fairs, you know, sharing the gospel
36:10
with their family. Love all of that. Okay, we've
36:12
got one more segment left. Our phone number
36:14
is (877) 548-3675.
36:17
We're going to talk when we get back about organic disciples
36:20
and how to grow, grow spiritually and naturally.
36:22
Share Jesus. Hey,
36:34
we're back at stats for live. We're in our final segment
36:36
today. We've got Kevin Hardy as our guest.
36:39
His new book with Sheri Harney is called
36:41
Organic Disciples Seven Ways to Grow Spiritually
36:43
and Naturally Share Jesus.
36:45
Let's take one more call, and then
36:48
I want to ask you a few questions about the book
36:50
that, that that the new book. What
36:52
when did it come out? How new is it?
36:54
It came out about a year ago. Okay.
36:55
Super, super. Okay. So I think this call
36:57
is actually from someone who's from your
36:59
old stomping grounds, Hudsonville, Michigan.
37:02
You know, where Hudsonville, Michigan is?
37:03
I served for 20 years in West Michigan.
37:05
They're in that area, so I know it very, very well.
37:07
All right.
37:08
Well, let's go to Kathy in Hudsonville, Michigan. You're
37:10
live on the air. Kathy.
37:12
Hi. Thank you. Um, I
37:14
want to say that I give all glory to God.
37:17
And my
37:19
husband's a pastor also, who has served
37:21
here for over 25 years.
37:23
And we lost our son seven years ago
37:25
with a heart attack. He was only 32.
37:29
And that was tragic. I mean, it
37:31
was heartbreaking. And I have to say,
37:33
after three days, the Holy Spirit gave me
37:35
a piece that I just
37:37
cannot explain to people. It's
37:39
just something that he gave me a piece.
37:41
He's he's given me words to say.
37:44
And the people he has brought into my
37:46
life that have lost children.
37:50
I'm amazed. I'm just
37:52
amazed. And I never am afraid to talk
37:54
about the glory of God
37:56
and the peace of God, the
37:58
Holy Spirit. I
38:01
just am thankful that God
38:03
has given me that, uh, the words.
38:05
Because I couldn't have done this. No way, no
38:07
way could I have done this without that.
38:10
Um.
38:11
Well, let me say, Cathy, we we grieve
38:13
with you. I know that's that's hard. Heartbreaking.
38:15
But I also so thankful that you,
38:18
uh, you know, that pain is just
38:20
a connection point. And the Lord
38:22
bringing grace and peace in the midst
38:24
of that. Um, I can't tell you how many
38:27
times in the midst of a difficult situation
38:30
or from a difficult situation. I've heard somebody
38:32
share the gospel from their pain to somebody
38:34
in pain and the difference it made.
38:37
And, you know, we have a ministry at our church
38:39
called Grief Share. We didn't invent it. It's out there. It's in
38:41
lots of churches. But the couple
38:43
that started that ministry in our church had lost
38:46
their college son in a senior
38:48
year of college in a tragic accident.
38:50
And this couple, Terry and Betsy,
38:53
uh, after a number of years of walking
38:55
through grief and experiencing
38:58
God's touch and healing and presence, felt like they
39:00
were ready to help others. And so we've had,
39:02
over the last decade, many,
39:04
many, many extended sessions
39:06
of grief share. And it's amazing how
39:09
many non-believers, because we
39:11
advertise it in the community, how many non-believers
39:13
have come to be to find comfort and care
39:16
and discovered that ultimately, the best place to find
39:18
that comfort and care is the God who made them, and the God who
39:20
watches over them. And so,
39:22
just so thankful for your
39:24
testimony of God's grace and presence
39:27
through that deep loss. And again, we we
39:29
grieve with you over that loss, but that
39:31
God can take those things and redeem
39:34
them. And so for churches, if you don't
39:36
have a a grief share a ministry
39:38
for people going through grief and bringing Jesus in the midst
39:40
of that, that may be a natural way, an
39:42
organic, natural way to connect people who
39:44
are looking for comfort and care to Jesus,
39:47
to the local church, and to people who will love them and walk
39:49
with them. Yeah.
39:49
You know, I once told, um, I think it
39:51
was Kay Warren of Rick and Kay Warren
39:54
that I thought that the greatest
39:56
ministry they have would not be
39:58
the books that they wrote. Or
40:01
and again, it was kind of it was in a we're friends.
40:03
It was context of that. It's not something I would blurt
40:05
out to a stranger, but probably
40:07
the greatest impact of that is when they shared their pain.
40:09
I remember I think it was Larry King
40:11
back in the day. I was flying from
40:13
Nashville to Dallas, and
40:16
I think he was on Larry King, and
40:18
they were on Larry King, just sharing about the pain
40:20
of their son, who had died by suicide.
40:22
And and there
40:24
were crowds of people in
40:27
when I left Dallas, I was flying back to Nashville.
40:29
There were crowds of people around the television watching
40:31
them talk about it. And when I landed in Nashville, there
40:33
were crowds of people still there. And so,
40:36
um, because I think there's something about and
40:38
so I'm so thankful that that, first
40:40
of all, that God gave you grace and peace in the midst of that
40:42
you mentioned three days after. But I know the
40:44
grief comes in waves, but also how you
40:46
continue to, uh, to
40:48
honor the Lord and honor his memory
40:50
as well. So, Cathy, thank you so much for your
40:52
call as well. All right. Talk to me a little bit,
40:54
Kevin, about because you had organic outreach.
40:56
And then last year you publish and Sherri
40:58
wrote this book, Organic Disciples, which
41:01
sort of ties in when we hear discipleship,
41:03
we think of, like, kind of post-Christian
41:05
growth. Yeah. But the full title is Organic
41:07
Disciples Seven Ways to Grow Spiritually
41:10
Like That and still naturally share
41:12
Jesus. I love how that's there. But talk to us some about
41:14
those ways to grow spiritually that you talk about in the book.
41:17
Well, it was interesting when, uh,
41:19
Sharon, I had written three books about outreach,
41:22
organic, extraordinary people, kind
41:24
of our personal outreach, organic for churches
41:26
as a congregation, how we reach out, and then organic outreach for
41:28
families. How do you turn the place you
41:30
live into a lighthouse? And so we thought. We're done with
41:32
writing about that topic. And then a
41:34
national group in New Zealand actually
41:36
said, Will you come and spend a week speaking to us
41:39
about how discipleship,
41:41
our spiritual growth, connect with outreach
41:43
evangelism? And we said,
41:46
well, that's not really our thing. We you know, I'm
41:48
an evangelist. I have the calling of an evangelist.
41:50
That's kind of our thing. And this
41:52
group kept pushing on us. So we finally we spent
41:54
about six months studying and preparing. And as we were doing
41:56
that, we really felt like God was opening our
41:58
eyes to the important connection
42:01
between how we grow
42:03
in Jesus and how we go with Jesus.
42:05
And if we're growing in Jesus, we should be going
42:07
with Jesus. So what we've learned is that all
42:09
of the practices of our spiritual lives, all of the
42:11
things that we do to grow personally, make
42:14
us more like Jesus. That's the idea.
42:16
And we become more like Jesus. Guess what? Our heart
42:18
is like Jesus and His heart was always for the lost,
42:20
for the for forgotten and the broken. So.
42:23
So we discovered that passionate
42:25
prayer. If you're a person of prayer, you'll
42:27
grow to pray for those that are lost and even pray with
42:30
non-believers. I can tell you if I give you one takeaway
42:32
today, that could be an amazing
42:34
life changer and game changer for your listeners
42:36
in terms of their outreach. Personal outreach
42:39
in a natural way is that if
42:41
you're a person of prayer and you're growing in prayer
42:43
when you when
42:45
you are talking with somebody, a non-believer,
42:47
and they share about a deep moment of pain,
42:50
if you say to them, you know, listen, I,
42:52
I really believe that there's power in prayer. I don't
42:54
want to put any pressure on you, but I would be so honored
42:57
if I could take a moment right now and just pray
42:59
for you in what you're going through in this
43:01
loss you've gone through and you lost your job, you lost a child,
43:03
you lost a relationship. And
43:05
I can tell you at thousands of
43:07
times I've done that with non-believers, atheists,
43:09
thousands of times. I've had four times. I can count them
43:11
on one hand that someone has said no. Almost
43:14
everyone says you would do that for me,
43:16
or I'd love that. Or they tear up and there. And
43:18
so if I could say to your listeners, when someone
43:20
shares a deep pain, if you would
43:22
very kindly say, I'd
43:24
be honored if I could take just a moment and pray for you.
43:27
And you can actually, you don't even have to close your eyes. We
43:29
can just talk right here to God. And and
43:31
most people will say yes. And God shows up in those moments.
43:33
And if someone shares an incredible
43:35
joy, I just got to raise up my job. I just got a new
43:37
job. I just I just became a grandpa
43:40
or a grandma at that moment say,
43:42
you know, would you mind? I would, could I just take
43:44
a moment and thank God for that and pray and
43:47
won't use any weird language, won't say anything strange. I just
43:49
want to thank God for that. And if someone says no, thank
43:51
you, no problem. But normally they say yes.
43:53
And that opens the door for the presence of Jesus.
43:55
Each part of our spiritual lives in the word and prayer
43:58
and worship. All of those can and should
44:00
lead us out to the world with the gospel
44:02
of Jesus. So.
44:03
So when you in the in the book, do
44:05
you kind of walk through like, you know, I don't
44:07
just list all seven practices because we really wouldn't have time,
44:09
but what are some of the ways to grow spiritually
44:12
that you include in that.
44:13
So, so wholehearted worship
44:15
growing in your worship can lead and worshipers go
44:17
out into the world. Passionate prayer, biblical
44:20
engagement, humble service. Jesus
44:22
served. So we serve joyful
44:24
generosity in a selfish world with Christians
44:26
who are generous. That speaks to the world.
44:29
Organic outreach, consistent community.
44:31
Being in the family of God. The more we're connected to the
44:33
family, we can invite people into that family. All
44:35
of these. There's there's seven primary practices
44:38
that were modeled by Jesus, taught by Jesus.
44:40
They will lead you to the world with the gospel.
44:42
And so who would the audience for this book
44:44
be? Is this new Christians? It's going to be something that small groups
44:46
can do. Uh, Christian has been
44:49
Christian for a while.
44:49
Tell us there's a small group curriculum that comes with it.
44:52
There's videos that are free on
44:54
on the organic outreach website. That's organic outreach.
44:56
Org and or and or
44:58
you can go to Organic Disciples org and you can find
45:00
the videos for free. Our publisher told
45:02
us that we created more free resources for that
45:05
book than any they've ever seen in the
45:07
history of Christianity. They said all.
45:08
Live since 2000 years.
45:10
Giving it away. That's they don't they they keep the
45:12
records, not me. Well, and it's also publisher.
45:14
So you know, you gotta you never to believe that but almost but.
45:16
Almost everything almost every you know we put these things
45:18
out there for free and there's sermon
45:20
materials for pastors, free small
45:22
group materials for free. And so just, uh, we
45:25
want to help Christians grow so they can
45:27
go.
45:27
Love it, love it. And of course, the title of the book
45:29
is Organic Disciples Seven
45:31
Ways to Grow Spiritually and Naturally
45:34
Share Jesus by Kevin and Jerry Harney.
45:36
And you guys. I mean, people don't realize this. How many
45:38
like they you're a pastor here,
45:40
but like, you're not like the super
45:42
famous pastor. No, but your
45:45
books have sold millions of copies around the
45:47
world. And again, that's why I was a joy to
45:49
bring you to Moody Church. I recommend Organic Outreach
45:51
all the time, and now I'm adding organic disciples
45:53
to that as well. So let me thank Kevin Harney, our guests,
45:56
for joining us today. Thanks to our behind
45:58
the scenes team at Moody Radio, Karen Hendren and
46:00
and Bob Morrow. I've already mentioned Laura's on the phones
46:02
today and what great callers. Thank you for our callers
46:05
today and a super, super helpful
46:07
conversations as well to hear today's program.
46:09
Again, you'll find it at Ed Setser Live.com
46:12
or at the Moody Radio app. Remember I said
46:14
at the beginning, you can download this program
46:16
and all of our programs as podcasts and listen
46:18
to them anytime. I think we've got some good conversations,
46:21
good guests. So make sure you go to Live
46:24
Comm, subscribe, buy podcasts as well.
46:26
You can connect with us through social media all at
46:28
Ed Setzer Live. And of course,
46:30
ET Cetera. Live is part of the family. Of
46:32
programs that are all part of movie radio,
46:34
and then goes out with our partners and affiliates
46:36
and all around the world. But
46:38
Moody Radio produces this, and
46:40
Moody Radio is a ministry of Moody
46:42
Bible Institute. So here from Monterey, California, Ed
46:44
Setzer, the dean of Talbot School of Theology of
46:46
Biola University, says, thanks for listening.
46:49
Looking forward to be back with you next Saturday.
