RATING
It's very cute with a lot of heart and a surprising amount of political intrigue.
Hidden little gem! Story is engaging, characters have good development.
Young adult fantasy in which a teenager's powers are discovered and she's forced to attend a magic boarding school that unfairly provides more opportunities/status for the naturally powerful - and she's the most powerful out of everyone there. She wants to keep her head down and return to a quiet life with her father, but she's too powerful to ignore (and she also agrees to a magic duel early on and demonstrates her power trying to win it, which seems counterintuitive?). Along the way, she gains friends, allies, and a rival. Political intrigue regarding magic users in this world come to light as the story and world develops, exploring some ideas of following vs resisting authoritative structures.
The exposition for the world building is impressively effortless. Such a self assured debut.
Harry potter but with more logic and less homophobia.
