RATING
I want like, 50 more podcasts like this! The story is unique and interesting (while also being an excellent allegory of sorts for the harms caused by criminalization, during prohibition and now). The chemistry between the two main characters is believable, fun, and tantilizing from the jump. I've seen that some folks don't like the more narrator-forward style way the story is told, but I really enjoyed it, it didn't take away from the listening experience at all for me. In fact, I think this style of storytelling was a benefit, and allowed the physical attraction between characters to be more realistic, palpable, without going in the over-the-top-smut direction or the awkward-smooch-noises route. Or maybe I'm just a sucker for a sapphic slow burn... Either way, this was a great listen with a beautifully built world, and my heart aches that I can't actually visit Judging Your Cover.
I'd rate this 3.5/5. Told like an audiobook with multiple narrators (POV 3rd person limited), the prose creates atmosphere at some points, especially in the description of certain settings, but veers towards clunky and cliche at others in a way I didn't always find charming ("Elsie was tempting, yes. She was also a mistake."). Overall dynamic between the two leads and the conflict between them is interesting. The prohibition era fantasy setting is a good aesthetic and is enhanced by the music.
Atmospheric and lushly devious, with quick-witted dialogue that feels right at home in the time and place. And flapper girls in love! This thing has everything, people!
The story is really immersive! You really get a good feel of what the world was like at that time, you feel everything with the characters, and there is a. LOT, plus, the idea of elixirs in this world is explored in really fun ways. It's engaging, it's got action and drama and romance, and it's all you could ask for!
Felt more like an audiobook than a podcast. Nicely queer, enjoyed it, voice acting was good, would listen to a sequel :)
