Two friends from very different backgrounds talk about their faith in Islam. They are looking at questions written by a group of high school students, most of whom are white and non-Muslim, and aged between 12 and 13 years old. In their answers, the friends talk about how culture and context have a huge impact on outsiders' perceptions of their religion.
1. Is being a Muslim the most important part of your identity?
2. I would like to ask a Muslim “Do you agree with everything the Qur’an says?” I am asking this because if you did believe in everything it says I think life would be very difficult.
3. I would like to ask a Muslim "Do you play Minecraft or any other video games or do you not have time?" I am asking because I play them but have lots of spare time and I don't pray all day. Maybe Allah doesn't like Xbox?
4. I would like to ask a Muslim “What do you enjoy most about being a Muslim.” I am asking this because it seems like the religion is very strict.
5. I would like to ask a Muslim “Do women feel comfortable wearing hijabs?” I’m asking this because I think women should feel confident in the way they look and not need to hide.
6. I would like to ask a Muslim “Do you think certain groups give your religion a bad name?” I am asking this because I believe your religion is very well known for bad reasons and you must be annoyed by this.
7. I would like to ask a Muslim “Do you support minority groups such as gay or trans people?” I am asking because I believe it is important to make changes to accept everyone.
8. I would like to ask a Muslim “Do you feel pressured to follow all these rules that are laid out for you? Do you do everything that is asked of you?” I am asking this because the rules seem quite strict and my life isn't strict.
