back to Eevee News Daily. Coming

1:02

up today, a global Eevee sales surge is predicted

1:04

for 2024. The electric Range

1:07

Rover is pictured and the Ford E-Transit gets

1:09

upgraded. Plus, stay tuned because later in the

1:11

show, I'll tell you what the big milestone

1:13

Tesla is celebrating in China. Well, good morning,

1:15

good afternoon or good evening. Wherever you are

1:17

in the world, Eevee News Daily is your

1:19

trusted source of Eevee information. I'm Martin Lee

1:21

and I go through every Eevee story so

1:23

you don't have to. Now

1:25

we'll get into the news

1:28

about this International Energy Agency

1:30

report about global Eevee sales, where

1:32

they're selling well, where they are predicted

1:34

to sell well in 2020 form. The

1:37

International Energy Agency's report came

1:39

out today. Honestly, it's

1:41

very comprehensive with a lot

1:44

of data points inside looking historically, but

1:46

also looking forward as well across, like

1:48

I say, the global Eevee market. The

1:51

IEA predicts a record 17 million

1:54

Eevee sales this year. That is

1:56

electric sales and plug-in hybrid sales. 17 million.

2:00

cars with plug sockets on the side of them will be sold

2:02

in 2024. That is a

2:04

20 percent increase on 2023. So

2:06

when you see these headlines around about

2:08

EV sales and they might be alongside

2:10

words like declining and things like that,

2:13

the growth rate is not as fast as

2:15

it has been in the past because of

2:17

supply and demand issues, because of interest rates

2:19

going up globally, car financing, things like that.

2:22

But also it's nuanced. It's certain parts of

2:24

the world. And many of those articles are

2:26

written from the US perspective where there is

2:28

a slowdown in the growth, but not a

2:31

slowdown in EV adoption because globally it's a

2:33

20 percent increase. Now, how

2:35

do we do last year? Well, BEVs,

2:37

battery electric vehicles, were 18 percent of

2:39

all cars sold last year in 2023,

2:41

up from 14 percent in 2022. It's

2:46

a 35 percent year on year increase. So

2:48

that's the growth. Thirty five percent previous two

2:50

years, 20 percent this year

2:52

on last year. So that's where the headlines

2:54

come from. But it's not a slowdown in

2:57

EV sales. It's a slowdown in what was

2:59

a very big growth rate. You get that.

3:01

Electric vehicles will reach price parity with petrol

3:03

cars in all segments, at all price points in

3:05

2020, 2030 in just six years time, according

3:09

to this report. But, hey, look, you and

3:11

I know that according to models, according to

3:13

finance deals, monthly deals, stuff like that, you

3:15

can even get cheaper EVs, like for like

3:17

than the combustion stuff in

3:20

certain cases right now. That's happening now.

3:23

Despite some market slowdowns, the IEA anticipates

3:25

a new phase of growth in the

3:27

global EV market now that the market

3:29

has stabilized supply and demand has worked

3:31

itself out. IEA suggests

3:33

half of global car sales will be full electric

3:35

in 2035 if

3:37

the world continues under its current policy. So,

3:39

again, people are losing their mind about, you

3:41

know, I love my diesel and I don't

3:43

want to don't nobody take my diesel truck

3:46

away. You'll come and have to

3:48

wrestle it off me. Firstly, no one's taking

3:50

your combustion vehicles away. And also even by

3:52

2035, half of global car

3:54

sales will be pure electric under

3:56

current policies. That is not pure

3:58

electric globally. parts of the

4:01

world which will lag, some parts

4:03

will be ahead. But if the

4:05

world and its policymakers meet

4:07

the energy and climate commitments that are being

4:10

talked about, it could well be two-thirds. So

4:13

66% will be full electric. Now we know

4:15

that Norway leads in the electric vehicle adoption

4:17

with 80% of new cars sold in 2023

4:19

being fully electric. It's 90 plus percent with

4:22

plug-in hybrids in there as well. The

4:24

UK emerged as Europe's largest EV market

4:27

last year. I mentioned that recently on

4:29

the podcast. Well last year there was

4:31

a surge in global sales, as I

4:33

mentioned, 14 million units last year, part

4:35

of that 35% growth. But this year

4:37

20% growth is

4:40

still very big. The rest of

4:42

the car industry would kill for that.

4:45

China will see EV sales of 10

4:47

million this year. That's going to be

4:49

45% of all new car sales in

4:52

the country will be with a

4:54

plug socket on. Or as they say, NEV, new

4:56

energy vehicle. It's electric, it's

4:58

plug-ins and it's hydrogen but there's

5:00

none of those for sale. In the

5:02

United States, one in nine

5:04

cars will be electric

5:07

this year. So it's just tipping over

5:09

10%. In Europe it'll be

5:11

one in four car sold. So 25%

5:13

of our market will be EVs despite

5:15

challenges such as the

5:17

current slow down because of

5:19

subsidy phase outs in some parts like Germany, which

5:22

is the biggest car market in, was the biggest

5:24

EV market in Europe. Now it's the UK. The

5:27

IEA remains optimistic about the growth of EVs suggesting

5:30

a new phase of EV expansion is

5:32

about to start. The executive director there,

5:34

Faith Beryl said, and I quote,

5:36

under today's policy settings, the rapid uptake of EVs

5:38

could eliminate the need for over 10 million

5:41

barrels of oil per day by

5:43

2035. Well she also emphasized the

5:45

importance of enhancing EV affordability and

5:47

ensuring sufficient public charging infrastructure to match

5:50

sales growth. Pop a link in the

5:52

show notes if you'd like to read more about that very extensive

5:54

study. Let's talk about vehicles now. And a new

5:56

vehicle, always like to talk about new cars and this is from the

5:59

Smart brand which we are all

6:01

gonna have to get our head around is no longer

6:04

small little city cars quirky

6:06

like the smart 42 and the smart

6:08

44 it's being reinvented

6:10

and it's much bigger segment cars

6:12

now the smart I think

6:15

I meant to say hashtag five not

6:18

smart number five but or even smart

6:20

five smart hashtag five I'm wincing as

6:22

I say that good terrible the smart

6:24

hashtag five it's been unveiled

6:27

at the Beijing Auto Show this

6:29

week signaling a shift towards a

6:31

more mainstream and larger market segment

6:33

featuring off-road equipment this concept

6:35

they showed off had a winch and

6:37

roof mounted light bar alongside some futuristic

6:39

design elements like unique headlights and no

6:41

exterior door handles it'll be

6:44

their most spacious vehicle yet the

6:46

hashtag five concept offers

6:48

room for four passengers with all of

6:50

that each having their own individual seat

6:52

with a large center console OLED

6:55

screens integrated into the dashboard no technical

6:57

specifics because like I say this was

7:00

a look at what's to come from the brand

7:02

but they said it'll have a hundred kilowatt hour

7:05

battery pack 800 volt

7:07

architecture range of 340 miles

7:09

or so smart plans to introduce the production

7:12

version of the hashtag five we'll get to

7:14

see what it looks like in reality in

7:16

the second half of this year made in

7:18

China probably not for sale in the US

7:21

but I would imagine China and Europe let's

7:24

talk a very important vehicle to go electric

7:26

because it's one of those last vehicles which

7:28

they've been saying for a long time oh

7:30

it's really hard to go electric for big

7:32

vehicles well Tesla did it with the Model

7:34

X here do it with the EV 9 but Range

7:37

Rover Jaguar Land Rover Range Rover saying for a

7:39

long time no we can't really make the Range

7:41

Rover electric because it's really hard to do it

7:44

yeah I mean it's hard but it's very

7:46

possible and they are Range

7:48

Rover's first electric SUV's been unveiled not

7:50

an official unveiling but more

7:53

like the first images have been published

7:55

of the fully electric off-roader showcasing Jaguar

7:57

Land Rover's interpretation of the iconic vehicle

8:00

the Range Rover. Strong demand is anticipated

8:02

for the all-electric Range Rover. Many people

8:04

want to buy these as business vehicles,

8:06

where here we have a huge business

8:08

incentive to drive zero emissions vehicles. Lots

8:11

of personal retail buyers also just want

8:13

a zero emission Range Rover.

8:16

The brand continues to experience growth.

8:18

Range Rover Sport particularly and the

8:20

Range Rover models are growing. The

8:22

upcoming electric version has over

8:24

16,000 people on the

8:26

wait list for more information, so serious

8:29

people who are looking for more information on it. They range

8:31

Rover, so they feel that

8:33

it's a robust interest in the

8:35

vehicle. That follows record quarterly wholesale

8:37

numbers. Now the electric off-roader will

8:40

is currently undergoing rigorous testing and

8:42

extreme weather conditions in Sweden, down

8:44

to minus 40 degrees in the Arctic Circle. Done

8:47

their hot weather testing already in the

8:49

Middle East, that's 50 degrees Celsius. And

8:51

Range Rover's new electric propulsion system with

8:53

the new electric drive units, in-house assembly

8:55

of the battery and EDUs will

8:57

enhance performance they say on all the various surfaces

9:00

that a Range Rover simply has to perform. Like

9:02

we talked about the G Wagon

9:04

on the podcast as well. That is another

9:07

vehicle that simply has to perform off-road. Many

9:09

of them won't ever even get

9:11

a little bit muddy because they'll be doing the school run,

9:14

but they have to have off-road chops. The

9:16

electric Range Rover will obviously also have to

9:18

offer luxury, refinement,

9:21

silence like an off-roading

9:23

Rolls Royce, promising smooth and

9:26

relaxed journeys, but also having unparalleled

9:28

capability. The vehicle's traction control setup

9:30

will distribute the wheel slip management

9:32

to each EDU on the front

9:34

and the rear axle, reducing torque

9:36

reaction time from 100 milliseconds to

9:38

as little as one millisecond by

9:40

moving to electric propulsion. So I've

9:43

said this so many times on

9:45

the podcast, moving to EV is

9:47

just better unless you really get

9:49

your kicks from the

9:51

noise of burning stuff. And some

9:53

people do and that's fine that's their thing. But

9:56

really if you just want the most capable

9:58

vehicle, and I'm talking The

10:00

fastest the most refined the quietest

10:02

the best off-road because you've got

10:04

my new detail over each control

10:07

over each motor Electric

10:10

is always the answer every single time

10:12

Range Rover claims the new off-roader will

10:14

navigate through 850 millimeters 85 centimeters

10:17

or 33.5 inches of Water

10:22

potentially surpassing the capability of even things

10:24

like the Hummer EV which can wade

10:26

pretty deep following the introduction of the

10:28

electric Range Rover They plan

10:30

to launch two smaller electric SUV models

10:32

possibly based on the Evoque and the

10:34

Velar with additional electric vehicles scheduled for

10:37

release in 2026 what

10:39

do you think about the electric Range Rover? What

10:41

do you think it's got to come with

10:43

in order to meet all the specs that

10:45

those buyers demand of that vehicle will the

10:47

buyers of? That vehicle make the transition to

10:49

electric what Range Rover says they're confident They

10:51

think they will find an audience just like

10:53

I think you know Rolls-Royce When

10:56

they eventually went electric with the specter, I

10:58

think they were perhaps surprised I

11:00

don't know that but from what I can read between

11:02

the lines at the level of interest and obviously there's

11:04

a Three or five year waiting

11:07

list for that electric vehicle now. They just

11:09

can't make enough of them They're buyers just

11:11

want clean green power never having to go

11:13

or having to get you know The help

11:15

to go and get petrol and they can

11:17

just cruise around the Riviera in their electric

11:20

Range Rover Electric Rolls-Royce rather

11:22

that they've charged at home. I think the Range

11:24

Rover will be the same I'd love to get

11:26

your thoughts right. We'll take a quick break

11:28

hit that skip forward button Am

11:31

I meant to say that probably not right skip forward

11:33

and I'll join you on the other side I've got

11:35

some brilliant electric vehicle needs to get to

11:37

oh Welcome back now.

11:39

We'll talk oh by the way. I should mention I

11:57

I'm really behind on saying. Thank you to new

11:59

pages but a couple of weeks behind on saying

12:02

thank you to our new producers, executive

12:04

producers, new partner joined up as well

12:06

from down under. And so I'll

12:08

get to those in the next couple of days. Thank

12:10

you for your patience. Right. Let's talk

12:12

about the 4D transit upgraded with a

12:14

bigger battery, more range, Ford's electric transit,

12:16

incredibly popular here, certainly in the UK.

12:18

We haven't got truck culture, but we

12:20

have white van man culture.

12:23

White vans really popular. If you're a tradey

12:25

to use Aussie language, then,

12:27

you know, we haven't got trucks or utes, but we

12:30

are all about white vans, probably

12:32

because the weather is it just rains all

12:34

year. So trucks, you know, you'd always have

12:36

to have a hardcover. I mean, there is

12:38

the odd truck around. Don't get me wrong.

12:40

But if you want a working vehicle, you're

12:42

going to get a van. And

12:44

now they've been made here in Europe

12:46

since 2022, the electric version of the

12:48

transit, the legendary transit. And it

12:51

now gets an upgrade after a couple of

12:53

years with a bigger battery and a WLTP

12:55

range of four hundred and two kilometers. Now,

12:58

89 kilowatt hour

13:00

battery with a 28 percent increase in

13:02

range compared to the previous model, along

13:04

with a heat pump for improved efficiency.

13:07

Charging capabilities also getting better as well.

13:10

22 kilowatt AC charging is capable. It

13:12

says that might mean that it's an

13:14

optional double check on that rather than

13:16

standard. But DC fast

13:19

charging of 180 kilowatts, 10 to 80 percent charge. Thank

13:23

you, Ford, for giving us 10 to 80. We always

13:25

want 10 to 80 in 28 minutes. And

13:28

that's very, very doable on a lunch

13:31

break, a half hour lunch break. And

13:34

if you're using that as a working vehicle and you're

13:36

going to DC fast charge it from 10 to 80

13:38

and then do an afternoon's work, that

13:40

is enormously capable.

13:42

It's very fast charging and well done, Ford,

13:45

for giving us such a good van. There's

13:47

going to be an extended range E-trans

13:50

in 19 different variants as well with

13:52

various different body styles and payloads. So

13:54

Payloads from 3,000 or 3,500 kilograms up

13:56

to 40. The

14:00

thousand two hundred and fifty kilograms

14:02

at whether you need flexibility commercial

14:04

customers need. Various

14:06

different body styles you can get a

14:08

in those the aims. A transit still

14:11

comes with two motors so if you

14:13

did just whatever you need is working

14:15

vehicle or it's it's head over heart

14:17

is nuts. It's well it's bottom line

14:20

over anything else. It's so it's the

14:22

cash. Hundred and thirty five kilowatt motor

14:24

or hundred ninety eight kilowatt modes up

14:26

And they say the by given a

14:29

bigger battery, more range extends the customer

14:31

base. With Ford Pro as that commercial

14:33

bit before emphasized the importance of high

14:35

productivity electric fleets around the well providing

14:38

a wide range of solutions. Now this

14:40

vague was made in Turkey at Fort

14:42

14:44

the I Won T and the

16:54

Our One S as well at

16:56

new customers amidst a a softening

16:58

demand like A mentioned early Sunday

17:01

in the Us to premium erase

17:03

eligible trading vehicles from the the

17:05

likes of food and how to

17:07

like I say from twenty eighteen

17:09

or newer this specific discounts for

17:11

outings and B M says well

17:13

customers interested in leasing or purchasing

17:15

riven vehicles. As to take delivery by

17:17

June thirtieth to get this. Big discounts.

17:19

And of course you have a free

17:22

charging as well the Ruby and charging

17:24

that was really an adventure network. The

17:26

Orient I should call it has four

17:28

hundred and thirty three false charges, seventy

17:30

one stations in various states, and there's

17:32

some level two charges way points blurts

17:34

of autumn sky hundred dollars I think

17:36

now floating around as well, right? Let's

17:38

talk three more stories, including that Big

17:41

Smiles time at Tesla China are celebrating.

17:43

Stick around for that story. Now

17:45

let's talk a little bit about

17:47

a test. Was U S marketing

17:50

team including the design studio in

17:52

Hawthorne, affected by recent layoffs part

17:54

of the moved to streamline operations

17:56

at Tesla? They were the cycled

17:58

growth content. t. And

18:00

lead just been formed only weeks ago.

18:03

Significant hiring was taking place. Senior Manager

18:05

Alex and Groom was leading about forty

18:07

people in that same and they will

18:09

all have been impacted by the job

18:11

cuts. Single must talking recently on his

18:14

social network X about how they're gonna

18:16

be trying out some advertising, creating some

18:18

video and social media content, and the

18:20

same task with doing that's have now

18:22

all been let go of the Ceo

18:25

Elon Musk expressing dissatisfaction by saying that

18:27

the nature of the work they were

18:29

producing was. And I quote generic.

18:33

States despite previous approval

18:35

of advertising by the

18:37

sea ice. Tesla.

18:39

On the when his largest lay off

18:42

by volume including these marketing folks but

18:44

generally the company so over ten percent

18:46

of the stuff leaving some departments more

18:48

like twenty percent around the world as

18:51

well. China affected Berlin affected you can't

18:53

do those kind of layoffs in Berlin

18:55

of as the it's Germany it's different

18:58

than labour laws over here in Europe

19:00

was the know those non contract did

19:02

part time workers or those on a

19:04

daily contracts a minor have those contracts

19:07

renewed and like it also didn't ask.

19:09

People for voluntary redundancy or earlier time and

19:11

things like that but not like the Us.

19:13

We can just tell people who has putting

19:16

up to work that base yet I work

19:18

here anymore. That doesn't Not the way happens

19:20

over here on. I'm pleased to say module

19:22

our wages are a bit lower than Us

19:25

wages say and I swings and roundabouts know

19:27

laps. Ah well. He on

19:29

Musk has been hinting at the need

19:31

for reorganization for some time and to

19:33

streamline Tesla he says he's gonna be

19:35

a wartime see I've Mccain as they

19:37

pivot the company away from selling vehicles

19:40

and move it towards being an Ai

19:42

robo Taxi company was on the a

19:44

buzzword in that sentence. The recent restructuring

19:46

has raised concern some some institutional investors

19:48

via about the impact on things like

19:50

marketing and design teams in the United

19:52

States was dying with Tesla and a

19:54

recent study by Consumer Reports reveal the

19:57

Tesla has a low maintenance and repair.

19:59

costs compared to other major auto

20:01

brands, attributing this to the fewer moving

20:03

parts in electric vehicles. The

20:05

2023 annual auto survey based on data

20:07

from thousands of car owners in the

20:10

US confirmed Tesla's position with the lowest

20:12

maintenance cost over the first 5 years

20:14

and first 10 years of ownership. Now

20:16

that might be a surprise to some

20:18

people who have either got very high

20:20

insurance quotes and that being attributed to

20:22

the high cost of replacing Tesla parts,

20:24

also the Tesla parts shortage which affects

20:26

some parts of the world more than

20:29

others and also the general

20:31

expense in repairing. How it's just

20:33

cheaper to write off a

20:35

Tesla and send it to the scrapyard than try and

20:37

replace it. And so that will

20:39

be a surprise to many people that this report

20:42

says that it has the lowest maintenance and repair

20:44

cost. Of course Tesla doesn't have an

20:46

annual maintenance program to take it back to the

20:49

dealer to have its I

20:51

don't know whatever's checked. My

20:53

EVs do, my MG goes back to

20:56

MG once a year, expensive

20:58

and they don't do anything. I mean they send me a

21:00

little video of being like here's your car, check

21:02

the washer fluid, thanks a lot for that. But

21:05

I guess it's important to keep that up for

21:07

the stamps in the book and all that kind

21:09

of stuff when I sell it on but still.

21:11

Well this data highlights Tesla's unique approach to not

21:13

mandating expensive maintenance programs that

21:15

are common with other brands and

21:19

that is largely down to why they

21:22

have come out lowest in this particular

21:24

report. Right finally, congratulations to

21:26

Tesla. Congratulations to

21:28

the Tesla China team and all

21:30

of Tesla's team who've done business

21:32

with China because Tesla is celebrating

21:34

a decade in China today. 1.7

21:38

million local owners initially

21:40

delivering the Model S back in the day in

21:42

2014. Tesla

21:45

now serves a vast amount of

21:47

customers in China and

21:49

elsewhere because China is

21:52

the export hub for that business.

21:55

China accounts for over 20 million new energy

21:57

vehicle owners. Shanghai

22:00

factory operating since 2019, marks

22:03

Tesla's first wholly owned foreign auto

22:05

manufacturing project Giga Shanghai, or whatever

22:08

we used to call it, but now Giga

22:10

Shanghai, achieved a milestone with its 1 millionth

22:13

vehicle made in August 2022. It's

22:15

2 millionth in September 2023

22:18

and Tesla models are very popular in China. Model Y is

22:20

the car that they

22:22

all want, but

22:26

it's not just about the Model Y. Model 3 is

22:28

of course made there as well, S

22:31

and X being imported. Recent price cuts

22:33

across the model range in China for

22:35

all of them, S3X and Y, are

22:37

all about trying to stay competitive in

22:39

the market. Well, Shanghai's factory currently boasts

22:41

an annual production capacity of 950,000 vehicles

22:44

a year, the largest globally, according to

22:50

their recent financial reports. That's your podcast
