1:01

the amazing 'Rico Brogna' podcast with

1:04

your host, Evan Roberts. Expectations.

1:14

What does it all mean? What

1:17

do we all think going into a season?

1:19

It's easy to forget what we think going into

1:21

a season because then it gets muddied

1:23

by what actually happens. Today,

1:26

on 'Rico we talk about the expectations

1:29

for twenty twenty three, but also

1:31

the expectations the meds have faced

1:33

over the last thirty plus

1:36

years. We know what the results were. We

1:38

know what ended up happening that year. But

1:40

what the hell were we thinking? Going

1:43

into each season. We'll focus on that today.

1:45

Our big rewatch will occur

1:48

Sunday night into Monday of the Super Bowl.

1:50

It is game seven of the nineteen eighty six

1:52

world series. We have supplied the

1:55

link of where you can watch that game.

1:57

It's on YouTube. I've tweeted it out

1:59

We've put it in the profile here when you download

2:01

Rico so you could watch that game

2:03

and we are gonna break that some bitch

2:05

down. In painstaking detail

2:09

on the very first ever 'Rico

2:13

Rewatching. And I must say, thank

2:15

you. Thank you to the audience

2:17

for voting upon a win.

2:19

Because the more I thought about

2:21

it, the more I realized Did

2:24

I really did you really wanna

2:26

sit down for two and a half hours of

2:28

our life? Three hours of our life.

2:30

Like, it's pathetic enough that we're

2:32

watching an old game. That's already mockable.

2:35

Trust me. I've already been mocked. But

2:37

to sit down and watch a painful loss,

2:40

like, what the hell's wrong with us? What

2:42

are we, Massocas? So

2:44

luckily, we picked a game that

2:46

ends with a championship. Games

2:49

seven of the nineteen eighty six world series

2:51

unfortunately, one of the most disrespected

2:54

games in Met History. Because what

2:56

we learn I mean, I'm thirty

2:58

nine. What we learn if we're under forty two,

3:00

about eighty six is we learn about

3:02

game six of the NLCS, and we

3:04

learn about game six of the world series.

3:07

Game seven has been forgotten about,

3:09

but not anymore. Not

3:11

after we're done with the very first

3:13

rewatch of 'Rico Alright.

3:16

Let's get to expectations. So

3:18

this season and it's easy to think

3:20

this as we enter spring training just

3:22

about a week or so away to know that

3:24

the expectations for this met team

3:27

They're incredibly high. And rightfully

3:29

so, they're coming off a year in which they

3:31

a hundred and one games. They're coming

3:33

off off and off season in which even

3:36

though maybe there are some who don't think the Nets improved

3:38

themselves enough, they have gone out

3:40

and spent a lot of money. They

3:42

go ahead Justin Virland and replace Jacob

3:44

the ground. Kodi Sanger to replace

3:46

Chris Bassett. Jose and Tanya to replace

3:49

Taiwan Walker, running it back with

3:51

branded memo. Improvements in the

3:53

bullpen, including David Robertson and Brooks

3:55

Raleigh. Obviously, we could argue,

3:57

from a paper standpoint, how much better this team

4:00

has gotten. But here's the truth. They won a

4:02

hundred and one games last year. And

4:04

they won a hundred and one games in a division

4:06

that was very good with the old

4:09

unbalanced schedule, which disappears this

4:11

year. So you could argue with

4:14

six less games against Atlanta. Maybe

4:16

got the six less against Philadelphia because the Nets

4:18

did a good job of beating up the Philly's.

4:20

But when you're facing everybody

4:23

in Major League Baseball, as opposed to those

4:25

extra games against a really good

4:27

Atlanta team, now you are taking away some games

4:29

against a really bad Washington team that

4:32

the wins should come at a higher

4:34

pace this season. But a hundred

4:36

one's a big number. Let's face it. It's

4:38

the second highest wind total in the

4:40

history of the franchise. But

4:43

between what they did last year,

4:46

between the money that spent, the

4:49

expectations coming into twenty twenty

4:51

three are as high as ever.

4:53

In fact, they're the highest

4:55

they've been in thirty plus years.

4:57

At least if you base it on the over

5:00

under when it comes to wins, which is talk a

5:02

lot about over the last thirty plus

5:04

years because that's the best indicator of

5:06

trying to figure out what the expectations were

5:08

for a season fifteen years ago. Other than

5:10

our own memories of what we personally

5:12

expected, the best documentation you

5:15

can find. To really look at what

5:17

the expectations were for a met

5:19

team going into a season is to look

5:21

at the over under. So this season And

5:23

look, you can go to FanDuel, you can go to DraftKings,

5:25

go to various sportsbooks. In

5:27

general, the number that we're seeing for

5:29

the overrunor for the New York Nets is ninety

5:32

five and a half. Ninety five

5:34

and half in the last thirty

5:37

years going all the way back to

5:39

nineteen ninety because that's the latest

5:41

I could find data on overruners, embedding

5:44

odds, couldn't find anything in the eighties and the

5:46

seventies. So it's really just the sample

5:48

size in the last thirty plus years. This

5:50

is the highest overunder the

5:53

Metz have ever had. Now,

5:55

we've had seasons as we'll go through in

5:57

which expectations have been high, and certainly,

5:59

we remember a few of them in terms of what

6:01

they did in the off season. But when you look

6:03

at the over under, coming into this

6:05

season, It's not only the biggest

6:07

overrun or the meds I've ever had. It's

6:10

kinda significant. Like

6:12

in the last thirty plus years, if I ask

6:14

you to guess right now, How many

6:16

times have the meds gone into a

6:18

season with an over under

6:20

above ninety? It's

6:23

not that big of a number. And it certainly

6:25

hasn't happened a lot in the last fifteen

6:27

years. So

6:29

the expectations to win, and

6:32

that's bottom line. Like, we'll start with the

6:34

minimum expectation. The minimum expectation

6:36

is they gotta be a playoff team, especially with

6:38

the format that we have now if the bets are

6:41

not playing October baseball. And they

6:43

aren't in the postseason for the second straight

6:45

time, which would be the third time in their

6:47

history. They've even made the postseason a

6:49

back toback ears were all thrown at hissy

6:51

Fed. We do an angry Rico's

6:53

all winter long. The

6:55

minimum expectation is to make

6:58

the postseason. Obviously,

7:00

it's how you get there as we learned last year, then that's

7:02

1986 hundred and one games. think we all would have been

7:04

thrilled with a hundred and one. But when you

7:06

lose the division the way they did and you

7:08

collapse against the braves the way you did,

7:11

we don't view the 101 than

7:13

maybe we the way we would view ninety seven

7:15

this year, if it means winning the vision, division

7:17

by seven and a half games. But

7:19

this year, this team comes in with

7:21

ninety five and a half wins

7:24

expectations. Let's go all the way back

7:26

to the beginning. Let's go all the way back to nineteen

7:28

ninety. Now these years, the first few

7:30

years we're gonna go through, right before

7:32

I really remembered what the hell was going

7:35

on. In nineteen ninety, my dad

7:37

would take me and my sister to games but

7:39

I don't remember much. I remember slightly

7:41

cheering for Darryl strawberry and screaming

7:44

Darryl at the top of my lungs. But

7:47

I don't remember much. The match

7:49

in nineteen ninety was really the last

7:51

year of their success, the late eighty success.

7:54

They won ninety one games, but

7:56

their over under was eighty eight. So it's fair to

7:58

say they kinda met their expectations, but

8:00

the reason they didn't make the playoffs is that Pittsburgh

8:02

Pirates won ninety five games. They won

8:05

the national leagues, the first of a couple

8:07

of division titles they won in a row. They won ninety ninety

8:09

one, ninety two. So they won three division titles in

8:11

a row. And I do remember the latter

8:13

part of that pirate run and

8:15

hating them, and hating Doug Draback,

8:18

and hating John Smiley, and Barry

8:20

Bond's and Andy Van Slijk

8:23

and Don Slaught and all

8:25

those shmucks. But in the first year

8:27

of nineteen ninety, The reason the Nets

8:29

didn't win the division besides really

8:31

not playing well in September, playing very mediocre

8:33

baseball. The final month of the season,

8:35

they had a stretch in nineteen ninety. In which

8:37

they 1986 eighteen out of twenty. And they were

8:39

actually in first place in

8:41

early early September. But

8:44

the pirates exceeded expectations. They

8:46

won ninety five games in a year in which

8:48

their over under was only seventy eight. So

8:50

nineteen ninety, you look at and say,

8:52

okay, they met expectations. It was

8:54

supposed to be a high eighties, low nineties

8:56

win team. They won ninety one games, but

8:59

in that day and age, you don't win the

9:01

division. Not gonna go to the postseason.

10:04

So while ninety one wins, would

10:06

have been enough to win the division in two thousand

10:08

fifteen and subsequently

10:11

go to the world series. In nineteen

10:13

ninety, it was a little bit different. Nineteen

10:16

ninety 1986. That

10:18

was the year we lost Daryl Strawberry.

10:21

Right? So straw goes to free Audacy,

10:23

Cash and doesn't 1986 pay him. The

10:26

Nets decide, oh, let's let's see. How

10:28

do we replace Daryl strawberry? Oh, I got

10:30

an idea. Let's sign Vince Coleman.

10:33

So they signed Vince Coleman, the Nets

10:35

go into the season with the same win total

10:37

expectation as a year earlier. How

10:39

about that? That's kinda

10:41

weird to me. Like, you

10:43

lose your best player. You

10:45

replace him with a guy who sure he

10:48

stole lot of bases back in the day with Saint

10:50

Louis. But was never a great player. It was

10:52

not an impact player the way Daryl was.

10:54

And you're over and under going into the years the exact

10:56

same number of eighty eight. Well,

10:59

they did win eighty eight. That year,

11:01

that's when the Metz collapse really began.

11:03

They won seventy seven games that

11:05

season. And they went into the year.

11:08

With the highest overunder of any

11:10

NLE's team. So the expectation

11:13

going into nineteen ninety one was

11:15

that They'd be right there to win the National

11:17

League East. They did not. And yet again,

11:19

the Pittsburgh Pirates won

11:21

a lot of games and won ninety eight games that year

11:23

when their second straight divisional title and

11:26

again, over exceeded

11:28

their expectations. The pirates

11:30

over under coming into the year, higher

11:32

than the previous year, but still not that many was

11:34

only eighty five. So

11:36

nineteen ninety one, high

11:39

expectations the Mats Under

11:41

achieve. Now, now we get to my

11:43

wheelhouse of really starting to understand

11:45

baseball. At eight years old, turning

11:47

into nine, I always say nineteen ninety two.

11:50

Is that first year where I

11:52

started to get it? The first year where

11:55

I'm getting the scorecards. I'm filling

11:57

it out. My dad's teaching me baseball.

11:59

And how lucky am I? That the first

12:01

year of understanding baseball is

12:03

the is the nineteen ninety

12:05

two mets? I mean,

12:08

geez, you talk about being hit with the stick

12:10

of crappiness They'll get

12:12

any crappier than that. It's

12:14

the opposite of Yankee fans who started understanding

12:16

baseball in nineteen ninety six. Oh,

12:19

yeah, my first year of getting baseball was nineteen

12:21

ninety eight. I saw the yankees win hundred and fourteen

12:23

games. My first year was nineteen ninety

12:25

two. And I do recall that the Metz

12:27

went into that season with high

12:29

expectations because of the off season.

12:32

They stole Bobby Bonilla from the

12:34

Pittsburgh Pirates, the team that had won the

12:36

two previous divisions, they had

12:38

gone out and signed Eddie Murray, who

12:40

has had a great career up to

12:43

that point even though was in his mid thirties.

12:45

More recently, he had been with the Dodgers, but obviously,

12:47

before that, was an ortho. So

12:49

the Nets go out. And they add

12:52

Bobby Bow and Eddie Murray.

12:55

And their expectation the

12:57

exact same expectation as a year

12:59

earlier, and over under of eighty

13:01

eight and a half. That number

13:03

of eighty eight and a half, believe it or not,

13:06

the highest in Major League Baseball.

13:09

So the Mats went into

13:11

nineteen ninety two off

13:13

a spending spree as

13:15

a team that was legitimate championship contender,

13:19

highest over under in all

13:21

of major league baseball and do remember

13:23

that. I remember that feeling going into the

13:25

season of we got Punea, we

13:28

got Murray. This is gonna be

13:30

a really good year. My dad's telling me story

13:32

is about eighty six. This is gonna

13:34

be our eighty six and what a

13:36

shmuck eye was. What a lesson. Into

13:39

crappy sports. The

13:41

bets were bad that year. They went

13:43

seventy two and

13:45

ninety. And,

13:48

yes, the Pittsburgh Pirates won the NFL

13:50

East again and again didn't

13:52

have huge expectations. Their over under

13:54

again was eighty five they went out in one

13:57

ninety six games. So you start

13:59

to notice a pattern between ninety one and ninety

14:01

two, and that's the bets have

14:03

high expectations. People believe they're gonna

14:05

be good and it doesn't work out. Now

14:07

we get to nineteen ninety three. Nineteen

14:10

ninety three. We know about this

14:12

team all these years later, thirty years later,

14:15

as the worst team money could buy. But

14:17

they went in to nineteen

14:19

ninety three with an overrunor

14:22

of eighty four, a little bit down from previous

14:24

years, but still not bad. It was the

14:26

second highest in the National E. Only

14:29

the Cardinals had a higher over under.

14:31

So the expectation again was

14:33

they're gonna be in this thing. And I have a very vivid

14:35

memory from opening day nineteen ninety three.

14:39

WFA had the Metz at the time,

14:41

and they did a pre game show, and they

14:43

have like a roundtable discussion. And

14:45

I'll never forget Gary Cohen saying

14:48

in front of the crowd, the

14:50

vets have as good a chance to win this

14:52

division as anybody else. That was

14:54

the bar he set. And the crowd

14:57

cheer like, yeah, damn right, Gary.

14:59

You tell him. Well, that team

15:01

went out in one fifty nine games and

15:03

was simply one of the worst teams we've

15:05

ever seen. So of all the years

15:08

of expectations, over under eighty

15:10

four, fifty nine wins,

15:13

that's a minus twenty five. The Philly's

15:15

won the division that year. They came out of nowhere

15:17

sort

15:17

of. They were supposed to be an average

15:19

team. They won ninety seven games. They won the pet.
