0:08

our show: We. Do a lot of

0:10

research for our stories, but we also

0:12

aren't you're boring high school history class

0:14

so some details and scenes are dramatized.

0:16

Did a story contains descriptions of pregnancy

0:19

last that some listeners may find distressing.

0:21

It. Also includes M P G thirteen language

0:23

that could make a proper lady fate.

0:25

So please be advised. It's

0:37

the morning of April Twelfth, Nineteen Fifty

0:39

Six and Grace Kelly is sitting on

0:41

the deck of a huge ocean liner.

0:43

She's wearing a silk Co and a

0:45

large white hat. Her poodle Oliver is

0:47

snuggled next to her. She looks over

0:49

at her parents and gives them a

0:51

smile. But. Underneath she's a

0:53

big pile of nerves. Because.

0:55

When Gray steps off this boat,

0:57

she's starting an entirely new life.

1:01

She was hoping the eight a boat

1:03

trip would give her time to relax,

1:05

but that's hard when there are sixty

1:07

six friends and family members on board

1:09

with you, plus a dozen or so

1:11

reporters who are here to cover Greece's

1:14

every move. A

1:17

sleek white yacht pulls up next to the

1:19

ocean liner and Grace jumps to her feet.

1:22

She. Scans the yacht until finally her

1:24

eyes land on a handsome man dressed

1:26

in a navy suit grace catches her

1:28

breath as she stares at. The

1:31

man salutes her and her family, and

1:33

then he and Grace lock eyes. For

1:35

a moment, it's like they're the only

1:37

two people in the world. Grace can't

1:39

believe how lucky. She. Is. This

1:42

man is her fiance and there are

1:44

about to get married. But first he's

1:46

whisking her away on the open sea.

1:48

This shit is basically straight out of

1:51

a romance novel. if we're being honest

1:53

year yeah, I mean who doesn't wanna

1:55

be saluted by their fiance? It's the

1:57

most romantic thing you can do. It.

2:00

No, that's what. Somehow

2:02

it gets even better. Graces the

2:04

on say is an honest to

2:06

god prince. Prince. Rainier

2:09

of Monaco Grace carefully makes

2:11

her way on terrain, years

2:13

yard dog still in hand,

2:15

but she notices that something

2:17

about him seems more staff

2:19

more formal them when she

2:21

last saw him. And then

2:23

instead of leaning over to

2:25

kiss her rainy or offers

2:27

her a handshake, Putting

2:29

on a guy's. Offer me when I try to to.

2:32

I know just when you thought I salute couldn't

2:34

get. More romantic here you live in know,

2:36

I know, I needed

2:38

Super awkward, but they are both nervous.

2:40

It's been almost a month since they've

2:42

seen each other and and a lot

2:44

of ways they're starting over. Plus.

2:47

Hundreds of people are watching this

2:49

moment from the decks of both

2:51

ships, and even from Monaco sore

2:53

in the distance. It is

2:56

absolutely ridiculous that on this ocean liner

2:58

is the price. Ideally get your own

3:00

boat. I know it is really weird

3:03

but three tries to keep her smiles

3:05

at me or suffer princess she's about

3:07

to become. But even that. Is starting

3:09

to get hard. Her

3:12

ears ring as the ocean. Liner been layers

3:15

at Horn then of course of

3:17

horn from other yards in the

3:19

harbor. Time then and as the

3:21

royal yacht enters the harbor ear

3:23

piercing fire was shoot off followed

3:25

by San and blasts My god

3:28

and had hop off the mayhem

3:30

a fan started playing the Star

3:32

Spangled Banner. Grace tries to relax

3:34

her grip on the railing and

3:36

much harm but then hundreds of

3:39

a red and white carnations drop

3:41

from a plane flying above Lake

3:43

is. This engagement or is this to.

3:45

Somebody marrying the country of America.

3:48

I'd All right yeah, it's basically a little say.

3:50

I'm glad Juri. Of much very patriotic.

3:53

and greece has never experienced anything

3:55

quite like this before it's incredibly

3:57

overwhelming and she's used to play

3:59

various roles. I mean, she is

4:01

an Oscar winner after all, but

4:04

this? A princess? This

4:06

is totally new territory. And

4:09

as happy as Grace is to be marrying

4:11

her prince charming, she's starting to realize that

4:13

this role might come with a whole lot

4:15

more than she bargained for. But what

4:18

Grace doesn't know yet is just how much

4:20

this role will cost her, including

4:23

her freedom, her happiness, and

4:26

eventually, her life. If

Wondery, I'm Brooke Ziffrin. Arita

6:00

Seymour Williams, and even

6:02

the royals. This

6:12

two-part series is all about the

6:14

legendary actress and fashion icon Grace

6:16

Kelly. In part one, Grace

6:18

fought her way from wannabe performer to

6:21

silver screen queen. Now she's

6:23

auditioning for the role of a lifetime, princess.

6:26

But unlike her characters on the big

6:28

screen, this role is forever. Whether

6:31

she wants that or not. This

6:33

is part two. Princess interrupted.

6:35

All this ladies is in

6:38

gold. Okay

6:42

Arita, we're going to turn back the clock about a

6:45

year to before Grace Kelly ever

6:47

met Prince Rainier. So

6:49

it's May of 1955 and 25-year-old Grace is in

6:51

France. She's

6:55

been here for a few weeks for the Cannes Film

6:57

Festival. It's technically a work

6:59

trip, but escaping the US for some

7:01

sunshine in the south of France has

7:03

been just what she needed. Winning

7:06

her first Oscar was a triumph, but

7:08

it didn't immediately solve all of her

7:10

problems. For one thing, her

7:13

family still sucks. And

7:15

now more than ever, these roles and

7:17

awards don't mean much without a partner

7:19

to share them with. Grace could

7:21

have any man with a snap of

7:23

her perfectly manicured fingers. But

7:26

she wants something more serious, more

7:28

permanent. And she has yet to

7:30

find that person. Today, she's

7:32

driving through the winding hills of Monaco

7:34

on her way to a publicity photo

7:36

shoot. So in case

7:38

you haven't seen a James Bond movie,

7:40

Monaco is a tiny country just an

7:42

hour up the coast from Cannes. It's

7:45

known for its casinos and colorful buildings

7:47

on the water. Which

7:49

sounds like an amazing place to

7:51

visit, but Grace is

7:54

not having it. The photo

7:56

shoot today is with the Crown Prince of

7:58

Monaco, but she'd rather... be

8:00

anywhere else. For

8:02

one thing, this photo shoot wasn't even

8:04

her idea. An editor friend from Paris

8:07

Match magazine asked her to pose with

8:09

the bachelor Prince Rainier as a favor,

8:12

and Grace said yes. And on top

8:14

of that, Grace has already had a rough day.

8:16

You know the kind of day

8:19

where just like everything goes wrong? Yeah,

8:21

a day that ends in Y for me. Exactly.

8:24

It's the days Limp Biscuit was talking

8:26

about in that banger hit. So first,

8:29

Grace woke up late, and then the

8:31

electricity went out at the hotel so

8:33

she couldn't dry her hair or iron

8:35

her clothes. So she headed

8:37

to the palace with wet hair, and

8:39

the only non-wrinkled dress she has, which

8:42

of course is her least favorite one.

8:44

Of course. And then the car

8:46

she was in got into a fender bender. Wow.

8:50

The accident wasn't a big deal, but I

8:53

mean really, how much can one girl take

8:55

for the love of God? Yep, just adds

8:57

up. Yeah. And the icing on the cake,

9:00

when Grace finally makes it to the

9:02

palace, a butler tells her that Prince

9:04

Rainier is running late. And

9:07

not for a valiant reason, like saving

9:09

kittens from a burning building, he's hanging

9:11

out with friends. So

9:14

Grace, of course, is pissed. She's like,

9:16

excuse me, I have places to be. Who died and

9:19

made him royalty? I love the idea of just like

9:21

being completely honest. Like I'm just hanging out with friends

9:23

or I'm just sitting on my bed in a towel.

9:25

That's why I'm late. That's

9:28

picaresha behavior, I think. If

9:31

we're going to say it. You're not wrong. So

9:33

Grace agrees to take a tour of the

9:36

palace's rooms while she's waiting for the Prince. But

9:39

after an hour, she wants to leave.

9:41

She's used to being the VIP. I mean, I hate

9:44

to keep bringing this up, but she did just

9:46

win an Oscar. Wow. Should we start

9:48

taking shots every time you say that? Please

9:51

do. Yes, word is that

9:53

the Prince is a quote, stuffy

9:55

fellow anyway. So just as

9:57

Grace starts looking for an exit, the Prince

10:00

strolls in like he's not an hour late.

10:02

Grace and Rainier's eyes meet, and

10:05

she can't help but notice that

10:07

this guy seems far from stuffy.

10:10

In fact, he's young and handsome. He's

10:12

got dark hair and a sleek mustache.

10:15

But Grace pushes these thoughts away. Screw

10:18

dreamy dark curls, she's pissed off right

10:20

now. A photographer snaps a

10:22

picture of the two of them, and Rainier

10:24

holds his hand out. Grace

10:27

hesitates. She wishes she could

10:29

give him the cold shoulder, but

10:31

she's too well-trained. She's

10:33

gotta perform for the cameras. So

10:35

she shakes his hand and gives

10:37

him a small smile. To Grace's

10:39

surprise, Rainier looks away, like

10:42

he's intimidated by her. He's

10:44

acting almost shy, which Grace

10:47

wasn't expecting. Rainier offers to

10:49

show her around the palace. Grace

10:51

is like, been there, done that. So

10:54

he offers a tour of the private

10:56

gardens and zoo instead. And

10:58

Grace is like, a zoo? I'd love to.

11:01

Then she pushes into the ground, frees all

11:03

the animals from their cages, and rifts off

11:05

her mask to reveal that she's me in

11:07

disguise. Has this been approved?

11:11

Apparently. I was like, you mentioned zoo. Brooke's

11:13

gonna go off her rocker. No,

11:16

Grace doesn't care. She obviously agrees to go. And

11:19

on the walk, he tells her

11:21

funny stories about the monkeys and

11:23

the lions he's collected. Oh, no.

11:26

I know, I hate it. But

11:28

Grace is into his stories. And when

11:31

she laughs, she's not

11:33

acting. He's actually charming. And

11:35

then Rainier reaches his hand inside a

11:38

cage to pet a tiger. And

11:40

Grace has to admit, it's kinda

11:42

hot. She could not be me. I

11:45

was gonna say, hot, touching a poor wild

11:47

animal in a cage. I know. Raise

11:50

your standards, Grace. Yeah, now

11:52

Rainier and Grace keep sneaking little glances

11:54

at each other. Even with

11:57

the cameras around, she catches herself leaning

11:59

toward him. And judging from

12:01

the prince's smile, he's pretty excited to be

12:03

with her too. They finally

12:05

say goodbye and Grace turns to leave. But

12:08

the prince stops her. He says he'll be

12:11

coming to visit America soon and asks if she'd like

12:13

to meet up. Grace smiles and

12:15

is like, sure. She

12:18

figures the prince is just being polite, but the

12:20

thought of seeing him again makes her feel kind

12:22

of giddy. When

12:24

Grace gets home, she writes a letter to say thank

12:27

you for the visit, just like her mother taught her.

12:30

She figures that'll be the end of things. But

12:32

then, a week later, she gets a

12:34

reply. And it's long.

12:38

And so is the letter. Oh

12:40

no, Brooke. No

12:43

it's obviously a long letter. And

12:45

she's surprised to hear from him. But the

12:47

real surprise is, Grace can't

12:49

wait to write him back. So

12:53

before we keep going with this blossoming

12:55

romance, Arisha, I'm gonna hit you with

12:58

some monocle facts. Okay. I

13:00

know you're excited. Yeah, can't wait. So the

13:02

country is right next to France. But

13:04

unlike its bigger neighbor, Monaco

13:06

has a constitutional monarchy, aka

13:08

their royal family holds some

13:10

political power. Monaco

13:13

sits along the coast of the

13:15

Mediterranean Sea and it's super tiny.

13:17

And when I say tiny, I mean less than

13:19

one square mile. Oh, very tiny.

13:22

Yeah, it would basically take you about 2000

13:25

steps to walk across the whole thing. So

13:27

no one's getting their 10,000 steps in Monaco,

13:29

are they? Yep, exactly. So

13:31

at the time of Grace's visit,

13:34

Prince Rainier is desperately searching for a

13:36

wife. He's almost 32 years

13:38

old and has only had one serious

13:40

relationship so far. But the

13:43

pressure is growing for him to produce an heir. Because

13:46

of a 1918 treaty with France, Monaco

13:49

will actually revert back to

13:51

France if his bloodline ends. So

13:54

he's got to keep this 700 year old dynasty

13:56

going. A lot of pressure. Yeah, this may have

13:58

been on his mind when he. that Grace,

14:00

because like, geez, nothing like carrying the whole

14:02

weight of the country on your shoulders. On

14:05

your sperm, my god. Right,

14:07

yeah. But when Grace visited

14:09

the prince, finding a future king for a

14:11

husband was definitely not on her bucket list.

14:14

Grace is looking to settle down, but

14:16

who sets their standards at royalty? I

14:19

mean, come on. But

14:21

expectations aside, Grace is happy to have a

14:23

prince as a pen pal. At

14:25

first, it's just polite correspondence, but the

14:28

more they write, the more they get

14:30

to know each other. Rainier's a great

14:32

writer. He's funnier and less shy

14:34

on the page. Screw a crown

14:36

prince. I mean, you gotta have a guy who's funny.

14:40

You can say that again. Even

14:42

Marilyn Monroe says it. Yes, exactly.

14:45

And pretty soon, Grace is writing about

14:47

emotions she usually saves for her method

14:49

acting. None of these letters

14:51

actually exist anymore, but I imagine they

14:53

were the inspiration behind the greatest love

14:56

story of our generation. Twilight,

14:59

stop it. But

15:02

there are still a few things Grace keeps to herself.

15:04

I mean, remember, it is the 1950s. Women

15:08

are supposed to be uncomplicated. So

15:10

basically the same as now. But

15:13

even with her Good Girl Act, these letters

15:15

feel real. In every one, Rainier

15:18

tells her new things he loves about her.

15:20

And it makes her feel truly special. She

15:23

calls their letters a secret treasure garden

15:25

leading him to the woman he's been

15:27

searching for. I mean, I gotta say,

15:29

the way men talk about women back

15:32

then versus now makes me long for

15:34

the simpler time. I know. Now

15:36

it's like, hey, you up? She got that thaa-f.

15:39

This doesn't roll off the tongue as well, you know? Yeah,

15:42

really doesn't. Now Grace starts

15:44

to wonder if maybe Rainier is

15:46

the person she's been searching for.

15:49

Grace had boyfriends, ones who would have wifed

15:51

her up in a second, but

15:53

none of them were good enough for her family. They

15:56

were either in the wrong profession, the wrong

15:58

religion, or two- poor,

16:00

but a prince? That

16:02

couldn't possibly disappoint the Kellys. In

16:05

December of 1955, Grace gets a

16:08

phone call that makes this princess

16:10

idea feel a little less fantasy

16:12

and a little more real. Grace

16:15

is heading home to Philadelphia for the holidays,

16:17

when she gets an unexpected call from one of

16:19

the prince's associates. He tells

16:22

her that the Prince of Monaco is

16:24

coming to dinner, to the Kelly's Christmas

16:26

dinner. Honestly,

16:28

kind of love it. It's a

16:31

Hallmark holiday movie. Literally. I

16:33

know. The prince who's coming for dinner.

16:36

Oh yeah. So, Grace,

16:38

of course, starts feeling all

16:40

the feels. She's stunned, excited,

16:43

terrified. But for once,

16:45

she's less worried about what her family will

16:47

think. She's more worried about

16:49

what Rainier will think. Now

16:51

that she's going to meet the prince again,

16:53

and this time in her hometown, the question

16:55

is, will he still like her?

17:01

It's December 25, 1955,

17:04

and Grace is anxiously waiting in her family's

17:06

living room. Holiday music is

17:08

playing on the record player. Mrs.

17:11

Kelly is setting the table for dinner. Everything

17:13

is in its place. Now,

17:16

Grace just has to wait for Rainier to

17:18

arrive, and pray that for

17:20

once, her family behaves. That

17:22

prayer does not get answered in that household. I

17:25

know. When

17:27

the doorbell rings, Grace straightens up

17:29

and tries her best to project

17:31

cool and collected starlet. Moments

17:34

later, Prince Rainier steps inside the

17:36

Kelly's house. Grace hangs back

17:38

and tries not to stare. They

17:40

know each other so well in letters,

17:42

but they haven't been in the same

17:44

room in months. This could be super

17:47

awkward. Rainier makes a

17:49

beeline for Grace and gives her a warm

17:51

smile. He bows, and Grace

17:53

can feel herself blushing. Rainier

17:55

keeps his attention on her, even as he

17:57

meets the rest of her family. For

18:00

once, Grace is the main attraction in

18:02

the Kelly living room, and it

18:04

feels great. When

18:07

the introductions are over and they all sit down,

18:09

Grace is careful to keep her composure. But

18:12

as the evening drags on, she starts to

18:14

melt under the heat of the prince's stare.

18:17

She's smitten. And thankfully,

18:19

so is her family. Jack

18:22

Kelly offers Rainier's escort cigars.

18:25

Grace's sister Peggy makes everyone laugh.

18:28

And her mom plays the perfect hostess.

18:31

She refreshes drinks and fusses over the

18:33

food. Later that night,

18:35

they're sitting side by side on the

18:37

couch, and Grace feels Rainier's hand close

18:40

around hers. It feels

18:42

sturdy and comforting. Grace never

18:44

thought there could be anything bigger for her than

18:46

being a movie star. But now, a

18:49

way bigger role seems possible. Princess.

18:55

I'd stick with movie star. Honestly,

18:58

same. So

19:00

that Christmas, after just

19:02

four days of romantic walks and

19:04

stolen kisses, Rainier

19:06

proposes. Well,

19:09

when you know, you know. I know, it's

19:11

super fast, but I mean, they've been writing

19:13

letters for months. Plus, she's

19:15

25, and this is literally the plot

19:18

of most Netflix Christmas movies, so who

19:20

can really blame her? Yeah. Grace,

19:23

of course, says hell yeah, and

19:25

for once, her parents also say

19:28

hell yeah. And the

19:30

engagement is on, which is exciting, but

19:32

also means she's about to make some

19:34

headlines. And Grace isn't sure

19:37

if her European fiancé is ready

19:39

for the Hollywood press machine. It's

19:44

about a week after the engagement, and the happy

19:46

couple are back in the Kelly living room. But

19:49

this time, they're snuggled on a love

19:51

seat surrounded by dozens of reporters and

19:53

flashing cameras. The news of the

19:55

engagement is going to get out eventually, and

19:57

it's best to control the narrative. Grace

20:00

calls on reporters one by one. The

20:02

questions they ask are fluffy stuff like how

20:05

many kids they want and how they fell

20:07

in love. She happily

20:09

gives the press her rehearsed answers. Grace

20:12

is used to this kind of attention, but

20:14

when she looks over at Rainier, he's

20:16

visibly glaring at the cameras. And

20:19

his body is super tense. She

20:22

hears him mutter something like, I

20:24

don't belong to MGM. Now,

20:27

this is not the calm and gentle guy

20:29

from his letters. He's clearly pissed,

20:31

and it didn't take much to get him

20:33

there. I mean, is it me or is

20:35

it giving Ben Affleck and JLo? You know

20:37

what? It kind of is, actually. And I

20:39

don't mean that as like a slight. It's

20:42

just like Ben is very much like, uh,

20:44

fuck this media. And JLo's like,

20:46

I'm going to use it to my advantage. Can't

20:48

beat him, join him. Exactly. Yeah.

20:50

And much like JLo, Grace does her best

20:53

to keep a smile on her face. But

20:55

inside, she has to wonder, who is this

20:57

man she's about to marry? And

20:59

considering she spent all of two weeks with

21:02

this guy, it is a reasonable question. Mm-hmm.

21:05

It is. It always is. Yeah.

21:07

But Grace knows that pretty soon, headlines

21:10

about her engagement will be all over

21:12

the country and the world. There's

21:14

no going back now. Weddings

21:19

always have roadblocks. But a

21:21

royal wedding is a whole other level. Working

21:24

with the press isn't the only hoop Grace has to

21:26

jump through on her way to the altar. And

21:28

her problems are bigger than a flaky DJ

21:30

or, if you're me, a pool with a

21:32

DJ or, if you're me,

21:35

a pool with only 30 floating candles blown to

21:37

one corner. Thank you. That was

21:39

coming. It's always going to be coming. So

21:42

first, there's a dowry, like in

21:44

the 19th century, and it's not

21:46

a small one. The

21:48

dinner's team is asking the bride's family to pay

21:50

up a cool $2 million, which is

21:54

roughly $20 million in today's

21:56

money. And apparently, the dowry is

21:58

a longstanding tradition for Europe. aristocratic

22:00

families, but either way, it's

22:02

nuts. It's ridiculous because they're

22:05

royalty. They have money. I

22:07

know. That's how they stay rich. Yeah, they

22:09

steal it from these poor brides. Yes.

22:12

Then the prenup is kind

22:14

of intense. Grace has

22:17

to sign a paper that says if

22:19

by some chance she and Rainier get

22:21

divorced, her future children will stay with

22:24

the royal family. Ooh, that's

22:26

gonna be a no from me, dog. Yeah. I

22:28

don't even want kids. I

22:30

know, seriously. It's extreme, but

22:32

Grace isn't too worried. She

22:35

has no plans to get divorced. Divorce

22:37

in the 1950s is rare. Plus,

22:40

Catholics tend to mate for life. So,

22:43

dowry? Check. Children

22:45

legally bound to the royal family? Check.

22:48

Now there's one final hurdle to clear,

22:51

and it's keeping Grace up at night. It's

22:54

her virginity. Or lack

22:57

thereof. I'm sorry. This

24:47

winter of 1956 and Grace

24:49

is pacing inside a bathroom in a

24:52

Baltimore hospital. She's practically

24:54

sweating through her wool suit. Grace

24:57

walks to the sink and splashes cool

24:59

water onto her face. She's

25:01

been dreading this day from the moment Rainier's

25:03

people put it on her calendar. Grace

25:06

is about to have a fertility test with

25:08

Prince Rainier's personal doctor. It's

25:11

probably going to be uncomfortable, maybe

25:14

even painful, but that's not what Grace

25:16

is worried about. Poking around her

25:18

birthing parts could end her engagement because

25:21

while he's down there, the doctor

25:23

might see that Grace is not

25:25

a virgin. Now to

25:27

be fair, some people aren't born with hymens.

25:30

Okay, coming in as a learned doctor. I

25:32

am a learned doctor. We love to see

25:34

it. Now Grace

25:36

grips the edge of the sink. Rainier

25:39

knows her really well, but he doesn't know

25:41

all of her. Rainier's

25:43

in love with the side of her that

25:45

projects purity and innocence. That's

25:48

who he wants to marry. And it's

25:50

definitely who he wants as a princess of

25:52

Monaco. So there's a lot hanging

25:54

in the balance for Grace. But she

25:56

has a plan. She clears her mind

25:58

and steps into a care. character she's played

26:01

many times before. Sweet,

26:03

never horny, Grace Kelly. She

26:06

calmly runs through her line for Rainier's

26:08

doctor. My hymen

26:10

is not intact. It broke in high

26:13

school, when I was playing sports. Yeah,

26:15

Rugby will do that to you. I've heard. Yep.

26:20

Grace smooths her skirt and walks out

26:22

of the bathroom, down the hall, and

26:25

into her exam room. Showtime.

26:30

So, Aritia, I don't know if

26:33

you were nervous or not, but I

26:35

was not surprised to learn that Grace

26:37

actually passes her fertility test. She puts

26:39

on an Oscar-worthy performance and those gullible

26:42

men believe her virginity story. I

26:44

mean, any guy that's like, I have to test to see if

26:46

this woman is a virgin is an idiot in my book, so

26:48

it can't be that hard to fool them. Yeah,

26:50

that's fair. And speaking of the Oscars,

26:53

the press has been speculating about whether

26:55

she'll keep working once she's a princess.

26:58

They ask Rainier or Grace whenever they get

27:00

a chance. MGM wants to

27:02

know, too. Grace plays it

27:04

coy. She tells reporters she

27:06

still has a contract and that she

27:08

always honors her agreements. But

27:10

behind closed doors, Rainier's little comments to Grace

27:13

make it seem like he thinks being

27:15

Princess of Monaco is a way bigger

27:17

deal than a silly acting career. Despite

27:20

his jabs, in January 1956, Grace

27:24

and Rainier head to Hollywood so she

27:26

can film her new movie musical, High

27:28

Society. But when Rainier sees

27:31

how comfortable she is on set with

27:33

her suave co-stars Bing Crosby

27:35

and Frank Sinatra, he's

27:37

like, wait, this is definitely no

27:39

place for a princess, much less

27:42

my fiancé. And then a

27:44

few weeks later, Grace opens the paper

27:46

to find a surprise quote from Rainier.

27:48

It seems the press caught him off

27:50

guard one day. And when the reporter

27:52

asked him if Grace will keep acting,

27:54

the prince said, quote, no

27:57

more movies for Miss Kelly. I

27:59

would demand that. under retraction. Same.

28:03

And Grace is stunned because they

28:05

did not decide this together. But

28:08

it's clear to her that Rainier's mind is made

28:10

up. So she decides to go

28:12

along with it. For now. She's

28:15

confident that Rainier will chill out eventually.

28:18

And when the right film comes along, she'll get back

28:20

in the game. But until then,

28:22

she's not entirely sad to say

28:24

smell-ya-later to Hollywood. And

28:27

sadly, aging in Hollywood can

28:29

be scary if you're a woman. Particularly

28:31

in the 1950s. Grace

28:33

doesn't want to be the one who gets called early

28:35

to set for extra makeup. Because

28:38

from there, you're basically put out to pastor.

28:41

Which like, she's not wrong, but keep in

28:43

mind this woman is only 26. I

28:46

know, that's what's so absolutely ridiculous.

28:48

I know. It pisses me

28:50

off. Because she's gorgeous. God. I

28:53

mean, based off that, we need to head to our nursing

28:55

homes. I know,

28:57

seriously. Now that seems like

28:59

a young age to be worried about retirement. But

29:02

26 years old in 1956 is definitely not

29:04

the same as 26 today. So

29:06

I guess we can hold off on the retirement homes.

29:09

And since Grace is already worried about

29:11

aging out of Hollywood, maybe it is time

29:13

for Plan B. Marriage and

29:16

motherhood. And on April 12th, 1956, Plan

29:18

B becomes official. Grace

29:23

arrives by ocean liner with her family and a

29:25

boatload of reporters and steps

29:27

onto her fiance's yacht. This

29:30

brings us back to the moment where we started. One

29:33

that from the outside seems so

29:35

romantic. But the arrival is

29:37

anything but, considering how many people are a

29:39

part of it. Six days

29:41

later, the wedding is

29:43

more of the same. Hundreds

29:45

upon hundreds of guests come to ogle

29:48

at the newly married couple. But

29:50

with rings exchanged, Grace is now

29:52

a princess. And she won't

29:54

be able to escape all the bejeweled baggage that

29:56

comes with it. Two

30:01

months later, Grace and Rainier return

30:03

home from their fabulous honeymoon, a

30:06

seven-week cruise around the Mediterranean on

30:08

his yacht. Oh my god. I

30:10

cannot even fathom. I know, I

30:12

know. Seven weeks? I'm so jealous.

30:14

Yeah. Me too. But

30:17

Grace has a hard time settling into

30:19

palace life. Rainier is

30:21

busy with his princely duties, which means Grace

30:23

spends a lot of time alone. She

30:26

tries to find ways to be helpful, like

30:28

rearranging flowers in the palace. But

30:30

her help isn't really wanted. Or

30:32

needed. Monaco's palace is a

30:35

finely tuned machine, so she has to find

30:37

another way to pull her weight. Grace

30:40

sets her sights on becoming Monaco's

30:42

perfect princess. She spends hours

30:44

in the library studying people like Queen

30:46

Victoria. She starts her own charity.

30:49

And she channels her 1940s style of

30:51

acting. The one where she

30:54

hides any ugly emotions and is just

30:56

the smiling armpiece. And it

30:58

works. Grace charms the people

31:00

of Monaco and even the French president.

31:03

But as we've seen again and again

31:05

on this show, being a successful princess

31:07

really means one thing above all. Making

31:10

babies, of course, the most important.

31:13

Oh, I'm so surprised. Yep.

31:15

But Grace gets started on

31:17

this ASAP. In less

31:19

than a year after the wedding, in January 1957, Grace

31:21

gives birth to a healthy daughter.

31:26

The whole country celebrates. We're

31:28

talking a 21-canon salute, billboards

31:31

announcing the birth, and

31:34

free champagne for the people of Monaco. See,

31:36

now that's a country that loves its people.

31:39

Exactly. And then Grace

31:41

has another baby the following year. This

31:44

one is a son, aka the long-awaited

31:47

heir to the throne. So

31:50

they celebrate even more. One

31:52

hundred and one cannons. Which I'll be

31:54

honest, feels a little overkill. And unfair.

31:57

21 to 101. Tell me. Your

32:00

gender is less important than another

32:02

gender without telling you that. That's a really good

32:04

point. And luckily for Grace, she

32:06

has done her birthing duties perfectly.

32:09

And Rainier is over the moon to be a

32:11

dad. Between the baby-making

32:13

and her starlet beauty, Grace becomes

32:16

the It Princess in Europe. And

32:19

with that status comes a lot of press.

32:22

Some of it is great publicity for Monaco

32:24

and boosts their economy. But

32:26

a lot of it is invasive. Like

32:28

when Grace had her first baby, photographers planned

32:31

to bribe the ambulance to slow down on

32:33

the way to the hospital so they could

32:35

get a picture. What

32:37

is this, America? Seriously, it's awful. In

32:40

the end though, Grace and Rainier opted for

32:42

a private berth at the palace, so no

32:44

ambulance needed thankfully. But the

32:46

public attention only gets worse as their kids

32:49

get older. Not only for

32:51

the family's privacy, but also for her

32:53

and Rainier's relationship. Grace

32:55

and Rainier start to fight a

32:58

lot, and over everything. Like how

33:00

to raise the kids, or about

33:02

her hair. One day he

33:04

blows up at her for getting her hair cut too

33:06

short. He probably also blew up because he was like,

33:09

how are you so good at sex? And she's like,

33:11

sports in high school. Yep,

33:14

rugby will teach you that. Now

33:16

Grace quickly realizes that the

33:18

prince is moody and has

33:20

an awful temper. And

33:22

when he isn't having a fit, sometimes

33:25

he ignores her for hours. Grace

33:28

feels like she has to walk on eggshells around

33:30

her husband. Eventually she starts

33:32

avoiding Rainier and his outbursts. The

33:35

worst things get with Rainier, the worst

33:37

Grace feels. She loves her

33:40

kids, but her marriage is not the fairy tale

33:42

she signed up for. And

33:44

she misses acting. Plus she

33:46

ended her career just as she was

33:48

really getting going. Then worst

33:50

of all, Grace suffers

33:52

two miscarriages in a row,

33:55

which throws her into a deep depression.

33:58

She starts sleeping a lot. and

34:00

avoiding company. But then,

34:02

in 1962, six years

34:05

after her last Hollywood film debuted, Hitchcock

34:07

writes to Grace and begs her to

34:09

come out of retirement for a movie

34:11

called Marnie. The role is

34:14

gritty and a little risque. Grace

34:16

would kill to do a challenging film

34:18

with her favorite director. She

34:20

thinks Rainier will never let her, but

34:23

she asks anyway. And she's

34:25

shocked when he encourages her to do it. Rainier

34:27

is a grumpy bastard, but even he

34:30

can see that she's miserable. Grace

34:32

starts packing her bags for L.A. She

34:35

can see her future again. But

34:38

that future is about to go

34:40

poof. A

34:45

few months later, Grace sits at a desk in

34:47

her room at the palace. She's

34:49

writing a letter that's now stained with tears.

34:52

She crumples up the paper and throws it

34:54

toward an overflowing garbage can. She's

34:57

wasted a lot of paper this afternoon

34:59

trying to explain to Hitchcock why she

35:01

can't do Marnie anymore. Grace's

35:04

role as a princess has once again come

35:06

between her and her craft, this

35:08

time thanks to the people of Monaco.

35:11

When they got wind of the film, they

35:13

were furious. They do not

35:15

want their elegant and pure princess to kiss

35:18

other men on screen. Listen,

35:20

they should worry less about what

35:22

someone else is doing with their lips and

35:25

more about that free champagne they got. I

35:27

was just gonna say, you think they'd be a little looser. All

35:30

buzzed on champagne. They need more

35:32

champagne, clearly. This

35:35

is one of those things I don't want to be a

35:38

princess, but I would be a princess just to spite

35:40

people. You're like, oh, you don't want me to

35:42

be in this movie? I'm gonna be in this movie

35:44

10 times harder now. We love a petty princess. Thank

35:46

you. That's what the world needs more

35:48

of is petty princesses. Exactly. But

35:51

Grace is not petty and has to

35:53

make a hard choice. She always thought she'd

35:55

make it back to the screen. And she

35:57

was so close. But now? She

36:00

has to walk away. Giving up acting

36:02

this time is so much harder than before

36:04

because now Grace knows it's

36:07

permanent. She wipes her eyes

36:09

and reaches for another piece of paper. She

36:11

writes a few words, puts the paper

36:13

into an envelope, and carries it out of

36:15

a room. Now the only roles

36:17

left for her are wife, royal

36:20

baby maker, and perfect mother. But

36:22

even these jobs won't last

36:25

forever. Looking

37:06

years later, in the summer of 1967, Grace,

37:09

now 37, wakes up in a

37:11

bed that isn't hers. She's

37:13

been on vacation in London with her family, her

37:16

husband, her oldest daughter Caroline, her

37:18

son Albert, and now a third

37:21

kid, Princess Stephanie. Plus,

37:23

Grace is 20 weeks pregnant with their

37:25

fourth child. She tries to sit

37:27

up, but she feels a sharp pain in her stomach

37:29

and has to lie back down. And

37:32

then she remembers where she is, the

37:34

hospital. Oh, no. I know. Grace's

37:37

mind has just one terrifying

37:39

question. Is the baby

37:41

okay? She reaches out for a

37:43

hand to hold, but there's no one here.

37:46

Grace asked Rainier to stay back at the hotel

37:48

with her kids. So now she's

37:50

here all alone. The

37:53

doctor enters her room, but his presence

37:55

is anything but comforting. The

37:58

doctor looks serious and nervous. as

38:00

he tells Grace that she miscarried.

38:02

Come on. Her heart

38:05

shatters. Her baby is

38:07

gone. Grace has had

38:09

miscarriages before, but she knows this

38:11

one is different. The doctor

38:13

goes on to tell her that she miscarried weeks

38:15

before today, but her body's

38:17

hormones got confused and kept mimicking the

38:19

signs of pregnancy. And

38:22

then the doctor gives Grace more bad news. After

38:25

what happened, she can't have any

38:27

more children. There's a high

38:29

probability that this would happen again. Grace

38:32

feels numb as she watches the doctor

38:34

leave. Her children have

38:36

been her light through all of the issues

38:38

with the rainy air and having to

38:41

walk away from her career. And

38:43

now she can't have any more. Grace

38:45

has always been able to find a way to get what

38:47

she wants through hard work, sheer

38:50

will, and a little luck, but

38:52

no more. There's nothing she can

38:54

do to change this. Now

38:56

all Grace can do is hold herself

38:59

together for the three children she has

39:01

left. Over

39:05

the next seven years, Grace is determined to

39:07

be a good mother for her prince and

39:09

princesses, but the loss of her fourth

39:11

child always stays with her. She

39:14

becomes softer and more indulgent with her

39:16

kids and extra protective.

39:19

The kids can't even sleep over at their friend's

39:21

houses. Don't tell me she doesn't even

39:23

leave the money for pizza. Nope, she

39:25

has to eat apples. Oh. Meanwhile,

39:29

Rainier's temper has gotten out

39:31

of hand. He's even taking

39:33

his anger out on the kids now. Like

39:36

he'll scream at his son, Elbert, when he

39:38

loses a tennis match. Grace responds

39:40

by being submissive with a lot

39:42

of cold shoulder thrown in. By

39:45

the early 1970s, Grace and Rainier have

39:48

grown even farther apart and eventually

39:50

start living separate lives, but

39:52

they stay married. Remember, Grace

39:55

can't leave. Her children belong to

39:57

the Monaco Royal House. So

39:59

if she walks in, away, she has to leave

40:01

her children behind. And she's not gonna

40:03

do that, no matter how hard

40:05

parenting can be. It's

40:10

a summer day and 44-year-old Grace

40:12

is stretched out poolside at one

40:14

of Monaco's luxury beach clubs. The

40:17

sun is shining as she shakes her blonde

40:19

hair out from her up-do. Her

40:21

flawless tan almost makes her feel like

40:24

a movie star again. Grace

40:26

needs this relaxing afternoon because forget

40:28

about being a princess, being

40:31

a parent to teenagers is

40:33

stressful. Grace's oldest

40:35

daughter, 17-year-old Caroline, is rebelling

40:37

like a typical teenager. Stuff

40:40

like drinking and going to clubs, but

40:43

unlike a typical teenager, her behavior

40:45

makes headlines. Of course it does.

40:48

And Grace knows she's made plenty of

40:50

mistakes trying to keep Caroline in check.

40:53

Lucky for Grace, she gets one more

40:55

shot. She scans the pool

40:57

looking for her youngest daughter, Stephanie. Grace

41:00

spots her and says a quick prayer. Thank

41:03

God for Stephanie. Grace

41:05

doesn't have her career or a

41:07

loving husband or a perfect family, but

41:10

she feels so grateful to have this little girl.

41:13

Maybe third time's the charm and she can

41:15

avoid some of the stress and scandal. Stephanie

41:18

walks along the edge of the pool toward Grace.

41:20

She marches up to her mom and hands her a

41:23

flower. Grace smiles as she

41:25

takes it in sniff. Then

41:27

Stephanie pauses and asks, by

41:30

the way, can I have a hot dog? It's

41:33

a smart move on Stephanie's part. She

41:35

knows they're about to eat a fancy lunch,

41:37

but even at nine years old, Stephanie has

41:39

learned that a little compliment can go a long way.

41:42

Smart kid. And she's right. The

41:44

old Grace would have said no. Stephanie shouldn't

41:46

spoil her lunch. She might

41:48

even be annoyed with Stephanie for asking a question,

41:51

but being strict didn't work on Grace's older daughter.

41:54

Maybe a softer touch is the way forward

41:56

with her youngest, but no matter

41:58

how many hot dogs Grace gives Stephanie, this

42:00

fiery little girl is going to become

42:02

one hell of an angsty teen. And

42:05

Grace's last attempt at being the

42:07

perfect mother is about to meet

42:09

its match. Now

42:13

I want a hot dog. Eight

42:16

years later, Grace is pacing in

42:18

the kitchen of Rocagel, their country

42:20

house. It was once a

42:22

haven for the family away from the press and

42:24

public. But today, it's a

42:26

nightmare. 17-year-old Stephanie

42:28

is giving Grace dagger-eyes from across

42:31

the counter. They've been

42:33

fighting over Stephanie's newest rebellion all

42:35

weekend. She wants to pull

42:37

out of fashion school and become

42:40

a race car driver. Oh, the horror.

42:43

I know. And

42:45

she wants to move in with her boyfriend, who

42:47

is also trying to be a race car driver. Grace

42:50

is at her wit's end with Stephanie's

42:52

antics. It seems her

42:54

gentle parenting attempts were perhaps too

42:56

gentle. Because Grace's once sweet

42:58

daughter has been nothing but trouble as

43:01

a teen. Stephanie was even

43:03

kicked out of one of her high schools. Grace

43:06

had her own wild moments as a teen.

43:08

But ditching a prestigious fashion school to become

43:10

a race car driver, this is

43:12

beyond anything she can handle. It's

43:14

funny because both careers are not

43:17

super secure. I know. But

43:20

race car driver is like dangerous. If she was a

43:22

mother, I'd be like, oh, God, I'm scared. I think

43:24

Grace is most mad because she worked really

43:26

hard to get Stephanie into this fashion school.

43:30

And it doesn't help that menopause has

43:32

hit Grace like a ton of bricks.

43:35

So her hormones are going

43:37

crazy. And she's put on

43:39

weight. And, Reisha, I know we've said this

43:41

time and time again, beauty comes

43:43

in all shapes and sizes. But

43:46

Grace has been known for being

43:48

that slim Hollywood starlet her whole

43:50

life. Her conventional beauty has

43:52

been a suit of armor she could rely

43:54

on to get through life. But now she

43:56

feels like she doesn't even have that. And race car driver is

43:58

a big part of the world. Recently, she's also

44:01

been dealing with chronic splitting headaches.

44:04

So basically, Grace feels like shit.

44:07

So she can't have her daughter adding to the

44:09

shit pile. After they've

44:11

yelled at each other for hours, Grace

44:13

lays down the law. She basically

44:15

tells Stephanie that if she wants the family's

44:17

support, she has to go to school. Remember,

44:20

the girl's 17, so I'm sure she's

44:22

pretty dependent on her parents financially speaking

44:25

at this point. Stephanie

44:27

finally agrees to at least go to

44:29

Paris. She hasn't given up

44:31

on what she wants, but she's done arguing for

44:34

now. Grace lets out a

44:36

sigh of relief, but she also

44:38

remembers what it felt like having to go along

44:40

with what her parents wanted when she was young.

44:43

And she's seen how that hurt her relationship with

44:45

her parents. She doesn't want the

44:47

same for her and her daughter. So

44:49

tomorrow, she'll talk to Stephanie again, and

44:51

everything will be better. Aritia,

44:57

trigger warning, tomorrow

44:59

is anything but better. Stephanie

45:02

needs to head to Paris today,

45:04

and Grace decides to drive her.

45:07

She usually hates to drive, but she

45:09

wants to talk with Stephanie before she

45:11

leaves for school. Grace waves away the chauffeur

45:13

and gets behind the wheel of the car. The

45:16

two make their way down from Rocagel. The

45:19

road is super steep. You're basically driving

45:21

next to a cliff. But

45:24

Grace is more focused on her daughter. She

45:26

wants Stephanie to know that she's loved. And

45:29

this is where our story gets incredibly

45:32

sad. Grace and

45:34

Stephanie don't make it safely to Paris. Grace

45:38

has a stroke in the car and

45:40

drives off of one of Monaco's steep

45:42

cliffs. Oh my god. I

45:44

know. At 52 years old,

45:46

Grace dies from the crash. Communities

45:50

all over the world grieve, and people

45:52

are shocked. Grace Kelly

45:54

was the picture perfect princess,

45:57

graceful and elegant. Someone

45:59

who seemed to have at all, at least from the

46:01

outside looking in. How could

46:03

she have died in such a tragic and random

46:05

way? The world mourns

46:08

a princess interrupted and taken

46:10

far too early. But

46:12

Grace's legacy as Monaco's leading lady lives

46:14

on in her films and her philanthropy.

46:17

And to honor her memory, Prince Rainier

46:19

created the Princess Grace Foundation, a charity

46:21

that has supported emerging artists for over

46:24

40 years. Now

46:26

as for Stephanie, she'll survive the

46:28

crash, but it'll take her decades to

46:30

come to terms with those final hours. Made

46:33

worse when false reports blame

46:35

her for what happened. So,

46:41

Aritia, next week we're actually gonna

46:44

pick up with Stephanie's story and

46:46

what happens to her after the

46:48

car accident. Okay, so

46:51

we're not done. We're not done. But before

46:53

we do move on, let's obviously talk about

46:55

Grace. What are your takeaways

46:57

and thoughts? Well, this should shock

46:59

you, but as soon as you said getting into the

47:02

car and driving, I

47:04

definitely did not go on to Wikipedia to see

47:06

how she died because I was like, this is

47:08

too ominous. We're towards the end. I know, I

47:11

know. And it does seem like a very abrupt ending.

47:14

Yeah, like a car accident. They are

47:16

abrupt endings. Yeah, this story kind of

47:18

makes me sad just because

47:21

she was such a movie star in

47:23

the era of movie stars. Just

47:26

like hearing Grace's story and the fact

47:28

that her family just didn't

47:30

support her ever and until she

47:33

found a prince. And it's kind of like, it's

47:35

that stupid fairy tale that we get fed as kids

47:38

where it's like, oh, happily ever

47:40

after with a prince. And I'm not saying

47:42

you can't want that for yourself, but I'm

47:44

saying that shouldn't be the end all be

47:46

all. That shouldn't be what it takes for

47:48

her family to be like, yeah,

47:51

this kid's all right. Especially because,

47:53

and we've talked about this so many times before,

47:55

but the movies about princes are never

47:57

similar to real life. Like they're never

47:59

different. It's such a happy ending. It's ridiculous.

48:01

And honestly, I can't wait to tell you

48:03

Stephanie's story. I think it might bring some

48:06

much needed closure to Grace's story.

48:08

And it does take

48:10

some unexpected turns like Global

48:13

Pop Star and Circus Groupie

48:15

turns. So I don't even

48:17

know what to think with those phrases.

48:20

I don't know where the story is going, but I'm

48:22

excited. Okay, well, hold
