Welcome to the first article in “The Exiled Zone” series I plan to write. It seems suitable that in this first, short article I introduce myself and this series in general.

You may know me from the audio podcast series on this very site, “Casual Play”, but as I’ve been extremely busy with school lately I’ve had to decide whether I want to play Magic or make a podcast about playing Magic. An obvious decision.

Fortunately, I’ve decided that I do have the time to write a regular article – for now I won’t put a weekly schedule on it although some weeks I might even get more than one per week in, it really depends on what has happened in the world of Magic: The Gathering.

My name is Daniel Palmer and I’m currently thirteen years old, turning fourteen. I live in Australia – what I consider the most beautiful country in the world – and have been playing Magic since Time Spiral. My podcast (Casual Play) was focused on the Casual side of Magic, but this article series will be a mix between competitive discussion and casual discussion. I will try and find a happy medium.

I have been playing Magic competitively for only half a year now but happily belong to a great playgroup whom are really supportive and help me in my deck-building exploits and play-testing. I’d like to give a big thanks to all of them and especially those who donated cards to me in my earlier times of playing – which really gave me a kick-start.

It was just this weekend, after a standard tournament I attended that, as I was about to leave, a man who used to play Magic in its earlier years announced that he’d no use of his cards and didn’t want to see them goto waste – so he is going to post them to me this week!

I see this as a great opportunity to make myself acquainted with a lot of the older Magic cards and I can’t wait to sieve through them. Currently, I play only standard decks.

The deck I am playing at the moment is the Jund Cascade Aggro deck – which means lots of Bituminous Blast, Bloodbraid Elf joy! The next article I write will go into the depths of the deck and explain the decklist, card choices and strategies. I often make decks so be ready for lots of such articles in the future!
