Adults who did not hear the encouragement, the love and the words of affirmation that they needed to hear as children often say, "that's just how I was raised" or "well, mom and dad did their best." Well that may be true, it does not mean it is okay and it certainly shouldn't be passed down to the next generation. 

Consider this:
The words you do NOT hear in childhood, can be just as damaging as hurtful words we do hear. The absence of affirmation can be as destructive as overt abuse.
