Max Verstappen won again at the US Grand Prix, but

0:57

this victory was anything but easy. He's about

1:00

to join Vettel, he's about

1:02

to join Prost, Michael Schumacher and the driver who's chased

1:04

him all the way through. As a man who

1:07

can say that he's won 50 Grand Prix races and

1:09

my word, has he had to work for it all the way

1:10

through. This

1:14

is the final corner of the last lap.

1:16

The Dutch driver looks up and sees a chequered flag

1:18

for his first win. The Dutch driver looks

1:20

up and sees a chequered flag for his first win. For the 50th

1:23

time in Formula 1, Max Verstappen

1:25

takes victory. He wins the US

1:27

Grand Prix once again.

1:34

And news from the FIA stewards

1:36

has come through some four hours

1:38

after the race that Lewis Hamilton and

1:41

Charles Leclerc have indeed been excluded

1:43

from the results for excessive wear

1:45

of their skid pads. It's a slam-dunk

1:48

disqualification which is gutting for

1:50

both Lewis and Charles and shouldn't

1:52

take away from the stunning performances put

1:54

in by both drivers this weekend.

1:57

However, every cloud has a silver lining.

2:00

has a silver lining because everyone

2:02

from second place down gets

2:04

bumped up the order, which is huge

2:06

news for Williams, because

2:09

both of their drivers now score points. Yes,

2:11

both. Logan Sargent scores

2:14

his first ever world championship

2:16

point, and he's done it at his home

2:18

race. And in so doing, he becomes

2:20

the first American to score points in Formula 1

2:23

since Michael Andressi in 1993. There's

2:27

a lot to break down and debrief in this

2:29

episode of F1 Nation, and joining

2:32

me, Tom Clarkson, are Damon Hill

2:34

and chairman of the FIA stewards, Tim

2:37

Mayer. We hope you enjoy the show

2:39

and to kick things off, let's hear from

2:41

the man of the moment, Max Verstappen.

2:51

Max, very well done to you. Another

2:53

brilliant win, but you had to

2:55

fight hard for this one. Talk us through it, both

2:58

the rough and the smooth. Yeah,

3:00

I mean, we had a good start. Then

3:03

the first thing, I tried to be patient,

3:05

but at the same time, you know, following for so

3:07

long, did hurt my tires a little

3:09

bit. But at the same time, I was struggling

3:11

a lot with the brakes compared to yesterday.

3:14

So I couldn't really be that nice on

3:16

them and the tires on the braking

3:18

and just being very inconsistent. And

3:21

that basically carried on for the rest of the race, where

3:23

compared to yesterday, that was just quite

3:26

a big factor because I never really had

3:28

a lot of confidence to be consistent on the braking.

3:31

But nevertheless, I think as a team, we did the right

3:33

strategy. We pitted at the right time. And

3:36

basically, because of that, I could work

3:38

my way forward. So yeah, I

3:40

think we did everything correct today, but I was

3:43

hoping for a little bit more pace because

3:45

I think yesterday we were a lot more competitive.

3:47

At what point in the race did the brake problems

3:50

occur? In terms of lap time, what

3:52

was it costing you? Just lap one. That was the

3:54

only thing that we changed from yesterday. And

3:57

yeah, that made it very difficult. I couldn't get on top

3:59

of it. It's very rare that I have it in

4:01

F1, but today it did come up and

4:04

just made it a bit more difficult. Was there any point

4:06

in the race when you thought I might not win this?

4:09

I mean, once I was in the lead, I think the gap was okay,

4:11

but with a few laps to go, there were some back markers,

4:14

and you know, my tyres were not feeling that great.

4:17

The hard tyre was not very good today, but

4:20

I think the gap was just big enough and

4:22

not too many laps left. Can we

4:24

get a word on win number 50,

4:27

which takes you within one victory

4:29

of the great Alain Prost? It's another

4:32

extraordinary milestone in your career. Yeah,

4:34

I mean, of course, it's a great number,

4:37

still rookie numbers compared to Lewis, but

4:41

yeah, no, for sure, it's a great number. I'm

4:43

very happy with it, very proud of it, but

4:46

yeah, let's try to win a few more.

4:50

Let's celebrate, though, that performance

4:52

by Max, because yes, it was only 2.2 seconds

4:55

at the flag to Lewis Hamilton,

4:57

yet, you know, in a wounded car,

5:00

he still brought it home with the win. I

5:03

think what's interesting about this weekend for

5:06

Max is that Friday was

5:08

very untidy for them. I mean, they really

5:10

struggled, and that car does struggle

5:13

when they have a bumpy track. Singapore

5:15

is another example. They really didn't

5:18

have it all together, and that's why he qualified

5:20

back in sixth position. And

5:22

then second day, they got

5:25

it under control, and that's when you could see the

5:27

body language for that team change

5:29

dramatically. Friday to Saturday,

5:32

two totally different weekends for them. And

5:34

then, of course, they go into Sunday, and

5:36

I stood next to that car

5:39

at the beginning of the sprint race. They still

5:41

hadn't quite figured out whether they were okay.

5:44

And then I stood next to the car at the beginning

5:46

of the race. Body

5:48

language completely different. Christian, before

5:51

the sprint race, looked like a cat on a

5:53

hot tin roof. He really looked uncomfortable.

5:56

Today, totally different thing. He knew

5:58

his guy had it under control. You know, I

6:00

think they felt like the strategy was gonna

6:02

go well and of course it did now

6:05

Damon Let's talk break problems.

6:07

All right racing driver head on

6:09

because max says he was feeling issues

6:12

with the brakes from lap one and

6:14

it resulted in a Confidence problem

6:17

and I don't know just how do you deal

6:20

with that when you're in the cockpit? It's

6:22

in your mind. I think that's that's one thing

6:24

that I'd say it adds it adds

6:26

doubt You don't know what's going to happen

6:29

next You don't know what's gonna happen when

6:31

you hit the brakes and you in the back of your

6:33

mind You're thinking this is gonna catch

6:36

me out So you probably have to wind

6:38

it back a bit from what your maximum

6:40

potential is and then that that makes you

6:42

feel Vulnerable and I don't think

6:44

that's a nice way to go racing So for

6:47

max it would have been annoying but I you

6:49

know, he when he comes on the radio my god He

6:51

doesn't all sound angry, you know, he really

6:54

gives his poor old GP his engineer

6:57

Right old roasting doesn't he but he did

6:59

say please when he was asking GP

7:01

not to talk so he did say I saw

7:03

him in Yes, I think he swore him but then

7:05

I said, please Makes it okay.

7:08

It's it's really interesting to me though Just

7:10

to how much bandwidth some of these

7:12

drivers have to say certain things

7:14

you think about Fernando what he's the

7:16

classic He's got so much bandwidth.

7:19

He's got so many things he can hold in his

7:21

head at one time. He's talking to

7:23

the engineers It's almost like he's

7:25

giving a master class. Whereas you there others

7:28

Don't have his experience Who

7:31

as you say that the voice goes up an

7:33

octave and and you're kind of like

7:35

goodness out. This is gonna go I

7:37

also think that max just enjoys giving

7:39

his engineer a windup I genuinely

7:42

think he's got that much time

7:44

on his hands in that car that he can just

7:47

Decide on a good one. He's got a something

7:49

that's gonna wind him up every time he shows his

7:51

love in different ways He's

7:53

getting stratospheric and he's only 26 years

7:56

old. It's phenomenal and you

7:58

know, he has basically raked

8:01

in all of the results he

8:03

could possibly do when he's had the opportunity of

8:05

a competitive car. I'm just beginning to think, I

8:07

was listening to Tim just talking, and it's

8:09

very easy to look at this race because you could

8:12

look at this race and go, ah, I see it's starting

8:14

to change now, the competitors are

8:16

starting to close the gap, but if you're Red

8:18

Bull and you've sewed up the Constructor Championship and the Driver

8:20

Championship, why would you develop this car? You

8:23

know, they've moved on, so this car is probably

8:25

going to sink into the clutches of the

8:27

guys behind, whereas everyone else is bringing

8:29

them upgrades, Mercedes brought an upgrade here,

8:32

a new floor, and also

8:35

McLaren are also upgrading their cars, everyone's

8:37

pushing like mad to close the gap, so

8:39

we probably will see that in the final few races

8:41

of the year where Max is going to have to deal

8:43

with a bit more pressure, but I'm

8:45

just, my sinking feeling is that we don't,

8:48

mustn't read too much into that, because

8:50

I expect all the benefit that

8:52

they have will go on to the next year's car. I

8:55

mean, those next few positions are worth millions

8:57

and millions and millions of pounds, dollars,

9:00

euros, and so those guys are still

9:02

fighting on the development front, and

9:05

you saw a couple of cars bring in, you know,

9:07

bring in some big new developments,

9:09

you saw the Astins bring it in and it didn't really

9:11

work for them, you saw Hot Spring

9:14

a lot and it didn't really work for them, people

9:16

are still struggling to try and get up the order,

9:19

and for some it's working, McLaren's

9:21

done a great job of the list, you know, half

9:23

a season or so to really get up front, but

9:26

they passed Aston Martin for the

9:28

fourth place in the championship. And

9:31

it's taken Mercedes 18 months

9:34

to find their North Star and find a way

9:36

forward with this car, but as Damon said, the new floor,

9:39

it was only worth, I think, one

9:41

tenth of a second, that's what James Allison told

9:43

us on last week's show, but actually Lewis

9:45

makes the point in the press conference, yes it's worth

9:48

one tenth in reality, but also there's

9:50

another tenth in confidence from the driver

9:52

as well, so Mercedes

9:54

finally, I think, know

9:57

what direction they're headed and now it's just a question

9:59

of time. have they got enough time to close

10:01

the gap before the start of next year on Red Bull? And

10:04

they will be wanting to do that. Because there's a lot

10:06

of kudos, don't forget, in winning.

10:08

You know, I know they don't want to fool

10:10

themselves, but they'll have a win if they can get

10:12

one, that's for sure. And imagine that. I mean,

10:14

today we saw Lewis closing

10:17

down on Max in a race, and

10:22

it really did start to look like this

10:24

is the sort of battle of the titans that we've been hoping

10:27

to see for so long. Now it's back on. You

10:29

know, we've got the prize fighters out there, and

10:32

there's so much at stake between them. And the respect

10:35

between them is still there, Damon. I

10:37

always say, I've said it several times

10:40

on this podcast, that it's when the cameras

10:42

are turned off before the start of the press conference.

10:44

That is the only time that they're together

10:46

in the same room all weekend, apart

10:48

from things like driver's briefings. But that's when

10:51

the headmaster's looking at them. But they're

10:53

happy to chat. They talk about the race,

10:55

they have a little debrief about the performance

10:57

of the tires and where their cars were strong and where

11:00

they were weak. And I

11:02

sense that when we get them wheel to

11:04

wheel, it's going to be massively

11:06

competitive, but very respectful. I

11:08

tell you, in the stewards room, when

11:11

you get a couple of world champions in there

11:13

talking to each other, the

11:15

respect is enormous. And

11:18

it's a very different by play between

11:20

when you've got somebody who's new into

11:22

the championship and a world champion, or

11:25

two people that have just come in side by

11:27

side. The by play between

11:29

those drivers is totally different. They

11:31

know that they have to tell the

11:33

truth in front of the other guy. They might be able to pull

11:35

the wool over a new guy, over somebody

11:38

who's new into the champion. But if you've been

11:40

a three time world champion, you're

11:42

not going to get the wool pulled over your eyes. So it's

11:44

really different for us as stewards

11:47

to see those world champions. And

11:49

as you say, in the press conference, it was

11:52

different as well. You see that respect. You

11:54

see that love of the sport that all

11:56

these guys have and bring to this every

11:58

weekend. in the stewards

12:00

room, come on, give us a little bit of an insight,

12:02

right? So what are the conversations

12:05

like? With these cars that create most

12:07

of their downforce with the underfloor,

12:10

you have to have some way of stopping them from

12:12

just absolutely sending

12:14

the car right down to the ground. And so this

12:17

plank, which is down the middle of the car, is

12:19

a piece of actually, everybody

12:22

has a little bit of different stuff, but jab

12:24

rock is what they mostly call it. And

12:27

it wears, and it wears over the course, and

12:29

that means that you can't go all the

12:31

way down as far as you want. So if

12:33

you wear that plank too

12:35

much, it means the car's been too

12:37

low to the ground, and that downforce that

12:40

you get from that underfloor effect

12:43

is more than we care for them to have. The

12:45

teams are so professional. The

12:48

drivers are so professional that it's

12:50

all about respect. And they respect

12:53

us. We've got an enormous amount of information

12:56

in that room. They know that we've

12:58

got the goods. And we

13:00

respect them. It's not about the

13:02

FIA stewards versus the drivers. I

13:05

always like to say that we're a service provider

13:07

for the teams. We're there to help provide

13:09

a level playing field. And as

13:11

long as we treat them with respect, they tend

13:14

to treat us with respect. My

13:16

biggest mistake ever as a steward is 2016,

13:20

Hamilton and Rothberg start

13:22

of the race in Barcelona, and they

13:24

crash. Both drivers are out. We

13:27

bring them in afterwards. And we decide

13:29

no further action in the end. But Lewis

13:31

says to me, well, what was

13:33

I supposed to do? And

13:36

as a steward, somebody who's never

13:38

driven a Formula One car, I started to tell

13:40

him what I thought he ought to have done. And

13:43

that wasn't respectful of me. He got up, he was a bit mad,

13:45

and he slammed the door and walked out. And

13:47

poor Ron Meadows, his team manager,

13:49

went absolutely white in the face and said,

13:52

oh, I'll get him back to apologize. And they said, actually,

13:54

Ron, I need you to go and apologize

13:57

on my behalf, because it was a stupid

13:59

thing for me to do. do and it's maybe

14:01

not my stupidest thing as a steward

14:04

but I'm not going to tell you the other ones.

15:42

what a race. You were busy out

15:44

there.

15:45

Yeah, it was a race

15:48

of two halves to be honest because we're

15:50

at some great pace on the on the medium after

15:53

a bad start. The hard tire

15:55

was terrible for us. We underfueled

15:57

the car so we had to turn the engine downwards.

16:00

three temps in the engine to save fuel and

16:02

they put the mediums on at the end and we were

16:04

the quickest car on track even with that three-tempe deficit

16:07

which was really promising and just such a shame

16:09

because I think we had the car this weekend Lewis

16:11

and I for one of us to definitely be fighting

16:13

for victory and the story of a season

16:15

that we're standing here saying we missed an opportunity.

16:18

You're frustrated I can look I can see it in your face.

16:20

Yeah personally it's definitely more my

16:22

side this year just it's been very

16:25

very scrappy and I

16:27

don't really know why because it doesn't feel like it's from a lack

16:29

of performance or speed if anything it feels stronger

16:32

than last year yet last year every

16:34

race seemed to go our way so definitely someone

16:36

I want to try and review and go

16:38

from there. Well

16:39

I hope you haven't run out of your luck from

16:42

last year but I'm sure

16:44

it's it's gonna come back but you had

16:46

at least some good wheel-to-wheel action with

16:48

with checker wasn't it? Yeah

16:51

it was I mean this race always offers

16:53

something quite exciting even though

16:55

it's definitely one of the bumpiest out there

16:57

and

16:58

my heel is feeling

17:00

it right now because the cars are so stiff banging

17:02

up and down and you feel a bit sick

17:05

in the car and you get a bit of a headache because it's

17:07

so so abrasive but that's

17:09

what it's about sometimes. The Merc look particularly

17:11

stiff in qualifying anyway more so

17:13

than in the race than other cars. Yeah definitely.

17:16

Well it's not designed for comfort it's

17:19

designed for speed and that's what

17:21

we thought was the fastest way around. Lewis said in

17:23

the press conference that just

17:25

the upgrades gave him a tenth more confidence

17:29

just in the in the car you'd have the

17:31

same feeling? Yeah well probably not

17:33

not this weekend there's a track I've always

17:35

struggled with but I could definitely feel the upgrades there's

17:37

no doubt about it that we had stronger pace this weekend

17:40

than we were anticipating it both well for the next

17:42

two where I think inherently we'll

17:44

be a bit more competitive. Brazil two races time.

17:46

I'm excited for Mexico first we

17:48

had a good good shot there last year but no

17:51

we're we're feeling feeling good we're

17:54

riding a bit of a wave at the moment and things

17:56

are looking really positive into 2024 which to be honest.

18:01

line

20:00

all 200 meters of it that's good because we're

20:02

repaving it later on this winter Tim

20:05

when did you start being a steward because you would have

20:07

had a lot of fun and games with Damon

20:09

and Michael Schumacher well thankfully

20:11

I've never had Damon in the stewards

20:14

room I'm sure he's quite difficult

20:16

to talk around so I it's good I'm really

20:19

pleased not to have done that but I was in the Schumacher

20:22

era 2008 was my first year I always

20:25

understood that the stewards had well we didn't

20:27

have we didn't have the same kind of steward system they have

20:29

now actually yeah yeah it's

20:31

changed completely so you you would

20:33

be up in front of the beat but I can't remember wasn't the same it

20:35

wasn't in the same context and the same setup

20:39

when you after when you were driving I think the stewards

20:41

were more political appointees and I

20:43

mean we have a huge training program

20:46

for stewards we've all come up through various

20:48

championships I mean for myself

20:50

I've got 30 years of experience officiating races

20:53

so you know that's typical of what

20:56

what is out there and and in 30 years

20:58

of being an official maybe but

21:01

some of our listeners may not know that you actually

21:04

have Formula One in your blood

21:06

because son of course of Teddy

21:08

Mayer and we're thinking of McLaren in the 70s

21:11

and James Hunt winning the world championship

21:13

and that's all your family I I

21:16

have at home on

21:18

my wall the original certificate

21:20

of incorporation of McLaren racing

21:23

back in September of 1963 so yes it's been been in

21:27

my blood all the way through my my uncle Timmy

21:30

was a Formula One driver I'm named after him sadly

21:33

he passed away but he was teammates with Bruce

21:35

and my dad was manager and the

21:37

rest is history and I you know I always

21:39

say that motor racing is a

21:41

genetic deficiency Damon here is

21:44

proof positive of that yeah I don't

21:46

know if it's deficiency or it's just

21:49

some sort of strange twist to it

21:51

to the to the DNA chain because actually you

21:53

do get infected with it well Tim that is a beautiful

21:55

segue you talking about your history with

21:58

McLaren so talking about their race

22:01

this weekend because it was an extraordinary turnaround

22:03

actually. Lando Norris was very vocal

22:06

before the weekend saying, look, we

22:09

aren't going to be any good this weekend. Don't get your hopes out.

22:11

And yet he goes and puts the car on the

22:13

front row. You've got to say very solid. Well,

22:16

I think what's interesting about

22:19

this season for McLaren is that they

22:21

really have got their act together in

22:23

terms of the car. I mean, they finally,

22:25

I think, understand the car a lot

22:27

better than they used to. And I think they can make

22:30

the adjustments early on the race weekend

22:33

to get that car on pole for qualifying.

22:35

It's just really remarkable thing to

22:37

see that everybody changed around

22:40

on the order. Walking out on the grid,

22:42

it was quite extraordinary

22:44

because all the wrong people were in all the wrong places.

22:46

So it was just, it was quite a different

22:49

weekend. Tim, it's something we've been saying all

22:51

year is take Max Verstappen out

22:53

of it. And you really do

22:55

have a very close season. It's a very,

22:58

very competitive group of people

23:00

right behind Max. But what's interesting,

23:03

you know, they have struggled on

23:05

race pace, qualifying one lap,

23:07

empty tanks, new tires, they're

23:10

doing well, I think to get the race pace

23:12

is a bit difficult for them. They've got to figure

23:14

out some things to get that pace over the

23:16

course of an entire race. And

23:18

then I think they're going to be right up

23:20

there taking the fight to Red Bull. These regulations

23:23

have been hard for people to figure out. I think it's been

23:25

a hell of a lot of teams scratching their heads

23:28

over how to make these cars consistent,

23:31

not only just on fast

23:33

and slow speed corners, but also in different

23:35

track conditions. They just seem to be people

23:38

are oscillating up and down the grid,

23:40

like you say in the, but that could be a function

23:43

of the tightness of the grid behind

23:45

Max, you know, and so much

23:47

at stake, you know, and that was the ambition

23:49

of the new regulations in a way was to make

23:51

it harder for teams to gain an advantage. And

23:53

that makes the racing closer. But it is difficult

23:56

for us to predict, you know, we're looking

23:58

at it and going, kind of going, are they all looking

24:00

at it going, well we don't know what's going to happen until

24:02

we get there. Look at Aston Martin, who would have said

24:04

they were going to be that far off the pace here

24:07

in Austin. So McLaren

24:09

and Hapdoe made steady progress

24:11

and looking stronger across the board.

24:14

I felt Lando kind of reasserted

24:16

himself within McLaren this weekend. He

24:19

was very quick all

24:21

weekend. I thought the way he managed his tire

24:23

wear was excellent. And I

24:25

was chatting to Mark Weber on the grid actually

24:28

and saying, look, what happened to Oscar in the sprint

24:30

yesterday because he dropped off very quickly. And he said,

24:32

look, Oscar's pace in qualifying

24:35

has been brilliant all year. What he's still

24:37

learning, and let's not forget it's his first season of Formula

24:40

One, he's still learning how to drive

24:42

slowly. Which is quite

24:44

a nice way to put it when you're talking about Formula One. So

24:48

the learning curve is still vertical for him. I

24:50

think what has been extraordinary

24:52

though has been his

24:55

ability to sort of concentrate

24:58

when there's so much pressure on him for such

25:00

a young guy to come in and to have all this

25:03

pressure and do as well

25:05

as he has. I mean, it's

25:07

just remarkable. You

25:09

watch him in the paddock, you watch him on

25:12

the grid, and he's got this sort of aura

25:14

of confidence around him that he's bulletproof.

25:17

And it shows in his pace. Do you get

25:19

frustrated as a rookie? I'm thinking, let's

25:21

go back to 1993, Damon. You got

25:23

a four-time, well, then three-time

25:25

world champion alongside you in Alain Prost. It

25:27

wasn't all plain sailing, was it? And how did you deal

25:30

with the lows? You're

25:32

trying to make some sort of comparison to my experience

25:35

in Oscar Piazza. Is that right? I mean, well,

25:37

Oscar's been casting since, I don't know how old,

25:40

you know, so he's been brought up to be

25:42

a racer. He's

25:44

been identified as having lots of talent,

25:47

and he's forced his way through the other categories

25:49

to get to his position. He feels entitled

25:52

and he feels that he's rightfully there.

25:54

Those things are really important. When you

25:56

arrive in Formula One, you should always think I

25:58

should be here. I thought

26:01

what am I doing here? How did I get here? What

26:03

happened? One minute I was without a job And now

26:05

I'm I'm I've got Alan process a teammate

26:08

so quite a different set of exertion I'm not

26:10

not that not that I didn't think I would would

26:12

ever be able to cope with it But it certainly

26:14

no one had put money on me getting about David.

26:17

We're having a laugh about it Seriously, though. Did

26:19

you have what do they call it imposter syndrome?

26:21

Was that what you were suffering from? Yes, I get it Even

26:23

now Tom why am I here? It's

26:27

um mine was not the normal

26:29

route as you know My route was

26:31

very unusual and bit haphazard

26:34

and required a bit of luck But when I got

26:36

there I knew I was doing and I managed to make it stick

26:38

so but not not the way in which you

26:40

see the young guys Come up into Formula one and the way

26:42

they're coached not only

26:46

In the in their driving but also in their ability

26:49

to deal with the things that happen and the interviews

26:51

and the and all the media And all the rest of it.

26:53

So it's a different they're much more prepared But

26:55

I do think it is hard to overstate

26:58

the step up from Formula two

27:00

Formula three to Formula one I mean

27:02

the weekends are are so much more

27:04

difficult for them So busy

27:07

that and the pressure on them is just intense.

27:09

It's the scrutiny Tim It's the scrutiny

27:12

and and I did not like the scrutiny I

27:14

got informal one I thought you know, a lot of it was far

27:16

too intrusive about this nothing compared to

27:18

what they got now We are outside Ferrari

27:21

it hasn't been really a great weekend

27:24

for Ferrari Well, it was a great Friday

27:26

for the team Charlotte care taking pole

27:28

position But then undoubtedly they

27:30

didn't have the tire where they didn't have the pace

27:33

to keep it going for the full 56 laps

27:35

on Sunday Well, and a one-stop just

27:38

didn't work for anybody that you could see

27:40

a number of teams Thinking they were gonna

27:42

go for one stop and it just it

27:44

just hung him out to dry as we say in America So,

27:46

I mean it just was not the right way to go

27:49

and you can see with his teammate that you know Just

27:51

the difference between those two cars with three sets

27:54

tires instead of two was a huge and

27:56

I think there is Never a

27:59

greater demonstration of a

28:01

driver's ability versus the cars he's been driving

28:03

then when you look at their poll to win

28:06

ratio Charles poll position

28:08

here on friday was the twenty first of his career

28:11

how many victories has he got in Formula One? Five

28:14

I think that tells you an awful lot about the cars he's been driving

28:17

and yet his ability behind the wheel particularly over one

28:19

lap. His determination is huge he's really

28:22

when he gets the bit between his teeth and he's got the car

28:25

underneath him to do it it's very very

28:27

hard to get past him so Tom I've

28:29

got a better stat or clearer stat than

28:31

that if you want basically the twenty first

28:33

career poll, Le Clerc's twenty first career

28:36

poll is the most for any driver without

28:38

a world championship so he's

28:40

been up there with the world champions but he

28:42

has not won this is what we know about Charles and he's

28:44

very good over one lap if it comes

28:47

off but the promise is

28:49

not fulfilled is it? I don't think

28:51

you can put it... are you putting that in? No, I'm

28:53

not putting it in his door at all and I think he's extract...

28:55

the reason he gets poll position is he's able to extract

28:58

the very very maximum out of a car but

29:00

to do that for an entire race distance where you know you

29:02

can't do it with the tyre management anyway

29:05

so that's where they come unstuck is actually

29:07

they wouldn't have had any polls if you like if

29:10

it hadn't been for Charles ringing

29:12

every last drop out of that car It's a busy

29:14

paddock here look, Aston Martin

29:17

and of course Scott our regular

29:19

contributor Pedro de la Rosa with us now Pedro,

29:23

what are the issues with your racing car? Because

29:25

qualifying didn't go so well and actually Lance

29:28

Stroll did an amazing job to get to P9, right?

29:31

Yes, well I mean I think we lacked free

29:34

practice one, we had problems with the issues

29:37

with the brakes so therefore we couldn't

29:39

really optimize the setup or

29:41

with a new aero package therefore that's

29:43

why we took the decision of starting

29:46

from the pit lane we could change

29:48

the setup, we could compare the

29:50

different aero packages basically

29:52

the Qatar aero package from Fernando

29:54

that Fernando drove and

29:56

the new one that Lance drove so that

29:59

we can do a test So

30:01

all we couldn't do in free practice

30:03

one, we did it but during the race. So it

30:06

was actually a test session for you guys as much as anything? Yeah,

30:08

it was a proper test session but

30:11

however we really got some points

30:13

out of it which was a bonus really. Okay and

30:16

what about the performance of the car? Well,

30:18

I mean we really need to analyze

30:21

it in detail, you know, it's difficult to say but the

30:23

actual feeling or you know, and the

30:25

comments from the driver was positive, the

30:28

lance was in the points, was quick,

30:30

was consistent, pretty good I

30:32

would say. Alright, you look like you're in a hurry,

30:35

you can't wait to get to Mexico. Yeah,

30:37

well I'm skipping Mexico

30:40

but I will be in Brazil and I hope to be here

30:42

in the show for longer, analyzing

30:44

every single detail in with more time.

30:47

Celebrating that Aston Martin victory in

30:49

Brazil, is that what we're going to be doing? We will

30:51

celebrate it at one point, so if

30:53

it's Mexico, Brazil or you know...

30:56

It's going to work out what year? No, that

30:58

year, I mean this year, okay? Pedro,

31:01

travel safe, thanks for your time. Thank you. Now

31:04

Damon, there was what I call a proper

31:06

driver in the paddock this weekend.

31:09

Oh, I know where you're going with that. I

31:11

know that you would have been as excited to see him

31:13

as I was. Yeah, and of course we're talking about

31:16

Rory McElroy, legendary

31:19

golfer but also an investor

31:21

in the Alpine Formula One team. Yes, he's

31:23

got quite a few names now, wanting

31:26

to be part of this thing

31:28

called Formula One and it's great to have them

31:30

in there. They bring a lot

31:32

of attention and also hopefully

31:35

we'll get more fans into the sport

31:37

and following their progress and their ups and downs

31:39

with a Formula One team. Piers,

31:42

look, many congratulations to you. You've had

31:44

a really barnstorming weekend, haven't you? It

31:48

was probably the best weekend of

31:50

the season for us, so I really felt

31:52

nice, maximised everything, both

31:54

Q3s, nothing more

31:56

we could get out of it was

31:58

well executed.

31:59

the second fastest pit stop, so we're

32:02

trying to push on all areas and it

32:04

was a very complete weekend. And

32:06

there's consistency as well, it was what, your third

32:09

points finished in the last four races are they? Yeah,

32:12

possibly. I think the last one

32:14

didn't because of track limits, which

32:18

was a bit interesting today in turn six, but

32:20

yeah, that's the way it was.

32:23

On our side we did the best and kept it clean

32:27

and now I'm really happy with what I'm seeing in

32:29

the team, so I just need a faster car which we're

32:31

working on for next year, but in terms of execution it

32:33

was really good. Great job, well done. Thank

32:35

you. Thanks so much for your time, thank you. Again, it's

32:37

another case for one of these teams

32:40

that have been up and yoyoing

32:42

up and down their performance throughout the season,

32:44

so you hesitate to claim

32:47

that they're making good progress just on the

32:49

basis of one result. They want to do better clearly,

32:52

they made quite a lot of claims at the start of the season

32:54

that they were going to, but that never

32:56

seemed to have materialized, but I just got the impression that

32:58

they were on a track which is a

33:01

proper race track, when

33:03

I say proper, it's not a technical track

33:05

like, say, Singapore or something like that, it's

33:08

a place where the cars need

33:10

to perform well in

33:13

extreme conditions, loads

33:15

of gee-load and crosswinds and change

33:17

direction and stuff like that, so

33:20

that's always an indicator as to whether or not fundamentally they

33:22

got the right aerodynamics on the car

33:24

and the right set-up, so I didn't

33:26

think they were too bad for their

33:28

season actually. There are some sections

33:31

on this race track where you're going through

33:33

the S's, turn 2, 3, 4, where

33:36

there's just enormous gee-loads, side

33:38

loadings for these cars, there's

33:41

some real tests of straight

33:44

line speed from turn 11 to turn 12,

33:47

then hard braking, it's a big test.

33:50

Of course, we're overlooking one small hiccup,

33:52

which is that Ocon had to retire

33:55

his car because he was holding his side pod, but all

33:57

things considered, apart from that, they weren't

33:59

too bad. I agree with both of you. I think

34:01

it's been a really strong weekend for

34:03

them. And let's not forget it wasn't so

34:06

long ago That they had the massive

34:08

reshuffle of staff there and

34:10

I think a lot of people were quite discombobulated

34:13

by that within the endstone Outfit so

34:15

things appear to be settling down Matt Harmon

34:18

the technical director is Obviously pushing

34:20

on with his team and the car is getting better

34:22

and better people underestimate how

34:24

much strong management Changes

34:27

the dynamic within a team I you

34:29

look at somebody like Andreas Della for

34:31

instance at McLaren who's just brought

34:33

an awful lot to that team and and in His

34:36

style of management his ability to lead

34:38

people get everybody marching in the same direction

34:41

And when you have that change of personnel,

34:43

it is a big distraction for everybody

34:45

in the team You know, what's with my I'm gonna have my job next

34:48

week. This is a really hard way to do

34:50

business particularly when you're traveling,

34:52

you know from race to race to race and

34:55

As we've heard all the way through Development

34:58

is critical at this point, you

35:00

know for all of these teams They've got to learn about their

35:02

cars and having that strong management

35:04

is a big part of it Now that what

35:07

about alpha tower II you

35:09

kiss an Oda gets the fastest

35:11

lap of the race as well So of course has helped alpha

35:13

tower II close the gap in the

35:16

Constructors Championship to has but you

35:18

here thought did a really good Job this weekend

35:21

Daniel Ricardo back in in the

35:23

adjacent car the pressures back on he's got

35:25

to perform any any delivered I think

35:27

that you key is is an underrated

35:30

driver He has thought the weight

35:32

of a whole nation on top of him and

35:34

he really does He feels that

35:36

pressure you can see it on a race weekend that

35:38

he does feel the pressure He feels the

35:40

need to deliver

35:42

and that pressure I think is counterproductive

35:45

and you do see some up-and-down weekends from

35:47

him So it's great to see a

35:49

consistent weekend from him one where he's able

35:52

to concentrate and deliver and and I

35:54

mean He really is the real thing when he gets

35:56

it, right and and Damon. What about his teammate

35:59

Daniel Ricardo back? for the first time in five

36:01

races? Yeah, I think I saw a quote

36:03

where he said, he hated to hear himself

36:05

say it, but he thought he was a little bit

36:08

race rusty, you know, not quite as

36:10

sharp as he needs, he knows he needs to be because

36:12

he's been away, and also his hand is recuperating

36:15

a little bit still. So yeah, it's good to see him

36:17

back in, and now we want to see him make

36:20

some progress, make the steps that we expect from Daniel,

36:22

but we've got a few more races

36:24

left. But going back to Yuki,

36:27

you know, again, I agree with him, he's a little

36:29

bit too hard on himself, his pace is there, his pace

36:32

is good, but it's that kind of suggestion

36:35

that he himself doesn't think he's good enough,

36:38

comes out sometimes, you know, that's how

36:40

it comes across, and I think that he, I

36:42

don't know how you change that attitude,

36:45

he's very open and honest about his failings,

36:47

and you want, you know, sometimes you want to go, look, I

36:49

don't think Fernando Alonso, even if he had any failings,

36:52

will be admitting to any of them, and sometimes

36:54

you do need to kind of just,

36:56

you know,

36:57

put a little bit of a protective ball around yourself,

36:59

rather than open yourself up to criticism. Well,

37:02

I do think the pressure on the drivers in the Red Bull

37:04

system, all the way up from the beginning, is

37:07

immense. The one person I think

37:09

is immune to it is Daniel. I did

37:11

see him in Nashville last week, he

37:13

was at an event that Red

37:15

Bull organized, and he was out there, and

37:17

he's smiling and waving and having a good time, and

37:20

he got phone calls from the team, asking him

37:22

about, okay, how's the hand? Because

37:24

he was driving a car and doing spins in

37:26

the middle of the bar district, and

37:28

he was down in Nashville, so he

37:30

was in good shape, but it's a huge

37:32

difference between doing a demo

37:34

run and spending a weekend

37:36

here out on the racetrack. The physical

37:39

demands on these drivers is

37:42

just unbelievable. Six lateral

37:44

Gs going around a corner, that's the equivalent

37:47

of a 90 pound head press, every

37:49

time you go into a corner, your neck is under that

37:52

much stress. So I think, you know, for all these

37:54

drivers, it's a lot of work, physically,

37:57

for Daniel,

37:58

you know,

37:58

being rusty is not... Not unusual.

38:03

When it comes to personal style, it's not just

38:05

about a signature look. You can build your

38:07

style piece by piece. With new colors,

38:09

fabrics, and styles, it's the perfect time

38:12

to add new layers with Indochino. From

38:36

especially now. Add layers to your fall

38:38

38:41

38:45

or more. We've

38:50

wandered down the aisle

38:53

of the Indochino store, and

38:55

we've got a few questions for you. We've wandered

38:57

down to the American team, and

39:00

Gunther Stein is with us now. Gunther,

39:03

there was so much excitement and expectation

39:06

around the upgrades that you guys brought to

39:08

this race. How do you sum it up? How has

39:11

the car performed? I think expectation,

39:13

you put it wrong. I always was very careful

39:16

with expectations. I never said it will be, we

39:18

need to find out how good it is, you know, and it's

39:20

a difficult weekend to find out, for obvious

39:22

reasons, a sprint weekend. Yesterday,

39:24

obviously, we were completely off on the sprint

39:27

race. We realized that when we were off with

39:29

the downforce level, so we decided

39:31

to make changes on the downforce level

39:33

and therefore start from pit lane, and

39:36

I'm very happy that we made that decision because

39:38

we learned a lot more now. It was not

39:40

fantastic, but we at least

39:42

raced some of the cars today. You know, I mean,

39:45

obviously, we didn't race the Red Bulls or the Mercedes, don't

39:47

worry. It's one of these things, I

39:49

think we made progress, but do I know where

39:51

it is? I don't know. What

39:54

the shortcoming of the car prior to this

39:56

weekend has always been in the race and tire wear.

39:58

Did you see improvements? with that. It

40:00

looks like it is improving and maybe we are a little bit

40:02

too careful, a little bit too cautious because

40:04

we always had these problems and we didn't, we

40:07

tried to save the tire too much, that was

40:09

Kevin Swirbik from the last set of tests that

40:12

I should have gone straight out, go for it

40:14

because I saved the tire and then at some

40:16

stage I just said oh I tried and all of

40:18

a sudden I had good grip you know and I enjoyed myself.

40:20

So maybe a little bit too careful but

40:23

we go now to Mexico and try to find out what

40:25

we can do there. Obviously they're down for level in Mexico,

40:28

how much he got is always too little

40:30

because of the altitude but you

40:33

know it's just one of those things here we need to keep on trying

40:35

and also to learn for next year. Okay now the cars

40:38

have what is it 150 sensors on them don't they

40:40

which are feeding data back to you guys

40:42

of course. But the best sensor in

40:44

the car as Damon has told us many times

40:46

is the driver and what were the drivers

40:49

saying about the car here? Damon

40:51

is biased anyway because he was a

40:53

driver so fair play. We've got someone

40:55

with a conflict of interest, I'm biased.

40:59

We've got anyone here who can ask. You are holding the

41:01

mic you know so the drivers

41:03

what they are saying is that what I just said

41:05

Kevin was they were all both a

41:07

little bit yeah we actually could race today you know

41:09

we could race the Alphas we could race the Williams you

41:11

know so which before they just don't

41:13

fire so you know everybody should

41:15

be careful with their prediction but as

41:18

I said we need to do one

41:21

or two more races to see what we have got actually.

41:23

A lot of people have mentioned crosswinds

41:26

and the fact these cars are affected quite

41:28

a lot it seems incredible with the amount

41:30

of downforce that they have but relatively

41:33

light winds that we've had today can affect

41:37

your cars too. Absolutely. Sometimes

41:39

the guys think something is broken the

41:41

suspension when they get their dust and as

41:43

you say the gas are not very

41:46

high wind but they are out of nothing they are very

41:48

strong you know they are pulsing so I

41:50

think it was mainly at the end of the lap 16 17

41:52

18 19 they were like because once I

41:55

said I think something is broke but you

41:57

look at the aerodata it is just gusts of wind you

41:59

know. I think everybody has experienced the same, but

42:02

they are just a ground effect.

42:04

They're just project cars for error. And a

42:06

sprint weekend, is it just an impossible

42:08

weekend to do development on? Yeah,

42:11

because you have got one session which will now, then you

42:13

have to freeze the car or it's going

42:16

in park for me. Otherwise you get cold to the stewards,

42:18

which we don't want to be. It's difficult, but

42:20

we knew that going in. It didn't come as a surprise,

42:22

but therefore we took the decision, even

42:25

we start from pit lane because yesterday,

42:27

the sprint race was just like we were

42:29

off the pace, completely and comparing also

42:31

our top speed compare. We were very fast on the

42:34

straight, but that means you're light

42:36

on air in the corners, which don't help the tires

42:38

and don't help your lap time. Okay, well, going

42:40

to the final one from us. You're the home team. How's

42:43

the support been out there for you? I mean, it's fantastic

42:45

here. I mean, people like it. And I

42:48

mean, the biggest thing is our fun now, has

42:51

reached America. This was not possible

42:53

six, seven years ago. I think

42:55

now it's here and it's here to stay. Thank

42:57

you very much. Thank you. Thank you. All right, great.

43:00

What a character he is. I can tell you, you do

43:02

not want to cross him in the stewards room,

43:05

but

43:06

Thursday, I'm thinking back to Monaco. I've had

43:08

it full bore from him in Monaco. I

43:10

was the steward there, but Thursday

43:12

on his own back, he went up to

43:15

meet all the Marshals. He spent

43:17

nearly an hour with the Marshals up there and

43:20

just absolutely wonderful signed autographs,

43:23

made jokes. He was just absolutely fantastic.

43:26

And the Marshals volunteer, they put

43:28

in their hard work. And it's

43:30

been quite a huge thing for

43:32

him to come out and see all those people.

43:35

Makes a big difference. I think he loves

43:37

racing. He's so passionate.

43:40

Yeah, I, you know, I don't think about it. I don't

43:42

get mad at him when he's swearing at me

43:44

and calling me all kinds of names in

43:46

the stewards room. I just have to remind

43:48

myself, it's all passion. I

43:51

actually came away from that conversation, feeling

43:53

a little bit more upbeat, because on paper,

43:56

those upgrades on the house

43:58

didn't look like they did much,

43:59

The drivers are obviously saying it's a little bit better

44:02

and they were racing cars that they haven't been

44:04

racing. So let's hope for them that

44:06

it has indeed been a step forward. Friend

44:09

of the show is just walk past this. Alex,

44:11

can we just talk about the performance of

44:14

Williams this weekend? Yeah, it's been

44:16

quite up and down for us. It's been very wind dependent,

44:19

very weather dependent as in track temp,

44:21

which is very normal for us. That's

44:23

kind of why you see these dips and downs

44:26

up and down through the weekend. The

44:28

problem for us is we put everything on Saturday.

44:31

So we put new tyres for the race.

44:33

We missed out by three tenths

44:35

with George and then we did

44:37

Sunday with new tyres. And when we were

44:39

kind of scrambling around a bit, it's actually

44:41

been quite interesting for us because we... The

44:44

more we drive our car, I know it sounds strange, we've

44:47

already had... I've had two years of driving

44:49

it now, but it's

44:51

amazing how the wind can really change

44:54

our car in low speed corners more than anything.

44:56

And just little subtleties like what happened

44:58

from Saturday to Sunday.

45:00

If it's going from north to

45:03

east, 45 degrees of wind.

45:04

What do you get, little snaps of oversteer? No, it's

45:07

more... Headwind.

45:09

Headwind is really good for our car in low speed corners.

45:12

So think about Zandvoort

45:14

and our performance there. It gives

45:16

us a car that doesn't have its

45:17

normal limitations and

45:20

then we can go much quicker. Was this quite an easy

45:22

weekend for you? You know, you've got the American

45:24

team. He takes all

45:26

the workload off you with the fans and the sponsors.

45:29

You've just been hanging out on sick

45:31

streets, eating steak, having a great

45:34

time. Even if I did half of what Logan did, I

45:36

still do a lot. We do

45:38

a lot of PR around here. Yeah, we did

45:40

Team BBQ on Thursday. We were

45:42

doing an event tonight

45:44

as well after the race. Well, look, have

45:47

fun tonight, whatever you're getting up to. Travel safe and

45:49

we'll see you in make safe. I sound exciting, but I'm a boring person.

45:51

I'll be in bed at 10pm. Actually, no

45:53

one listening is believing that. Alex,

45:55

travel safe. Thank you for your time. Talk

45:57

about somebody, though, who deserves to be in Formula

45:59

One. I mean he has done so well

46:02

with this car and he's always always always

46:04

up up in the order and exciting to

46:06

watch he's such a

46:09

Wonderful wonderful person

46:11

to deal with on one-on-one. I

46:13

think Tim also he's very much appreciated

46:16

by the team the team know he's valuable to them

46:18

and He can give the

46:21

team some sort of loadstone some

46:23

sort of you know something they know is going to be consistent

46:25

and if they can just give him the competitive car then he'll be right

46:27

up the Front and and as we were talking about

46:30

before he's confident enough He knows he knows his

46:32

own ability and he'd be out there to

46:34

live at the front as well So he's just a matter of

46:36

time. Hopefully we'll see Alex up there and

46:38

Williams as well I think for the history

46:40

of the sport to see Williams Sort

46:43

of resurgent with with the new investment

46:45

that they have new management that they

46:47

have and drivers that really Can give

46:49

the team confidence that the car is going

46:52

in the right direction makes a big difference Helps

46:55

us I think I you know for those of us

46:57

who love the sport as I know

46:59

you do Tom I think it's just

47:01

a great thing to have Williams just

47:05

Sneaking up the order just a little bit there. I

47:07

can see Valtteri Bottas

47:09

a slightly

47:09

more difficult weekend for you guys

47:11

after what had been a brilliant one Last

47:14

time out just sum it up for us difficult is

47:16

the right word for this weekend. I think Ultimately

47:20

lacking pace I think that got confirmed yesterday

47:22

in the sprint and today in the race

47:24

just didn't have the pace to make any progress

47:26

and It's hard like

47:29

it's tough because in Qatar we had both cars in the in

47:31

the points. So

47:32

definitely some things to understand initially,

47:35

I feel like we probably got more penalized by

47:37

the Track being

47:39

quite bumpy and maybe our cars

47:42

quite sensitive to the right height, you know So that's

47:44

the initial feeling of mine about tree How difficult

47:47

is it to catch up on a sprint weekend

47:49

when you've got all these different sessions and races

47:51

and qualifying? If you haven't started the

47:53

weekend off, right? It's tricky if you

47:55

only have one practice and you don't get always

47:58

true picture where you are in that practice

47:59

this and then you're stuck with a setup

48:02

so yeah we saw today sometimes

48:04

made big chances of that start from the

48:06

pitlane so i'm

48:08

in hindsight after the race i wish

48:10

we would have done the same butts out of as

48:12

they were in a decent place on the great so he

48:14

didn't want to do that maybe you always go well in

48:16

mexico semester not next weekend

48:19

thank you i'll of mexico so i'm there

48:21

for the tackles may

48:22

be tequila and some points baby

48:24

thanks travel i thank you so

48:29

49:57

49:59

allies 9th and Alpha

50:01

Towery 10th. So

50:04

Max Verstappen and Red Bull are the

50:06

world champions in Formula One, but

50:09

we had a very exciting addition

50:12

to the F1 calendar this weekend here

50:14

in Austin with the final

50:16

round of F1 Academy.

50:18

Being here, it was being televised in 180 countries

50:22

and we

50:23

had a new champion,

50:25

the inaugural F1

50:27

Academy champion, Marta Garcia.

50:30

Out of the final corner, first to the

50:32

floor, the Marta Garcia

50:34

who wins race one

50:35

in F1 Academy and

50:37

in doing so becomes the first

50:40

champion of F1 Academy,

50:42

your 2020 driver's champion. The

50:46

team's third rate, they knew it was coming.

50:49

It's been a gorgeous year for the F1 drivers

50:51

around in Formula One, there is talent and a

50:54

short throttle and we've seen Esteban

50:56

off-con as well in qualifying, but

50:58

what a result for Marta Garcia.

51:03

Marta, what a season it has

51:06

been for you. What

51:08

does this title mean?

51:09

It means a lot. It means a lot of course.

51:13

We've been working so hard since we started

51:15

the season with the team, with Fremont, in

51:17

the same hour of track physically

51:20

everywhere. We have some tough months

51:22

as well, racing a lot since

51:25

May until July and it's great

51:28

to win a championship of course, all the hard work

51:30

we've been doing. Also not just this year, but also

51:32

the years before. It just

51:35

feels really, really good. I was really emotional

51:37

just today when I won and just

51:39

really, really happy. Tell us a little bit

51:41

more about the cars in terms

51:44

of their speed and what you've learnt from them this

51:46

year.

51:46

Basically it's an F4 car, has 170 horsepower, and doesn't have

51:48

much downforce honestly. We

51:56

run with Pirelli tires and basically

51:58

the car doesn't have much downforce. a lot of

52:00

downforce like the F1 cars obviously,

52:03

but it's good you know it's good for experiencing single

52:06

teaters for the first time you know for the young

52:08

girls that come into single teaters and

52:10

also to learn is really good for.

52:12

And there's been such a buzz in

52:15

the Austin paddock following F1

52:17

academy and I think Lewis came down to see you guys

52:19

was George Russell giving the trophies away as well?

52:21

Yeah it was right you

52:24

know when I won the race yesterday Lewis was

52:27

waiting for me to congratulate me and it was

52:29

just great you know like Lewis has been and

52:31

he's one of my favorites there in F1 since like four

52:34

or five years ago so you know how

52:36

that feels and also Russell

52:38

was also giving the trophies yesterday so it's

52:41

great to see the F1 drivers was supporting

52:43

the F1 academy and talking about

52:45

it you know like giving it visibility

52:48

it's just really good. So what happens next

52:50

because the champion can't

52:52

return to F1 academy so

52:55

what are your plans going forward? I

52:56

mean I know F1 academy is going to help me

52:58

to move forward to move to a higher category

53:00

that's for sure but we don't know we

53:03

don't know anything yet so I guess you know something

53:05

probably in the next few weeks.

53:06

Okay and the goal is

53:09

Formula One obviously?

53:10

Obviously yeah the goal is always being Formula

53:12

One I think now I'm closer in

53:14

the terms that I just won a championship from F1 academy

53:18

I might move up and I think

53:20

now I just need to work hard sacrifice a lot

53:23

and just keep working working working until

53:25

probably one day I hope I could get to

53:27

F1. And is there a

53:29

real buzz about your achievement back home

53:31

in Spain? Can you see a lot of support

53:33

coming your way? Yeah

53:34

there is a lot of support I think

53:36

every time more because right now

53:38

obviously the races are being broadcasted

53:40

for these Austin race before they

53:43

were not it's giving a lot more visibility

53:45

and I'm getting a lot more comments

53:47

on Instagram like you know a lot of messages

53:50

you know also doing

53:52

so many stuff with Carlos as well helps a lot

53:55

and I know people in Spain supports me supports

53:57

me a lot and they love

53:58

to see a Spanish person. doing well in

54:01

motorsport because they love motorsport out there.

54:02

Spanish motorsport is in a great place isn't

54:05

it? Fernando Alonso, Carlos Sainz, you,

54:07

it's

54:08

it's really good, it's really good yeah

54:10

also not just not just racing

54:12

like cars but also motorbikes we have

54:14

a lot of drivers so yeah there is a lot of people

54:17

in Spain that have passion for motorsport

54:19

and it is really

54:20

great. Well Marta many congratulations

54:23

on everything you've achieved this year and

54:25

best of luck for the future.

54:26

Thank you so much.

54:31

Tim there's no doubt that Marta has done

54:33

a fantastic job this year with seven

54:36

wins but let's talk about F1 Academy

54:38

and its addition to the F1

54:40

program. Well I think it's pitched at just

54:42

the right level because women don't

54:45

need a leg up at the top they

54:47

need to leg up at the bottom we need

54:49

to build the pyramid from the bottom up and

54:51

I think that's what F1 Academy

54:53

does it gives the opportunity for people

54:56

in the F4 car level rather

54:58

than trying to pitch it look you know a little too high

55:00

we have Lynn St. James here who's the

55:03

FIA representative for the Women

55:06

in Motorsport Commission for the US

55:08

and her thing is we're not trying to get

55:11

something that we're not not deserving of

55:13

what we need is just that initial door

55:16

opens and I think it's great that's what

55:18

this program does I think

55:20

Susie Wolf has done an amazing job the

55:23

cars look tidy the teams look tidy

55:26

and the racing here this weekend was really

55:28

really good. I watched it from the center of the

55:30

track I watched one of the races anyway it would look

55:32

no different to watching young

55:34

you know aspiring racing

55:37

drivers as you would expect so I think

55:39

it's given an opportunity to the drivers

55:41

to be noticed to

55:43

get attention because you need to

55:45

get them it's no good them getting

55:47

talent or getting race results and

55:49

having talent they can't take that to the next level they

55:52

need to find marketing opportunities

55:54

and budgets like we'd like all racing drivers

55:57

do they need to have the money to go racing so it needs

56:00

to look at it and go, this person talented,

56:02

this person's got a future, this person's worth

56:05

investing in. And so it's given all

56:07

those opportunities, I think, for young

56:10

female talent to shine and show

56:12

what they've got. Yeah, all of

56:14

the top level managers are here in the paddock

56:16

and they talent pick from

56:19

F2, F3, and

56:21

now they're going to be able to talent pick from

56:23

this F1 Academy. I think it makes a huge

56:26

difference to be able to be spotted and have somebody

56:28

mentor you up through the ranks, I mean, because

56:31

the budgets to get to F2, F3

56:33

are just enormous and you need somebody

56:35

to give you that leg up. And

56:37

the women competing in F1 Academy next

56:39

year are going to have an even better platform

56:42

because every Formula One team is

56:44

going to have an association with cars in

56:46

F1 Academy. They've just announced the calendar

56:49

for 2024, seven races included. I know

56:51

they're going to be in Miami, they're going to be back here in Austin

56:53

as well. So it is going to grow, it's

56:55

great exposure and it's a great first

56:58

step. They're very, very well organized.

57:00

They've come in, they've put this program

57:02

together in a very thoughtful way. So

57:04

they've got very experienced people managing

57:07

the program. And I think, you

57:09

know, Stefano and all the people at F1

57:11

have put a lot of time and effort into

57:13

making sure that this is a sustainable program.

57:16

It's going to be years before we really get

57:18

people floating up through the system, but

57:21

it doesn't happen if you don't start. Okay

57:23

guys, well, it's been a weekend.

57:25

It's certainly been a weekend. Formula

57:28

One in Texas is, well, it's

57:30

big. I did go and see Queen last night. One

57:32

of the things they do here at Kota is put on fantastic

57:35

music every year. One of the things

57:38

that's really changed about the experience of

57:40

coming to a Formula One race is just how much extra

57:42

entertainment there is at all of these venues.

57:45

I think the promoters are doing a really

57:47

great job of entertaining the fans when

57:49

they come here. There's things to do, things

57:51

to see. The drivers are going out into

57:54

the fan areas and they're doing

57:56

interviews and all kinds of things on stage.

57:58

I mean, they do such a good job. uh... all

58:00

these drivers that so personable and

58:03

they really love the fans to come here

58:05

i mean i've come here this week and i'm not working but i'm

58:08

loving it like honestly of love just being

58:10

a punter of love this being a person wondering

58:12

around and soaking it all up and enjoying watching

58:14

the cars and and listen to people and the

58:16

uh... it's it's just is so much to

58:19

it but having the promoters done an amazing

58:21

job with the atmosphere this weekend it is

58:23

just been electric all around hundreds

58:25

of thousands of people and looking up

58:28

into turn one at that hill at the start is

58:30

on believable well tim tell

58:33

us not only are you a steward

58:35

but you also uh... work with the organization

58:38

of this race how big formal

58:41

one in the united states in the minute is is is the

58:44

growth still vertical as it has

58:46

been well my job is to organize all

58:48

of the officials and and for

58:50

the very first time we've had absolutely

58:53

no difficulty recruiting the thousand-plus

58:56

people that we need to stand around the racetrack

58:58

and do this and i think it continues

59:00

to grow i mean i think we're

59:02

in a very strong position here three

59:05

formal one races it's a lot of work for

59:07

for me in all the race people to work

59:09

with us but i think that these races

59:12

are exciting

59:13

the promoters are are really invested in

59:15

growing the sport so

59:17

i think it's good as good for one in this

59:19

good for the sport in the u.s. i'm very

59:21

excited though for motor racing

59:23

in the u.s. because it i think all of the

59:25

championships here are growing

59:27

alongside of of formal one

59:30

so it's good for all of us just what we're talking

59:32

about f one in in the u.s.

59:34

uh... you went to vegas recently of

59:36

course that is the penultimate race this year

59:39

uh... what did you find what can we expect well

59:41

first of all it is just an unbelievably

59:44

huge venue and and to

59:46

be in the middle of las vegas is extremely exciting

59:49

there are twenty eight thousand hotel rooms

59:52

inside the track in another twenty

59:54

some odd thousand hotel rooms around the outside

59:56

but to walk down uh... the boulevard

59:59

there and to see the lights and

1:00:01

to see the excitement and everything being built.

1:00:03

They're building grandstands in the Bellagio Fountain,

1:00:06

which is just amazing to me. It's

1:00:09

gonna be- How does that work? Yes,

1:00:11

you do. No, I, no. They steer those,

1:00:14

the fountain, which is quite interesting. You can watch

1:00:16

it swishing around. It's, it's

1:00:18

gonna be a huge, huge event.

1:00:21

The facility itself is absolutely

1:00:24

mega. And so I think that

1:00:26

we're gonna have a great time. Let's

1:00:31

check in with our F1 fantasy team

1:00:33

now, F1 Nation Racing. Sadly,

1:00:36

with just 118 points, we've

1:00:38

had our worst weekend of the season so far,

1:00:41

thanks to Lewis Hamilton's disqualification,

1:00:43

Oscar Piastri's DNF, and Daniel

1:00:45

Ricciardo's P15. Perhaps we

1:00:47

jinxed Hamilton. That's two races in

1:00:49

a row without points since we brought

1:00:52

him into our team. But we're

1:00:54

gonna stick with the seven-time world champion and

1:00:56

hope it's third time lucky in Mexico.

1:00:58

At the front, TJGP67

1:01:01

continues to lead the way in the F1

1:01:03

Nation World Championship, 21 points

1:01:06

ahead of MLN Racing in P2, while

1:01:08

BlankBGP is back up into the podium

1:01:10

positions, albeit by just two

1:01:12

points. And remember that F1 Fantasy

1:01:15

is completely free to play, and you can join

1:01:17

our league at any time. Just go to fantasy.formula1.com

1:01:21

and search for the F1 Nation World

1:01:23

Championship. And remember, you have until

1:01:25

the start of qualifying for the Mexico City

1:01:27

Grand Prix on Saturday to make changes

1:01:30

to your team.

1:01:33

All right, guys, thank you so much for

1:01:36

your time, both of you. Tim, thank you very much for

1:01:38

coming on the show. Great. And thank

1:01:40

you to you at home for listening. The show would

1:01:43

be nothing without you, but we're

1:01:45

gonna call it a day. We will, of course, be back

1:01:48

next Monday with our review of the Mexican

1:01:50

Grand Prix, but for now, F1 Nation

1:01:53

is produced by Formula One and Audioboom

1:01:55

Studios.
