Hey all, it's Danny here. I've
0:22
been hard at work getting season three ready
0:24
for you. That's going to launch on Thursday,
0:27
February six, not too much
0:29
longer to wait. In the meantime,
0:32
it's been amazing to see so many
0:34
family secrets pouring in through the special
0:36
line we set up to record your
0:38
stories. One Secret
0:41
zero do keep it up. We
0:43
love listening. But today
0:46
I thought i'd share with you some of what I'm continuing
0:49
to hear and see as I travel
0:51
the country from my book and for this podcast.
0:54
You guys, it's epidemic.
0:57
I truly believe we're living in the era
0:59
of the end of the secret, and
1:01
so many of those secrets that are coming to light are
1:04
family secrets. I
1:07
see you when I'm doing an event from
1:09
the stage. I notice your faces
1:11
in the crowd. You the young
1:13
woman with the direct gaze who radiates
1:15
intensity. You're almost
1:17
always someone who has just discovered
1:19
a big DNA surprise, a
1:22
late discovery adoptee, someone
1:24
who is donor conceived. Whatever
1:26
it is, the intensity, the
1:28
aliveness, the hunger is
1:31
unmistakable. You the
1:33
couple holding hands tightly, who look
1:36
frightened, confused, sometimes upset.
1:39
You believed you were doing the right thing all
1:41
these years, not telling your children
1:43
the truth of their genetic identity.
1:46
But now you're realizing that it isn't possible
1:48
to keep that secret anymore, at
1:50
least not for certain. So
1:53
now what do you do. There
1:55
are men who have just discovered kids they didn't
1:57
know they had, women who
1:59
put up a child for adoption when they were teenagers
2:02
and never told a soul. Adult
2:05
adoptees finding their birth mothers,
2:07
sometimes with just a few key strokes.
2:11
So many family secrets each
2:14
year, the number just increases.
2:17
A lot of that is due to DNA testing
2:20
and how popular it's become. A
2:22
lot of it is due to the Internet and how connected
2:25
we all are. Lies and
2:27
secrets become harder and harder to keep.
2:30
The Me Too movement has eradicated another
2:33
kind of secret, a cultural
2:35
shift towards connection, community
2:38
gathering, truth telling, the
2:41
beginning of an understanding that the shame
2:43
that thrumbs like a drumbeat under
2:46
all these secrets is just
2:48
a story. We're telling ourselves,
2:51
here's what I'm seeing. Sometimes
2:54
it's hard to tell the truth, and
2:57
sometimes it's hard to hear it, but
3:00
it is always better for us.
3:03
It may not feel that way, not at first,
3:05
not always, but in all
3:07
of my conversations for Family Secrets,
3:10
at the end, I asked my guests if
3:12
they wished they hadn't discovered what they had,
3:15
and not one of them has
3:17
said yes, that they wished they had remained
3:20
in the dark. Because when
3:22
we know what's been hidden in the shadows, it's
3:25
like the lights blink on. We
3:27
understand more about ourselves and where
3:29
we come from, what built us, what
3:31
makes us who we are. There's
3:35
tremendous liberation in that. There's
3:37
freedom, there's beauty,
3:39
there's grace, which is why
3:42
I keep having these conversations and
3:44
why I love connecting with all of
3:46
you. Next
3:49
week, we'll be back with more of your Family Secrets,
3:52
and remember that on February six, our
3:54
third season will drop. I can't
3:56
wait to share these extraordinary guests
3:59
and their journey. He's with you. For
