Family Secrets is a production of I Heart
0:02
Radio. I'm
0:11
Danny Shapiro, and this is family
0:13
Secrets, the secrets that are kept
0:16
from us, the secrets we keep from
0:18
others, and the secrets we keep
0:20
from ourselves. I've
0:22
heard from so many about your own
0:24
family secrets and realize that what
0:27
we are creating for each other on this podcast
0:29
is a community, a community for
0:32
those who are looking for a safe and supportive
0:34
space to unburden themselves. To
0:37
that end, we've created a number for listeners
0:39
to call in to record stories
0:41
to share here in this space.
0:44
This week, I'd like to share a few
0:46
of those stories from our community. Thanks
0:49
for listening, Hi,
0:51
I just wanted to share a little bit about my
0:53
family secret UM. I was
0:56
raised by my mom and did not
0:58
know my father, and a
1:01
about a year ago, I chose to
1:03
do UM a DNA test
1:05
and connected with my
1:08
father's first cousin. We
1:10
eventually found out UM and
1:12
I did end up contacting my father
1:15
UM. It took about three contacts and
1:18
it took about four months for him to
1:20
find me get back with me because
1:22
he did not believe that I was his daughter.
1:25
So we did meet and we did a
1:28
DNA test and of course
1:30
it showed that he was my father, and
1:32
since then it became
1:34
a very rocky road. Um. He
1:37
it turns out, is
1:40
a member of the Catholic
1:42
Church, and um
1:44
is a Catholic deacon, and he very
1:47
much did not want this to become public
1:49
knowledge, even though I was conceived
1:51
prior to him becoming a deacon
1:54
and prior to his marriage to his wife. Currently,
1:57
so I
2:00
was told to
2:02
refrain from telling anybody,
2:04
and um he made it known that I
2:07
was not to contact any other members of his
2:09
family. UM. So she
2:14
stated that he did want a relationship
2:16
with me, but that
2:21
relationship with me was a monthly
2:24
lunch meeting. So I
2:28
chose eventually to cut the relationship
2:30
off because it just
2:33
wasn't healthy. Um. But I
2:35
am the secret, and I
2:37
have two sisters that will never know me,
2:39
and grandmother and aunt out
2:41
there that will never know me. And that's
2:44
my secret. My
2:47
secret is actually my grandma's
2:49
secret. She died a couple
2:51
of months ago, and um,
2:54
it was a very uh traumatic
2:57
thing, I think for myself mostly.
3:00
Uh. She was the heart
3:03
surgery. She was
3:05
left on bypass. Her chest
3:07
opened for a few days, and she was
3:11
awake and aware for
3:13
some of it and able
3:15
to write me notes. UM.
3:20
It was obviously a painful death for me and my
3:22
family, But we found out from her sister
3:24
and her best friend afterwards that
3:27
my grandma had actually known two years prior
3:30
that she needed to get the surgery.
3:32
But at that same point in time, she
3:35
had found out that her husband
3:37
was secretly UH
3:40
spent all their money and
3:42
had racked up a lot
3:44
a lot of money in debt, and she felt
3:47
she couldn't afford surgery,
3:50
and none of us have confronted
3:52
him to tell him that we know what was going on
3:54
there. And she
3:58
decided to clean houses for
4:00
the last two years and make as much
4:02
money as she could because she
4:05
wanted to get out of that debt that
4:08
caused, and she kind of worked herself
4:10
to death. Her heart couldn't handle the
4:13
stress of working and
4:16
UH when it already needed help.
4:18
And so we feel
4:20
a little I feel a little bit like he caused
4:22
her death. But I still get on the
4:25
phone with him and talk to him and
4:28
and say things like I
4:30
love you. And it's
4:32
really hard to reconcile, um,
4:35
feeling like someone caused something and not
4:37
being able to really say
4:40
anything to them about it, and to
4:43
know that she was holding onto
4:45
a lot of things that she never wanted
4:47
to tell us out of out of shame
4:50
or anything else. And
4:52
Uh, I'm really glad my aunt
4:55
broke the secret. I guess. So
4:58
that's my secret, thanks. Yeah. My
5:02
secret is one that I've held for a
5:05
very long time. When
5:07
I was seven years old and living
5:10
in public housing in New Orleans,
5:13
I was molested by one
5:15
of my neighbors and
5:18
I never spoke a word of it too
5:22
my parents or even my siblings,
5:25
just because I
5:28
I didn't think that they would be able to handle
5:30
it. Um. I wasn't sure
5:33
how they would react, and I
5:36
felt like I would have let them down for not
5:38
being strong enough and
5:40
being able to fight back. So
5:43
I held on to the secret for a very
5:46
very long time. It wasn't until
5:48
I was twenty three and I
5:51
spoke to one of my very close friends about
5:53
it after the topic
5:55
came up and speaking
5:58
about it for the first time in still
6:00
when he is, I
6:03
just broke down and I could barely
6:06
talk about it. But
6:08
after that instant, I started
6:11
to open up more. I opened
6:13
up and told my fiance in an incident, but
6:16
until this day, I still have not told
6:18
even one of my parents, are any of my siblings
6:21
or any of my real close family, because
6:24
I'm still not sure how
6:27
to tell them this news, how to tell
6:30
them what happened so long ago, and
6:33
even why I helped it for so
6:35
long. But as
6:38
each day goes by and as I
6:40
open up more and more, things
6:43
do get a little easier. So
6:46
that's my family's secret, and I'm
6:49
not sure how long it will stay a secret, but hearing
6:52
everyone else open up has
6:55
kind of inspired me. Maybe
6:57
I should open up. Maybe I'll help incipate.
7:01
