As a scriptwriter, I've always loved stories of the underdog hero. The biblical story of Gideon is one of these: the guy everyone thinks is least likely to succeed, and who surprises everyone, not least himself, by stepping up to the plate. 

It's a story of a man struggling with low self-esteem, doubt and fear, who gradually finds the courage to embrace his destiny as the Deliverer of an oppressed people. 

The saying 'to put down a fleece' refers to someone who is so unsure of themselves that they constantly have to ask for confirmation that they are, in fact, up to the task. It comes from the story of Gideon, as told in the book of Judges in the Old Testament of the Bible.
