Marianne Wilkinson was born in Ottawa, Canada and graduated with an honours degree in Geography. Afterwards, she became a high school geography and urban studies teacher. In 1968, her and her family had moved to a small community called Kanata and that was when she was asked to join the community association. She has had over 50 years of involvement in caring and serving for her community, with roles from running the township council, town/city planning and overseeing transportation. She has served on the municipal councils in the City of Kanata and City of Ottawa for 29 years.  It included 9 years as head of Council (Reeve and Mayor) and serving positions, including President, on the Association of Municipalities of Ontario. She has also served locally, provincially and nationally on a number of women’s organizations, ran workshops for women and helped to start many community organizations – and still does.  At 83 she’s as involved as ever because her caring for the community remains strong,  She has had many awards, the most recent was the naming of a bridge over the trans-Canada highway as the Marianne Wilkinson Bridge.  She also continues to be a guest speaker on community building and the importance of being a volunteer.
