I have been a fan of Britney Spears since I was a kid, but as I became an adult I have become protective of her almost like a brother would. I believe most fans that grew up with her feel this way… We have been vocal advocating for her rights for years, and I am so glad that media is catching onto the Free Britney movement.

FRAMING BRITNEY SPEARS is a documentary by the New York Times that doesn’t give any new information to Britney stans but brings the general public up to speed on the pop’s stars controversial conservatorship status. In this episode we fill in some of the gaps that the documentary didn’t cover. Britney Spears has been in a personal & financial conservatorship for over 13 years. The type of conservatorship Britney is in is specifically designed for people with mental handicaps that cannot effectively manage their personal lives or finances.

When someone is placed under a conservatorship, their rights are essentially stripped, and the conservatee is legally in charge of their lives. Britney’s father, James Spears, has been fighting Britney in court for years to remain in control of her life. Despite her own wishes and going on the record stating that she is afraid of her father and refuses to work until he is no longer her conservator, Britney Spears has been unable to take control of her own life. Conservatorships, by default, are extremely difficult to remove once when put in place.

The problem with Britney’s case is, the very argument her father is using to keep her in this conservatorship does not reflect the actions we see of Britney. Regardless of how or why the conservatorship was put in place, it was supposed to be temporary, and Britney has been working and making money for everyone involved in the CONservatorship, while not making decisions about her own life.

Since her conservatorship was put into place, Britney Spears has worked nonstop. She’s released 3 albums, two world tours, an extended Las Vegas residency, and hosted the X Factor for a season. For someone that is able to do so much, her fans are left wondering WHY is a woman whom is nearly 40 and  capable enough to work and handle the demands of being a pop star is she still being controlled by her father?  Britney Spears deserves to live her life autonomously.
