Julie interviews Karen McCann, a scoliosis survivor who had her initial surgical correction for scoliosis in 1984 with Harrington Rod instrumentation. 15 years later Karen developed a constellation of symptoms known as "flat back syndrome", and had a revision surgery performed with Dr Geck in Austin Texas. Karen describes her journey from her initial diagnosis/surgery to a life of severe pain and structural spinal instability by age 30. Fourteen years later, after exhaustive conservative treatment, Karen describes the difficult decision to have her spinal fusion and instrumentation redone and the importance of choosing one of the approximately 30 specialists in the country to do the complicated surgery.
