Queen Vashti was the wife Xerxes, king of the Persian empire from 486 BC to 465 BC. Although she likely had many talents, King Xerxes seemed to treat her as if her only quality was her beauty. When Vashti was summoned by Xerxes so that he could parade her in front of his nobles she refused to be treated like an object to be put on display and declined to appear before the king. The consequences for her were severe.
