When my youngest child, Lillian, was in third grade, she wanted to shave her head. Her father and I, unsure of her motivation and sure that she would immediately regret it, didn't let her. Turns out, we should have. A few years later Lillian started dyeing her hair, and these days everyone knows her as the kid with the cool hair. When I think of someone who is on the fringe, who is not afraid to do things differently, I think of her.
