Meet today’s guest Alex Mcbrairty of A-Team Fitness
He is a certified sports medicine trainer and has a degree in psychology. Alex was able to combine both of his education paths to become personal trainer that changes peoples lives.

In addition to just holding certifications and a degree, Alex also enjoys being a fitness writer and doing public speaking. He loves keeping up with the industry and sharing his knowledge so that more people can benefit. But, Alex did not live his entire life as a fit guy, the reason Alex is so motivated to help others is because he himself struggled with obesity. This is how he can relate to his clients, and his clients have a stronger connection with him.

“I didn’t want to sit on the sidelines of life” –  Alex

Alex has had his own personal weight loss journey which is why he is so passionate about wanting to help others get fit. Even as a young boy, he felt embarrassed in front of his classmates because he was the heaviest kid in the class. Alex talks about different things he would experiment with in his early teen years to try to lose weight and the struggles he had. He tells us a cute story about how he finally lost the weight because he was trying to impress a girl, and it actually worked for him.

Alex lost over 80lbs with diet and exercise.

Food Tracking

Alex and I are a big believer in food tracking for weightloss. It is a hard habit to form, but when you discipline yourself to do it you get a lot of positive results. Having good healthy eating habits will really improve your health and lifestyle. The more we build this routine the easier it gets.

He says we make over 200 food choices a day, and if we are not monitoring ourselves we can be mindlessly eating. Food tracking is a necessity and you can use tools such as MyFitnessPal to track, or simply write down what you ate in a notebook.

Advice for food tracking

1. Don’t eat in front of the TV:
Eating in front of the TV is a distraction. You are not fully enjoying the food you are eating because your mind is fixated on the show you are watching. You will finish your food and still be left feeling hungry, which will cause you to reach for more snacks and pack on extra calories.

2. Log food before you eat it:
Sometimes you eat things when you get the munchies, then you forget about it. OR if you remember and track it later you are more likely to exceed your calorie intake for the day. Tracking food before you eat it can help you make a better decision to eat that item, especialy if you did not plan on it in advance.

3. Look at the Serving Size:
Serving sizes can be sneaky. Alex gives a great example of a bottle of soda, you might automatically think the 20oz is one serving but if you take a closer look at the label it is actually 2.5 servings. Proper food tracking will solve these problems, and save you a lot of calories.

Food Photos

If you are in a hurry you can take a photo of your dish for food tracking later. This can be very helpful because you can see the actual serving size. Some food tracking tools have this feature built right in.

Buy A Food Scale

Alex recommended that a food scale can make a big difference for you when logging your portions. Sometimes when we eyeball it we might be under-estimating or over-estimating. Having a food scale will help you get the most accurate entries.

Build A Routine

Food tracking is not easy, you have to gradually work up to doing it full time. Start out by logging a few days a week and then add on from there. The more you do it, the easier it becomes.
