Having spoken with Dr George Bingham for the previous episode, I didn't think it got much tougher in terms of the fight against Covid-19, than to be one of the doctors or nurses in the ICU, caring for patients as so many of them come to the ends of their lives.
In this episode, however, Gigi Cardozo, a young paramedic working for the London Ambulance Service, sheds light on the incredible burden that those working at the beginning of a Covid patient's journey also bear. Gigi describes the near-impossible decision faced on a daily basis of whether to admit someone or leave them at home, as well as the responsibility she feels to encourage family members to say their difficult goodbyes, all the while dealing with PPE aprons blowing into her face, and a 27 page document of advice that is updated daily.
Our conversation took place on Saturday the 2nd May, after a series of night shifts.
