The key to resilience is to acknowledge the hardship but to not allow it to sour or dominate your mindset and perspective. Born, raised, and living until 26 in a tenement on the Lower East Side, Sherwood’s life from an outside perspective would be characterized by poverty, oppression, struggle, and hardship. Despite these evident difficulties in Sherwood’s youth, he did not dwell on them at all, rather he acknowledged them and used them to further inspire his dreams of success and efforts to achieve those dreams. Despite his resilience and diligence, with a very balanced and mature perspective, Sherwood even at a young age was able to grasp that not everyone could simply exert effort and become successful and even to this day attributes his success to luck and God. This humility was key in imbuing him with the sense to be resilient in the face of oppression and poverty in order to one day be able to help those whose resilience was justifiably lacking. Sherwood’s art is emblematic of this nuanced understanding and living of resilience. Despite his lack of any artistic education, Sherwood’s natural talent, persistence, and creativity have allowed him to develop a unique and enamoring style of his own. Through the vibrant colors and three-dimensional style, Sherwood utilizes the unique characteristics of oil paint to portray a break from traditional art forms and the chaotic beauty of the battle between resilience and oppression.
