RCADE RADIO? WHY BOTHER?I'm positive Adam Kooyer has heard this question a time or two in his life. Adam, along with co-host Mark Shields have produced the RCADE RADIO podcast about 3-4 times a month since 2016. Yes, as the name may give it away, this podcast is primarily focused on the arcade industry. Okay, we all know that it hasn't looked good for arcades in the past 15 plus years, but even with the giants of yesterday releasing almost nothing, it stubbornly holds on. I dare call it a resurgence! ...A small resurgence. HERE'S A PARTY HATSo, it's almost a party again. But why is that? In my opinion, it has to do with three main things. The first being the incredible nostalgia that so many feel towards these games. The pull for another experience like the one when you walked into your first arcade is astoundingly powerful. And the hardcore gamers? Well, number two concerns restoration and preservation of these decades old diode infested beauties. The fans have taken it upon themselves to care for them and these collections often lead to "new-retro" barcades and indie arcades that are springing up all over the United States. The final reason for this is the creative accessibility that living in 2018 affords us. There are now many indie arcade developers taking the matter into their own hands designing and making their own games. During the arcade boom, you would never see a homebrew arcade game, but now powerhouses like Killer Queen are huge hits all over the country.RCADE RADIO SPIKES THE PUNCHBack to the show itself. Adam and Mark have been consistently chugging along and pushing out quality content with RCADE RADIO. Adam tells me about how they've kept the show fresh since our interview last year by adding segments like "What's in the Juke?", a Name That Tune-esqe quiz for live listeners and on-the-roaders alike. That type of evolution is important and vital to any show, but by far the greatest strength these guys bring to the table is the interviews they conduct. They've brought in big names like Walter Day AND Steve Wiebe of King of Kong fame. But they are all about celebrating the underground heroes too. Interviews with Dan Loosen (Midwest Gaming Classic), and the developers of COSMOTRONS show that what they do exemplifies having fun and having integrity.
