This is the Weekly Scramble,
0:06
a place where we chat about life over
0:09
a cold one or two. It's
0:12
time to belly up to the pod with
0:14
Mike Fradlone and your host, Chris Revers.
0:17
Yes, sir. It's time for the Weekly
0:19
Scramble. My name is Chris Revers. By
0:21
my side, his name is Mike Fradlone
0:23
with Fradlone's Hardware and Garden Store. Hello,
0:26
Michael. How you doing, Revers? I'm
0:28
good. In my disclosure, we did have a show
0:30
last week that you and I had previously recorded,
0:32
so we were both out of town on vacation with
0:34
our families over the week. So,
0:38
I got to tell you something. You
0:40
were right. I
0:43
think I'm right about a lot of things,
0:45
but what was I specifically right about this
0:47
thing? Well, okay. So, I have always contended
0:49
that I like to travel a certain way
0:51
because I like seeing the country.
0:54
Americana. Being on the open road with
0:57
nothing but time to kill. I do
0:59
enjoy it. To
1:01
a certain extent. So, the drive was
1:03
taxing, is what you're saying? Well, the
1:06
drive down, for the first time, I
1:08
was accompanied by my beautiful wife and
1:10
my sons. Awesome. First
1:12
time. We've ever done it that way. It was because the
1:14
boys had always wanted a road trip with me. That
1:17
went great. We did GarageLogic on
1:19
Friday afternoon. I hightailed at
1:21
home, picked them up, and we hit the road. We
1:24
got all the way down to Topeka,
1:26
Kansas. A couple
1:29
of quick stories. My wife is
1:31
really, really bad at booking hotels. Okay.
1:34
Things like that. It's because it's
1:36
not that she's deliberately trying to find somewhere
1:39
seedy. It's just that she
1:41
doesn't really do a ton of research. She's only
1:43
looking for, okay, does it have a gym? Does
1:46
it have a pool? Is
1:48
there breakfast included? Just typical mom things that
1:51
you're looking for. So,
1:53
she says, well, hey, I found a place. It's
1:55
not too terribly expensive because we rolled into town
1:57
at about 10 o'clock at night. place.
2:01
So when I'm hungry, you know, the boys, we
2:03
were eating on the way down, but I don't eat because once I eat,
2:06
I get tired and I don't want to get tired when I'm behind the
2:08
wheel. I was going to wait till we get there. And
2:11
I had a chuckle because as we pulled into
2:13
the parking lot, there just so happened to be
2:15
a restaurant right
2:17
next door. Okay. Hooters.
2:20
Hooters. Not even
2:22
next door, Mike. They shared the
2:25
same parking lot. Maybe
2:27
your wife's an angel for picking that place. Could
2:29
be. Yeah. Um, to the point where, um, the
2:33
youngest one says, well, do
2:35
they serve owl? Like, well, I don't understand
2:37
because, you know, they're the giant owl. No,
2:39
that's not really what, what, what, what they
2:41
serve their buddy. It's chicken wings and things
2:43
like that. Oh, okay. And we go
2:45
in and check in. Sorry. Um,
2:47
did not take him there. God, no,
2:49
I mean, are you kidding me? Who have you ever
2:52
been to a Hooters? They're
2:54
the most benign nothing. Right.
2:56
They're nothing. I know. But that point has to
2:58
learn. We're all because we've got a long day,
3:00
the next day on the road. So it was,
3:03
we just, we're here to take
3:05
a shower, crash and get up and get back on
3:07
the road as soon as possible. The next morning, I
3:09
think I took my nephew to a Hooters and he
3:11
was real young. He was like eight years old and
3:14
the waitress came over and he said, Hey, you want to
3:16
see something cool? I thought, Oh, what's going to be, got
3:18
down and started doing pushups. I thought, ladies
3:21
and gentlemen, I think my nephew might be straight because
3:25
it was like, uh, how do I
3:27
impress this girl? I'm going to do some
3:29
pushups. I know. I'll do
3:31
some pushups. Oh my God. There you go,
3:33
buddy. You already get how to pick up girls.
3:36
Was that the one at the wall of America? Uh, no,
3:38
this was a different one. I'm forgetting where. Yeah. I must've
3:40
been the mall of America. Yeah. This was years ago. Okay.
3:42
It was pretty darn funny, but that's down on the ground
3:44
and say, I'm going to do push up
3:46
to show her what I got. I was like, you
3:48
go, you go. So we continue
3:50
on and we, we do the, we got to
3:52
do the four corners, which was very, very cool.
3:55
It was really windy and cold though. That day.
3:57
So it was, it was pretty tough.
4:00
standing there, you know, just getting the photo and things
4:02
like that. Yeah, pushing you out of Nevada or what?
4:04
Well, each one of us picked a state. I think
4:06
I got stuck with New Mexico. But it was kind
4:08
of neat to say we did that, you know, and
4:10
then we get back in and then we stood on
4:12
the corner, Winslow, Arizona. Oh, wow. We do
4:14
that. That's a fine side I heard. Yeah, exactly. I
4:17
get to buy a t-shirt for $30. And
4:19
then we finally get to our destination. We get
4:22
checked into the house. We rent it. Everything
4:25
was great. Yeah,
4:29
I'll save part of that for later. So
4:32
then we go to not one, not
4:35
two. Oh, no. But three baseball
4:37
games, Michael. And one was a college baseball game.
4:39
And you know whose idea that that was? It
4:42
can't be your wife. It was my wife's
4:44
idea. Why? What
4:46
is she? I think she's playing the long game here.
4:49
Okay. I think she's trying to
4:51
show them. Isn't this a
4:53
great place to come and watch games?
4:55
Maybe you should move down here. Because
4:57
my wife hates winter with a bloody
4:59
pattern. She hates winter. So I think
5:01
she's playing the long game. You're trying
5:03
to set this up like you guys should move down. I
5:06
have a place to go to come visit. So
5:08
I think that's what it was. And the boys all wanted to
5:11
go to these three games? Oh, it was a blast. We had
5:13
a good time. Yeah, but let me re- I didn't ask if
5:15
they had a good time. I asked did
5:17
they want to go to the games. They did? Oh,
5:19
for sure. I got bummed that
5:22
we didn't get to Phoenix soon
5:24
enough on Sunday to attend a
5:27
spring training game on Sunday. Because we didn't pull
5:29
into town until about 7 o'clock Sunday night. 6
5:32
or 7 o'clock in that area on
5:34
Sunday night. You're giving me that look. That
5:36
is really sweet. I did not go
5:38
to any baseball game. Because you were in Florida. I was in
5:40
Florida. I did not. But on my
5:42
flight back, and this is kind of weird for me
5:45
to talk about, but I'm going to talk about it
5:47
anyways. Because I saw a local Minnesota hero, Joe Maurer,
5:49
on our flight home. Oh, you're kidding. Okay. Because
5:52
he has a place in Fort Myers, right? Yeah, he does. And
5:54
I don't know where, but down there someplace. And
5:57
He sat two rows in front of me on
5:59
the flight. In Comfort class.
6:02
And so I'm frugal. I.
6:05
Was income for glass or my wife was uncover.
6:07
Plus my kids are way back in the plane.
6:10
I had no idea sexism place cells are they
6:12
are going to I saw that want on like
6:14
don't even technically it's I got to be for
6:16
them to they weren't in my class to get
6:19
in right? so they.on and they're old enough that
6:21
they can do that by themselves. But I was
6:23
weirdly proud of Joe. That.
6:26
He didn't like he didn't take a fifty thousand
6:28
dollar flight in a private jet down there. right?
6:31
And you had said that, he's pretty frugal.
6:34
And. I and the I find that
6:36
so refreshing and I'm so excited for
6:39
him that he's doing that. and he
6:41
is incredibly philanthropic. You know that road
6:43
for sure later. But. I would
6:45
like see as a D H as the
6:47
Joe Mauer Field House right So shows a
6:49
young man and he gave them money for
6:52
the Joe Mauer feel how so a green
6:54
Durham Hall he does I am my kids
6:56
good antibody and he gives like a fifteen
6:58
thousand dollar prize way for nativity for a
7:00
charity or tools and I I thought well
7:02
maybe he's. See. To meet
7:04
for five hundred million bucks Play baseball? Ah
7:07
well. because that but said it it would
7:09
have been a lottery. Stuff like that Outdoorsy
7:11
make his and all. I first tried to
7:13
I meet. Let's say let's say. Three
7:16
hundred million dollars? Well, that's enough to
7:18
be able to fly first class no
7:21
matter what their rights and or private.
7:23
Because that's plenty of money private. I
7:25
was so excited to see him on
7:27
the flight. Hours a lot
7:30
with. This is an example of an
7:32
athlete that every person would want their
7:34
kid to become That athlete he's got
7:36
a beautiful family, is super generous like
7:38
incredibly so you don't worry about him
7:40
off the field at all. not at
7:42
the about that. Steve looks like just
7:44
ear. Proud Dad edges a nice
7:46
guy is a blue collar guy from say
7:49
Pop and how close That's right and I
7:51
was just as I saw him and I
7:53
said i said hey Joe congratulations on your
7:55
Hollis entrance like that was so cool. They
7:57
said it, it must be a big deal.
8:00
You can. I felt like it was a big
8:02
deal to me fss and I'd assume for you
8:04
it was even more than I sell it for
8:06
and I really did disease it a hometown hero
8:08
and is just such a nice guy. but I
8:10
was. I was just like I but I think
8:12
I was more impressed is very impressive that he
8:15
made the whole same but I was more impressed
8:17
that he's not a moron with and seventy nine
8:19
million dollar Jed that he drives. Attorneys who are
8:21
my bike is there are athletes that will do
8:23
that every blow. Their money that blow their money
8:25
on a job will be able to give generously
8:28
like he's been doing his wife or his majesty.
8:30
Oh it's young and his family give generously
8:32
for life times if he keeps doing what
8:34
he's doing and it's just super super cool
8:36
I was that was my cool claim to
8:39
fame on and then I saw i'm oh
8:41
you know wells I saw a crap we
8:43
were just talking about him couple shows ago.
8:45
You're saying they a guy had a me
8:48
too movement or something where he said that
8:50
the wrong and he had a starter are
8:52
gambling thing is an older I'm he's an
8:54
older Louis Ck known on an ohm he
8:57
Okay oh wait one second Minnesota connection. No
8:59
not Minnesota. Not Marv
9:01
Albert, but somebody like Marv Albert.
9:04
That. Etc. Then he went into the
9:06
gambling world. He started again and must heard or
9:08
read most burger he lives by my parents down
9:11
there. You're kidding We? are you? That bull's eye
9:13
water? The chance of that we just talked about.
9:15
I'm. Literally. On our little under the
9:17
show Maybe. and then he was right There Are likely
9:19
to introduce them to the podcast. I know I didn't
9:21
say we just talked about you and your to. They
9:23
could remember if he had a me too movement or
9:25
if he said something lol. No, it wasn't really a
9:27
excuse. Me
9:30
it was it roughness sir that he just get
9:32
kind of got a little pervy on our age,
9:34
immature and scarves fiancee now weiss armed at the
9:36
national championship for I was an awesome is I
9:38
did the gossiping the others probably most but some
9:40
people made made a big deal about yeah so
9:42
but he was there and he looks like he
9:44
was doing well as all family was there were
9:46
also now my the pool dollars funding as one
9:48
of those as I do want to take a
9:50
picture of I'm Nicole said you want to go
9:52
get a pitcher with a and it's a reverse
9:54
why not. i don't care of
9:56
money off of like i don't know it's
9:58
a pillar of magazine cover Okay, so
10:00
let me let me explain to you down where
10:02
this is where I went on the
10:04
storm came right through Naples Oh, yeah, and so everything
10:07
got destroyed Well, there's a bunch of houses down there
10:09
and I don't live in one of those houses down
10:11
there I live in the condos down the way right
10:13
and my the only reason I have one of those
10:15
was cuz my parents gave it to Me right they
10:17
they they own them and and we get to stay
10:19
in one of their places super generous of my parents
10:22
Right, they don't technically give it to us. But you
10:24
know what I mean, right? We can use it It's
10:26
a family thing. And so these
10:28
houses that were One-point-time in
10:30
1990 they were five hundred thousand then they
10:32
decided to be two and a half million
10:34
and then when they got to two and
10:36
a half Million everybody knocked them down and
10:38
built seven a half million dollar houses And
10:41
then the seven and a half million
10:43
dollar houses lasted to about two thousand and
10:45
then someone said well We really need fifteen
10:47
million dollar houses here So now they're all
10:49
fifteen million dollars then the storm came and
10:51
the storm whipped half of them had enough
10:53
damage that the people said Let's
10:56
knock this one over because now we have the
10:58
storm damage and let's build a new one Someone's
11:00
building a forty five million dollar house
11:02
on the beach in
11:04
Benita Springs Wow And
11:06
I'm looking at it. I'm like what? Who
11:10
has and this is not like a city block
11:12
long like, you know a block by block of
11:14
beach This is your next-door neighbor.
11:17
You could throw a newspaper to and hit
11:19
right? I mean you are right next to
11:21
another house I thought who
11:24
who is that guy who's building a 45
11:26
million dollar house? And it's two houses with
11:28
this skyway to it and his mother-in-law is
11:31
gonna have half Oh God his wife are
11:33
gonna have the other half and I don't
11:35
know who it is I am sure I
11:37
could find out because everyone down there's from
11:39
Minnesota everyone down there Sure, Minnesota, and I
11:42
just think I'm really excited to see who
11:44
that is, but it's funny in my lifetime, right?
11:46
I was I'm longer than my lifetime
11:48
But my memory of like in college from 1991
11:50
when we first started going down there the
11:52
houses have like Regenerated themselves over
11:55
and over they just keep knocking them down
11:57
knocking them down knocking them down and I
11:59
remember my dad and I looking at one of
12:01
the houses I'm like a million dollars who would spend
12:03
a million dollars to be on the beach and Now
12:06
that house it's been ripped down
12:08
twice or three times. Sure. Just the property's worth
12:11
six million dollars or whatever I'm like, what is
12:13
going on? They don't make more
12:16
beachfront property FYI Well, that's just it and
12:18
that's part of what I was gonna bring
12:20
up is the fact that The
12:22
last time I was in Arizona was about
12:24
six years ago My wife does she
12:27
works for Park Nicklin and they do a conference down there
12:29
So I've been able to tag along a couple of times
12:32
and I remember just the drastic change between
12:35
That time and now where I
12:37
am NOT kidding that I did a
12:39
lot of driving. Yeah, you can't go Two
12:42
miles. It's just like Florida in areas that
12:44
you cannot go without seeing another. Oh, they're
12:46
building another place Freaking
12:49
believable and it's not I mean because
12:52
I was meaning I met
12:54
up with my buddy Troy who's happens to be
12:56
a huge listener to the show and And
12:59
he was told me that when they when he and his
13:01
wife moved down there He's he's a firm of Minnesota guy
13:03
when he and his wife moved down there about two and
13:05
a half years ago They
13:07
couldn't even put a bid in on a place
13:09
because if you want like a property if you
13:11
want a house Well, good luck
13:13
to you because you're gonna get outbid before you even
13:16
think about going to look at the place level and
13:18
make a bid I don't know. Yeah, and so and
13:20
that will obviously 2022 the Housing
13:24
market was on fire back then but
13:26
it's still somewhat the case now because
13:28
that's why all these condo buildings and
13:30
and What do we call those?
13:32
It's um? Low maintenance living, you
13:34
know where you don't have to worry about well,
13:36
nothing outside. Yeah, so it's a lot of those that are
13:39
being built And throw it up. It's like my god We
13:43
bought all of our trips. We could not believe how many we
13:45
saw it was You can
13:47
just keep growing out right? Yeah, there's no
13:49
line of water that stops you from growing
13:51
out true But in this Fort
13:53
Myers Benita Springs Naples area you you can
13:55
go to the middle of the state right?
13:57
You can go away from the coast and
13:59
ever Everything's going out from the coast where
14:01
they're just building brand new these housing developments
14:04
in these communities. And
14:07
it's really cool, but I'm going to tell you, I
14:09
really enjoy it down there. I've been going down there
14:11
pretty much all my life. But you're ready to come
14:13
home. But it is driving, and driving can take 10
14:15
minutes or an hour and 10 minutes to go to
14:17
the same distance, depending on what time you leave. The
14:20
only nice part is, I
14:22
like to usually eat a little early, but we
14:24
said, hey, let's eat at 7.30 or
14:26
8 o'clock, and the restaurants are
14:28
empty by 7.30. Someone
14:32
starts eating at 4.30, another group comes in at 5.30,
14:34
and then by 6.37, everyone's gone.
14:38
So you have pick of the litter with all the restaurants, and
14:40
you can drive back and forth. Everyone's in bed by 8.15. I
14:42
mean, I get it, right? If you have nothing to do and
14:44
you're just kind of waiting to go to dinner, you go to
14:46
dinner at 5 o'clock. You don't want to wait till 8 o'clock
14:49
to go to dinner. But you do have to get
14:51
adjusted to that. It's something
14:53
about traffic. It just drives me bonkers. Speaking
14:57
of that, that was the other part where
14:59
I was going to say, so basically, the
15:01
extent of your spring training baseball activity was
15:03
you meeting Joe Maurer on the airplane. That's
15:06
right. And just me just beaming in
15:08
pride of what an impressive Minnesota he is, right?
15:10
Just a guy that I just want my kids
15:12
to know and what a great... Everybody's
15:16
cool. They're just so impressive. So
15:20
you were right. What was I? You were.
15:23
I set forth to come back
15:26
to the great over-tax state of
15:28
Minnesota Friday morning. I
15:31
drop off Jess and the boys at the airport.
15:34
They drove down with you, but they flew
15:36
home. Correct. Because that was enough
15:38
for them. The one drive down. Then we went to
15:40
it. We did a couple of excursions.
15:44
We got to go see the
15:46
man-made lake in Phoenix.
15:48
It's huge and it's very, very cool. And
15:51
there's a lot of hiking trails. Do
15:53
you see the automotive barnyard thing that
15:55
you are going to drive by that
15:57
where the trucks are planted in the
15:59
ground in Kansas? I was gonna,
16:02
but when we drove through there, because when we
16:04
drove by it, it was dark. So
16:06
it was kind of like, we could stop, but I don't
16:08
really want to stop. I did think about it though, I
16:10
really did. So coming back, we had
16:13
to check out of the house by noon and
16:16
their flight was at 9.45 in the
16:18
morning. So
16:20
I had to get them to the airport by about 7.30, whatever,
16:24
and Phoenix traffic in the morning is god awful.
16:26
Afternoon's it's not too bad, but in the morning
16:28
it's really bad. We
16:30
got up, got in the car, got
16:33
into the airport, get back to the house by eight
16:36
o'clock or whatever it was. So
16:38
then I begin the process of packing all the S
16:40
up. We gotta pack everything up, we gotta pack the
16:42
truck, and I want to pack in a certain way
16:44
where I can grab stuff as I need to, because
16:47
I need to spend the night on my way back. So
16:50
I'm packing up the food, I'm packing up this, I'm packing
16:52
up that. I finally hit the road at
16:54
about 10.30 Friday morning. My
16:57
goal was to get to
16:59
Salt Lake City by Friday
17:01
night, because I thought, well,
17:03
if I do that, I think I
17:05
can get all the way back home the
17:07
next day, getting in late. That was my
17:10
plan. Is that the most direct route? That
17:12
seems like a, so you went from,
17:14
I mean, I'm just trying to picture it. You went straight
17:16
north. Straight north, there's no somewhat angled off
17:18
road that you can get. There's two different ways
17:20
you can go. You can either go through, like
17:22
when we came down, we did the southern route
17:24
through New Mexico, and that way,
17:27
and that took a little bit longer, but we weren't in
17:29
a hurry. But the way back, you
17:31
can go through Salt Lake City, and then through
17:33
Wyoming, and why not, or you can go through
17:36
Colorado, well, they were gonna get snow. Oh, okay.
17:38
And so I didn't wanna do that, and risk
17:40
the chance of getting caught
17:43
in the Rocky Mountains and the snowstorm. That was
17:45
like the worst possible scenario. Sure. So
17:48
I'm looking at the map before I leave, and I think, well,
17:50
there's two routes I can take to Salt Lake City. One
17:53
is the direct route through Flagstaff, which
17:56
we somewhat came down that way, and
17:58
driving through the mountains, they got snow. on our
18:00
way down and it was little harrowing at times. And
18:03
so I already did that. I want to go the other way. So I wanted
18:05
to do the other
18:07
route which clipped the southern
18:09
tip of Nevada and then shot
18:11
straight up towards Salt Lake City.
18:14
Okay. All right, we're going to go.
18:16
We're going to do it. That'd be
18:18
great. Three-lane highway gets reduced to one
18:20
lane about an hour and ten
18:22
minutes in because of a car accident. Oh
18:24
no. And I don't know if you
18:26
know this, but you're bleeped because
18:29
there's no other route. This
18:33
is the way. So that kind of
18:35
sent me back a little bit. I barely got
18:37
to Utah Friday night. Utah
18:40
is a big state. Yeah, it takes a long time to get through. And
18:43
so I checked in at some Podunk
18:47
Motel 6 in
18:49
the middle of freaking nowhere to
18:51
the point where I didn't even want to
18:53
shower when I got there because I just
18:55
thought, ech. You just laid
18:58
on top of the cover. Exactly. That's
19:00
exactly what I did. I'm watching the college basketball game
19:02
going, I'm just going to nod off for
19:04
a few hours and I'm getting the hell out of here
19:06
as soon as I can. So then
19:09
I get in, we get through Utah and
19:11
of course I hit
19:13
a snowstorm on Saturday. And
19:15
I'm thinking, okay, well, what am I going to do
19:17
here? So I end up, I'm going through Utah
19:20
and then I'm kind of going through Wyoming and I'm
19:22
not going, you know, it's a 70 or
19:24
80 mile an hour speed limit, but I'm going 62 because the
19:28
weather's lousy. And I
19:30
barely get to South Dakota. I mean, rapid, I'm
19:32
like, I get it. I've been in
19:34
the car for 13 hours. I'm exhausted.
19:36
Oh no. The only cool thing
19:39
was I did end up making it to Wahl where
19:41
my wife went to high school. So I ended up
19:43
there maybe. I stayed at
19:45
her best friend's family's hotel
19:49
that they own in Wahl. So I got to
19:51
stay there. That was kind of cool. But
19:54
by God, by the time I got home, I was
19:56
done. I said, I'm never doing this again. I'm going
19:59
to travel like a normal. normal person from here
20:01
on out. Yeah. I
20:03
just, you were right. Yeah, I need to stop traveling
20:05
that way. You know, don't give up. Don't
20:08
give up. So? Because you've
20:10
been, just think of all the times you had a
20:12
great time doing it, right? So that's
20:14
one out of 20 that was sour.
20:16
That's true. That's true. So it's like 5% sour,
20:18
95% sweet. And you know, again, all
20:20
of those little, I got to do the Hoover Dam.
20:23
Yep. Which is cool. Yep.
20:26
And I still don't for the life of me realize. How
20:29
big it is? Well, not only that, but there
20:32
are people who do the overlook
20:34
on the bridge way up there where the
20:36
freeways I'm thinking, I'm getting
20:38
nervous watching them up there. I can't even
20:40
imagine being up on that overlook looking
20:43
down on everything. I would, what are you
20:45
nervous about? Do you know how far up
20:47
in the air that that is looking down
20:49
at the, at the, where we are, where the
20:51
Hoover Dam is? And? Oh
20:53
God. I just, well, see,
20:55
I think people who are afraid of heights fear that
20:57
they're going to jump. I
21:00
like looking, I'm getting jittery thinking about it now. I never
21:02
would think about it at all. Yeah. I
21:04
just, anyway, that's really funny. But I can tell you
21:06
one thing. One thing
21:08
that saved me. Let's see. This would have
21:10
been. Podcasts. No, this would have been that
21:12
too. But this would have been Saturday
21:15
night in the beautiful metropolis
21:17
known as wall, South Dakota. And
21:20
that was my bottle of harmony spirits. It's
21:22
all I kept thinking about. We'd
21:24
like to welcome harmony spirits back in the
21:26
fold here on the weekly scramble podcast. They've
21:28
been with us. God, how many
21:30
years now has it has harmony been with us? It's you. It's
21:33
been, it's been a while, but they are back
21:35
and you know what? It's going to be great
21:38
to be working with these guys once again, harmony
21:40
spirits.net. That is their website. And if you go
21:42
to their website, you can see
21:44
all sorts of tastings and all sorts of cool
21:46
events that they have tied in. I know they
21:48
do really cool car shows down there at their
21:50
tasting room in harmony, Minnesota, and
21:53
they do make wonderful handcrafted spirits right here
21:55
in the great state of Minnesota. And
21:57
I got to tell you, the bourbon got me
21:59
through. Saturday night. I'm just gonna tell you that
22:01
right now. Because that was the one thing, right? You can
22:03
be like looking forward to, okay, this
22:05
is harrowing and this is everything, but I'm gonna
22:08
get checked in, I'm gonna put on college
22:10
basketball, and I'm gonna pour myself a nice
22:12
tall, maybe two cubes, maybe two cubes of
22:14
my bourbon. But I'm looking forward to
22:16
it. I know Mike is as well with our
22:18
continued relationship with our friends at Harmony Spirits.
22:21
You can also visit their Twitter account or
22:23
X as we like to call it now,
22:25
at Harmony Spirits on social media. But do
22:27
this for me, please go into your local
22:29
liquor store and ask for their Harmony brand
22:32
by name because I don't think that people
22:34
realize just how big of a voice that
22:36
they have when it comes to things
22:38
like that. So please do us a favor and ask
22:40
for their Harmony brand by name. We would really
22:42
appreciate it. So I
22:44
neglected to bring this up yesterday
22:47
on Monday Night Sports Talk, but you know what? I'm almost
22:49
glad I did forget. Really? Because you know
22:51
what happened over the weekend. You know
22:53
what? I've been so out of it. I haven't. And I
22:56
have to a certain extent too, and it almost bums me
22:58
out that I wasn't able to watch most of this in
23:00
real time. But my school, Minnesota
23:03
State Mankato, became history
23:06
makers over the weekend. Do you know this?
23:08
No. They not only won
23:10
the Division 2 National Championship in
23:13
men's basketball. Okay. They won
23:15
the Division 2 National Championship in women's
23:17
basketball. Really? Only the second time in
23:20
the history of college basketball that that's
23:22
ever been done. I think I saw
23:24
them. Was it a last-minute
23:26
shot that he made? Yeah. Yeah. What a
23:28
great shot. In fact, what makes it even
23:30
better is the one kid
23:33
that passed it to the other kid,
23:35
their brothers. Their brothers
23:37
from Waseca, Minnesota. You're kidding. I'm
23:39
not kidding. And they're both unbelievably
23:41
good. It's cool because I
23:44
had the chance to go to three games,
23:46
four games this year, three or four games
23:49
this year. And it's because
23:51
again, when I was in school, yeah, they had
23:53
a basketball team, but they weren't, they were okay.
23:55
We would maybe go to a game here and
23:57
there, but they've become like, when I
23:59
went to the because Glen Taylor built them the
24:01
Taylor Center, which is right on campus. And
24:04
it's really, if you get the chance
24:06
next year, and you're, and if
24:08
you've got a kid that's a basketball fan, take
24:10
them to a game there. And I'm telling you
24:12
why it's worth it. It's a beautiful arena. You
24:15
get to sit really close to the action
24:18
and you're taking your kid for five
24:20
bucks. Yeah. It's nothing. And
24:22
it's, it's really good basketball. But
24:24
it was so cool to see. And I know
24:26
they had a, I think they had
24:28
scheduled a parade, but because of the weather, I
24:31
think they did everything indoors instead right
24:33
there on campus. What? Yesterday
24:35
it was, it was pouring in Mankato. Oh,
24:38
it was. Rain and not snow. Yeah. So
24:41
they decided to move everything indoors. So I saw some
24:43
of the clips and footage and things that were circulating
24:45
on social media, but it was, it
24:47
was cool to see like, Oh yeah, I
24:49
went to school there. Sure. And
24:51
to see them being put on like the national
24:53
stage was pretty freaking cool. The girls game, uh,
24:55
close or did they do the girls game? Wasn't
24:58
as close as the boys. I think they won
25:00
by six, but they had
25:02
a couple of close games leading up to
25:04
the champion game. I can't
25:06
remember. Did you see what a dink
25:09
thing for no, but it was just a
25:11
joke. Actually I've watched more female college
25:13
basketball than men's college basketball. Got suckered in
25:15
last night. Didn't I got suckered into everything?
25:18
Yeah. All Caitlin Clark. That's all
25:20
I could tell. Okay. And
25:22
park all the time. Yeah. Is there
25:24
a nickname? I thought it was,
25:26
I don't know, white chocolate. It was something really
25:28
cool. It was, it was super cool like that.
25:30
It was super smooth. Well, the neatest thing she
25:32
did, I thought was, did you see after the
25:35
game where they're huddling? Yeah, we're going back to
25:37
the final four and she has the game ball.
25:39
Caitlin Clark has the game ball and
25:42
she passes it to her brother in
25:44
the stance. Oh really? And
25:47
absolutely drills him in the chest. Just perfectly
25:49
a perfect pass from it had to have
25:51
been a hundred feet away. I really enjoyed
25:53
when the dad, when she was complaining and
25:55
the dad told her to shut up. Oh
25:57
yeah. It's like, Oh yeah. That's
25:59
pretty like. So I mean. Sea
26:02
is. Revolutionizing.
26:05
Room: Women: Sports. People. Are pain
26:07
a ton of attention to her and rightfully
26:09
so. Nothing's cooler than walking across mid court
26:11
and saying i get a real chance of
26:13
making a three years I'm just gonna go
26:15
and tax credit check for it. I read
26:17
your legs as you know in my lifetime
26:19
thrown a bunch balls in from half court
26:21
like plan around but I don't think ever
26:23
in a game scenario have I'm ever made
26:25
a three point. I hadn't slept all this
26:28
as I played his even his backyard ever
26:30
be I did number like in the game
26:32
I've never actually made one for me. I'm
26:34
when she's make them from near half court
26:36
with complete. Impunity where she's like I'm doing as
26:38
I don't care what you do see, the is
26:40
just the difference and Emmett, you can even see
26:42
it not to bring it back to. The
26:45
trip You can even see it when you're
26:47
watching different levels of guys playing spring training.
26:49
Base bomb that will discuss. Got no shah
26:52
sir he says here cause he's a body
26:54
the of oh my god isn't that sad?
26:56
I forgot to tell you one of the
26:58
craziest stories. So. We're at.
27:00
I know, I know, we're at the Brewers
27:02
Rocky Spring Training game. I admire as as
27:04
know my goodness and so. On.
27:07
Earth is ah, the spectrum my son's that we
27:09
get our pictures taken with the line up on
27:12
the Milwaukee Sausages. And. Did not see if
27:14
they had a sausage race like they always do it.
27:16
The bird games wasn't a festival. Internal they
27:18
are they in that it's seventh inning and
27:20
the five sausages race against each other and
27:22
sense of and so. We. Said hey
27:24
number for be old we were. We're here to
27:27
celebrate. I'm a firm or line up with all
27:29
of and I'll buy a bunch of kids, look
27:31
at it, get in the picture with them to
27:33
and number Five commented on my photo on twitter
27:35
and saying hey I got screwed was literati. our
27:37
guy. that's not what I want to see Me.
27:40
Are getting settled in and I bought us
27:42
law and seats because my wife loves to
27:44
just sit on the ground in the sunshine
27:47
and doesn't care what the score as he
27:49
just wants to be at the ballpark rain.
27:51
So they so the grass and I was
27:53
trying to be really careful what not getting
27:55
fried the first day. they are them. So
27:57
I'm standing about. Thirty. feet
27:59
away from them under the canopy of
28:03
the stadium, the grandstand. And so
28:06
I'm standing there and right next to me are
28:08
two women. One's
28:10
in a wheelchair, she's probably 90, and then
28:12
another woman who was a little bit younger
28:14
but had the walker. So they're
28:17
sitting in that wheelchair
28:19
accessible area. That's kind of
28:21
fenced in area. Correct. And
28:24
next to them was, I'm assuming, one of
28:26
their sons, who was probably in his early
28:28
mid-90s. And they were super sweet.
28:31
They had their brewer shirts on. And
28:34
we were down the third baseline. And
28:36
keep in mind, when you're in a spring training game,
28:39
you're close to the X, right? Yeah, yeah, you're really
28:41
close. And I've been in a ballpark every day of
28:43
my life, essentially. So I know to always, you got
28:45
to watch the batter. You got to pay attention. You
28:47
got to pay attention. You got to watch the batter.
28:49
So we're down the third baseline, and left-handed hitter Jake
28:51
Cave for the Rockies, former twin is up to bat.
28:54
And he kind of slaps at a fastball
28:56
to just try to fight
28:59
off strike three. And
29:01
this thing is screaming right for
29:03
us. Really? Because I'm standing right
29:05
next to these three people. To the
29:07
point where I can tell in a
29:10
split second, like, one of them is
29:12
going to die. Yeah, if I don't catch this, I'm going to
29:14
say yeah. Well, and I'm behind them. Yeah, okay. So
29:17
I scream heads up. And
29:21
in front of them, in a seat, is some 34-year-old guy who
29:23
is not sober. Okay.
29:30
And thank God he wasn't, because he stood
29:32
up like, I'm going to catch it. And
29:35
it ricocheted off of his
29:37
bare hand, preventing it from
29:40
hitting and killing, potentially killing
29:42
this elderly woman. And
29:44
it rocketed off of his hand,
29:48
and it went down
29:50
the aisle in some cases. But this guy saved
29:52
this woman's life, and I am not
29:54
exaggerating. Isn't that nice? Because it would
29:57
have really done some damage. I'm
29:59
fearful. I think you would have seen that and she would
30:01
have died you would have never been able to go
30:04
to another baseball ever And ever again would have totally
30:06
dampened all the next two games that I plan to
30:08
go to into a Brewers What what game brews Rockies
30:10
and then what other game did you go to so
30:12
that that was Monday Mike and then on Tuesday? The
30:15
Diamondbacks played at their own stadium Which was really
30:17
neat because I did want to go to their
30:19
stadium as long as we were down there and
30:22
they hosted an exhibition game against
30:24
Cleveland So we did and we got
30:27
Decent seats at a fairly low price the
30:29
problem is they're selling their concessions for the exact
30:31
same Sure, there was a lot of other beers a
30:33
12 dollar beer Did you
30:35
um are do you have a do you have
30:37
a scorecard there? And are you keeping score are
30:39
you keeping like you know that guy got a
30:41
bunt? I don't mean you're doing that
30:43
I would be the sweetest thing in the world
30:45
because I I want to show my Sons how
30:47
to do the book okay? And they've been around
30:49
the game enough to know Kind
30:51
of how to score certain things because my
30:54
little guy my nine-year-old He's all
30:56
about like the numbers in the math and all
30:58
that Yeah So he loves because he helps to
31:00
do the book for his older brothers team Okay, when
31:02
he tags along sure and I think that that's just
31:04
good for him to learn How do you sit down
31:06
and look at the book you
31:08
say oh, I remember when that guy sure wanted
31:10
Oh sure and and stole home and because you
31:12
can see it there. Yeah, so it's like it's
31:14
like baseball idiot Braille
31:18
Just see it and you're just like
31:20
I remember that game so much that
31:23
Exhibition game between the Diamondbacks and someone
31:25
else so you'll love this part, too
31:28
So the biggest thing was when we
31:30
when we went there and that where
31:32
the ballpark is in Phoenix It's actually
31:34
it's very cool because they
31:37
have a lot of cool bars and
31:39
restaurants around got it the
31:41
ballpark in fact where the Suns play basketball, it's a
31:44
Block maybe away from where the baseball stadium is
31:47
and that whole area is developed with cool sports
31:49
bars and stuff. It's really neat and So
31:52
we had we went there to one of the
31:54
places over beforehand so the boys could get something
31:56
to eat Dad
31:58
could have a quick beer and then we We could walk into the
32:00
baseball team. And
32:02
I saw the prices at the concession stand.
32:04
Because of course, what do they need right
32:06
away? Well, we want something to drink. It
32:08
just went fine, whatever. So
32:11
I said, well, let's go sit down and watch a little bit of the
32:13
game first. We go down, I'm like, well, God, this is going to cost
32:15
me like $100 just to go to the concession
32:17
stand. But then she says, oh, hey,
32:19
look, there was a sign for the kids
32:22
menu in section 122
32:24
or whatever. So,
32:26
okay, let's walk over there. We wanted to walk around and see the bone
32:29
bark anyway. So
32:31
we go to section 122. And there wasn't many
32:33
people at this game. So the concourses weren't packed. It
32:35
was actually, it was perfect. Although my
32:37
youngest was really mad that we didn't get seats,
32:39
but we're by the pool in the Diamondbacks. Because
32:41
Diamondbacks have a pool in their stadium. So
32:45
I see the kids menu, all items, 299 children, 12 and
32:47
under. Perfect.
32:51
We walk up, I order the hot dog. Here
32:54
comes the hot dog. It's basically
32:56
the size of a little smoky. Oh, you're kidding.
32:59
With the bun. And then
33:01
I got him a rip beer, which was basically
33:04
like a dixie cup. It's half the
33:06
size of a can of Coke. Okay.
33:09
It's, you know, those like fun sized
33:11
cans. It was smaller than that. Oh
33:13
no. And I'm thinking, come on. What
33:16
is this? Why even bother? Yeah.
33:18
Why insult us with that? And I just thought, and again,
33:21
God bless the Arizona Diamondbacks. They're
33:24
trying. Anyway, I did have some
33:26
sporting events with my daughter. We played some, uh, a
33:28
couple rounds of golf down there. Oh, fantastic. And my
33:31
daughter, I've been playing golf mine, you know, all my
33:33
life, five, six years old. I started
33:35
playing and I'm not good, but I can hit the
33:37
ball long. I feel like I could do some things.
33:39
You play. I play. And, um,
33:41
sometimes if I could chip her pot, like
33:43
I'd, I'd shoot really well. This
33:46
day I could not chip her pot when we played
33:48
on Friday, but my daughter gets up on to a
33:50
tee. It's a 232 yard par
33:52
four from the women's tee. Where
33:54
is she? She's played golf for fun
33:57
with her friends. Sure. Doesn't
33:59
play on the golf team. She misses
34:01
a hole-in-one by about one inch. I
34:03
got to off 30 yards I
34:06
would have freaking killed her rivers if
34:08
she would have gotten I've never had a hole-in-one If
34:11
she would have gotten a hole-in-one on a
34:13
par-4 in Florida not really caring whether
34:15
she's there or not I
34:17
would have murdered her I I I
34:20
was like thank God she it was the most Selfish
34:23
thing I've ever done in my entire life and
34:25
she was playing great She was playing great and
34:27
I would have been it kind
34:29
of ruined the round for me because I thought if that would have
34:31
happened I would have had to take
34:33
her out of the car and sitting there You got to walk right
34:36
because I I would have had to penalize her somehow She
34:38
doesn't have any money so I would have had to buy
34:40
drinks for everybody. Yep unacceptable, right? There
34:42
would have been so many I would have made
34:44
her pay me back for every drunk guy
34:46
who needed a beer because my 16 year old
34:48
daughter got a whole One on a
34:50
par-4 it would have been Unbelievably
34:53
cool. She was out driving Everybody
34:55
everybody that were playing it not me, you know,
34:58
why I don't know what have been really cool
35:01
is if She would
35:03
have got the hole-in-one. Yes, she
35:05
would have turned to you She would
35:07
have put said club back in the bag and
35:09
said I'm good. I'm done. I'll never play another
35:13
You know, she's such a cool character. This is
35:15
my daughter Adelaide, right? She's such a cool character
35:17
She was at oh, yeah, I got a hole-in-one
35:19
like it wouldn't have been it wouldn't have phased
35:21
it wouldn't have a is her She was she would have
35:23
been kind of she's played so little golf She
35:25
was so well don't everybody doesn't everybody get a hole-in-one every once
35:27
in a while Yeah, like every 15,000 shots
35:30
So yeah It doesn't happen that much and
35:33
very few people get a hole-in-one on a
35:35
par-4 some ladies do right It's
35:37
a little shorter and I was playing
35:39
from way back. So my hall was
35:41
like 380 yards and hers kind of
35:43
cheating whatever She's a
35:45
darn right here. I mean, I was so proud of her
35:47
though. She was playing so cool She was playing with my
35:49
dad my cousin Cool man, and she was just playing so
35:51
sweet and I thought I could play with her every day
35:53
like this unless she beats me And I'll never play with
35:55
her again. So I don't know how
35:57
my dad plays with me. Although I think he beat me
36:00
that day Sure, but I don't know what it feels like
36:02
to have your son. Just best you all the time. He
36:04
listens to the show religion FYI
36:07
so he's gonna give me a bunch of crap Well,
36:10
I'm glad you had a great vacation. I'm glad you wasted 15
36:12
hours of it Watching
36:16
baseball not playing baseball. Just
36:18
watching me watch it. Yeah, and tapped
36:21
off by the epic thriller of the
36:24
Arizona State Sun Devils and the Cal
36:26
Bears Yeah on Thursday
36:28
night. I gotta say though That's
36:31
if you are the baseball coach at Arizona
36:33
State. It's a good gig You have no
36:35
better recruiting tool and just
36:37
take them there at seven o'clock on
36:40
a whatever night The Sun
36:42
sets off of the red rocks outside
36:45
of your freaking ballpark. It's beautiful.
36:47
It's unbelievable And
36:49
then if you walk the young man Through
36:52
the stands. Yes, that's gonna seal
36:54
the deal. Yeah, I have two daughters I want
36:56
to go to ASU and I said let's go.
36:58
