Having a bad day? We’ve all had them, that day when you just want to punch someone in the face. Nobody seems to understand you, everybody seems to be doing something to deliberately annoy you. It feels like the whole world is against you and yet yesterday you seem to be having such a lovely time.

What the hell happened?

There’s nothing worse than that blind rage, frustrated, angry feeling that comes with having a bad day. And yet somewhere deep inside you know that it’s just a bad day. So why is it so difficult to shake it off and get back to your good mood that you enjoyed the day before?

On here is my top 10 list of things you can do to help you get out of that blue funk.

No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.
Eleanor Roosevelt

    1. Admit to having a bad day. Admitting to having a problem is the first step to tackling it!
    2. Be kind to yourself. We all have bad days, and it’s perfectly normal. Don’t make it worse by beating yourself up for allowing it to happen. Focus on what you’re going to do going forward, to fix the problem. Start by doing something nice for yourself.
    3. Change the way you communicate. We all have our preferred way of communicating, by text, e-mail, phone or face-to-face. By changing the way you communicate you’ll effectively change your point of view and look at things differently.
    4. Realise is not all about you. If somebody’s done something to upset you chances are they have absolutely no idea. Even though in your initial rage you feel like they’ve may have done it deliberately. Assume you’ve got the wrong end of the stick and actually it was just a breakdown in communication or simply a bad joke gone wrong. We’ve all had sense of humour failures at some point.
    5. Exactly what emotion is it that is causing you the problem, anger, fear, disappointment, frustration or something else? It might feel like a whole host of things but generally when you really think about it, it’s just one thing.
    6. Vent your emotions. Explain to yourself why you’re feeling upset, what happened, what previous event is being repeated here? What happened last time you felt like this. Write it all down in a letter or an e-mail but don’t send it! By externalising your emotions, you’ll find that you can look at them more objectively.
    7. Exercise, during exercise your body will release feelgood hormones. These endorphins will make you feel better.
    8. Listen to uplifting music. Sometimes when you’re in a bad mood you do find yourself listening to the most melancholy depressing music. Try something a little bit more upbeat and get your toes tapping.
    9. Go to bed early, it might sound obvious that the sooner you go to bed, the sooner you can get this horrible day over with.
    10. Sleep on it. If it’s still bothering you the next day, you need to talk about it. And don’t let a bad day become a bad week.

Over the last week or so I’ve been playing around with a new app called elevate. This app claims to be your personal brain trainer! Now some years ago I used to have a Nintendo DS hand held games console. On that system I had a very similar brain training game. I must admit I really enjoyed playing around with it. However, I’m not really sure it actually had much effect. So I was interested to see elevate on the App Store and downloaded it for a trial run. It’s available on the Apple app store and android systems as well. You can see more information and watch a video on the app at elevateapp.com. The app encourages you to play three games every day depending on which areas you wanted to improve on when you first signed up. You are Limited to the three games that randomly selects for you each day. You can play additional games but this does require a monthly fee. Each day the app remind you to login and play the latest games. I must admit it does look very pretty, provides you with a sense of achievement when it brings back the results of your game. But again I’m not really sure quite how effective this really would be. You may simply get better at the games but that’s about as far as it goes. It is however, definitely worth checking out if you like that sort of thing.

News

I don’t have a lot of news this time, as I have been recuperating from a minor surgical operation. It’s definitely taking a lot longer to recover from than I first thought I would need. So I’ve just been resting at home taking things easy. This has meant however I’ve had a little bit more time to do some research on other articles that you guys by find interesting. I post these on various social networks so definitely worth joining me on twitter and Facebook so that you get all these updates. I have limited myself to just posting three per day so you won’t get flooded.
