0:22
Hello , my friends , it is so good to be with you
0:24
. The second weekend in January
0:26
2024 is
0:29
going to be a great year
0:31
for you and I , when we just
0:33
fix our eyes on Jesus
0:35
. Today's story is from
0:38
a friend of mine , barry Lyons . Now
0:40
, barry Lyons is from Biloxi and when
0:42
he grew up , he had a dream to
0:44
be a professional baseball player
0:46
. Well , he achieved that goal
0:48
. He's going to share his story
0:50
. He would think oh wow , living
0:53
a childhood dream . Everything just
0:55
was hunky dory and everybody
0:58
lived happily ever after . Well , like
1:00
all stories , no , there are some
1:02
flaws , some mistakes
1:05
and some errors . But let's take
1:07
a listen to Barry Lyons'
1:10
story .
1:12
God bless me with the talent and the determination
1:14
and the visual that
1:16
I wanted to become a big league baseball
1:19
player and by the grace of God
1:21
and all kinds of things happening
1:23
in my favor and blessings
1:26
go over and just the love and
1:28
passion for the great game of the baseball
1:30
.
1:30
Tell us what happened in baseball .
1:32
that kind of messed up your life and put
1:34
some hell in your life , yes , well
1:37
, I began drinking alcohol
1:39
on the weekend my last couple
1:41
of years in high school and
1:43
the party atmosphere and the culture
1:46
that I grew up in it was pretty
1:48
common . And then when I got to college
1:50
, I was blessed to play front copy man
1:52
named Dave Booth-Farris at Delta
1:55
State University and the party continued
1:58
and picked up and drinking more
2:00
and more . And then I was introduced
2:03
to marijuana my second year of college
2:05
and initially didn't care for
2:07
it . But eventually . I
2:10
got to where . It was something that
2:12
I looked over to after the ball game
2:15
or after practice . One
2:17
thing led to another into the minor league
2:19
. Great successes on the field
2:21
our teams did exceptionally
2:24
well . Part of championships was
2:26
most valuable players
2:28
, several different times through college
2:30
and then the minor leagues
2:33
. But that lifestyle of partying
2:35
. The game ended , the party was
2:37
on .
2:37
I'd lose or draw .
2:39
It was just a lifestyle and
2:41
a culture that I got caught up in and
2:43
I made the choices to do it . But
2:46
thankfully , fortunately
2:48
, I made it to the major league in 1986
2:51
, my seventh season in the major
2:53
league , with the New York Mets primarily
2:55
, but three other teams . But the nightlife
2:58
with the partying team and
3:01
just the distractions and
3:03
the temptations that were
3:05
available to you as a member of the
3:07
New York Mets the world championship team
3:10
, probably the highest
3:12
ranking team in baseball
3:15
for the era that I was there . We
3:17
had superstars you mentioned Darryl Strawberry
3:20
, dwight Gooden , keith Fernandez
3:22
and Gary Carter were
3:24
four marquee named players . But
3:26
we had great team all the way across
3:28
the board and we won the World Series . My
3:30
rookie year in 1986 , but
3:32
unfortunately I suffered a broken
3:34
forearm in August of that year
3:37
, so I was not in uniform or
3:39
on the active roster but was certainly
3:41
a part of that team . Anyway , the
3:43
culture of our team was
3:45
you know what we had
3:47
to do and kick butt on the field
3:49
, but the post game was a pretty
3:52
wild and crazy time in
3:54
the mid and late-80s and most
3:56
of my teammates certainly not all , but most
3:58
of us participated
4:00
in that nightlife
4:02
and the party scene and all the things
4:04
that go with it and eventually
4:07
that party lifestyle eventually
4:09
caught up to me throughout my career
4:11
and then after my career , you
4:14
know , when the games were over
4:16
and I managed in the minor leagues a little
4:18
bit . I've been teaching and working in
4:20
baseball in various capacities
4:22
ever since , but the addiction
4:24
stayed there . Ultimately it
4:26
became an addiction . It was fun
4:29
for a season but ultimately it
4:31
became an addiction . It
4:34
just bestowed it through and
4:36
I struggled with it for many , many years
4:38
. And in 2002 I
4:40
moved back home to Biloxi
4:43
with some big goals in mind
4:45
. And in 2005
4:48
Hurricane Katrina came ashore and
4:50
hell broke loose and I
4:52
succumbed to the enemy
4:54
in so many ways . My
4:56
addiction spiraled out of control . I had lost
4:58
devastation and all kinds
5:01
of forms
5:03
and realities and
5:05
my family was
5:08
affected horribly in so
5:10
many ways . And when I needed
5:12
God the most I did return
5:14
to Him . My faith in God
5:16
and my trust in Him carried
5:18
me through all those years to get
5:20
me to achieve my childhood
5:22
dreams . But when I became a Major
5:25
Leagueer and got caught up in the lifestyle
5:27
traffic that go with it , I
5:30
turned from God and I drifted
5:32
into the world and that stronghold
5:35
of addiction that the enemy had on me . He
5:38
held me longer than I ever dreamed I would
5:40
be held . He cost me more than I could
5:42
ever pay and he kept me longer
5:44
than I would ever imagine being kept
5:46
. So it was
5:48
a very difficult time
5:50
after Hurricane Katrina and
5:53
my life really inspired out of control
5:55
, with alcohol primarily
5:57
, but also marijuana and other drugs
6:00
as well . But the alcohol
6:02
and the marijuana was something
6:05
that had a hold on me for many
6:07
, many years and thankfully I made the
6:09
half years plus going
6:11
strong , born again . Christian and God
6:13
has redeemed my life and redeemed
6:15
me in every way and
6:18
I'm just so thankful for that .
6:20
What was it that caused
6:22
you to hit bottom and cry
6:24
out for help ?
6:26
Well , there were several times
6:28
throughout my addiction
6:30
in those latter years where I knew
6:34
I needed help . I knew I needed to
6:36
change , but I
6:38
tried at times they tried to conform
6:40
. I tried to do things
6:43
to change , but
6:45
it's not possible without Jesus
6:47
. And finally , Christmas
6:50
morning , 2011 , I
6:52
woke up empty
6:54
house on the couch
6:57
no Christmas
6:59
tree , no Christmas presents , no
7:01
family , nobody , nothing
7:03
except a bottle of
7:05
Jack Daniels and a bag of marijuana on the
7:07
coffee table . And
7:09
it was in that misery , in that moment
7:11
, when I cried out to the Lord . But the
7:13
devil had such a strong
7:16
hold on me that I struggled
7:19
and battled and chickened out again
7:21
about another
7:23
week . But things happened
7:25
January 2nd 2012
7:27
, that really set
7:30
the wheels in motion . I
7:34
cried out to my then girlfriend , who
7:36
had left me , to
7:39
come help me and she
7:41
got me entered into a detox program
7:44
. And she came , even though she didn't have
7:46
to , and by
7:48
the grace of God , that detox
7:50
program . Really I
7:53
felt myself starting to change
7:55
and the poisons and toxins that
7:57
I put into my body and into my mind
7:59
for so long was slowly
8:01
being removed and I felt
8:03
different pretty much right away . But
8:07
once I completed the process
8:11
of detoxification
8:13
, I chose
8:15
because my wife , Julie
8:17
, today encouraged me
8:19
to go to the home of grace , a
8:22
90 day Christian addiction
8:24
recovery program here in
8:26
Bancleet , Mississippi , and that
8:28
was the turning point for me . And
8:31
the third day in the program I
8:34
heard a sermon at our chapel service
8:36
where the preacher preached
8:38
on the parable of the prodigal son
8:40
, and it just
8:42
illuminated in my mind that I
8:44
could see myself in
8:46
that parable , in that story , in
8:49
that man running to the Father when
8:52
he had the altar call . I literally
8:54
ran to the altar and accepted Jesus
8:56
Christ as my Lord Savior and my life
8:58
was radically transformed .
9:01
So did you get excited about God
9:04
igniting that destiny to pursue
9:06
your destiny ?
9:07
Absolutely , ron . You know there
9:09
were many years where I rarely
9:12
went a day without getting high
9:14
or getting drunk
9:16
or indulging in
9:18
alcohol or drugs
9:20
of some sort for
9:23
many years . But the minute
9:25
I surrendered my life , I
9:27
had been about two weeks clean at that
9:29
point from the detox
9:32
and the time in
9:34
between getting admitted into
9:36
the home of grace in that
9:38
process . So
9:40
I already felt better and I already
9:42
knew I was doing the right thing . But
9:45
it really was a spiritual
9:48
transformation that that
9:51
occurred that night when I went
9:53
to the altar . It wasn't almost
9:55
as if it was an out-of-body experience
9:57
. The supernatural power
10:00
of Jesus Christ overwhelmed me and
10:02
lifted me out of that chair , literally
10:04
. I mean , I'm not
10:06
, you know , for all that I've done in my
10:08
life . I expressed myself
10:11
through my baseball . I was somewhat
10:13
shy , somewhat reserved and in
10:15
some ways still am , but when
10:18
it came to baseball , my life went
10:20
on and everything was
10:22
awesome . Well , baseball
10:25
, as it turns out just as a platform
10:27
for me to share how awesome
10:29
Jesus Christ is and what
10:32
he did for me and how he
10:34
took a guy that was broken
10:36
in every way and
10:38
just , you know , at
10:41
rock bottom , lifted me out
10:43
of the bud and the bottom and put me on
10:45
solid rock . And that night
10:47
at the chapel in Holm , at the Holm
10:49
Grace , began the transformation
10:52
. Not still had 87 days
10:54
in the program , but the word
10:56
of God became real to me
10:58
, became alive to me . I read
11:00
the Bible . I knew a lot of scripture
11:03
, I knew a lot of the stories
11:05
and the teachings of the Bible , but
11:07
it didn't really
11:10
manifest in me until after
11:12
that night and then through the course of
11:14
the program . I couldn't get enough
11:17
. I literally would , just couldn't
11:19
wait for chapel service at night and
11:21
to hear those wonderful
11:23
spiritual guides and teachers there
11:25
just dissecting the Bible for
11:27
us and really comprehending
11:30
and really understanding what
11:32
Jesus was telling me through
11:34
the word of God . It became something
11:36
that it's hard to describe
11:39
. But I've been thankful
11:41
not only for myself to have
11:44
been redeemed and born again
11:46
, but I've led countless
11:48
others to the Holm Grace . I've
11:51
led others to Jesus Christ through
11:53
my sharing , my testimony , and there's
11:55
no greater feeling than
11:57
you know , having your testimony
12:00
help someone to turn
12:02
to Jesus and certainly that is the most amazing thing
12:04
. I e powerful
12:06
thing that I can do
12:09
as a Christian is
12:11
to share and to encourage others
12:13
to seek Jesus Christ and
12:15
open their hearts and their minds to Him
12:17
, because he's there with all
12:19
of us at all times . But
12:22
unfortunately , so many people
12:24
in this world don't know that or don't realize
12:27
that or don't understand that . And
12:30
you know , the ego gets involved
12:32
, which it did for me , and
12:35
Edging got out . This one way
12:38
I've heard , or one description of
12:40
the word ego you
12:42
know over the years , but
12:44
there's so many amazing
12:46
things that have happened since .
12:48
I believe right now there's somebody out
12:50
there that's listening and saying
12:52
you know , that's that might be for Barry
12:54
and Ron and all his other guests he's had
12:57
, but that's not for me , because
12:59
I don't even think Jesus likes me , because
13:01
I've done so many crazy , crappy things
13:03
in my life . What would you tell that person ?
13:05
Well , Jesus is the
13:07
only way , is the way , the truth
13:10
in my life , and only
13:12
through Him and one gets to the Father
13:14
. You know a lot of people don't believe
13:17
, don't see or know Jesus
13:19
in a close , personal way . He
13:23
has heard of Jesus , or most
13:25
everyone , but not everyone
13:27
has surrendered their life to Him
13:29
and really believed and understood
13:31
who he really is . He is the Son of
13:33
God . He came to earth and
13:35
lived a perfect life , a sinless
13:38
life , and he taught
13:40
many , many people and share
13:42
the truth to the
13:44
people of that day . And
13:46
his words were documented and written
13:49
and that is what the word is the Bible
13:51
. The devil is a liar , first
13:54
and foremost . He is a liar
13:56
in his way of attacking most
13:58
people . If you're on his team
14:01
, if you're doing his work , if you're living
14:03
out of the being
14:05
of a
14:07
Christian , if you're living
14:11
that life of bondage
14:13
and that life of addiction and
14:15
that life of sin , then you
14:18
don't know the devil really
14:20
won't mess with you . He'll just kind of
14:22
encourage you to stay the course
14:24
. But once you surrender your life
14:26
to Jesus and you become a Christian
14:29
and you have that transformation
14:32
, he's going to attack you even more . And
14:34
his favorite way , most
14:36
prominent way of attacking you is through
14:38
your mind . He will feed
14:40
you full of lies , feed you full of
14:42
things that you're not worthy , you're
14:45
not good enough , you can't change
14:47
and Jesus is not real , and
14:49
so many other lies that he
14:51
will try to inflict upon
14:53
you . And that's where the word of God comes
14:55
in , that's where the trust in Jesus comes
14:58
in and that's where the supernatural
15:00
power of being a born again Christian
15:02
comes in . You can fight off those
15:04
lines , you can stop those
15:07
fiery darts , you can put that armor
15:09
of God on every day . Amen
15:11
, fight the enemy and that's what's most
15:13
important to stay in the word
15:15
, to trust the Lord , to put
15:17
the armor of God on every day . I'm
15:20
still a work in progress , as we all
15:22
are , but once we
15:24
have been touched by that supernatural
15:27
power that only comes to
15:30
our Lord and Savior , jesus Christ , things
15:32
change radically and my
15:34
mind has been transformed in a way
15:37
that I look at life
15:39
totally different than I used to . I
15:42
trust in the Lord , I trust in His plan
15:44
.
15:45
Well , Barry , one thing I ask all my
15:47
guests how do you get the hell out
15:49
of your life ?
15:50
Turn to Jesus . Jesus is the way
15:53
, the truth and the life . No one comes
15:55
to the Father except through
15:57
Him . And then another
15:59
scripture verse that I really love is
16:01
Romans 8 , 28, . All
16:03
we know , all things work together for good
16:05
for those who love the Lord and are
16:08
called according to His purpose . Everyone
16:11
has a purpose , and the good Lord is there
16:13
waiting to hear from you . Open
16:15
your heart to Him , just to
16:17
just to send Him . If you will , or
16:20
just open that heart door just
16:22
a little bit and invite Jesus in , you
16:24
will be eternally grateful
16:27
and I promise you . I promise
16:29
you , jesus is the end .
16:35
You're listening to Get the Hell Out of your
16:37
Life with your host , Ron Myers
16:40
. Real stories , real struggles
16:42
and real hope .
16:44
Does God speak to us today ? If
16:46
so , what does he sound like ? Thundering
16:49
roars , crashing waves
16:51
, a booming megaphone ? Maybe
16:54
, sometimes , but maybe it's
16:56
not quite as Hollywood , dramatic as all that
16:58
. Maybe it's a little
17:00
more simple . John
17:03
10 , 27 says my sheep
17:05
hear my voice , I know them and
17:07
they follow me . In the midst
17:09
of all the noise and questions , god
17:11
is speaking and we can hear
17:13
His voice . We just need to learn
17:16
to recognize it . So
17:18
what does he sound like ? He
17:20
sounds like love , like
17:23
reconciliation , like
17:25
kindness , wisdom , hope
17:27
, truth . Do
17:29
you know those sounds Then ? Maybe
17:31
you hear His voice more often than you think . Maybe
17:34
you're being led by Him more than you realize
17:37
. Maybe God is speaking
17:39
to you and you actually are listening
17:41
. You just didn't know it .
18:01
Yes , I am a believer . Are
18:03
you a believer ? And if you
18:05
aren't a believer , what's stopping
18:08
you ? I mean , is it because
18:10
what you've been told about
18:12
Jesus here's one of the problems
18:15
that I have discovered about
18:18
being a Christian To
18:22
accept God's grace
18:24
, his love and forgiveness
18:26
and erase all
18:28
of our sins , past , present and
18:30
futures ? It really is
18:33
hard to comprehend , because think
18:35
about this we
18:37
live in a world that is all
18:39
merit-based . I
18:42
mean , if you want to
18:44
get a promotion at work
18:46
, you work hard and hopefully
18:48
you'll climb the ladder to the top
18:50
in the company . You know
18:52
, if you work hard in school
18:55
, you'll get a B or an A
18:57
and maybe you'll be on the president's
18:59
list or the honor roll . It's
19:02
all performance-based . So
19:04
now you come to Jesus
19:06
and you've had all this training all
19:08
your life about performance-based
19:12
recognition . So a
19:14
lot of times that just comes
19:16
into your personal
19:18
relationship with Jesus . You
19:21
have to do something
19:23
, you have to perform because
19:26
God is going to love
19:29
a future version
19:31
of who you are . You're
19:33
growing , you're going to be
19:35
good one day and God's going
19:37
to check the box . But
19:40
that is not Christianity
19:42
, that's religion , and
19:45
Jesus is not in love
19:47
with the future version of us
19:49
. When we come to Him , he
19:52
jumps in our heart , he
19:54
cleans house , gives us
19:56
new desires , new
19:58
thoughts and a new path
20:01
in life , and
20:03
it's all free . It's
20:06
all because of grace and faith
20:08
in Jesus . It's not
20:10
performance-based . You
20:12
are saved from day one
20:15
, and when you are faithless
20:17
, he is faithful , you
20:19
are His , you are one with
20:21
Christ . And that is a very
20:23
hard thing in a merit-based
20:26
world for Christians to believe . I
20:29
hear often people will
20:32
have some kind of tragedy
20:34
in their life and they
20:36
say this is God getting
20:38
even with me . He's punishing
20:41
me because I looked at the wrong thing
20:43
. I said the wrong thing . No
20:46
, who in the world would serve a God
20:48
that would be constantly throwing
20:50
landmines in front of
20:52
the path we're
20:54
walking on ? No , he
20:56
has this beautiful plan . You
20:59
know , the other day I was watching
21:01
, I recorded the New Orleans Saints
21:03
in the Atlanta Falcon game
21:05
and I knew the Saints
21:08
won , but I still wanted to watch
21:10
the game . So I was watching it and
21:12
it came to me . Do you know
21:14
that God can
21:18
see our replay ? He sees
21:20
our whole life . He knows the day we were
21:22
born , the middle of our life and the day we leave
21:24
, but we only see the present
21:26
. But if we could just
21:29
do an instant replay
21:31
of our life and we had the vision to see
21:33
what God has , we
21:35
would see that on this journey
21:37
, his plans for us are good
21:40
. They're wonderful New
21:42
ideas , walking in freedom
21:45
and grace , and it's a beautiful
21:47
life . God's not going to
21:49
cause sickness in your life
21:52
because you did something wrong , because
21:54
the whole world is
21:56
a little bit messed up . We're human
21:58
beings , and hasn't somebody told
22:01
you we are going to make mistakes
22:03
before Jesus and after
22:06
Jesus . It is His beautiful
22:08
grace , his unending
22:11
love , that propels
22:14
us through the difficult times
22:16
in life and we can rest
22:18
assured that no matter how we feel
22:21
, no matter what people tell
22:23
us that Jesus will
22:25
not leave us . He will not forsake
22:28
us . When we are faithless
22:30
, he is faithful
22:33
. I think sometimes
22:35
the hardest
22:37
thing in life is just accepting
22:40
the fact that he loves
22:42
us just as we are
22:44
and that life
22:47
with Jesus it's a lifetime
22:49
of growing , of learning , of
22:52
understanding . Doesn't
22:54
the Bible say something to the effect that
22:56
my sheep will know my
22:58
voice and I will know their voice
23:00
? And one of the most
23:02
healing things that we can do as
23:05
Christians is spend
23:07
time with Jesus and
23:09
we pour out our heart and we
23:11
become transparent . There's
23:14
a healing in that we tell him what's
23:16
on our mind , what is hurting us , what
23:18
is our aspirations in life
23:20
, what we're concerned about
23:23
, and then we can get into
23:25
the gospel , into the New Testament
23:27
, go into the Old Testament under
23:30
the law of Moses , get into
23:32
the New Testament of his grace
23:35
, where Paul said that when we
23:37
come to Christ , we are complete . We
23:39
lack nothing . He's just
23:41
waiting to download
23:44
new ideas , to give
23:46
you the GPS that
23:48
will take you on the path to
23:50
what he created you to become and
23:54
friends . You may be older
23:56
and say , well , that just
23:58
won't work for me . Well , think about
24:00
this . God has a purpose for you
24:02
Now . Maybe it's not the same
24:04
thing that you would have done if you would have looked
24:07
for that purpose at age 19 . Maybe
24:09
you're in your 50s now , maybe in your 60s
24:11
, but what he does is he modifies
24:14
that plan based
24:16
on your age and experience
24:19
and you are still living
24:21
those dreams . It just is a different
24:23
way than if you would have started earlier . But
24:26
what this does ? It gives you
24:28
that sense of fulfillment , of
24:30
purpose , of being needed
24:33
in this world . Because you are needed
24:35
and sometimes the best
24:38
thing you can do quit listening
24:40
to some of these negative
24:42
naysayers out there , because
24:45
I want to encourage you that , no
24:47
matter what you think , no matter
24:49
what you feel , no matter what
24:52
other people have said , you
24:54
are redeemable
24:57
. You are loved . There is
24:59
nothing you can do in your
25:01
life . You're not saved by
25:03
your behavior . You can't lose
25:05
salvation because of your behavior
25:07
. You are saved because of
25:09
what Jesus Christ did at
25:12
the cross . Think about the
25:14
thief on the cross . He never
25:16
had any time to go to Bible study
25:18
or church or be baptized
25:20
. Jesus said tonight you
25:22
will be with me in paradise
25:24
. And then the beautiful
25:26
last words of Jesus it
25:29
is finished . Friends
25:32
, quit trying so
25:34
hard to please Jesus
25:36
. He's pleased with you
25:38
. Just rest in
25:40
the finished works of Jesus and
25:43
you will find out that
25:45
life is good , you're
25:48
smiling again and you feel
25:50
the purpose that God
25:52
is putting you .

26:38
. Ron will
26:40
be back in a minute to close out today's
26:42
show . We want to remind
26:45
you today of the last words of Jesus
26:47
it is finished
26:49
. What is finished ? The
26:51
finished work of Jesus refers to
26:53
the complete and final accomplishment
26:55
of salvation through His death and resurrection
26:58
. It means that Jesus has done
27:00
everything necessary for our forgiveness
27:03
, redemption and reconciliation
27:05
with God . Through His sacrifice
27:07
on the cross , jesus paid
27:09
the price for our sins once and
27:11
for all , providing total forgiveness
27:13
and cleansing . This finished
27:16
work of Jesus means that we no longer
27:18
need to strive or work to earn
27:20
God's favor or forgiveness . We
27:23
can rest in the assurance that our
27:25
salvation is secure and that we
27:27
are fully accepted by God because
27:30
of what Jesus has done for us
27:32
. Now back
27:34
to Ron .
