To understand the concept of where negotiation originates from, a deep dive into the etymology of the word itself might be necessary. The word negotiation derives from negotiacioun which means "dealing with people". When broken apart, the word negotiation take from the Latin, neg – “not”, otion – "leisure", which put together meant, back in the days, doing business. Therefore, negotiation can be defined as the identification of solutions by engagement in conversation.

Dealing with people, or negotiating as it is called since the fifteenth Century, happens all day long, every day and with everyone; includes people from all backgrounds, social status, age, gender and culture. Negotiating salary at work for a pay rise, where to get petrol – will it be enough for the journey home, so there will be no need to make a stop today – who will walk the dog today and who will wash the dishes. People have different methods of none professional negotiation, and sometimes, it all depends on the way they were brought up. Negotiating by shouting, tantrums, politeness, patience, are the methods that are learned during childhood. Without realising that negotiation is a way of dealing with everyday decisions there comes frustration in not getting what people want, arguments without understanding the principles of why there was a conflict in the first place and disappointments for lack of achievements due to lack of ability to provide a convincing argument to self. All can be omitted by the right negotiation tactics.

The older person gets, the smarter they think they need to behave, even though smarter does not mean wiser. Negotiation is, in some parts, the ability to ask a stupid and unreasonable question, as it cannot be foreseen hundred per cent what answers such question can deliver. If negotiation is not identified as a part of daily activity, part of life as we know it, cannot be successfully implemented to set the right balance in lives. What else is negotiation, if not a solution that delivers the right balance to all sides?
