James Thompson’s international career and research of traditional gardening systems has taken him from his home in the Shoalhaven to a diverse range of cultural situations including the highlands of east Africa and Ethiopia, the Al Hajar Mountain communities of Oman, the Nile River farms of Sudan and the Tonle Sap region of Cambodia. He was recently engaged by the government of Abu Dhabi to provide technical leadership in the development of sustainable agriculture systems in the oasis farms of the Bedouin communities of the Empty Quarter of the United Arab Emirates. These experiences combined with career and academic sojourns amongst the great gardens of the United Kingdom and Europe have given him a unique understanding of the essence of traditional garden design and an innovative approach to horticultural production.
