Hi and welcome to a bit of a
0:13
different episode of the official Getting Things Done
0:16
podcast. My name
0:18
is Morten Raveik and I'm here today with
0:20
my good friend and colleague Lars Scholzkill-Hendriksen. Privet
0:23
Lars. Privet
0:25
Morten, happy to be here.
0:29
Some of you will know that Morten and
0:31
I speak all the time when we record
0:33
our own podcast about GTD, but we've been
0:35
allowed to do a short takeover of this
0:37
podcast, mainly to talk about
0:39
the value of getting things done with others.
0:42
We are both GTD master trainers
0:44
in the Nordic region and have
0:46
a partnership in the company delivering
0:48
GTD and trainings here called vital
0:50
learning. We
0:52
wanted to dive into three different
0:55
topics today. Yes,
0:58
we would like to firstly talk about
1:00
the Getting Things Done summer camp of
1:02
2024, where you
1:05
can meet, network and create a relationship
1:07
with other GTDers to enhance your GTD
1:09
practice. And secondly, we
1:11
want to touch upon the new
1:13
book that is arriving sometime in
1:15
the period of March slash May
1:18
with David Allen and
1:21
Ed Lamont, who will
1:23
teach you about team getting things done
1:25
with others. And
1:27
thirdly, GTD connect membership where you
1:30
can meet people in forums, discuss
1:32
and learn and gain access to
1:34
the vast library of getting things
1:36
done, learning resources there. So
1:39
let's go to topic number one, Lars. Why
1:42
a summer camp? Yeah,
1:46
so this is something that we've been
1:48
doing in Denmark for a number of
1:50
years now. We've always
1:52
had quite an active GTD community
1:54
in Denmark, which has been a
1:56
lot of fun over the years.
1:59
And there was a wish to
2:01
connect more and to dive
2:03
more into the methodology and share tips
2:05
and tricks. And you know, as
2:08
we always say, GTD is one of the nicest
2:10
people in the world. And that really just shows
2:12
that this GTD summer camp, everyone
2:14
wants to chip in and help others
2:16
improve their own
2:19
GTD practice. So this started
2:21
as a request from the community. We
2:24
set it up, we had an organizing
2:26
group which has stayed on all of
2:28
the time. So big thanks to them.
2:30
We set it up the first time back
2:32
in September 2021, where we had rented
2:35
an observatory of all
2:38
places that I think the darkest place
2:40
in Denmark, really, because it was very
2:42
sort of strict limitations from the government
2:44
on how much light there could be,
2:46
which of course allowed for everyone to
2:48
really think higher horizons, look at the
2:50
stars and enjoy the scenery.
2:53
So we had a weekend there, had a
2:56
lot of fun sharing our tips
2:58
and tricks in GTD. And we
3:01
wanted to do more. So we set up
3:03
a new summer camp in 2022. We did
3:05
it in the summer instead. So we moved
3:07
it to June, found a
3:09
really nice place where we could be
3:12
close to the sea, nice
3:14
rooms for everyone in nice facilities
3:16
for presentations, a lot of room
3:18
for socializing with other GTDers. Just
3:22
next to the water, we could go for a swim. It was
3:25
great. And yeah, again, look at the
3:27
stars and the higher horizons was a
3:29
perfect analogy there. So
3:32
we repeated that in
3:34
2023. Same location.
3:37
Now we were up to about
3:39
45 participants. I think we're between
3:41
15 and 20 the first year.
3:43
And the fourth year will then
3:45
be this year, June 15
3:48
to 16, 2024. Same location.
3:50
So still here in Denmark, not
3:52
very close to the airport, but we
3:55
always figure it out when it comes
3:57
to transportation. So we'll get a ride
3:59
with me. or we'll figure out the
4:01
public transportation and pick everyone up. And that
4:03
usually works out nicely. And
4:06
it's just been growing. We hope
4:08
to be between 50 and 60 participants this
4:10
year. And we already have half
4:13
of those seats reserved by now. And
4:17
it's becoming even more global than we ever
4:19
thought. So initially it was actually more
4:21
global than we had thought. It started in
4:24
Denmark because we had such a significant community
4:26
here. But we had people flying in from
4:28
several countries. And this year it's even
4:30
several continents. It's North America, it's
4:32
South America, it's Asia, it's Europe.
4:34
There are really people coming
4:36
from all around the world now to just hang
4:39
out and enjoy the weekend.
4:41
And it's so
4:44
much fun. It's worth noting that
4:46
it's nonprofit for us. So we
4:48
always just negotiate a good deal
4:50
with the venue where we are
4:52
staying at. So we have
4:54
all the food and accommodation included. And
4:56
that's basically what you pay for. Martin
4:59
and I go there every year and we travel on our
5:02
own dime as well. So really
5:04
trying to minimize the cost to make sure
5:06
that this number cap is available for everyone.
5:09
And it is truly a nonprofit
5:11
that is nobody who has a
5:13
presentation or a
5:15
keynote there makes any
5:17
money on that. It's just a special service to
5:20
the community to help each other get better
5:23
at getting things done. For
5:26
those of you who are a little scared traveling
5:28
to Denmark feeling that, oh, well, I don't know
5:30
how to get to the venue and such, then
5:33
that is not a problem. Because when you do
5:35
your sign up, you will tell people, I need
5:37
help to get there. And there will be somebody
5:39
getting in touch with you to make sure that
5:41
you know how to get there. Either you will
5:43
be picked up, as Lars said, in a car.
5:46
Or we will show you how to
5:48
get there with public transport and maybe pick you up
5:50
closer to the venue. So that is not a problem.
5:54
One of the things that I think we should
5:56
now focus on is
5:58
the value of. Why would you go
6:01
and hang out with others
6:03
to learn getting things done, like
6:05
we do in the summer camp? For
6:10
me, the community is
6:12
really just enjoying that weekend
6:14
with other GCDers, other
6:16
like-minded people. Just
6:19
the companionship, a lot of nice
6:21
companionships have blossomed following
6:24
people that have attended the
6:26
summer camp. Of
6:28
course, the starting point is learning GCD or
6:30
becoming better GCDers. Most of them will be
6:32
seasoned GCDers, but there are new GCDers as
6:34
well, just to pick up and learn
6:36
more. The
6:39
vision for us when we organize it
6:41
is really that you leave extremely
6:43
inspired about your GCD practice and
6:45
to expand on that really about
6:47
life. To be honest, there
6:49
are so many fun stories
6:52
to share and so many things that
6:54
happened over those weekends. It's just the
6:57
inspiration and the people that show up. It
7:01
can be different attendees that will
7:03
then look at the way that I do things. Or have
7:05
you thought about this or maybe you can try this or
7:07
look at this checklist that I made. People
7:10
will know what you mean. These
7:12
are like-minded people. For me,
7:14
it's always an inspiration to spend that weekend
7:16
with them and share the reflection and
7:18
just have fun with the nicest people in the world. Well,
7:22
I will second that. One
7:27
of the things that's been really valuable for me is
7:32
part of this is to do a
7:34
walk and talk. During the
7:36
weekend, there will be a walk and talk
7:38
where you will partner up with some other
7:40
person there and you will walk
7:43
and just talk about whatever you want to. One
7:47
of the things that I'm looking forward
7:49
to is that walk
7:51
and talk. Because I've budded up with
7:54
Michael. Hi, Michael, if you're listening. He
7:57
and I are sharing our life at a very
7:59
deep level. We are
8:01
really opening up
8:03
our hearts and minds to the struggles we
8:05
have in life. And that is a very
8:08
valuable talk that I have with
8:10
Michael and he has second
8:12
that with me. And just
8:14
talk about everything that's heavy in life and that's
8:16
been good. Really
8:18
the higher horizons, what is bugging you, what
8:21
is not good. And I wouldn't
8:23
say that all people
8:25
will do that. What do you do Lars
8:27
when you do walk and talk? What's
8:31
been your value of the walk and talk? Well
8:33
it's been different
8:36
I think from year to year. I love
8:38
that this was always a part of the
8:40
summer camp because it's always so valuable to
8:42
have that one-on-one time. We actually set aside
8:44
a full hour we will in 2024 as
8:46
well to just have a walk
8:48
around on the beach. If the
8:51
weather permits Danish summer weather can be
8:54
varying let's say. But
8:56
we've been lucky for the most part to be
8:58
able to take these walks. And it's been
9:00
really different from year to year. I
9:02
think for me it's always interesting to
9:04
hear the different perspectives how GCD
9:07
is so universally applied no matter where
9:09
you come from. So
9:11
I had some nice walks with people
9:13
from halfway around the world and we
9:15
still have so much in common. And
9:18
it's always so interesting to hear how people have
9:20
used it and learned more about their lives and
9:22
how they have picked up GCD to help them
9:24
in their lives. But
9:26
it really can be different from person to
9:28
person what they benefit and how deeply they
9:30
go. I would also highlight the
9:33
GCD buddies, the GCD partnerships that
9:35
have blossomed from the summer camp.
9:37
It's been awesome. I
9:39
know people that it's been half
9:42
a year since last summer camp
9:44
where some people joined up
9:47
and they still do their weekly reviews
9:49
together online. Virtually just
9:51
sit there and do it together and share
9:54
how it went and reflections on
9:56
their weekly reviews. So it's a
9:58
really nice companionship and partnership. can
10:00
blossom from there. I know
10:02
there's a podcast, a very nice nerdy
10:04
podcast that was spotted by two people
10:06
that met at their
10:09
summer camp as well. Some
10:11
people have, I remember
10:13
especially one person sharing that she
10:15
had taken some things off
10:18
her someday maybe list and activated
10:20
some really big major life changes
10:23
that happened after the summer camp.
10:25
So just that time for reflection
10:28
and spending time
10:30
with like-minded people can actually make some really
10:32
significant changes in life. But
10:34
again it's very different. Some people ignore
10:36
action on their list, some people start
10:38
to look more at the higher horizons,
10:41
some people adjust different parts of their
10:43
workflow. It really
10:45
varies but the feedback that all that's
10:47
indeed had was that they always leave
10:49
inspired and that is again what we're
10:51
looking for. Indeed,
10:54
indeed. What
10:56
would you do Lars if you want
10:58
to learn more about the GTD summer
11:00
camp? Where would you ask people to
11:02
go? I would suggest
11:04
to go to gtdsummercamp.com,
11:08
all one word and that will redirect you to
11:10
the Danish Vital Learning website where we have
11:13
all of the information currently available at
11:15
the moment. The
11:17
program is still tentative, we always work on
11:19
this but we have a pretty
11:22
good idea of what we will be focusing
11:24
on this year. We established the
11:26
theme of the 2024 summer camp pretty early
11:28
on which is getting things done
11:32
together which again lines up nicely
11:35
with the team book coming out. So
11:38
what we intend to do is to focus
11:41
again on systems. We always
11:43
like to geek out on that. We have
11:46
played around with how much of the program
11:48
we should spend on these systems presentations and
11:50
sharing your systems for
11:52
those people that want to do that. We'll
11:55
keep that as well this year with the angle
11:57
of how do you then interact with others using
11:59
the online tools. in your GTD system. So I'll
12:01
be looking forward to that. We
12:04
are talking right now about having a deep
12:07
dive on some Microsoft tools and
12:09
how that works with Co-Pilot and
12:11
everything. Hopefully we
12:13
will have Ed Lamont joining us to
12:15
talk about the team book. David will
12:17
join us virtually already, said
12:20
to me that he will join
12:22
us. We have Thais from Brazil
12:25
talking about productivity and compassion and
12:27
yeah, so many cool things. We have
12:29
one attendee who is bringing his first draft
12:31
of a GTD board game. I
12:34
mean, that's just so cool. And
12:37
one last thing to mention, we always
12:39
do a weekly review together. So this is
12:41
a Saturday and a Sunday. We always have
12:43
a Sunday morning, we'll be a weekly review
12:46
together. And I don't know if you've ever
12:48
done a weekly review with 50 other people
12:50
in the same room together, but there's just
12:52
some kind of magical vibe that happens when
12:54
you do a weekly review there. So a
12:57
lot of fun and really hope to see you there. But
13:00
you can just hear, you can feel the tension
13:02
and the thinking in the room and so many
13:04
cool thoughts are happening right at that moment. Yeah,
13:09
so ggdsummercamp.com
13:11
for signing up and finding more
13:13
information about it. So we
13:16
hope to see you. So let's
13:18
move on to the- One thing that I did
13:20
not mention yet was one comment from Hans from
13:22
Germany last year, who said, I have
13:25
found my tribe. Yeah.
13:27
I just love that way of phrasing it
13:30
because it's a lot about companionship, especially with this
13:32
year's theme. And that was just so, yeah, such
13:34
a nice way to phrase it. Yeah,
13:37
so come join us and maybe
13:40
you also will find your tribe.
13:42
So good. I'm
13:44
sure. So let's move on
13:46
to the new book that is coming. David
13:50
Allen and his
13:52
partner in London or
13:54
one of his partners in London In
13:57
the next Action Associates, a company called
13:59
Ed Lamont. They were
14:01
written the Coroner book Together they
14:03
call it team getting things done
14:06
with others and the both you
14:08
and I have been granted access
14:10
to a preview copy of this
14:13
anthem. I've just started reading and
14:15
I am excited. Have you read
14:17
something similar is same as you
14:20
just the first chapter and and
14:22
really looking forward to diving more
14:25
into it? So yeah it's it's
14:27
Athletes at the top of my
14:29
reading. Thought it was. definitely looking forward
14:31
to to diving into that one. Online
14:34
to Serve Served With the
14:36
reason we are mentioning this
14:38
now the why this this
14:41
them. At all interesting to
14:43
talk about except that it is a
14:45
new book from David is that we've
14:47
boat lot both lost some I am
14:49
a hear this a lot where you
14:51
have a long you know family or
14:53
member who doesn't get getting things done
14:56
and how do I get them to
14:58
work with see how do I had
15:00
a do I give this to others
15:02
which is kind of like the whole
15:04
The Great from Holy Grail for lot
15:06
of people but now we have a
15:08
book that it will come out that
15:11
is addressing team. And
15:14
the team activities around getting things
15:17
done. How can a team get
15:19
things done using the methodology and
15:21
I think that is is a
15:23
valuable especially may be in companies
15:25
i'm an onshore that's your family
15:27
will be very happy as gave
15:29
them that book his team getting
15:31
things done that others may not
15:34
me were very and to sponsor
15:36
to join se ha. Young
15:39
bombing the last the spices it his
15:41
this is I am so not say
15:43
it is my. A gift ideas lists
15:46
for her that someone becoming. A
15:49
signed copy of the get of the
15:51
getting things a little versus as so
15:53
that. but we are looking forward to
15:56
say this because it is addressing something
15:58
that we've been are universally slab of
16:00
a how can I get my colleagues
16:02
to work like this? Not you know
16:04
and you have on department lead Aura
16:06
munching director thing. I would like my
16:09
company to do this: how can we
16:11
do this together and this is Sam
16:13
and I'm low hanging hanging fruit for
16:15
doing that. I'm
16:17
and that is and Bobby heard
16:20
the different things. I think amazon.com
16:22
says it comes in May. We've
16:24
heard that it's going to be
16:26
a big released in March by
16:28
from from the wrong companies and
16:31
David on himself. So we. For
16:33
not confusing people's up sometime sometime
16:36
between March and May that will
16:38
be a book of solve the
16:40
issue goes to go to amazon.com
16:42
and sorts for erm team getting
16:45
things done with others you can
16:47
and. Probably sign up
16:49
to get I'm. Ah,
16:51
an email when it's released.
16:54
I'm and now let's move on
16:57
to our third topic and to
16:59
Sydney due to the comic membership.
17:02
What is what is that you to
17:05
the connect lars. So.
17:07
Gtd Connect is the a member for
17:09
I'm Forty tedious all around the world
17:12
where they refer a very active forum
17:14
to discussing Gtd discussing the methodology, disgusting
17:16
different tools and tips and tricks. I'm
17:19
so many a valuable I'm posting their
17:21
an annual him for Twenty five Morton
17:23
in myself in there as well, sometimes
17:25
commenting on on different coasts and how
17:28
reflections and how we how we would
17:30
approach the different questions that that show
17:32
up in their I'm and the other
17:34
hand puppet. I would highlight is that
17:37
media. library at you already mentioned in
17:39
the beginning i'm so many resources in
17:41
there so valuable for me to diving
17:43
when i need to refine different paths
17:45
my practice or expand and so as
17:48
many other cheated years i started off
17:50
with a you know parts of the
17:52
city and started to build on that
17:54
and was just such a great supporting
17:56
resource in in improving the different aspects
17:59
of the city for myself. So I
18:01
think like the areas of focus, how would I
18:03
establish those? What might that look like? Well, there
18:06
is a video in there. There's a recording from
18:08
an old webinar where they will walk you through
18:10
that. My weekly review,
18:12
I'm struggling a bit with that. How could I do
18:14
that? Well, there's a guided weekly review, just sit on
18:16
in there and go through that. And there's just, you
18:19
know, I know this for myself. I know
18:21
this from many, many coaching clients that this
18:23
is just such a valuable resource. So highly
18:25
recommend a membership in the GTD. Indeed.
18:30
One of the things that I
18:32
really enjoyed there, as you mentioned,
18:34
just on my personal note, is
18:36
that the
18:39
forums where you can discuss and you can talk
18:41
and you can, you know,
18:43
exchange ideas that's been really valuable
18:45
for me. And as you mentioned,
18:47
the library of almost
18:50
anything that the David Allen
18:52
Company has ever made about getting things done
18:54
is in there. So if you need to
18:56
set up a tool, there's all the setup
18:58
guides are there for all the, you know,
19:01
to do and outlook and
19:03
one note and OmniFocus
19:06
and everything. So everything is in
19:08
there. And it
19:11
is really a good learning resource and
19:13
a way to hang out and learn
19:15
with others. So that
19:19
is basically what
19:23
we wanted to tell you today. We
19:26
hope that we have inspired you
19:28
to look into how you can
19:30
get things done together with other
19:32
people. And we
19:34
hope also that we will see
19:36
you in this year's GTD summer
19:38
camp, June 15 to 16 in
19:41
Denmark. Go to GTD
19:43
summer camp.com to sign up and
19:45
for have more information. And if
19:50
you want, you can in addition to the
19:52
official GTD podcast also
19:54
listen to Lars and me teach you
19:56
getting things done in our podcast, getting things
19:58
done from vital. learning. So
20:01
we hope that we have given you something
20:03
that is valuable and until
20:06
next time stay
20:08
safe and stay productive. Bye
20:10
bye. Bye everyone. you
