Hi there, it's Sue and thanks for joining me for Tips and Talk
0:08
Day. These are bite-sized topics that I pull from community questions
0:13
and things that I'm observing in the world of handmade small
0:16
business. If you'd like to submit a topic,
0:19
DM e over on Instagram at Gift Biz Unwrapped.
0:23
We've covered so many facets of a handmade product business over
0:28
the course of the years and today is no exception.
0:32
We've talked about how to start and grow your business stories
0:35
from many of you who have done just that. How to choose and use social media sites,
0:42
build your website. Oh my gosh,
0:45
there is just so much information here for you,
0:48
but not necessarily at your fingertips.
0:52
So I've made a tool for you that categorizes by topic
0:56
the episodes of this podcast, but only the ones that stay relevant over time because yes,
1:03
let's face it, there are past shows that just don't work anymore for us
1:07
today. The world is changing so fast,
1:10
right? You can use this tool to zero in on whatever
1:15
topic you need at the moment. Do you wanna hear from others in your specific industry?
1:21
How about details on Pinterest or setting up an email strategy?
1:26
You can now easily find the right episodes and create your
1:30
priority listening roster. Consider this your Gift Biz resource center at a glance.
1:36
It's a Google Sheet best viewable on your computer versus your
1:39
phone. Make sure to look on the bottom where there are
1:43
five separate sections for easy topic reference,
1:46
kind of like chapters of a book. It makes finding the shows to help you with what you're
1:51
working on right now, so much easier.

Congratulations. You've started your business maybe last week or perhaps years
2:10
ago. You were exhilarated when you made your first sale,
2:14
and from there the focus was on getting another sale and
2:18
then another one, and when that happens,
2:21
then you start thinking about how you can grow even faster
2:25
and bigger. Always looking at that next level.
2:29
The desire to stretch for more and more has been ingrained
2:32
in us over the decades. The thinking that bigger is better.
2:37
Bigger meal portions gives you more deliciousness to enjoy in the
2:41
moment, but you pay for it with your health and on
2:45
the scale. SUVs are great when you have a lot of kids to
2:49
cart around or for your camping and fishing weekends,
2:52
but there are a lot more costly to fuel up.
2:56
A big home sends the message that you've made it,
2:59
and I agree. It's really nice to have quiet spaces to sneak off to,
3:05
but they also come with higher prices,
3:07
more upkeep and other pressures,
3:11
big, bigger and then even bigger.
3:14
We've been told it's what we're supposed to do.
3:18
It seems to me these days we're being forced to finally
3:22
get it and back up a bit. Due to the rising costs,
3:26
portions are shrinking to keep the price the same.
3:29
We're rationing our driving or considering smaller vehicles to take into
3:34
count the costs of getting around, and I'm sure you can think of many more things that
3:39
apply to you where you're trimming back.
3:42
While it may feel like less initially,
3:45
it can actually make us happier and healthier to have less.
3:50
An article in life intelligence lists five areas that are improved
3:55
when we focus less on more and more on quality.
4:01
First, it increases independence,
4:03
confidence and comfort in being who we are,
4:07
I guess because you're focused on what's right in front of
4:10
you without comparing yourself to others.
4:13
Second, it increases focus on what you deem to be important
4:16
because you've eliminated many of the distractions.
4:20
This leads to richer experiences in both your personal and work
4:25
activity, and along these lines, there's a greater appreciation of the little things because you're calm
4:30
enough to be more attentive and observant.
4:33
This can also help with increased productivity because you're not multitasking
4:37
all the time. Four, eliminating these distractions and the continual jumping from one thing
4:44
to another improves your mental space,
4:47
a calmer mind, if you will, overall adding more minimalistic elements into your life decreases stress and
4:55
anxiety, which brings greater happiness and fulfillment.
5:00
Late last year after one of my talks,
5:03
I had a woman come up to the booth with some
5:05
questions. We got into this discussion about growing bigger.
5:09
She was feeling forced to do so by those around her
5:12
when actually she was perfectly happy just as she was.
5:17
Her business is producing a living salary.
5:20
She only has a couple of other people assisting her and
5:24
it integrates into other things she likes to do outside of
5:27
work, like spend time with her grandchildren and play golf,
5:31
but she felt like she was failing if she wasn't growing.
5:35
Hmm. Wonder where that idea came from.
5:37
Given all the outside influences of bigger is better when we
5:42
really got down to it. She just wanted confirmation that staying exactly the size she is
5:48
now is okay, really. She asked,
5:53
of course, I told her, that's the thing about your own business.
5:57
You can control it so that it's right for you.
6:00
I saw an immediate release of tension from her shoulders and
6:04
her face seemed to lighten up too. She thanked me over and over again before she left,
6:10
all because I gave her permission not to grow.
6:15
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying growing is bad.
6:18
If that's what you want. If you have certain financial goals to achieve so that you
6:23
can drop your nine to five, of course you need to build your business to a certain
6:27
level, you may be energized by continual growth year over year.
6:32
It's wonderful to have that energy and drive.
6:35
It's just not the only way.
6:38
Along this line of thinking, I thought it might be helpful to point out some of
6:43
the changes that can occur in your business When you grow.
6:46
The purpose is for you to think about how you'll manage
6:49
these changes, so you still love what you created based on your level
6:53
of growth. You don't want to accidentally grow your business into a burden
6:58
versus a joy, and don't underestimate this.
7:01
It happens when you first start a business as a maker.
7:05
It's because you love the act of making and doing more
7:10
of that and seeing others enjoy your products is a beautiful
7:13
vision. Reality is slightly different,
7:17
however, and by thinking ahead about how you'll manage the changes
7:22
or to what level you want your business to evolve can
7:25
keep it a business that you love. Here are six ways your role in your business may change.
7:32
First, the amount of production time goes up.
7:35
Of course, as orders increase, this is one unique facet of handmade.
7:40
The more sales, the more work you've created for yourself in making.
7:44
Not to mention the other parts of filling the order,
7:47
like invoicing, packaging, and shipping,
7:50
but at some point you'll reach a limit of how much
7:52
you can physically make on your own.
7:55
There's simply a hard stop to the hours available in a
7:59
day. This cuts off additional growth unless you,
8:03
and this is my second point, hire help to take some of the tasks off your plate.
8:09
When you hire people, even if it's only one person,
8:12
your role changes into a management position.
8:16
They take direction and guidance from you to do their job.
8:20
As you continue, leadership comes into play too.
8:23
You set the tone for the business that needs to be
8:26
communicated to your employees from the overall vision to how you
8:30
communicate with customers online, in a phone call and in person,
8:36
your day-to-day changes because they'll be questions and decisions to be
8:40
made and communicated to others for things you used to handle
8:44
yourself. Space also starts to become a consideration as you grow.
8:49
When orders are consistent, you need more product on hand to quickly produce and ship.
8:54
That means your stored inventory will increase actually with both your
8:59
product components and your finished pieces.
9:02
Product dependent, of course, this can creep into and overcome your personal space if you're
9:08
working from home. This increase in inventory and addition of staff necessitates you put
9:14
formal processes in place for tasks like payroll and inventory management.
9:19
It's beneficial to get this in place in the beginning so
9:23
it can grow with you without it being a huge project
9:26
down the road. Sustaining and continuing to grow will also require new methods.
9:31
Email marketing and use of social would be solid options to
9:35
put in place. And as you can see,
9:38
bringing all these things into your business takes up more of
9:41
your time and gets you farther away from your vision of
9:45
making. It's not a bad thing.
9:47
You're building up your business. I personally love the management and leadership role,
9:53
but it's not for everybody. As a spinoff of this fifth point to grow,
10:00
you'll want to add in multiple sales channels.
10:03
For example, some people do in-person shows and sell through their website.
10:08
Some have multiple websites like Shopify and Etsy,
10:12
some sell live inside Facebook and Instagram.
10:16
Having multiple sales points gets you visibility to different audiences,
10:21
so more potential for sales.
10:24
As you can see with all of this,
10:26
it becomes more intricate and complicated and amazing.
10:30
If it's what you love like I do,
10:33
but it's not for everyone, and that's the message.
10:37
Success of your business is defined by you and you alone.
10:42
If you need permission, like the woman I mentioned earlier,
10:45
gosh, I wish I could remember her name. I'm giving you permission now to build your business to great
10:52
heights. The peak being what feels best to fulfill you and
10:56
bring happiness, balance, and pleasure to your days because you're doing what you
11:01
love. That's a wrap.
11:05
I'm a get to the point kind of girl, and this is what you can expect from these quick midweek
11:10
sessions. Now it's your turn.
11:13
Go out and fulfill that dream of yours.
