Gion is one of Kyoto's most prominent historic districts and home to Japan's legendary geiko (geisha) and maiko (apprentice geisha). The main streets and narrow lanes are lined with classic Japanese restaurants, cafe or ochaya (the teahouses where maiko live during their apprenticeship years). If you walk through Gion right in the evening, you will get a chance to see maiko and geiko on their way to work.
