S2: E10 on Girlfriends Chat: Understanding the importance of ensuring your children see other children that looks like them in homeschooling with Amber Johnston.

Amber shares how her daughter's love of herself and the 'beautiful brown skin' she lives in was being crushed due to not seeing others who looked like her. How the lack of black/brown community was the catalyst to starting her local support group. And the importance of getting rid of 'worry' in your homeschooling journey.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Amber Johnston, A product of public education and daughter of two public school principals, Amber Johnston never expected to fall head over heels in love with homeschooling. Now a mother of four,

Amber champions home education, in general, and especially among black families. While closely aligning her curriculum to the principles of Charlotte Mason, she likes to say that in her home, “Charlotte Mason wears and afro" as she is committed to showering her children with affirming literature that celebrates all facets of their culture. Amber originally planned

to take homeschooling a year at a time, but she is now fully

entrenched and can’t imagine her family doing life any differently.

A large part of her family's home educating experience is involvement in a local support group Amber started in 2016 to build community among black homeschoolers in her area. When she's not busy running the group, she focuses on her home-based business, CafePhysique.com, while planning periodic worldschooling adventures around the world. In her

spare time, Amber enjoys walking in the woods, reading books, writing at HeritageMom.com, and catching up with friends - both old and new.
