Brenea Fairchild is an educator, homeschool mom, and the founder of The Melanin Village. A lifelong learner

and teacher, Brenaea is a career educator who worked in public schools and coached pre-service

teachers prior to launching The Melanin Village.

Brenea knew she wanted to homeschool after her culminating undergraduate research at Princeton

University highlighted the inaccurate portrayal of slavery and the Civil War in U.S. History textbooks.

This research, coupled with her experience in education and her admiration of her mentors who

homeschooled, fueled much of her desire to teach her children at home. The mother of two boys, one

of her greatest joys in homeschool is teaching world languages, and as a trilingual, Brenaea immerses

her children in both Spanish and French.

As Brenea became more involved in the homeschool community, she quickly realized the unique

challenges that black families face when homeschooling-including finding like-minded community,

access to accurate and quality curricula, and easy-to-digest information on evidence-based approaches

to teaching and learning. She created The Melanin Village with the hope to create a gathering space for

black and brown homeschoolers in which they can encourage, equip, and inspire one another to their

fullest homeschool potential.
