The Bhagava

0:29

Gita is a book of mankind's

0:31

collected experience of and answers to

0:34

life's most basic questions. Who

0:36

I am? From where do I come?

0:38

What is my purpose and destiny? And

0:40

most practically, how do I find happiness?

0:43

These podcasts originate in the lectures of

0:46

Neel Bhatt, a disciple of Swami Chinmayananda.

0:48

They are presented here in 20-30 minute

0:50

segments, each covering

0:52

three of the Gita's 701 verses.

0:55

Welcome to Gita Wisdom for daily

0:57

living. So we have been discussing

0:59

Chapter 9, Raja Vidya, Raja

1:02

Guha Yoga, Yoga

1:05

of royal knowledge

1:08

and royal secret, supreme

1:10

knowledge and supreme secret.

1:12

Swami Prabhavananda calls it

1:14

Yoga of Mysticism. Because

1:17

we are learning about the nature

1:19

of the supreme, who I am

1:22

is a secret. Even though

1:24

I know I exist, I

1:28

do not know what is the nature of my

1:30

being. I consider this

1:33

body to be me, my mind to

1:35

be me, the intellect to be me.

1:37

But when I ask question who I

1:39

am, it is very difficult to answer.

1:41

That is a secret. And this knowledge

1:44

which reveals that secret is the royal

1:46

knowledge. And Bhagavan,

1:49

so far has taught us in this chapter,

1:51

I, the

1:54

supreme reality, the

1:56

truth, the Sat, is

1:59

all-pervading. providing amni present

2:02

in my unmanifest form. But

2:05

you do see me in my manifest form

2:08

and all the things and beings

2:11

which are manifested, I

2:13

am not in them, but they are in me.

2:16

But in reality they are also not in me. So

2:18

we have basically, we have come to

2:21

that conundrum about where

2:23

is Bhagawan and what is my relationship. So

2:25

we have discussed that this chapter is about

2:28

the relationship of Jiva,

2:30

Jagat and Paramatma. Jiva

2:34

is I, the individual, I see

2:37

the world outside, the world of

2:39

plurality, the world of things and

2:41

beings and I have really determined

2:43

my relationship to that world as I am

2:47

island by myself and the world is out

2:49

there, it is something else. I have

2:51

to react with it, I have to react with it, I have

2:54

to deal with it. So that

2:56

is the dualistic relationship. I

2:58

and the world are two different

3:00

entities. When it comes

3:02

to Bhagawan, we don't even know what my

3:05

relationship is. But we

3:07

have inkling that he exists as

3:09

the creator of

3:11

both the Jagat and

3:14

I, the Jiva. And Bhagawan explained

3:16

in that statement which we just discussed

3:18

that this is a relationless relationship.

3:21

He says I am not in this

3:23

Jagat, but the

3:25

Jagat is in me. We have used

3:27

the metaphor or analogy of

3:30

snake and rope. Snake cannot

3:32

exist without the rope. The rope

3:34

is the reality, snake is the

3:36

illusion which I have created out

3:38

of my ignorance. From

3:41

Rope's perspective it was never in the snake,

3:44

but snake is in the rope. But

3:46

in reality the snake is also not in the rope.

3:48

In tropes, original nature,

3:51

there is no snake in it. Snake

3:54

is superimposed by my ignorance. So

3:57

the relationship of this Jagat, Jiva.

4:00

and Paramatma is like that

4:02

of a snake in a rope. Paramatma

4:04

remaining pristine and supreme, he

4:08

produces this Jagat out of his

4:10

maya. Therefore, he is

4:12

called mayapati. Supreme

4:15

plus maya is equal to

4:17

Ishwara. Ishwara is

4:19

the creator of this Jagat.

4:22

Bhagawan said, under my

4:24

supervision maya adyakshina prakruthim

4:26

suyate chara acharo. Under

4:30

my supervision, under my

4:32

watchful eye, prakruthim suyate chara

4:35

sends out all that is

4:38

moving and one moving. So

4:41

I am the producer of

4:45

this Jagat, but

4:47

through my maya. The

4:49

maya is the material cause,

4:51

Ishwara is the efficient cause. All

4:54

that I see is in effect. The

4:57

cause is Ishwara. The

4:59

cause is maya. Maya

5:02

provides the material just

5:05

like my ignorance provided the material for the

5:07

snake. And I saw the snake in

5:09

a rope. My

5:12

consciousness was the efficient cause

5:14

to see the snake, but

5:17

my ignorance provided the material to create

5:19

the snake. Same

5:21

way Bhagawan said, I,

5:23

the Supreme Being, is the

5:26

efficient cause of the Ishwara. Maya

5:29

provides the material cause to

5:31

produce this Jagat, this

5:33

world of plurality. And

5:36

then he proceeded to tell us

5:38

why people do not recognize his

5:40

presence while

5:43

we are reacting this way. People

5:46

fail to recognize my presence

5:49

when I am shrouded in

5:52

a human form or any animal

5:55

form or any plant form. I

5:57

do not see the divinity. the

6:00

presence of the supreme reality in it.

6:02

When I interact with people, I see

6:04

the people, but I don't see the supreme

6:07

functioning through that person. When

6:10

I see the wave, I see the wave,

6:12

but I don't see the ocean manifesting

6:15

through that wave.

6:17

And that's where we

6:19

fail to act in the right manner. So

6:22

the question is

6:24

asked universally. Why

6:27

Bhagawan being so divine

6:29

and so compassionate, all

6:32

loving can

6:34

allow evil to happen in this

6:36

world. Now, because of

6:38

the Ukraine war, the question is

6:40

more at the forefront of everything.

6:42

Why this is happening? Why

6:45

innocent people are dying? Why

6:47

this war? Why people act in this

6:49

manner? We

6:52

continue to say there is no answer

6:54

to it. Well, there is answer. Bhagawan

6:56

answered that question in verse number 12.

6:59

Bhagawan very clearly answered why

7:02

there is evil in this world. In

7:05

11 he said, people fail to see

7:07

the divinity in other people.

7:11

I fail to see that

7:13

all beings have the same

7:15

reality manifesting through them. So

7:18

I make them object. Any

7:21

person infecting harm to the other

7:23

person is to dehumanize

7:25

first. We can only

7:27

marginalize people when we don't consider

7:29

them to be as good

7:32

or as human as we are. So this

7:34

institution of slavery or any

7:37

kind of oppression or

7:40

tyranny can only happen

7:42

when one group of people see the

7:45

other group of people is

7:47

not equal to them, dehumanize

7:50

them. We are divine. We are

7:53

the chosen people. The others are not. Bhagawan

7:56

say, moga asa, moga karmana.

8:00

If you fail to see the divinity in

8:02

other things in beings, it

8:04

gives him the wrong idea, the

8:06

false idea. That

8:08

way we can inflict that pain

8:11

on the other person. When

8:13

the soldier is on the front line, he doesn't see

8:16

the other side. If the soldier is a human being,

8:18

he sees just nothing but an enemy, he has to

8:20

conquer. He objectifies that

8:22

person and therefore he

8:24

can act in that manner. That

8:27

he can kill that person without any remorse.

8:31

Same thing happens to the criminals, the same thing

8:33

happens to the dictators, the

8:35

same thing happens to the people who

8:37

act in an inappropriate manner in this

8:39

world. So by one saying, that

8:42

is the reason because they fail

8:44

to recognize my presence in all

8:46

things and beings with

8:48

their own hopes, their own

8:51

actions, they act like devil.

8:54

Their actions become demonic

8:58

and evil. So

9:00

the evil only happens when

9:03

people fail to recognize

9:05

the same divinity in other people.

9:07

So everyone answers that question. Evil

9:09

exists because of the ignorance of

9:12

people about the divinity's

9:15

omnipresence in all things and

9:17

beings. In contrast to

9:19

that, the Mahatma, the great

9:21

people, great souls

9:24

who recognized the

9:26

divinity in others, they constantly

9:28

think about me because

9:30

they realize nothing exists other than

9:33

that divinity. All names and

9:35

forms are his. Everything

9:37

I see is nothing but his presence and

9:39

therefore they act in a very different manner. They

9:42

constantly remember me. So

9:44

then we have seen the various ways people

9:46

worship the Lord. People

9:49

constantly thinking about the Lord, whatever

9:51

they do, they realize. And

9:54

then there is And

9:58

then there are others. who

10:00

by that spiritual knowledge, having

10:03

that knowledge, they

10:05

realize the unity in

10:07

diversity. And therefore,

10:10

they cannot act in

10:12

a wrong way. This is

10:14

the reason for acting

10:18

in a right way. And

10:20

the other one was ignorance was the reason

10:22

for them to act in an

10:24

evil way. And then Bhagawan

10:26

continues and says, I am in

10:28

everything that you see, not just

10:30

being. Don't misunderstand that I am

10:33

only deciding in the human beings

10:35

or sentient beings. Everything

10:38

that you do is nothing but me

10:40

alone. There is no other

10:43

existence rather than

10:45

my own existence. So

10:47

Bhagawan continued and said, I

10:50

am everything that makes Yajna

10:53

possible. The one who is

10:55

performing Yajna, the sacred fire,

10:58

which is there to receive

11:01

the oblation, the oblation itself.

11:03

Every activity that I perform, all

11:07

that requires for that activity, the actor,

11:11

the field of action and

11:13

the instrument of action is nothing Bhagawan

11:16

said but me. As

11:18

we discussed last time, it is like an

11:20

ice culture. Everything in the ice culture is

11:23

nothing but ice only. Bhagawan

11:26

has explained that these

11:28

are the various ways

11:30

people can recognize my

11:32

presence. Tapami aham varsam

11:36

nigru nami utsujamicha

11:39

amrutam ca evamrutya hacha sat

11:42

asacham arjuna So

11:45

using everything that is sentient, moving

11:48

and unmoving is me. Everything

11:51

that creates any activity is

11:53

also me. Now Bhagawan

11:55

says, all the phenomenal forces are

11:57

also me. Tapami aham. As

12:01

Sun, I hate this

12:03

world. We

12:05

know that we all came from Big

12:08

Bang, the world was not there, the universe

12:10

was not there, nothing but

12:13

singularity, it exploded into

12:15

Big Bang, then

12:18

galaxies were formed, then stars were formed,

12:20

the planets were formed, then

12:23

comes Earth, then life

12:25

ended with my existence. So

12:28

I can trace my existence all the

12:30

way down to the

12:32

Big Bang, but here Bhagawan said, if

12:34

you personify the Sun as

12:37

me, then I hate

12:39

this world. Tapam yaham, without

12:41

that heat we all will die of

12:44

earth. There is no energy on this

12:46

planet other than solar energy. Every

12:49

other energy we use is nothing but

12:51

two steps that remove solar energy. So

12:53

Bhagawan said, tapam yaham, I hate this

12:55

world, give life to this world. varsam

12:59

nigruhana me utrijamicha, also

13:03

I withhold and send

13:05

rain. So the phenomena of

13:08

heat and rain which is very

13:10

common to us, Bhagawan said that

13:12

nothing other than my own presence,

13:14

nothing other than my own self.

13:16

Amrutham ca eva bhutivachar, I am

13:19

the mortality, also the death.

13:23

So the two realities I know in

13:25

my life. My life

13:27

as I exist and

13:29

death, as somebody said, death

13:32

and taxes are the two sure things

13:34

in life. So death

13:36

is a reality, so

13:38

is my life. When I exist,

13:41

Bhagawan said, Amrutham, that which remains

13:43

after I die is immortality.

13:47

Something that does not change even

13:49

at my death is immortality. Bhagawan

13:52

said, I am that, but I am also

13:54

that which dies. That which

13:56

dies is my body. Bhagawan said, that's

13:58

also me. That which

14:00

I see as existence

14:02

is also me, that

14:05

which I see as non-existence is also me.

14:08

Sat a sat

14:10

chaham arjuna ha. Arjuna I

14:12

am Sat the truth that ever

14:14

existing entity. Sat is something which

14:17

exists in all three periods of

14:19

time, asked, present

14:21

and future. Or

14:24

you can say, Sat is

14:26

that existence which exists during

14:29

my sleeping, dreaming and

14:31

waking state. That

14:33

which remains constant in all throughout

14:36

this day is Sat. A

14:39

sat is that continuous to change. I

14:43

as a waker become dreamer, and

14:45

then I as a dreamer become

14:47

sleeper. And life continues. But

14:50

that changing entity by once

14:52

is also me, and

14:55

the unchanging entity is also

14:57

me. Sat is me, a

14:59

sat is me. Sat

15:02

is the cause for a

15:04

sat effect. A sat is

15:06

that which changes. That which has temporary

15:10

existence is asa. That which

15:12

exists temporarily is also me.

15:16

A sat is the cause for

15:18

this jagat, is also me. This

15:21

jagat is temporary, it continues

15:23

to change. It does not exist

15:25

in the same manner in two different

15:27

times. One of the

15:29

Greek philosophers says, you can step into the

15:32

same river twice. Because

15:34

as soon as you step in the river,

15:36

the water flows away. Next time you step

15:38

into it, there is different water. This

15:40

jagat is constantly changing. Therefore

15:42

it is asa, metya. And

15:45

the next two verses change the

15:47

meter. Most of the Bhagavad

15:49

Gita is an Anustubh chanda meter. And

15:52

several verses, Anustubh chanda, this

15:54

meter, which is longer meter.

15:58

The reason may be very obvious. that

16:00

Bhagavan wants to get some attention, he

16:02

uses a different meter, or

16:05

he wants to say something, pack

16:07

more words into that sloka. Therefore,

16:10

he uses a meter which packs more words into

16:12

it. One way or the other, it gets our

16:14

attention. So the

16:16

next two verses, Bhagavan describes

16:19

that, there is one way

16:21

we have discussed that this Maharmas worship

16:23

me, knowing fully

16:25

well that this

16:28

reality which we call

16:30

Supreme Being, Ishwara, Brahman is

16:32

one and the same, pervades

16:34

everything. However,

16:37

there are people who worship

16:39

me knowing that I am

16:41

Almighty and can fulfill

16:44

their desires. He

16:46

says that is perfectly okay. So

16:48

literal translation is, the Norse

16:51

of the three

16:53

Vedas, you have to continue to

16:56

make note that Bhagavan

16:58

Vaidhvara is only referring

17:17

to three Vedas or four Vedas.

17:21

But those who are the Norse of the

17:23

three Vedas, all these rituals

17:26

to achieve highest standard

17:28

of living is

17:31

in three Vedas. Although the rituals,

17:33

you want this, you have to

17:35

perform this, you want to achieve

17:37

Swargalok. Swargalok used to

17:39

be in Vedic period is the

17:41

highest destination. This is

17:43

what you are trying to achieve, Swargalok. From

17:47

this Muthiloga, three Vedas, those who

17:49

know these three Vedas, they

17:51

know exactly the instructions

17:54

and injunctions in three Vedas, Somapaha,

17:57

who have taken the Somapaha.

18:00

In other words, they have concluded all those

18:02

rituals and taken the prasad in the end.

18:05

This Sama is the prasad. Puta

18:07

Papa, they are purified

18:10

of this scene. So they

18:12

are good people working as

18:14

per the injunctions of this astral.

18:18

They have performed their actions. They

18:21

are purified of this scene. Yajnahe,

18:24

Istvas, Vargatim, Parsayanti, they

18:26

are worshipping Me through

18:29

Yajna to achieve Swarga. Swarga

18:31

is their goal. Te

18:34

punyam asad di surendra lokam

18:37

asnanti divyant divyadeva bhogan

18:39

achieving the divine loka

18:43

of Indra. They enjoy

18:46

the divine pleasures. So

18:49

all successful people in this

18:52

world, they fall in

18:54

that category. They have done everything

18:56

which is right. They have made all

18:58

the efforts. They have paid

19:01

their dues. They

19:04

had a goal in mind, this is what I want

19:06

to achieve. And they achieved it. And

19:09

they are enjoying the fruits

19:11

of their actions. People

19:13

like Bill Gates or

19:16

Elon Musk or Jeff

19:18

Bezos, which we can identify with

19:20

them. Every successful person can

19:23

vouch for it that that's how he

19:25

went to that Indra lok, which he

19:27

considered as his success by

19:29

working hard, following the rules,

19:32

completing all the tasks, achieving

19:34

what he wanted to achieve and he achieved that. But

19:38

then Bhagawan said, then what? So

19:40

the next verse says, te

19:43

tum bhaktva swargalokam vishalam

19:47

They are enjoying the

19:49

vast pleasures of

19:51

the swargalokam. As I

19:53

said, the goal was to achieve swargalokam. I

19:56

paid my dues. I did exactly

19:58

what's supposed to be done. Now I achieved

20:01

it. I am a successful person. Now

20:04

I am enjoying the fruits of

20:06

my success. Shineh

20:09

puni marsilokam vishanti. When

20:13

the punias are exhausted, the

20:16

efforts which I put in are

20:19

both fruits. But once

20:21

I get the fruits of my

20:23

actions, they are nullified. I

20:25

did something, I got paid. The account

20:28

is equal. When

20:30

that balance is exhausted

20:33

of my punya, of my actions,

20:36

marsilokam vishanti, I have to start all

20:38

over again. Just

20:40

think about it. All the successful

20:42

people who build their

20:44

empires, what will happen when

20:47

they die? They won't be able to take

20:49

anything with them. Bill Gates when he dies,

20:51

Jeff Bezos. So we know about

20:54

Bill Gates in Ilan Musk and Jeff Bezos

20:56

because we see them. What happened to Ford,

20:59

Rockefeller and Gettys of the

21:01

world? Could

21:03

they take anything with them? They are in their local

21:05

here. The Swargalokas are still here.

21:08

Their estates are there, their foundations are

21:10

there. Minas Kazin works

21:13

for the Rockefeller Foundation. He was

21:15

in CNN. Now they are helping

21:17

to change the world from fossil

21:19

fuel to renewable

21:21

energy. But the Rockefeller

21:23

who created the wealth, where is he? He

21:26

is not there to enjoy the wealth anymore.

21:30

Srinay puny marsilokam

21:32

vishanti, he goes to

21:34

the world of death. Evam

21:38

thrayedhiram anuprapana gata

21:40

gatam kam kamalabhante.

21:44

Those who follow the path

21:46

of just good actions. They

21:51

achieve what they want to achieve, but

21:54

they fall into the

21:56

path of coming and going.

22:00

hard for 50 weeks and take

22:02

to his vacation, enjoy

22:04

the vacation, come back and start work for

22:07

another 50 weeks. Same

22:09

way, all these people including

22:12

all of us who work very hard in our

22:15

life to be successful, we enjoy

22:17

that in the time

22:19

of death, that balance will be zero.

22:21

In the next life, we start all

22:24

over again from kg to primary

22:26

school to secondary school and all

22:28

over again. So Bhagavan said,

22:31

Teetham Bhaktva, Swargalokam, Vishalam,

22:34

Kshinaipune, Marthilokam Visanthi.

22:37

This is the result of just

22:39

doing good and

22:41

not thinking about your own self,

22:45

who I am and why I am working

22:47

so hard, what I am trying to achieve.

22:49

But what is doing good is

22:51

not good enough. It is something you

22:54

have to think about why I am doing good.

22:56

We will stop right here. Satyana
