Bestselling author J. Ryan Stradal discusses his newest novel, a family drama called The Lager Queen of Minnesota. It depicts how midwestern values, hard work, fate and some world-class beer helped a group of women succeed in a man’s world of beermaking.

Our host Ann Bocock sits down with J. Ryan Stradal to talk about the strong resilient women in his life and how his mother is a source of inspiration for his books. He also explains the misrepresentation of the Midwest in media and his goal to accurately portray his hometown.

While doing research for his novel, Stradal toured through Midwestern breweries and talks about the female brewmasters he met along the way. In addition to his family drama, Stradal wrote Kitchens of the Great Midwest and discusses the unifying role of food in his books.
