As one of the Top 20 Business Law Podcasts to listen to, call 760-784-9109 or email me from our contact page if you have a question. We’ll answer it on the show! Today, I have the pleasure of interviewing Mike Slater. He's a public personality who speaks on American values, an author, and a fellow entrepreneur. He is the host of “The Mike Slater Show” each weekday on AM 760 in San Diego and "True Story with Mike Slater" on The First TV Network. On his shows, Mike speaks to the Conservative heart by focusing on the five values that most inspire a virtuous life: curiosity, gratitude, hope, zest, and love. Where other talk hosts may use anger, frustration, and hopelessness to talk about current events, Slater tells stories that connect to eternal principles and conservative values. His passion is to speak for the Pro-Life movement at Pregnancy Resource Center events. Mike loves seeing men engage in the pro-life movement. Mike also speaks at churches about the importance of properly defined masculinity, and the role they are called to play in the pro-life movement. Mike is the author of How To Change Someone’s Mind and the children's book Imagine Jack and the History Kids. It's time for me to bring you another sidebar. Today we are going to be talking about how to stay compliant with the law. So what do I mean by that and why would anybody want to incorporate their business? Answer… to protect your personal assets! If you’re a sole proprietor and you are running a business, you're not listed with any state government. You haven't registered your business with them. It doesn't provide you any legal protection. As one of the Top 20 Business Law Podcasts to listen to, call 760-784-9109 or email me from our contact page if you have a question. We’ll answer it on the show! The last sidebar we left off with was where I provided you with a pretty good definition of what a startup is. Now, what do you need to do in order to actually start your business on the right legal foot? Well, you have options. You actually need to incorporate your business. Why incorporate your business? It's a good question. People pay thousands of dollars, go to attorneys for this exact same advice. I'm offering this advice to you today because I love helping entrepreneurs. I love helping people get their dream started. Don't just sit there and dream about it. Actually, do it. Let's put a plan in place so you can become successful at what you are doing, which is, you're going to start a business. So what legal entity should you be? That's a very good question. Why should incorporate it? When choosing the business entity, you should consider the following. Keep in mind, before you go down this road, you have to have some sort of plan. I doubt that you go on vacation without a plan, right? You probably spend months and months working with a travel agent to secure the right lodging, to secure the right attractions, to secure the right tickets. Well, the same thing with your business. This business is going to be your baby. You don't just start it and leave it in the middle of the road and hope and pray that it doesn't get hit. So you have to have some sort of plan. You have to have a business plan. I know business plans might have a bad rap, but I've actually got the perfect business plan for you. It's on the website GoLegalYourself.com and you can purchase the business plan right there and start using it today. If you do not have a business plan, at least start one. Start getting your thoughts on paper because when you see them, they become real. So on our next. Sidebar, I'll be going into some of the most common legal entities that are out there. And eventually which one would be the right one for you. I look forward to chatting with you soon. P.S. As one of the Top 20 Business Law Podcasts to listen to, call 760-784-9109 or email me from our contact page if you have a question. We’ll answer it on the show! My sidebar today is going to be about the first phase of your Business Legal Life Cycle, the Startup Phase. Here are a few quotes I want to share with you, which I think are so perfect when it comes to explaining what a Startup is. A business is a lot like jumping out of a plane and assembling the parachute on the way down. The critical ingredient is getting off your butt and doing something. It's as simple as that. A lot of people have ideas, but there are few who decide to do something with those ideas NOW, not tomorrow, not next week, but today. “The true entrepreneur is a doer, not a dreamer.” ~ Nolan Bushnell That really sums up the startup. If you have an idea, why are you waiting? I'm bringing this sidebar to you today because I wanted to share with you how business is so similar to the game of chess. If you get a chance to read any basic literature about chess, the simplest definition you will find is that it is a game of strategy and tactics. To know the legal ins and outs, you don't have to go to law school for that. I already went to law school for you. And so I'll be happy to discuss those on future episodes of the sidebar, but for now, consider your business as if you are playing a game of chess. As one of the Top 20 Business Law Podcasts to listen to, call 760-784-9109 or email me from our contact page if you have a question. We’ll answer it on the show! When it comes to pitching business reporters, Falk says you have to think like one of them. “The reporter is thinking, ‘What does my audience care about?’ Whether it's readers or listeners or viewers, what they care about is saving time, saving money, and making money.”   Taken a step further, you should employ the basic tool in the reporter’s kit: The Five W’s. WHO do you want to read the story?  WHAT  do you want that person to think about and do? Use your service, buy your product, go to your website, visit your location, make a phone call? WHEN is the information timely? WHERE should the news appear -- in the general news or a special interest platform? WHY should anyone care about what you have to say? How does your insight, product, service help an individual, a business owner, or a company to save time, save money, or make more money. Other tactics Faulk considers indispensable for attracting business, growing audience, getting a favorable message out:  Networking: Align yourself with like-minded groups.  Develop a media profile: It’s not your bio or CV, but it's very tailored to the interests of the five W's. Give your contact information, three to five sentences that broadly describe your background and what it is that you do, then you have three to five bullet points that are more specific about the kinds of services that you provide. Think about three to five issues or hot topics that people really need to know more about. The last part is a quote, something about 50 words that gives an idea of what it would be like for the reporter to talk to you. Have a web presence: When the visitor comes to the website, they should feel that there's a connection and that the person understands what is their situation, what is their problem, and that this is the solution. Your LinkedIn profile confirms you are the person that you say you are.  Have a newsletter.  Falk is offering listeners 20 minutes of consultation and guidance on your media profile absolutely free, so be sure to check her website. Call 760-784-9109 or leave us an audio message from our website and we’ll answer it on the show!  When disaster strikes — jobs are lost, businesses go under, careers stall — some brave entrepreneurial souls seize the opportunity to start their own new enterprises. So it was after the 2008 crash, which is when the Queen of Business Law boldly started her private practice. And so it is and shall be in the COVID era, according to Kelly’s guest Robert Hanna, a London-based legal recruiter whose current mission is to help people in that profession navigate these troubled times and come out the other side successfully. “I know for a fact that we're going to have some great innovations that come out of this whole COVID-19, once it's over and done with,” Kelly says. She even wrote a blog post on the topic and, of course, her legal practice is geared toward small businesses, so she can help make it happen.  As a self-described recruiter-entrepreneur-investor-podcaster, Robert Hanna advises companies and firms how to grow, diversify, or consolidate their market-share. He advises individuals on career moves and business development. His own company, Kissoon Carr, is a case in point. He started out with ambitions of global domination but found success by drilling deeper into his niche-within-a-niche and developing as a right-sized boutique agency. Hanna’s Legally Speaking podcast has a global reach and provides the international legal community with topical information and advice. His professional services and podcast subject matter merge when he does an episode on an urgent issue like diversity inclusion in the legal field. Podcasting helps his company stand out. “At the moment, any business needs to be producing quality content to their niche market audiences,” Hanna says. “It's not enough just to be a sort of reactive service. I think you have to proactively give to your marketplace to build a brand, to be known as thought leaders, and to be seen as people that are really trying to do more.” Also, if you already haven’t, get your FREE copy of my eBook Go Legal Yourself when you get my Go Legal Yourself app from your Apple App Store or Android App Store. Call 760-784-9109 or email me from our contact page if you have a question. We’ll answer it on the show!  My guest is Dave Bone, CEO of San Diego Flooring Pros. Dave is a third-generation flooring pro. For years he worked in his family business in his home town, then for other companies in San Diego, and finally decided to go into business himself.  He knew everything there was to know about selling and installing flooring but needed support in setting up a solo business. In the interview, he discusses the key planks of his success in creating a nimble, lean, and successful company that provides hands-on, personal, custom service to clients: He worked with a super business attorney (hey, hey!) who says: “The number one thing that any business needs to do, especially when they're starting out, is to make sure that they're starting on a solid legal foundation.” Critical first step: He incorporated his business, which (A) protects his assets, and (B) qualified him for Covid stimulus money. He put together a team of experts: business attorney, CPA, marketer, and business coach Kathy Nelson, who was featured in episode 33 of this podcast. Another key piece of the puzzle is the software he uses to organize everything from his initial contact leads to purchase orders and bookkeeping. Listen to the whole interview to learn more about going into business for yourself — with the right kind of professional help. We’ll answer it on the show!  Many small business owners are great with ideas and execution for the products or services they provide, but maybe not so expert on the equally important financial and operational sides of things. That’s because managing a business is complex, and usually requires a separate mindset and skillset from the core business. It’s easy for busy people to get lost in the weeds, and lose sight of — or never even envision — the big picture. That’s where Jessica Hornbeck comes in. Her company, Big Picture Results, provides outsourced CFO, and COO services that enable small businesses to deploy best practices that increase efficiency, profitability, and sustainability.  Best practices start with tight bookkeeping, which provides a platform for addressing different aspects of financial management that could result in growth by capitalization through small business loans or soliciting investors. Hornbeck’s services also include valuation, in case an offer to sell comes along, as well as strategies for weathering the rainy day storms of the COVID era. Her company’s website, bigpicresults.com is a font of timely and relevant information.  Listeners will take inspiration, as the Queen did, from Hornbeck’s own bootstraps story, and gain confidence from her background working for major financial institutions.  Also, if you already haven’t, get your FREE copy of my eBook Go Legal Yourself when you get my Go Legal Yourself app from your Apple App Store or Android App Store. Call 760-784-9109 or email me from our contact page if you have a question. We’ll answer it on the show!  My guest is Jesse Morgan, an inventor, and manufacturer who helps other inventors take their ideas to market. After a near-fatal car accident, Jesse invented The Extractor Tool, for cutting yourself free of a seatbelt and smashing open the car window.   He also invented the Ortho-O-Grip, which goes around the handle of everyday utensils and tools to make them easier to grip for those who have arthritis or other conditions that make it hard to handle things. Morgan also makes and sells products he licenses from other inventors, and he’s generous with mentoring advice for how to take ideas from the drawing board to production to sales.  The big takeaway for inventors: He strongly recommends licensing your product rather than incurring the expenses associated with making and marketing it yourself.  Get your copy of the Go Legal Yourself eBook FREE when you get the APP from your APP Store and also get my latest book “Go Own Yourself” which is available on Amazon from this link. We’ll answer it on the show!  Today I have the pleasure of interviewing Alexandra Renee Poelstra, the CEO at ALL MAVEN, a full-service branding and digital marketing agency. You’re probably asking yourself, “what’s a maven?” Alex tells her story and how she became known as “the maven.” Like many young people starting out in life, attending many schools and programs to advance herself in her profession, the one thing that kept her going she says was and is her “faith.” Alex talks about the struggles she’s had in starting her business. Alex says, being a monster-preneur and at the end of the day, her number one challenge is staying focused on one thing. We’ll answer it on the show!  Today I’m talking with Bhavin Mehta, the CEO and Founder of Fusion Factor Corporation, which specializes in helping small businesses become successful by leaving them to focus on their work and business while Fusion Factor focuses on solving their IT (information technology) problems. The three challenges facing Bhavin when he started his business, not uncommon for most entrepreneurs starting out: Acquiring new clients Having the right agreements and contracts in place Executing his marketing We discuss the importance of having the right contracts and agreements in place to protect yourself from litigation and lawsuits. Bhavin reached his first milestone when he hired his first employee, requiring him to put in place the right legal documents, employee manuals, etc.  About marketing when starting your business, Bhavin advises us to be on the internet, social media, and practice good SEO (search engine optimization) on your website. Also beneficial are to have testimonials, and for a business like his, be physically centralized to easily gain access to your clients.  Bhavin’s guide “What Every Business Owner Must Know About Hiring An Honest, Competent, Responsive and Fairly Priced Computer Consultant” is freely available on his website FusionFactor.com. Finally, I ask Bhavin… knowing what you now know, what would you do differently? Not surprisingly, he answers “I’d get my solid contracts in place early, and hire an attorney to understand the legality of what I can and cannot do.” Get your copy of the Go Legal Yourself eBook FREE when you get the APP from your APP Store and also get my latest book “Go Own Yourself” which is available on Amazon from this link. Call 760-784-9109 or email me from our contact page if you have a question. We’ll answer it on the show!  Today I have the pleasure of talking with Sophia Felix, the Founder of HBM Talent & Management. Sophia tells us why she took the path of entrepreneurship in the Talent Management Industry and as a self-made woman how she was able to build her reputation and business. At 19 Sophia worked at the Department Of Defense and was in charge of managing multimillion-dollar contracts where she learned most of her business skills and went on to have 5 mentorships in her career. I asked Sophia “How do you get recognized?”When I’m looking for talent, I look for: their energy; their ambition; and their heart. It’s also how you present yourself. I’m professional at all times. If I’m in a business meeting, I always dress professionally, which helps me to stand out and show people who I am, and they’ll remember me. I’m also a woman of my word. I have faith in my clients and what I do.  I look for those people that have that energy and charisma. I can make them look good and brand them, but if they don’t have that ambition, that heart, it’s a waste of time. Sophia walks us through an example of how she might help a clothing company and gives us advice on entering into the marketing world - and the importance of self-care. I quote myself here by saying, “Why blend in when you were born to ‘stand out’.” Sophia takes her clients through several “game-changing” exercises to help them “dream big” no matter how big their dream is. As usual with all my guests, I asked Sophia, what she now knows, what would she do differently when she was just starting out. Her answer may NOT surprise you. Sophia loves to create opportunities with her business to help others - especially for charities and children in need. With this, she steps up in her community to make a difference.  Some of Sophia’s Charities Southern California’s Chapter President of America's Children of Fallen Heros. Co-founder and President for the International Cannabis Business Women’s Association.  Get your copy of the Go Legal Yourself eBook FREE when you get the APP from your APP Store and also get my latest book “Go Own Yourself” which is available on Amazon from this link.
