We find out how Andy Jones changed the ending of this story, based on a traditional Newfoundland fairy tale. Andy Jones, along with Philip Dinn, adapted this version of this story from one they learned from the telling of Mrs. Elizabeth Brewer.

Illustrator Denise Gallagher refers to the Newfoundland ugly stick, which is a newer addition to the province’s traditional instruments. To some, it is considered a new tradition and is making its appearance at the province’s mummering festival each year. If you’d like to know more, click here.
