0:37
16 episodes from our Growing Up
0:39
Powerful series. These are stories
0:42
about dealing with big feelings, growing up
0:44
and connecting to the world around you.
0:47
And just so you know, some of these themes
0:49
may be mature for our younger Rebels. We
0:52
encourage listening with your grown-up. We
0:54
hope you enjoy, and now, episode 14
0:57
of Growing Up Powerful. Right
0:59
in our own backyard. Welcome
1:05
to Growing Up Powerful with Rebel
1:07
Girls. I'm Justine. And
1:10
I'm Asha. And we're two best friends trying
1:12
to figure out this thing called life. Welcome
1:22
to the Growing Up Powerful Rebel
1:25
News Flash with your hosts... Asha.
1:28
And Justine. Today in
1:30
Rebel News, Justine successfully made
1:32
chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast.
1:35
I did. And Asha got
1:37
her personal record on the 100-yard
1:39
dash in track. True
1:41
story, the Earth kept spinning around the
1:43
sun at about 67,000 miles per hour.
1:47
And I bet there's a new Rebel
1:50
being born right now. Yes. Isn't
1:56
it wild to think of all the things
1:58
happening in this one day all around? on
2:00
the world? Well, the world's a big place.
2:03
Fun fact, did you know that it
2:05
takes two hundred twenty six million three
2:07
hundred seventy two thousand seven hundred twenty
2:09
seven point three bananas to measure the
2:11
circumference of the earth? I did not
2:14
know that. Also, eight hundred forty billion
2:16
four hundred thirty seven million four hundred
2:18
seventy one thousand nine hundred and ten
2:20
bananas to go from the earth to
2:22
the sun? I feel like that one's
2:24
hard to fact check. And of course
2:27
fifty three six billion four hundred forty
2:29
two quintillion forty eight quadrillion eight hundred
2:31
eighteen trillion one hundred eighty one
2:33
billion eight hundred sixty million bananas
2:35
to cover the entire Milky Way?
2:37
Of course! Well that
2:39
one everybody knows. Which is
2:41
all to say the universe is a mighty
2:44
big place. And yet
2:46
we all live under the same sky, the
2:49
same sun, moon, and stars. I
2:52
feel like there are more and more ways that we
2:54
can affect each other and make this world a better
2:56
place. I totally agree. At
2:58
the same time, I hear
3:01
about people like Malala and Greta and
3:03
I'm like, whoa, I wish
3:05
I could be as courageous as they are. Definitely.
3:08
So my personal opinion is that
3:11
Malala and Greta are super amazing.
3:13
But we're super amazing
3:15
too. Facts. We can
3:17
still make a big impact. Even if
3:19
we're not starting a global movement or
3:22
seeking in front of the United Nations
3:24
yet. True. Even
3:27
the smallest act of kindness
3:29
can ripple out to help
3:31
so many people. Exactly. So
3:33
for this episode, we're going
3:35
to share stories about people
3:37
creating positive change right in
3:39
their own backyard. Or by
3:41
the shore. Maybe even in
3:43
their own home. Don't give
3:45
it away. Okay. Let's
3:47
go. Listen,
3:53
we've all had our embarrassing BO moments.
3:55
Am I right? I want
3:57
to be my friend's girl down here. How
4:00

5:24
See rebels. Once
5:40
upon a time there was a girl
5:42
who love. Swimming
5:44
in the South Seas, we've
5:46
been saving for the smooth
5:48
as South's. Marrying her toes in
5:50
the warm san, she only really got
5:52
to visit the shore during the summer
5:54
when she visited her cousin. Was
5:57
only to see that week. for
5:59
year chasing hermit crabs
6:01
and racing to the ice cream truck every
6:04
afternoon. Mmm. I can
6:06
almost smell that, Mrs. Gulls. That's
6:08
sunscreen. Right? So
6:10
one day, this girl and her cousins were
6:13
climbing on these rocks by the shoreline and
6:15
there were these clouds of thick
6:18
algae that kept getting closer and
6:20
closer. Ugh. And then,
6:22
they noticed there were a lot of ice
6:25
cream wrappers and hair ties that
6:27
were washing up with the tide
6:29
too. Gross. So I was... I
6:32
mean, this girl was just like, why
6:35
don't we grab a big garbage bag
6:37
and take a beach walk and pick up
6:40
whatever trash we find? Nice. Yeah.
6:42
And then, one of the cousins made
6:44
it into a contest to see who
6:46
could pick up the most trash. And
6:48
we found so much stuff. Hair
6:52
ties, wrappers, deflated balloons.
6:55
Once, we even found a pillow. It
6:58
became this yearly thing that we do. And
7:00
now, everybody gets their own garbage bag
7:02
and tries to collect the most stuff.
7:04
That's so fun. We wear gloves, of
7:06
course. Oops. I mean,
7:08
they. Not we. Is this
7:11
Rebel you, Asha? Umm,
7:13
yeah. I love it. Okay.
7:15
Your turn. Okay. Once
7:19
upon a time, there was a young Rebel who
7:21
was scared
7:23
of old people. Oh, dear.
7:26
Okay. Maybe not scared. But
7:28
just kind of nervous about not
7:31
knowing what to say or not
7:33
really having anything in common. No judgment. But
7:36
unfortunately, her mom
7:38
worked at a nursing home. Oh, wow. Yeah.
7:43
So, when it was
7:45
Bring Your Kid to Work Day, this Rebel
7:47
was like, No way, no how, no thank
7:49
you. Okay. Understandable. But then,
7:51
one summer, when her best friend
7:54
was at the shore with cousins,
7:57
Oh, so this
7:59
is my fault? This young rebel had
8:01
nothing to do, and her mom
8:03
was like, you're coming with me to
8:05
work, and you can help me stuff
8:07
envelopes, and we'll get Italian ices and
8:09
Nikki's pizzeria afterwards. This is actually a
8:11
really great deal. Yeah.
8:15
So, this rebel was not that sweet.
8:18
But she didn't really have another choice because she
8:20
was nine years old at the time, and lots
8:23
of people were away or at camp, and
8:25
she couldn't stay home by herself. But
8:27
whatever. She was kind of shaking
8:29
and sweating the whole way to the nursing home.
8:32
And the first thing she saw when she walked in
8:35
was an old lady, kind
8:37
of moaning and talking to herself in
8:39
the lobby. Oh, wow. And then the
8:41
lady took her walker and followed this
8:43
rebel down the hallway, saying
8:46
things like, so tall,
8:49
like a lamppost. I
8:51
was never that tall, was I? Oh,
8:55
my goodness. Was
8:57
this rebel freaking out? Definitely.
9:01
But you know what? This rebel
9:03
took some deep breaths and said
9:05
hello to the lady, and they
9:07
wound up becoming really good friends. No
9:10
way. Real? Yeah. Her
9:14
name is Ursula Lecter, and we actually became
9:16
pen pals after that day. Oh,
9:18
that's awesome. She was originally from
9:21
Estonia, I think. She still
9:23
writes me stories about her childhood, and I tell
9:25
her whatever was going on at school. It's
9:28
really fun. When she turned 93 years
9:30
old last year at her birthday party,
9:32
she had two huge pieces of chocolate
9:34
cake and made us some show tunes.
9:37
Okay, she's now my favorite person
9:39
ever. Besides you, of course.
9:42
Thanks. It maybe wasn't
9:44
the most rebel thing to do. It totally
9:47
was. Facing your fears
9:49
and connecting with people. Giving
9:51
someone friendship and support? I
9:54
definitely call that rebel. Yeah. Okay.
9:58
I do too. So
10:04
rebels we want to invite you
