William Ramsey of Procter & Gamble wanted to test a new show for American housewives and gave the green light to Sandra Michael to create Against the Storm. She began writing the script on September 3, 1939, the day that Great Britain declared war on Germany. As a pacifist and staunch anti-Nazi, this event had a great effect on the subject matter and ways in which Against the Storm was written. Michael also wanted to present the show "as if housewives were intelligent" rather than what she considered the formulaic droll of common soap operas. The show was a hit with critics and won the Peabody Award in 1942.
The program pivoted around the activities of Professor Jason McKinley Allen (who taught classes at the fictional Harper University), his wife, daughters, and friends. Allen, who lived in Hawthorne, Connecticut, at Deep Pool Farm.
