2:27

A triple shooting incident in Windsor last

2:29

week led to the tragic deaths of 66

2:31

year old Susan Denise Arnold and

2:33

64 year old Michael Alan Avalos.

2:35

The incident occurred at a residence on Kendall

2:37

Park Drive. The suspect, identified

2:40

as 35 year old Cody Donovan Jones,

2:42

was also wounded during the event and is presently

2:44

in hospital care while under guard.

2:47

The Carroll County Sheriff's Office has not revealed

2:49

the nature of the relationship between Jones

2:51

and the Avalos. Upon discharge

2:53

from the hospital, Jones will be charged with two

2:55

counts of malice murder, as stated by Major

2:57

Todd Druce. A

3:00

dog in Lawrenceville was bitten by a rabid

3:02

raccoon on February 8th, leading to

3:04

public cautions issued by the Gwinnett County

3:06

Animal Welfare and Enforcement and

3:08

the Gwinnett County Health Department. Residents

3:10

are being urged to exercise vigilance around

3:12

animals displaying unusual behavior,

3:14

as diseases such as rabies can be transmitted

3:17

via bites or scratches. The rabies

3:19

virus, which is typically fatal if not treated,

3:21

targets the central nervous system. Initial

3:24

symptoms may include fever, headache, weakness,

3:26

and discomfort. In the event of a bite or

3:28

scratch, immediate medical attention should

3:30

be sought, and both the Gwinnett County Health

3:32

Department and animal welfare and

3:34

enforcement should be notified. Pet owners

3:37

are also being advised to ensure their pets have

3:39

received their rabies vaccinations to prevent

3:41

the disease's spread. Unvaccinated

3:43

pets that have been exposed to rabid animals

3:45

could be subjected to stringent quarantine

3:47

protocols. Cheyenne

3:50

Bogle, of Snellville, is among the latest graduates

3:52

of Georgia's juvenile correctional Officer

3:54

cadet training program. Bogle and 38

3:57

other cadets were honored at a recent ceremony

3:59

held at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center

4:01

in Forsyth. These newly minted officers

4:03

are set to join the Department of Juvenile

4:05

Justice, taking up assignments at facilities

4:08

throughout the state. Their role will be to ensure

4:10

a secure environment conducive to the rehabilitation

4:12

of youth offenders. The cadets had to complete

4:15

an intensive training program, which involved

4:17

200 hours of instruction in security

4:19

protocols and procedures, as well as

4:21

written examinations to verify their proficiency.

4:23

The Department of Juvenile Justice oversees

4:26

15 secure youth correctional facilities

4:28

located in various counties across Georgia.

5:18

Governor Brian Kemp of Georgia has

5:21

ordered the state's National Guard to send additional

5:23

troops to the U.S. southern border as part

5:25

of Operation Lone Star, an initiative

5:28

aimed at curtailing illegal immigration

5:30

ensuring public safety. This directive

5:32

comes on the heels of Kemp's fifth visit

5:34

to the border earlier this month, where he received

5:36

a comprehensive briefing regarding the ongoing

5:38

crisis. Since 2019, Georgia

5:40

has maintained a consistent presence at the.

5:43

Border. The newly deployed troops will be tasked

5:45

with establishing a forward command post in

5:47

Texas. Both the Senate and House of

5:49

Georgia have passed resolutions expressing

5:51

their continued support for the mission in Texas.

5:53

The decision arrives in the wake of a sharp

5:56

increase in illegal immigration, with more

5:58

than 8.5 million immigrants having

6:00

crossed the border since President Biden assumed

6:02

office. Despite significant drug seizures

6:04

attributed to Operation Lone Star, the influx

6:07

of migrants poses considerable challenges

6:09

for the states involved. Sara

6:12

Araya, a first year medical student hailing

6:14

from Lawrenceville and currently studying at Paycom

6:16

of South Georgia, has been chosen as a

6:19

scholar in the Medical Student Scholars for

6:21

Health Equity in Myeloma program.

6:23

The initiative is a collaborative effort between

6:25

the International Myeloma Foundation and

6:27

the W Montague Cobb NMR

6:29

Health Institute, designed to alleviate health

6:31

disparities by teaming up minority medical

6:34

students with experts in myeloma

6:36

for research focus on health equity.

6:38

Araya, who is a first generation American,

6:40

has expressed a strong interest in serving

6:42

marginalized communities. Her research

6:44

will concentrate on multiple myeloma,

6:46

with a particular emphasis on its higher

6:49

prevalence among individuals of color,

6:51

Anaya's prior experiences at a medical

6:53

assistant, and her tenure as a histo

6:55

technologist at Children's Health Care of Atlanta

6:57

have equipped her well for this endeavor.

6:59

She places a high value on cultural

7:02

and linguistic proficiency in patient

7:04

care, and is eager to provide her services

7:06

to underserved populations. Araya

7:08

selected Peckham, South Georgia for

7:10

her studies. Due to the support of atmosphere

7:12

it offers and the opportunities it presents

7:14

to serve rural communities. The

7:17

Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center

7:20

Atrium is hosting the 2024 Black

7:22

History Month exhibit, which is open to the

7:24

public for the entire month of February.

7:26

The exhibit, theme, Black Arts and Culture

7:28

in Gwinnett, features works from local and national

7:30

creators that depict the black experience

7:32

through various mediums, including art, fashion,

7:34

and literature. The exhibit schedule

7:37

aligns the regular business hours, providing

7:39

an opportunity for visitors to celebrate the

7:41

legacy of Black History Month, a tradition

7:43

that originated as a weeklong observance

7:45

initiated by American historian Walter

7:47

G. Woodson in 1926

7:49

and which received national recognition

7:51

during the United States Bicentennial celebration

7:54

in 1976. Located at

7:56

75 Langley Drive in Lawrenceville,

7:58

the exhibit serves as an open invitation

8:00

for the public to explore and acknowledge

8:02

the significant contributions made by black

8:05

artists and cultural figures.

8:08

Georgia Match, a direct admission program

8:10

managed by the state of Georgia, recently mailed

8:12

letters to over 102,000 qualified

8:15

high school seniors informing them of public

8:17

colleges that have reserved spot for the fall

8:19

2024 term. Among the recipients

8:21

were three seniors, including one from Baltimore

8:23

High School, who were chosen as winners of

8:26

the Georgia match Peer Influencer Giveaway

8:28

for their efforts in promoting the program.

8:30

The winners, Zoe Harvin, Georgina martinez

8:32

and Justin Riddick, were presented with new

8:34

iPhones or MacBooks courtesy of the Georgia

8:37

Student Finance Commission. Riddick expressed

8:39

his gratitude and emphasized the many advantages

8:41

offered by the Georgia match program.

8:43

Georgia match aims to simplify the college

8:45

admissions process by offering eligible

8:47

students spots at 22 schools under

8:50

the Technical College system and up to 23

8:52

institutions within the university system.

8:54

The primary goal of this initiative

8:56

is to enhance college accessibility for

8:59

qualifying students during November's

9:01

Apply to College Month, the winners of the Peer

9:03

Influencer Giveaway encouraged other students

9:05

to take advantage of Georgia match, which coincided

9:07

with waive application fees at 50

9:10

participating colleges. Another opportunity

9:12

for fee waivers will be available in March.

What final thoughts after this?

9:21

This is Leah McGrath, your angles dietitian.

9:24

Are you a fan of yogurt? But

9:26

are you trying to avoid added sugar

9:28

by containers of plain yogurt

9:31

or plain Greek yogurt and add your

9:33

own fresh, frozen, or canned

9:35

fruit as long as the fruit is packed in

9:37

its own juice. If you like a little

9:39

bit of sweetness, you could add some non

9:41

caloric sweeteners or stir

9:44

in some low sugar jam.
