And now, and now

back to Hale Varsity Radio. Back

Cornhead logger, Chris Schmidelage, Herbal, Michael Bruntz

0:11

with us from Husker 24, 7 at

0:14

Michael Bruntz on Twitter, as

0:16

he is the proud owner of a unicorn

0:18

swimming pool, not a Denver fan when it

0:21

comes to the throwback unis. And

0:23

Bruntz. Is anybody a fan of the new Broncos

0:25

uniforms though, is the question? I thought throwbacks

0:27

are better than nothing. I like the white, the

0:30

white look with the old Denver D. Bruntz,

0:33

you don't like the old Orange Crush unis?

0:36

No, I love them. The,

0:38

that needs to be the uniforms,

0:40

not the the XFL, USFL versions

0:42

they've been running out. The

0:45

last couple of days here, they look, it

0:48

looks way too much like Texas, San

0:51

Antonio, or like UTEP, no offense. I

0:54

will say Bruntz, I was in Denver yesterday. I rolled

0:56

down to the stadium. I was one of the first

0:58

people there. I was just going to go check out

1:00

the stadium and see if there was any like mannequins.

1:02

And I was one of the first people to the

1:04

fan store. So I have sent you a

1:06

picture here live during the interview of the pictures I

1:08

took of the mannequins. They look better

1:11

in person. I still don't think

1:13

they're an upgrade on the old uniforms, but

1:15

upon seeing them like up close, personal,

1:17

like I was, I was like, okay,

1:20

you know what? They're maybe not as bad as I thought

1:22

whenever I saw them on Twitter. Yeah,

1:24

okay. I'll take your word for it. I

1:27

don't know why they need to make this difficult.

1:29

I mean, you basically, you had

1:32

the perfect uniform, perfect logo back in

1:34

like 1989. Like

1:37

the perfect logo has been there for years. Just

1:39

use that logo. That's all you got to do.

1:42

And they keep screwing it up. And then

1:44

somehow it got even worse because they traded

1:46

for Zach Wilson yesterday right after they announced

1:48

the jerseys. I don't know which thing they're

1:50

trying to cover up. The terrible trade or

1:52

the terrible uniform. Can you tell me? Both

1:55

is the answer. Both is the answer, but at

1:57

least you know Peyton's gonna trade up and get

1:59

you. that long lost

2:01

Elway 2.0, right? Yeah,

2:04

right. Yeah, at least like my

2:07

theory initially was they were trying to save

2:09

themselves a buck by not having to switch

2:11

the last names of the jersey, but they,

2:13

I guess they have to now with the

2:15

Wilson, so. Brunchy,

2:18

spring football, Saturday, a lot

2:21

of anticipation. Some

2:23

things you're excited about here with the

2:25

great assault it being the spring game.

2:28

Yeah, no, it's, you know, quarterbacks, I think,

2:30

are kind of towards the top of the

2:32

list. I think you're going to see a

2:34

lot of veterans who are

2:37

not going to be playing or suited

2:39

up on Saturday. I'm expecting some pretty

2:41

vanilla play calls as well. Not

2:43

to throw any water on that for anybody that's

2:45

on the fence about going, but I

2:49

do think, you know, the quarterbacks are going to

2:51

be the headline for better or for worse by

2:54

the time they walk off the field on

2:57

Saturday. You know, you're

3:00

also kind of eager to see some of the

3:02

young guys that, you know, we've been hearing a

3:04

little bit about. I mean, it feels like almost

3:07

every other, you know, meet availability, you

3:09

get a Vincent Shaver's mention, kind of curious

3:11

to see how he looks at that inside

3:13

linebacker spot. And just

3:16

kind of seeing, you know, this wide receiver group,

3:18

too. I mean, I think there's going to be

3:20

a lot of attention focused on the offense and

3:22

for good reason. And

3:24

who knows? I mean, if

3:26

you maybe you get a deep ball, maybe

3:29

a couple deep balls hit to a new guy. I mean,

3:31

you might be talking about

3:33

things like we did in 2011 when Breon Karn

3:35

picked a ball turner

3:37

wall in the spring game. So maybe

3:40

get a little buzz from that. Michael

3:42

Bruns with us here on Hail Varsity Radio

3:45

talking some Husker spring game thoughts. And

3:48

in Brunsley, what's your take on, I

3:51

guess, optimism with the

3:53

offense following what sounds like another good

3:55

scrimmage on Saturday? Do

3:58

you think there needs to be a progression

4:00

to mean by the time Saturday rolls around, you

4:02

know, offense trying to keep a little bit under

4:04

wraps. The defense has a little motivation after a

4:07

couple of bad scrimmages. Do you expect a return

4:09

to the mean, I should say, in

4:12

that regard on Saturday that the defense might

4:14

come back and play well? Yeah,

4:17

and it's always kind of interesting because you never

4:19

really know how guys are going to react when

4:21

the lights are on, right? You know,

4:23

for it's one thing to kind

4:25

of do it as a quarterback or

4:27

a skill position player when it's a scrimmage

4:29

and there's not a ton of people in

4:31

the crowd, and it's

4:33

a totally different thing when you're

4:36

having to do it in front of a crowd of, you

4:38

know, 50,000 or more for the first time. Like,

4:40

it's a completely different animal, so I'm expecting a

4:43

little bit of regression in that way. I

4:46

don't think they're going to run more or anything

4:48

more exotic on offense on Saturday than

4:50

what they've run in the

4:54

two scrimmages. So, I don't know. I mean,

4:56

I think as long as, I

4:58

think if the offense is efficient and

5:00

you don't have, you know, the false starts and

5:02

the turnover issues and things like that, I mean,

5:05

I think you can kind of take that as

5:07

a nice little bow on

5:09

what I think has been a pretty strong spring

5:11

for the most part for the offense. I mean,

5:13

I think, you know, they've got some pieces in

5:15

place where they can get some things done and

5:17

be improved from last year. And,

5:20

you know, like I said, I mean, I'm

5:22

expecting you're probably not going to have a

5:24

lot of the veteran defensive guys in there,

5:26

so, you know, you got to take

5:28

that big grain of salt there as well,

5:31

but I mean, I'm expecting, you know, the

5:33

offense to be competitive. We'll see how

5:35

explosive they can really be, though. Michael

5:37

Brunt's with us here on Hail Bar City

5:39

Radio. Senior writer with Nebraska

5:41

24-7, confined Bruntzy on

5:45

Twitter as well at Michael Brunt.

5:48

Spring football thoughts for Saturday. Do

5:50

you expect a noticeable or a big gap or

5:52

do you think it will be a situation

5:55

where all three quarterbacks look good?

5:58

Yeah, I don't know. I'm

6:01

guessing that it'll probably vary based upon who's

6:03

with whom on the offense. I mean, I

6:05

think that's going to be the

6:07

big thing is, you know, how each of

6:10

those quarterbacks works with, you know, what you

6:12

would kind of say is the top offense

6:14

or pieces of the top offense. You

6:17

know, I think each quarterback's kind of

6:19

had their moment at times this spring.

6:22

And you know, I think, you

6:25

know, this is going to carry on, this competition is

6:27

going to carry on into the fall. So

6:30

I'm not expecting too huge of a gap.

6:32

But I mean, I think in certain things

6:34

that the quarterbacks are going to be asked

6:36

to do, I'm expecting that things

6:38

will look a little different. I mean, you know, Dylan

6:40

Riola has a really strong arm and I think that's

6:42

going to show up. It's just

6:44

going to look a little bit different coming out of his hand

6:47

than it does the other quarterback. So, you

6:50

know, we'll see what kind of results that, you

6:53

know, brings along. But,

6:55

you know, I think they're going to

6:57

rotate a fair amount with those quarterbacks. I mean, I

7:00

really think they're going to give each of them a

7:02

chance to kind of work with that top

7:04

offense and see what they can do. So we'll

7:06

see how that looks. But yeah,

7:08

I mean, I think as much as anything for

7:11

the for Kalin and Riola, it's

7:13

about just kind of managing the moment because

7:15

this is, you know, on a totally different

7:17

level than anything they've experienced before. Michael,

7:20

would you look back to last season, the spring game

7:22

into fall? I think there was some tinkering with the

7:24

offense. I want to get your thoughts. So do you

7:26

think that Marcus Satterfield tailored his

7:28

offense to his quarterbacks as you're kind

7:31

of saying here that with different strengths,

7:33

they do different things. Do you think

7:35

we saw that last year with the offense that the offense

7:37

was tailored to the quarterback depending on who was in there?

7:40

Yeah, I mean, you know, the offense

7:43

that Heinrich Harburg was running in the

7:45

middle of the season was not the

7:47

offense that they went into the

7:49

season looking to run. You know, there

7:51

was going to be a lot of the quarterback

7:53

run stuff with Jeff Sams, but I think they kind

7:55

of found that, you know, there were

7:57

different strengths that Harburg had that, you know,

8:00

didn't necessarily have. I mean I think

8:02

Heiner Carberg had a pretty good feel

8:04

for some of the options stuff and better

8:06

so than the other quarterbacks and that's kind

8:08

of what they went with when he was

8:10

healthy. So I think

8:12

there's kind of

8:16

a base offense that they want everybody

8:18

to be able to do that kind

8:20

of pro style offense that

8:22

they want to run and they're gonna run

8:24

come hell or high water but I think kind of

8:26

the wrinkles that they run after that are probably a

8:29

little bit different based on who's in there and kind

8:31

of what those strengths are and I would expect that

8:34

that would be you know the case this

8:36

year too. I mean you know if

8:38

you go to Harburg I mean it's gonna look

8:41

a little bit different probably in what they call

8:44

compared to the other two who aren't necessarily as

8:47

good of runners or as willing of runners as

8:49

maybe what Heinrich is. So I think

8:52

you kind of always have to tailor it a little

8:54

bit. I think last year was a little bit of

8:56

a special case given

8:58

kind of how things played out where it was you

9:01

know a different offense in the middle of the season and

9:03

then once you had even more injuries it was just kind

9:06

of a potpourri almost of kind of what they

9:08

were trying to do and that's a tough

9:10

way to have success. Brancia

9:12

we'll get you out of here on

9:14

this what to get your thoughts on

9:17

tonight. Nebraska, Kansas, Drew Christo, Big

9:19

Red trying to fix Tuesdays. Yeah

9:23

no another another swing at mid-weeks for

9:25

Nebraska. Was there a pun intended? No,

9:29

kind of. With Christo

9:31

he's been in the in

9:37

the weekend all over they went to Will

9:39

Walsh on Sunday of Drew Christo and now

9:41

he gets Tuesday nights. An opportunity for him

9:43

to kind of step in

9:46

and you know kind of get

9:48

right the ship a little bit. His last

9:50

couple outings have not been very

9:52

good. He hasn't made it out of the third

9:54

inning and either of those starts so this

9:56

is a chance for him to kind of reset the deck a

9:58

little bit on kind of where season petted

10:00

and different Nebraska you know that

10:03

they came off of a nice series

10:05

win over Maryland they won with the

10:07

Mercy rule on Sunday this

10:10

Kansas team is actually playing pretty good

10:12

baseball too themselves they went down to

10:14

Baylor and won a series down there

10:17

they won by Mercy rule on Sunday

10:19

too so this should actually

10:21

be a pretty good matchup potential

10:24

for a high scoring game just based

10:26

on how the the pitching

10:28

kind of lines up and also how the offenses

10:30

tend to play so

10:32

you know opportunity for Nebraska to kind

10:35

of get get more things done on

10:37

this homestand they've got this

10:39

midweek and then they host Iowa for three coming

10:41

in here so it's a really important week for

10:44

Nebraska in terms of kind of where they're headed. Michael

10:46

quickly here I'm not sure I've been out of town

10:48

on vacation so I'm not sure I'm out of the

10:50

loop here but I'm seeing that tonight is Canadian

10:52

night at Haymarket Park for this house of gentlemen

10:55

you know what that means is that just where

10:57

your your best Canadian tuxedo what does that entail

10:59

do you have any idea I believe

11:02

well now that you can get beer maybe

11:04

that means that you're looking at a little

11:06

bats or molesons or something like that but

11:09

I think that means you're

11:11

a strong chance of poutine maybe

11:14

they get to get you like

11:16

the souvenir cup of poutine I

11:18

don't know it's just a

11:20

celebration of the fact that Nebraska has more

11:23

Canadians on their off of it you'd probably

11:25

expect by just looking at

11:27

it but yeah I guess you know put

11:29

put the jeans on get

11:32

the gravy and head out to the ballpark

11:35

I guess that's the recipe. Gene

11:37

jackets, smoked meat

11:39

and labats. Yeah

11:42

and yelling about the maple leaf that's

11:44

what you're doing tonight. Go Leafs! Brunsie

11:46

we'll check in later thanks for the

11:48

time. Anytime guys thanks a lot. Good

11:51

to spend time with Michael Bruns, Hale

11:53

Varsity Radio, Dave Mannerich gonna join us

11:55

here next segment till I'll talk Cornusker

11:57

State Games. Time to get signed

11:59

up. and get that wiffle ball

12:01

team assembled. Reminder about Nebraska Department

12:04

12:06

it saves lives, it prevents injuries

12:08

12:16

forgot to ask Brunsee about his pure

12:19

joy moment in sports. Elijah

12:23

lived it per se last night. Denver

12:26

and Lakers playoff game winner.

12:29

Laid out my Nebraska memories. Katie

12:31

Bell talked about a couple

12:34

of his moments and top one, of course,

12:36

with Jack's run. I'm gonna throw the court

12:38

storm against Wisconsin in there for me too.

12:41

Oh, that's fair, that's very good. Hell of

12:43

a comeback. Some memories to be made

12:45

for sure with Cornesker State Games. We'll tell

12:47

you about it. Dave Mannerik, Executive Director, next.
