Listen to the song about this amazing young girl! HALLIE O’WEEN

Hallie O’ Ween was a shy child. In fact, she was the shyest child in her small Celtic village. How shy was she? She didn’t talk to anyone except her parents!

While the other children were outside playing, Hallie would sit inside the house and help her mother make clothes for the other villagers.

Hallie loved to help her mother dye the clothes beautiful colors.

Hallie mixed the pots of dye and tried to make each color special.

Sometimes she would hear the other children outside laughing and think, "This is the day I'm going to go outside and play!"  But then she would think about it too much and run back to her mother's skirts.

It was especially painful at the end of summer; While the other children in her village would become very excited to celebrate the harvests, Hallie would spend time making a special dress so she could join in.

She would dream about the large friendly gatherings, where everyone enjoyed the fresh fruits and vegetables that they had picked from the fields that summer. She'd sew her dress and imagine dancing and laughing the night away.

Everyone in the village was welcome to enjoy the festivities held on Oct. 31st , the day they named all Hallows eve. Children, parents and grandparents from near and far came together on this special day.

Unfortunately, other uninvited guests also showed up to wreak havoc on the festivities! Ghosts, witches and goblins would rush through the village, making a mess and scaring the villagers.

Hallie wanted to be with everyone, but year after year her shyness was even stronger than her fear of goblins.

When she was ten years old, her mother begged her to come join them, but once again, Hallie was too scared. She refused to leave the house and hid under her bed with that year's special dress clutched in her hands.

Hallie's mother was sad. Every year she too missed out on the celebration to stay home with Hallie.  She knew that not only was Hallie scared of the witches, ghosts and goblins, but she was also too shy to play with the other kids, so she sat home all alone in the kitchen while her daughter hid in her room.

This year she said, "Hallie, you are ten years old. Old enough to make your own decisions. Old enough to stay home if you choose.  I would love to see you go to the celebration, because this year I plan on going. Will you go with me?"  Hallie looked up and her mother, her chin quivering, "Maybe next year mamma.  You go, I'll be ok here."

As the night got darker and the festivities got louder, Hallie wrapped herself in a blanket and crawled under the bed. She heard a loud noise. “CRASH!” She peaked out from under the bed. A Goblin had broken into the house!

The Goblin picked up buckets of dye and threw them, splattering the walls, the floor and the ceiling. Just before Hallie hid her head back under the bed, several different colors of dye dripped from the ceiling and covered her hair. She looked like a rainbow!

The Goblin picked up pots and pans, banged them together. He grabbed piles of clothes her mother had just mended and scattered them all over the house.

Hallie didn’t know what to do? Under the bed as she pulled her blanket tighter, she heard a small voice in her ear, “Don’t be afraid. He is just as scared as you are.”

Hallie turned to see a smiling spider sitting on her shoulder.

Normally Hallie would be too scared to move, but the spider had such a friendly face she actually looked her in the eye and smiled back.

The spider said, “My name is Bumpkin and I live inside of a pumpkin. What’s your name?”

Hallie smiled and wanting to be a part of the game, she tried to make it rhyme. “My name is Hallie O’ Ween and my house is very clean.”

Bumpkin laughed and looked out at the Goblin making a mess, “Not now! It’s big mess! You have to scare him away.”

Hallie shivered, “I can’t do that, he’s a Goblin.”

Bumpkin whispered, “I know a secret, ghosts and goblins and witches all get scared too.”

Hallie didn’t believe Bumpkin at first, “They do?”

Bumpkin moved closer, “YUP! All creatures can get scared.”

Hallie looked out at the goblin who was now messily eating, all of their fresh fruit, “How can I scare him away?”

“You just have to be strong and confident and make some funny noises. That should work,” said Bumpkin.

Hallie wasn’t sure, “But if he sees my shoulders shaking and my scared face, he’ll know that I’m afraid.”

Bumpkin, thought a moment, “How about you cover up your shaking shoulders and your scared face with this blanket? Then run out and chase him away? I’ll help you.”

Hallie hesitated, then she saw the Goblin pick one of her dresses and try to put it on.

“That’s my favorite dress!” Hallie yelled as she pulled the blanket over her head and around her shoulders.

With lightning speed, Bumpkin crawled across to her other ear while spinning an elegant mask to disguise her face, “Now he won’t see your face.”

Hallie touched the mask and took a deep breath as she watched the Goblin put his arm in a sleeve.

Hallie leaped out from under the bed and screamed, “Give me my dress! AHHHH!”

Behind her Bumpkin multiplied herself into dozens of colorful spiders and crawled toward the Goblin.

The Goblin jumped up, threw the dress down, and rushed out the window.

Hallie pulled the blanket off and LAUGHED! She laughed and laughed and laughed! She had never laughed so hard in her entire life.

Bumpkin un-multiplied herself back to one spider and congratulated Hallie, “You did it! Your costume worked!”

Hallie smiled at Bumpkin until she heard a loud “SCREAM” from outside.

Hallie and Bumpkin ran to the window. Outside was chaos! Ghosts, witches and goblins were chasing villagers, knocking over tables and chairs and stealing the food. It was worse than ever before!

Hallie turned, “Bumpkin, I need your help.”

Hallie anddozens of Bumpkins went to work. They took the piles of clothes, and made them into a variety of different costumes, scarecrows, witches, monsters and more.

Hallie gathered up the clothes, ran outside and distributed them to the villagers, “Put them on.”

Hallie told her parents what happened with the goblin and they helped her give out the costumes.

The villagers were confused, but Hallie’s parents assured them this would work.

Once they all had their costumes on, together they ran toward the witches, ghost and goblins shouting. “BOO!”

The witches, ghosts and goblins had never seen creatures such as this before. They quickly scattered and left the village.

The villagers all congratulated Hallie on her brilliant idea.

A small girl said, “That was an amazing trick! Now we get to keep all of our treats!”
