Welcome to your 2023 work recap. This
0:03
year, you've been to 127 sync meetings, you
0:06
spent 56 minutes searching for files
0:08
and almost missed eight deadlines. Yikes!
0:12
2024 can and should sound
0:14
different. With monday.com, you can work together
0:16

Go to monday.com or tap the banner
0:26
to learn more. As
0:30
a person with a very deep voice,
0:32
I'm hired all the time for advertising
0:34
campaigns. But a deep voice doesn't sell
0:36
B2B, and advertising on the wrong platform
0:39
doesn't sell B2B either. That's
0:41
why if you're a B2B marketer,
0:43
you should use LinkedIn ads. LinkedIn
0:45
has the targeting capabilities to help
0:47
you reach the world's largest professional
0:49
audience. That's right, over 70 million
0:52
decision makers all in one place.
0:54
All the bigwigs, then mediumwigs. Also
0:56
smallwigs who are on the path
0:58
to becoming bigwigs. Okay, that's
1:00
enough about wigs. LinkedIn ads allows you to
1:02
focus on getting your B2B message to
1:05
the right people. So, does that mean you
1:07
should use ads on LinkedIn instead of hiring
1:09
me, the man with the deepest voice in
1:12
the world? Yes, yes it does.
1:14
Get started today and see why LinkedIn
1:16
is the place to be, to be.

2:09
relieved that she was taking him
2:11
seriously that he did not hesitate,
2:14
but jumped out of bed at once, pulled
2:17
on his dressing gown, and pushed
2:19
his glasses back onto his nose.
2:22
I'm Vanessa Zoltan. And
2:24
I'm Mauricio Bruce. And
2:26
this is Harry Potter and the Sacred Text.
2:30
We have a special guest today. I'm
2:32
going to describe you now in the
2:34
roles that you have in order of
2:36
importance. Okay. Okay? Number
2:39
one, you're one of my oldest and best
2:41
friends. This is true. I
2:43
think that's actually all the people need to know. Is
2:46
that something right? That's
2:49
my only role. That is,
2:51
he just sits and waits for me to
2:53
call. Mauricio,
2:56
you are a therapist. You are
2:58
a third year Master's of Divinity
3:00
student at Harvard Divinity School. And
3:02
you teach with me our What
3:04
Matters class, and you're going to
3:06
be leading a pilgrimage with us
3:08
in 2025. And
3:11
we just wanted to introduce you to everybody because
3:13
as soon as people meet
3:15
you, you become their favorite. I'm
3:18
very excited to be here. I
3:20
am one of your oldest and closest friends. Pulls
3:25
us apart and brings us back together. And
3:27
now just because of things, we're both back
3:29
in Cambridge. I know. And
3:31
that's exciting. It is so exciting.
3:34
So I have just a few announcements before we jump in
3:36
and I ask you to tell your story. One
3:39
is that we are going to have a bonus conversation
3:41
for our patrons. And
3:43
I thought that I would make you talk about a
3:46
St. Mungo's type experience, which you and I have
3:48
both had surgery in the last six months. And
3:51
so I thought that you and I could each tell
3:53
a story about waking up from surgery. Because
3:56
you and I are very funny on drugs.
4:00
I thought why not embarrass ourselves
4:02
and tell a story that will make Arthur
4:04
feel accompanied. That's good. Great.
4:07
And then other than that, we just want to
4:09
tell people that you can subscribe to ad-free episodes
4:11
on Apple Podcasts and you can also rate and
4:13
review us there. And you can
4:16
listen to our Patreon park at patreon.com/Harry
4:18
Potter sacred text. Mauricio,
4:20
you have a story for us on
4:22
the theme of individuality. What
4:24
story are you telling us today? Okay.
4:27
I have a story that this chapter
4:30
immediately takes me back to and this
4:32
is 2007. So
4:35
I was living in St. Louis at the
4:37
time. Everyone should know I'm originally from Costa
4:39
Rica and I had moved to the United
4:41
States to be in college. And I
4:43
also was pretty sure that I
4:46
wanted to figure out a way to stay
4:48
in the United States, find a job or
4:51
find a way to stay. So
4:53
I'd been working as an admissions officer
4:55
at Washington University in St. Louis, a
4:58
job that I really didn't like. Not
5:01
because of the job, just it wasn't for me. And
5:04
what happened was in 2007, one stormy
5:07
night, I
5:10
had a dream. And in the
5:12
dream, this man who called
5:14
himself a shaman in Mexico spoke
5:17
to me and he called me up
5:20
into his little
5:22
hut, which had lots of
5:24
birds flying inside and it was
5:26
covered in water. Like the floor had about a foot of
5:28
water and there were lots of fish. And
5:31
he said to me, you know,
5:33
you need to go back home. And I
5:35
said, what? No. He said, yeah, you
5:37
need to go back to Costa Rica because
5:40
if you don't, awful things will happen. And
5:43
I woke up from my dream, really
5:45
scared and also really frustrated
5:47
because I didn't want to leave. I
5:49
wanted to stay in the United States, but I felt
5:52
that this dream was an order that
5:56
I could not not follow. And so
5:58
2009, I had
6:00
quit my job, I had packed up my apartment,
6:02
I had given up my
6:04
visa privileges, and I was
6:07
moving back to Costa Rica, all because of
6:09
this dream that made me feel like
6:11
it was imperative and important that
6:14
I move. This
6:17
dream obviously connects me to
6:19
chapter 22 for very obvious
6:21
reasons, but also for this feeling
6:23
that I had that there was one
6:25
part of it that it was, you're special,
6:27
and so you have to listen to
6:29
this communication from the other
6:32
world, whatever that means, but also
6:34
if you don't do it, you're
6:37
gonna be singled out as bad. Bad
6:40
things will happen to you if you don't follow
6:43
the instructions and move to Costa Rica. So
6:45
I moved and I actually ended up doing
6:47
great things in Costa Rica, I lived here
6:49
for, I still live here. I've
6:52
just recently moved back to Cambridge for
6:54
Harvard, but in a way I have
6:57
always thought of that dream as sort of my destiny
6:59
calling. I don't know
7:01
if I believe in destiny, but that's the way I
7:03
interpret that dream, and it became this important moment in
7:05
my life when I had to think about me
7:09
in the context of something larger
7:11
that was out there sort of guiding
7:13
me, which hadn't been a part of my reality
7:15
until then. Now, thank you so
7:18
much for that story. When Matt's
7:20
not here, I look at the etymology
7:22
of words, and individuality
7:24
starts getting used, I think pretty long
7:26
ago, considering other things I know about
7:28
how we think of ourselves, which is
7:31
in the 1610s, and
7:34
it meant the aggregate of
7:36
one's idiosyncrasies. But then
7:38
it also, in more medieval
7:40
Christian times, meant the condition
7:42
of existing as an individual.
7:45
And I love thinking of individuality as
7:48
a condition, that
7:50
there are some conditions in which your
7:52
individuality is not the thing that matters,
7:55
you are part of a community, and
7:57
so you're not an individual, you
7:59
are... a Weasley and like all
8:01
Weasley children are pulled into an office
8:03
and actually Harry, you're not an individual.
8:05
You are also a Weasley in the
8:08
St. Mungo's Room, but you're an individual
8:10
in Dumbledore's office, right? So it can
8:12
really be fluid when we are an
8:15
individual and when we are sort of part of
8:17
a community. But also when
8:19
we are really individuated, like
8:22
there's a lot of freedom in that, but
8:24
like so much pressure and responsibility in that
8:27
too. And I think your story really beautifully
8:29
articulates that. There's power,
8:31
there's responsibility, there's freedom, but
8:34
there's also all eyes on you. Right.
8:36
So I completely agree. I
8:38
like that that what you brought up, it's
8:40
a condition. Yeah.
8:42
So now we will remind people
8:44
what it is that happened in
8:47
this chapter. We will each
8:49
take our turn. I will try my
8:51
best to recap the chapter in 30 seconds
8:53
and then you will try to recap the
8:55
chapter in 30 seconds. Can you please count
8:57
me in? Yes.
9:00
Three, two, one,
9:02
go. So
9:04
Harry convinces McGonagall and they all go
9:07
to Dumbledore's office and Fox, like they
9:09
are very worried that Umbridge is going to come
9:11
in and they find Arthur's body
9:14
through the portrait and then it
9:16
becomes clear that Arthur is in a lot
9:18
of danger. And so Dumbledore turns a portkey
9:20
into something into a portkey and Dumbledore and
9:23
Harry lock eyes and Harry feels pain and
9:25
then they go to Sirius and then they
9:27
go to Arthur and Arthur was attacked protecting
9:29
something, but we don't know what and he's
9:31
going to be okay. Don't
9:34
worry now. Arthur is going to be
9:36
okay. Okay.
9:39
Okay. Mauricio,
9:41
are you ready? Ready.
9:44
On your mark, get set, go. Okay.
9:47
So Harry wakes up from his dream and
9:49
he's really scared. He's called out to tell
9:51
people that Mr. Weasley is
9:53
hurt. So McGonagall takes him
9:56
to Dumbledore who believes him and he has these
9:58
little machines which he uses to like. Frame
10:00
and explore. Harrys had any with and and
10:02
they are either party but they lock eyes
10:04
and he feel that she wants to kill
10:06
Dumbledore. but these are go to serious and
10:09
spend the night and then they got a
10:11
Sigma Goes where they see Mister Weasley and
10:13
he's gonna be okay but he was fixing
10:15
something and then six years that keep. An
10:19
eye on them arts. Is
10:25
possessed by Baltimore. That's
10:28
why we since we
10:30
since people. For
10:34
you to hear. Some. Receive the
10:37
most obvious place. To. Me:
10:39
where we like really see individuality. Is
10:41
this a slate? Jury has
10:43
of this and nobody else has
10:45
seen it and everybody is acting
10:48
on this information that only he
10:50
has been defense and it is
10:52
information that. Only. He has
10:54
been given because of lot of
10:56
very specific circumstances and yeah it
10:58
is up to everybody else as
11:01
to whether or not will be
11:03
believed in taken seriously re and
11:05
so it is simultaneously totally about
11:07
him as an individual and yet
11:10
it is also entirely. About how
11:12
people respond. To. Him and
11:14
his isolation. Missy single some sell thousand
11:16
away. He comes out of the pack
11:18
and says I had to stream this
11:20
is what's going on I have information
11:22
and everybody around him has to turn.
11:25
And. Decide whether this is real or not the
11:27
We believe this person. Is this true or
11:29
not? You. Know the.
11:33
Really scary. Moments and our regular
11:35
lives. Right when you're the only person
11:37
who see something as troubling, when you're
11:39
the only person who, whatever it is
11:41
like if you're the only person in
11:44
your family has like no, no, the
11:46
car is parked. In. the east
11:48
person lot and everybody else is like know
11:50
it's the last and you're like know now
11:52
i am one hundred percent sure rights that
11:55
even if you are sure as you are
11:57
walking to the parking lot and every is
11:59
following you know, right? Like there's so
12:01
much pressure because you individuated
12:04
yourself. Yeah, you're sure that
12:06
it's in the East parking lot. You
12:08
start taking everyone there, everyone who said,
12:10
not here. And
12:12
then you start doubting, right, whether it's in
12:14
the East parking lot or not. Right. And
12:16
you start thinking if I brought them all
12:18
the way here, and for some
12:21
reason, my memory is wrong, and the car
12:23
is not here. I may have to
12:25
face the consequences. Yeah, having
12:28
like put my neck out. Right.
12:31
And I love that Harry like you press
12:34
his dream enough to follow it. And
12:36
I, I do think that part of
12:38
the reason he does is because it's
12:40
someone who he loves that risk. If
12:43
it was a dream about his own
12:45
demise, I wonder what Harry would do.
12:47
But he like, this is worth sticking
12:49
my neck out for it is possible that
12:51
Mr. Weasley is seriously injured.
12:54
That's a good point. If it hadn't been
12:56
Mr. Weasley, if it been just some random person
12:58
that he saw, you know, some
13:01
worker in the ministry who
13:03
he saw, opened by the snake,
13:05
would he have stuck his
13:08
neck out? Or is this something about love and
13:10
about the clan? Yeah, I do
13:12
think it's in part his love of Mr.
13:14
Weasley that he's like, this is worse. Even
13:16
if I'm wrong, this is worth being wrong about. Yeah.
13:20
Yeah, it's interesting also that this is the first
13:22
dream where he's looking through the eyes of a
13:24
snake. There's something there's a different
13:26
quality to this dream. And
13:29
I think talks even brings it up and says
13:31
this isn't about seeing the future. This is about
13:33
seeing the present. We don't really know how to
13:35
work with this. This is new. You're different. Yeah.
13:39
So being singled out always
13:41
puts you in a place that could
13:43
be both good. And
13:45
that could be bad for you, right? Like
13:47
with the pressure of everyone watching, right? I
13:49
had this weird dream. Nobody has dreams like
13:52
this. This is not a quote unquote
13:54
known form of magic. Right.
13:57
So what does that say about me? Am I
13:59
shiny? here? Is this a
14:01
good superpower? Or is this
14:03
a bad thing? Is this something that's dangerous? Am I
14:06
in trouble? Did I
14:08
somehow kill Mr. Weasley? He's
14:10
so glad that he has this information because
14:12
he's able to save Arthur's
14:15
life. But he's also really
14:17
scared that he participated and was
14:19
like deeply complicit in
14:21
this injury. And so I think that,
14:24
yeah, it's heightened in this moment.
14:26
But I think that that is
14:28
exactly the fear with individuality. It's
14:32
I'm seeing something exciting, but also people
14:34
could laugh at me, whatever it is,
14:36
right? Like there's always the both
14:38
of it. I love it.
14:40
Harry is so sensitive in this chapter.
14:42
He's like really looking around
14:44
at everyone and trying to figure
14:46
out how they're reacting to him.
14:49
And the one that like really
14:51
hurts him the most is Dumbledore.
14:53
So like he keeps saying like,
14:55
I just wish Dumbledore would look
14:57
at me. It's really irritating him
14:59
that Dumbledore isn't looking at him.
15:01
And I'm wondering what you make
15:03
of that in terms of individuality.
15:07
One of the first questions that I come to
15:09
is why isn't Dumbledore looking
15:11
at him? What is Dumbledore going through?
15:13
What is Dumbledore feeling or sensing or
15:15
thinking? Or in a way, how
15:18
is Dumbledore protecting Harry as an adult who really
15:20
loves Harry, saying I don't want to look at
15:22
him because I don't want him to see the
15:24
fear in my eyes, the concern in my eyes.
15:27
Yeah, Harry doesn't know and we as the
15:29
readers don't know in this moment, but like
15:32
it will turn out that Dumbledore has like
15:34
an actual agenda. But yes, like Harry has
15:36
no idea. I think even if I
15:38
bring it to my life,
15:40
in moments when I stick my
15:42
neck out and I say something,
15:45
and somebody whose support I want isn't
15:47
looking at me, the hole I feel
15:49
in my stomach.
15:52
Here I am sticking my neck out for
15:54
all of us, I may think. And you're
15:56
not looking at
15:59
me and there's no magical reason that
16:01
I know of, right? Right.
16:05
But there might be a love reason. I can't
16:07
look at you right now because I feel
16:09
so proud, because I feel so much love, and it's
16:12
hard for me to hold that. Or
16:15
because I feel so concerned, I feel so afraid
16:17
of what you're saying, and I don't want to
16:19
take your strength away. So
16:22
I think when
16:24
Dumbledore doesn't look at Harry, magical
16:27
reason aside, there's
16:31
also an individuality, and there's a power
16:33
that's given to Harry by not having
16:35
to support himself on
16:38
Dumbledore's gaze, right? Like Harry
16:40
needs to hold this on his own. It's
16:42
a part of growing up, and it's a
16:44
part of maturing, that you need to be
16:46
able to hold your individuality yourself. The moment
16:48
you rely on someone else for that, it's
16:50
no longer individuality. Right, and I think
16:53
that's part of what Harry is
16:55
crying out for, right? He's like,
16:57
I'm not ready to do this
16:59
alone. You feel individuated in a
17:01
horrible way. Like you feel singled out, right? He's
17:03
looking at everybody else. And
17:06
it is so hard in those moments to do
17:08
what you just modeled for us, of assuming that
17:10
it's coming from a place of love, or
17:12
from knowing some deep magical strategy, right? You're
17:14
just like, you just don't even think. I
17:16
deserve to be looked at. When
17:19
you feel singled out, it's so easy
17:21
to start doubting yourself. And
17:24
I think because we all carry around
17:26
guilt for being imperfect people, we are
17:29
all very quick to believe that
17:31
other people are judging us for those things,
17:33
when that is not usually the case, other
17:35
people. My
17:38
desk being clean is a standard to which I
17:40
hold myself. But when I take people on a
17:42
tour of my office, and I'm like, I'm sorry,
17:44
my desk is a mess, I don't think most
17:46
people are actually being like, that
17:49
desk looks messy, right? Like
17:51
we can feel judged for
17:53
exactly the things that we judge
17:55
ourselves for. But that's not what's
17:57
going on with Dumbledore at all. We
18:00
actually know rate that Dumbledore is not
18:02
looking at Harry because. A
18:04
because of like his loving concerned for
18:07
Harry right? she doesn't want Harry to
18:09
become Marvel that then for Voldemort and.
18:12
To is. It's just like
18:14
actually about Dumbledore, which is almost always that
18:16
t if someone is judging you are pulling
18:18
away right? Like it's not about Harry, it's
18:21
about Dumbledore in his specificity and in his
18:23
individuality. Dumbledore knows that. Waldemar.
18:26
Wants to get to him right? Like Dumbledore
18:28
has all the special knowledge and special power
18:30
in the one person evil the most most
18:32
serious as Dumbledore. And so you know he's
18:35
not. So no one said, look at Harrys.
18:37
But like Waldemar isn't gonna care to weaponize
18:39
Harry by listening in to conversations that he's
18:41
having with her my knees. His conversations with
18:44
Dumbledore that Waldemar will try to sort of
18:46
like crap and to hurt his head for.
18:48
So it's interesting. What does it is a
18:50
kind of hubris were Dumbledore. It's like me
18:53
for the mars gonna want to get me.
18:55
but. It's actually right size like he
18:57
is absolutely grad. School
19:00
even get a moment about right
19:02
before the port keyword word a
19:04
hairy and Dumbledore lock eyes we
19:07
see sort of Voldemort come through
19:09
and feel this anger. And you
19:11
know harry, what's to fight? Dumbledore.
19:15
And we see how much that hurts
19:17
Harry and how much that scares Harrys
19:19
And so we can also see with
19:21
doubled was protecting him from for they
19:23
were more of that last. It's not
19:25
like Voldemort comes in and moves Harry
19:27
out of the way. Harrys still there
19:29
to feel of things. He feels. Yeah,
19:32
I think you're right. I hadn't thought of that that.
19:34
It's like. It's. Not just strategy,
19:36
it's also love for Harrys suspect
19:38
this time that Dumbledore is looking
19:40
at Harry right leg. He thinks
19:42
that Harrys gonna be looking away
19:44
in this moment the he's gonna
19:46
be looking at the Port Keys.
19:49
And so he is sort of
19:51
like watching this child and time
19:53
to deeds how he's feeling and
19:55
they happen to cat's eyes. That
19:57
like Harry even has the wrong
19:59
information. Dumbledore, Iirc looking at hand
20:01
is not making eye contact with
20:03
him. And will you
20:05
bring it up? that way it becomes
20:07
really beautiful, right? Yes, he's protecting him
20:09
from a distance, the way she can
20:11
protect them. And knowing that there are.
20:14
Bigger. Things going on. That theory.
20:17
And. And pretty much but nobody knows
20:19
yet. Rates like we don't even the
20:21
reader doesn't know about the for praxis
20:23
was. As. Playing.
20:26
Out right here see the connection.
20:29
And Dumbledore trying to handle this
20:31
information sensitively, were also taking care
20:34
of. Harrys are also protecting himself.
20:36
While so, Dumbledore has. Probably.
20:39
A bigger role as an individual because
20:41
of how much knowledge he has and
20:44
how much he needs to be able
20:46
to juggle this. When Harry comes in
20:48
and Dumbledore start sending his portraits off
20:50
you go to St. Mongers, You do
20:52
this. He gulps any sort of see
20:54
the Dumbledore old which and with your
20:57
team, yeah, there's something there that's kind
20:59
of beautiful. race. Of all these old
21:01
headmasters, all their energies or their souls,
21:03
I don't know how to put his
21:05
work at all. Sort of coming together
21:08
as a team. To. Help
21:10
with whatever is going on. And
21:12
also you see Dumbledore as a
21:15
leader that. We will see either
21:17
This idea that the Dumbledore doesn't
21:19
let anyone that we like never
21:21
see a sort of council around
21:24
Dumbledore, whereas methodical the second she
21:26
becomes headmistress is like poverty. Please
21:28
come. Yeah, I need everybody's out.
21:30
This is one of the moments
21:33
where we see tumbled our fault.
21:35
Council It seems like it's
21:37
it team as. Cheerleaders
21:40
Which we need Cheerleaders
21:42
but. I'm. Torn apart
21:44
of you into the like. Dumbledore does
21:46
have a council, a feeble who talks
21:48
to another part of me as like.
21:52
Diverse enough council to actually be effect
21:54
as. C
21:58

23:32
Out there is like it's the
23:34
opposite of individuality and this chapter
23:36
in i think a really beautiful
23:38
I which is set the weasley
23:40
use become though we usually is
23:42
right like. There's no incentive.
23:44
There's no Fred and George. There's
23:46
no distinction between the before is
23:48
except media perceive wish you know
23:50
is it's own thanks It is
23:52
weak all the we've we told
23:54
and. All. of the weasley
23:56
is are welcome at serious as house
23:59
and it's this christ that has made
24:01
them not separate
24:03
from each other at all, but like
24:05
as a family, right? They really cohere.
24:08
Yes, and as you're saying this,
24:10
I'm thinking, Mr. Weasley is singled
24:13
out because he's the hurt one.
24:15
And so when Mr. Weasley gets singled
24:17
out, they all sort of coalesce around
24:20
him, right? The clan has
24:22
formed around the individual to protect him
24:24
and to help him heal. Yes.
24:27
So yeah, it is the Weasleys and all
24:29
the siblings are called in and they're all
24:31
taken to Sirius's and they're all treated as
24:33
sort of this mass, but because
24:36
they're coming around the one
24:38
who's sort of sticking out. Yeah,
24:40
there's this theory that you probably know about
24:43
more than I do of group dynamics, right?
24:45
That there's like a certain amount of attention
24:47
or energy in any given room in any
24:50
given dynamic. And if one person sucks 90%
24:52
of it, like the rest of
24:54
the group is gonna have to split to 10%. And
24:57
usually, or often that is in situations where
24:59
like, that is how it should be. Mr.
25:01
Weasley needs the 90% of attention. A
25:04
bride and groom should get most of the attention
25:06
on the day of their wedding, whatever it is.
25:09
We want people to be
25:11
the center of attention in those moments and for the
25:13
rest of us to sort of step back. But
25:16
then there are moments where that
25:18
becomes not healthy, but it is healthy here. It
25:21
absolutely is. They're all in mourning, they're all
25:23
afraid, they're all scared for what's happening. And
25:26
so to be seven afraid
25:28
people versus to all
25:30
be afraid together makes
25:33
a big difference. To come together
25:35
to hold those big emotions
25:37
and to make it safe. I don't
25:40
need to be an individual here. We're all feeling the
25:42
same thing. And so we can hold this for each
25:44
other rather than you each
25:46
deal with your sadness, you each deal with
25:48
your fear. So there's
25:50
a safety, there's a love,
25:52
and there's a security in
25:55
being one, being the waste lease.
25:57
And what I think is interesting is, moments
26:00
that Harry feels a part of that and
26:02
the moments Harry feels like he can't be
26:04
a part of that. You know,
26:06
I was the one who hurt Mr. Weasley, so
26:08
I can't be a part of their clan. Right.
26:11
I can't sleep right now. Everybody. And then they
26:13
say, no, come in. We want you here. And
26:15
he feels welcome, but he also
26:17
feels odd to be there. He feels
26:19
that their looks are saying, we don't
26:21
like you. You heard our dad get
26:24
out, which is all happening in his
26:26
head. Yeah. They're not
26:28
actually saying this, but
26:30
Harry can sometimes be a part of
26:32
this group and sometimes puts
26:36
himself out as an individual throughout
26:38
the chapter in pretty negative ways.
26:40
Right. Being Harry here is not
26:42
a positive thing for him. The
26:44
other thing that's interesting, though, is that
26:47
there are moments where other Weasleys are
26:50
separate. Right. Molly is separate because she's the one
26:52
who gets to go to the hospital first and
26:54
decide when the rest of the kids go. And
26:56
then there's this moment where Arthur reaches out his
26:58
arm to hug Ginny. Ron, George
27:02
and Fred are also there and are also
27:04
scared. But there's something about like
27:06
being the youngest and probably something gendered about
27:08
the fact that he reaches out his arm
27:10
for Ginny. And it is like
27:13
all of them are getting hugged in that
27:15
moment, though. Right. It's like, look, I'm well
27:17
enough to hug. We don't need to
27:19
go around the room and have you all hug
27:21
me because I'm fine. But like, let
27:23
me hug Ginny. And right. Like Ginny
27:25
becomes this like emissary for the rest
27:27
of the group. Right.
27:29
When it is a group, you can hug
27:31
one member in the group and it's you're
27:33
hugging the group. You don't have to hug
27:35
each of them individually. And
27:39
I just also want to shout out Arthur
27:41
is not just an individual within the Weasleys.
27:43
He is a very strong individual even as
27:45
a patient. He's like probably one of
27:47
the only patients in there who's like there's a muggle in
27:49
the hospital. I want to meet the muggle. He's
27:53
still Arthur. So,
28:07
Marisa, we are now going to do the
28:09
sacred reading practice that we call sacred imagination
28:12
in which I am going to read to
28:14
you a section of this
28:16
chapter. And the invitation that
28:18
I have is that you really try
28:20
to have a sensory experience using all
28:23
five of your senses. And
28:25
you can really imagine yourself into
28:28
any character in the scene
28:31
or be a fly on the wall. I'm going to be
28:33
reading from the very end of the chapter. It
28:36
is the moment at which Fred and George
28:38
have pulled out extendable ears. Molly,
28:40
Madi, Tonks, and Arthur are talking and
28:43
the children are all kicked out. And
28:46
Fred and George, in this kind of moment that you
28:48
were talking about, include Harry
28:50
in listening in on their
28:53
parents' conversation. And Harry has taken the
28:55
extendable ears. And this is what happens.
28:59
Gridding in spite of himself, Harry took the
29:01
end of the string and inserted it into
29:03
his ear as the twins had done. Okay,
29:06
go, Fred whispered. The
29:08
flesh-colored strings wriggled like long
29:10
skinny worms, then snaked under
29:13
the door. For a
29:15
few seconds, Harry could hear nothing. Then
29:18
he heard Tonks whispering as clearly as
29:20
though she were standing right beside him.
29:23
They searched the whole area, but they
29:25
couldn't find the snake anywhere. It
29:27
just seems to have vanished after it attacked you,
29:30
Arthur. But you know who
29:32
can't have expected a snake to get in,
29:34
can he? I reckon
29:36
he sent it as a lookout, growled Moody. Because
29:38
he's not had any luck so far ahead, he.
29:41
No, I reckon he's trying to get a
29:43
clearer picture of what he's facing. And if
29:45
Arthur hadn't been there, the beast would have
29:47
had much more time to look around. So
29:49
Potter says he saw it all happen? Yes,
29:52
said Mrs. Weasley. She sounded
29:54
rather uneasy. You know,
29:56
Dumbledore seems almost to have been waiting for
29:58
Harry to see something like Yeah,
30:01
well," said Moody, "'there's something funny about
30:03
the Potter kid. We all know that.'
30:06
Gumbledor seemed worried about Harry when I spoke
30:08
to him this morning," whispered Mrs. Weasley.
30:11
"'Course he's worried," growled Moody. "'The boy's
30:13
seeing things from inside you-know-who's
30:15
snake. Obviously Potter doesn't
30:18
realize what it means, but if
30:20
you-know-who's possessing him—" Harry
30:22
pulled the extendable ear out of his
30:24
own, his heart hammering very fast and
30:27
heat rushing up to his face. He
30:30
looked around at the others. They were
30:32
all staring at him, the strings still
30:34
trailing from their ears, looking
30:36
suddenly fearful." So,
30:39
Mauricio, is there anything that you noticed? Were
30:41
you a particular character here? I
30:44
was Harry. The
30:46
first thing I noticed is how much
30:50
those ears disgust me. Mm! Texture.
30:54
The texture, the worms, the way they—I
30:56
had to put them in my ear.
31:02
And then listening to
31:04
the adults whispering and knowing
31:06
that they're talking about me just
31:08
creates a lot of
31:11
anxiety in my chest, a
31:13
pit in my stomach, because again, I'm
31:15
being singled out and not in a good
31:18
way. I'm being thrust to be an individual.
31:20
I'm no longer part of the
31:22
clan. And what
31:24
they're saying about me is I'm being possessed.
31:27
I'm being used. And then when I
31:30
pull out the strings and
31:32
look at my friends and they're all
31:35
singling me or pushing me away from
31:37
their clan, there's just a great feeling
31:39
of loneliness, of despair, a great feeling
31:41
of sadness, of horror. Yeah,
31:43
and he was just so included, right?
31:46
At the beginning of the section, Fred
31:48
and George were like, come on, do it.
31:51
And he's like, okay, right? Like he's being
31:53
super included. And then he
31:55
just like becomes ostracized again. I was
31:57
like very much— in
32:01
this group of people and like in
32:03
a Hospital hallway and like I can't
32:05
help it I must have been in
32:07
a muggle hospital hallway because it like
32:10
the air conditioning was like up
32:12
really high like I was freezing and I was
32:14
like I must have been Jenny because I was
32:16
like near and touching all
32:18
these like taller boys and was
32:21
like trying to listen right and
32:23
so I'm like cold and tired
32:25
and Everything smells
32:28
like too acidic And
32:30
I'm uncomfortable even though I'm in
32:32
fine health like they haven't showered
32:34
like there's something to like really
32:37
Gross about this feeling and I feel like we've
32:39
all done that had some early morning where last
32:42
night did not go as planned and under
32:45
caffeinated whatever it is and then
32:47
like getting this just like really
32:50
shocking news and Yeah,
32:53
as Jenny right like you just want to assume the
32:56
best in Harry And so I just
32:58
felt so bad for him right like
33:00
I wasn't like oh gross I
33:03
was like oh my god you poor thing And
33:06
Jenny has been possessed by Voldemort. She's like the
33:08
one person in the world who can really understand
33:10
this and so Her being
33:13
there. I think is really striking to me that She's
33:16
standing right there and the
33:18
only other person in the world who's alive who could
33:20
understand what this means is Feet
33:23
away. I love that you brought that
33:25
up Because in
33:27
that moment when I'm just feeling all
33:29
those things It's so
33:31
hard for me to go Ginny's
33:33
here, and she knows what it feels
33:35
like and she's gonna keep me company
33:38
It's impossible, but it's also if we
33:40
can remember to sort of step
33:42
out of that and notice right cuz a Second
33:46
ago. We were all connected by these ears.
33:48
Yeah, they're all in the same string And
33:52
then I chose to pull it out and feel
33:54
the horror and feel the sadness and feel the
33:56
yeah What When are the moments where like
33:58
you can actually just like? Reach. Out your
34:01
hand, And ask them wanna hold
34:03
your hand? Feather them be horrified.
34:06
Oh, that would have been a very
34:08
different area if instead of a feeling
34:10
guilty and horrified, she reached out and
34:12
grab someone's hand. Or.
34:15
Think you for doing the spiritual practice
34:17
at the museum. Thank. You for
34:19
inviting me. This.
34:21
Week's voicemail is for hims se. How.
34:26
Secret Talks Team I'm calling
34:28
and with a blessing for
34:30
all the Mughal periods of
34:32
Hogwarts students. My.
34:34
Seven year old daughter and
34:36
I just finished the Harry Potter
34:38
and The Chamber of Secrets.
34:41
In. Alpha ten year old son
34:43
who will be turning eleven the
34:45
summer until I just like Harry
34:47
So even thinking a lot about
34:50
what if he were to get
34:52
a hug writes letters the summer
34:54
and. As.
34:56
My daughter has wisely said
34:59
I wouldn't let my son's.
35:02
Go to a school that
35:04
I don't even know where
35:06
it is, know anything about
35:08
it, or, ah, presumably even
35:10
know that wizards exist. So
35:13
blessings to the parents
35:16
who have a hard.
35:19
Situation. Of having
35:21
their children be gone
35:23
for. Almost. The. Whole.
35:27
Year at a time at
35:29
a school that they don't
35:31
even know anything about. Think.
35:35
You. Away and I
35:37
would never let my child at the school. Like
35:40
for things that they like send
35:42
some sort of represented as and
35:44
I like. This is what it's
35:46
like to sew a video of
35:49
her and their beautiful groves in
35:51
Scotland. But you know, yeah, years.
35:53
You know that happens. So.
35:55
Slow. what happens. I recently had a
35:57
conversation. with a kid on his eleventh
35:59
birthday He was a huge Harry Potter fan. I
36:01
was like, so you could get the letter any day now.
36:03
And he looked at me and he was like, yeah.
36:07
And he did not look excited by the
36:09
proposition. He was like, I'm glad I get
36:11
to stay home. And I was like, yeah,
36:13
11 is so little. But
36:17
yeah, I love, Jesse, that you're blessing the
36:19
parents. I think that, I really think I
36:21
would tell my kid no. You
36:24
can't leave me yet. Yeah,
36:26
I love that blessing too. It had never occurred
36:28
to me. And speaking
36:31
on the theme of individuality, what a
36:33
way for life to reach out
36:35
of 10 and say, hey you. You're
36:38
going to be different from all the other kids you know.
36:40
And we're going to take you to a school in Scotland
36:42
that you didn't even know existed. Where you
36:44
won't be an individual in that
36:46
way anymore, right? Where everyone will
36:48
be a witch or wizard like you. Well,
36:51
thank you, Jesse. Thank you, Jesse. It
36:55
is now time for us to remember, members
36:57
of our community who have been loved and
37:00
lost. Rob
37:02
Lamas, who was 35,
37:05
a joyful dancer and a beloved
37:07
friend. Great
37:13
Aunt Vicky, who is 80, a
37:16
reader, adventurer, and a multiple
37:18
myeloma fighter. Gio,
37:24
who is 17, a robotics
37:26
and quiz bowl student who is deeply
37:29
missed. Jim
37:35
Roberts, who was 63, an avid
37:38
camper, computer guru, and
37:41
a loved husband, father, and papa
37:43
choo choo. Kamie
37:50
Glazer, who was 28,
37:52
a fierce veterinarian,
37:54
a polar bear swimmer, and
37:57
a curiosity cultivator. May
38:03
their memories be a blessing. So
38:10
Mauricio, we now get to offer a
38:12
blessing for a character in the chapter.
38:15
Who would you like to bless? This
38:17
might be cliche, but I really want to bless Harry.
38:20
He's trying to understand who he is, like
38:22
all of us. He's
38:24
confused about whether he is good
38:26
or bad, about whether he's helping
38:28
or hurting. And
38:30
I find myself and
38:32
so many of the people around
38:34
me in that position so often
38:36
that to be able to see
38:39
him dealing with
38:41
this, trying to find his place in
38:43
life at such a young age, I
38:46
want to send him my little
38:49
bit of courage. I
38:52
love that. I want
38:54
to bless all the other portraits. These
38:57
people are game to help. And
39:00
I love that. And they're game to do silly
39:02
things in order to be part of helping, including
39:04
taking a sleep. And I don't know, I love
39:06
people who show up and are like, that's what
39:08
you need me to do? Okay.
39:11
It's just, you know, that's a great vibe to
39:13
have in your life. Next
39:16
week we're reading book five chapter
39:18

41:13
question that's on everyone's mind, how do you
41:15
live a good life? How much do work,
41:17
health, relationships matter? What about happiness, meaning money
41:19
and love? What if you're alone or anxious,
41:22
ill or in pain? These
41:24
are the questions we explore weekly.
