Chevalier whisks Emily off to a remote house in Colorado to recover.  Once she’s well enough to get around, he decides to begin the long process by learning as much as he can about what she’s been told of her history.  He discovers that many things have been kept from her, things that would help her understand what she’s capable of.  He also starts to introduce her to the heku species.

Chevalier learns that Ulrich is actively seeking Emily, and tension grows as she begins to retaliate for what she considers a hostage situation.  He discovers how dangerous her abilities can be and starts to wonder if he's putting both of their lives at risk needlessly.
