angel on Earth. There's just no

1:51

3:05

compelling and fascinating

3:07

people About how they became

3:09

3:12

what they do today,

3:14

we are joined by actress singer

3:17

Broadway legend and Grand

3:21

high good witch Christian

3:25

Chenoweth hi, Kristen.

3:27

Hi, jinx How

3:30

are you doing tonight? I

3:32

am so good. I'm so happy to see your

3:35

sweet face. Oh, thank

3:37

you Thank you so much for being on I

3:41

have told the story

3:44

of the night. I first met you onstage

3:48

offstage Multiple

3:50

times I've always wanted the

3:53

chance to tell you the story

3:55

of the night. I first met you I

3:58

feel like it's the best way. I I know

4:00

I've shared this story on this podcast

4:02

before, so I'm sorry to anyone

4:05

who's heard this multiple times, but

4:08

for me, this feels like a rite of passage.

4:15

We were in Dublin, Ireland

4:17

on a tour, and

4:19

we

4:20

were all just having

4:22

an after

4:23

hours, after show

4:26

drink with all the local queens.

4:28

We have already taken our makeup off

4:31

and stuff, and everyone's ... This

4:33

is after a long night

4:35

of touring and gigging, and

4:37

there was a bartender

4:40

who kept coming back and bringing drinks, who

4:42

was a petite young woman with

4:45

blonde hair piled on top of her head

4:47

in a big bun, and

4:49

we had all joked that she kind

4:52

of looked like Kristin Chenoweth.

4:55

So

4:56

later that evening,

4:59

when my best friend turns to me and says,

5:02

I need you to stay calm,

5:05

but Kristin Chenoweth is behind you, I said,

5:09

that's so funny. I've

5:11

seen the bartender. I know she looks like Kristin

5:13

Chenoweth. Nice try. Then I

5:15

turn around, and

5:18

it was

5:19

you, the Kristin Chenoweth.

5:23

When I saw you, my vision

5:26

blurred, my knees weakened,

5:29

and I thought I was going to faint.

5:32

I didn't, but I was

5:34

pretty convinced it was going to happen. What

5:38

was that night from your end? Okay,

5:41

so I was there to get an honorary doctorate

5:43

or an award from Oxford in

5:45

Dublin, and

5:47

I said, I want to go see the drag queen.

5:51

I thought I want to go see the Dublin drag queen. And

5:54

my sister was like, okay.

5:55

We're

5:57

piling that Uber, and we go to this

5:59

area. where, you know, one bar

6:01

where y'all were. And I walked in and

6:04

I see you. And from

6:06

my viewpoint, and there were some other queens

6:08

there that were amazing that I loved, but

6:10

from my viewpoint, I was like, and I think

6:13

even like I was kind of led up to you, you

6:15

know, and as you turned around,

6:17

and I think as I recall, we both screamed.

6:19

Yeah, I

6:22

mean, it was very

6:24

surreal because, you know, of

6:27

all places backstage at this drag

6:30

bar in

6:32

Dublin, Ireland, but

6:34

it's just, you know, like the serendipitous

6:37

and beautiful like that. And the story

6:39

goes on, and this is the part where I'm

6:41

kind of nervous, but I have to just like,

6:44

I have to commit. I have to

6:46

follow through. Whenever

6:49

I've told the story, this is how it goes

6:51

on. Later in the evening,

6:54

there was a moment where you and I were together

6:57

kind of separate from everyone else. And

7:00

I was just kind of sitting there and I was

7:02

kind of bashful. I didn't know what

7:04

to like have a conversation

7:06

with you about. And

7:09

I can't even remember how we started talking

7:12

to each other, but you said,

7:15

Jinx,

7:16

you have a gift and

7:18

I want you to protect that gift. And

7:24

I looked you in the eyes and I was like, I absolutely

7:26

will, yes, thank you. But

7:29

I had always hated

7:31

it. And I've always been vocal about how

7:33

much I hate when like people go, my

7:35

instrument, my gift about their voice.

7:38

But from that moment on,

7:41

I took the phrase seriously

7:44

because if Christian Chenoweth

7:46

says protect your gift, that's

7:51

like the Pope saying, don't eat fish

7:53

on Friday or whatever the fuck. Oh,

7:57

I know. Oh, I still don't even remember that.

7:59

problem in either your shoes or costume

8:02

or something. I was like, I really want artists,

8:06

and that's what you are,

8:09

to

8:09

take care of themselves because I want

8:12

people to do what they love to do for as long as they

8:14

can. It brings so much people joy

8:16

and also

8:18

it brings you joy, right?

8:19

I wanted you to do that so I'm glad you

8:22

should get seriously because

8:23

I meant it. I hope it seemed

8:25

like I meant it because I did. I really did.

8:27

Oh, it absolutely did. It's

8:30

like I'm

8:33

a drag queen. I've

8:35

had my party days. My

8:38

20s are behind me. I gotta say, for

8:41

my first time doing a Broadway

8:43

show, eight

8:46

shows a week is no joke. So

8:48

anyone listening who has aspirations

8:52

of being a live entertainer, has

8:55

Broadway ambitions.

8:58

When Kristen says your

9:00

gift,

9:03

you have to treat it like that to even get

9:05

through an eight show week. Let's

9:09

talk about the show that I think

9:12

most significantly brought you into

9:14

my ears at a very young

9:17

age. It's

9:20

quite the show. Wicked.

9:23

You played Glinda or

9:25

Gullinda, depending on the point in

9:27

the show. I cannot tell you, as a drag performer, the

9:30

songs that we choose to

9:41

perform to are so important

9:43

to us and become so important to us. So

9:47

to be able to talk to the person

9:49

whose voice that we've been

9:51

lip-syncing to for years. I can't really

9:53

add ask

10:00

you what was Wicked like?

10:02

But such a big question. I

10:05

can't try to get what you mean. I

10:08

bet I know where you're going with this. I think

10:11

just like you had people

10:14

like me and others that you listened to, I did

10:16

too. And remember,

10:18

I had done Charlie Brown and won a Tony

10:20

for it, and it closed. And I had

10:23

done Annie the Movie. And I still

10:25

wanted that Broadway show. I

10:27

wanted my Les Mis. And one of my fancies.

10:30

Yeah. I just, I'm a big prayer

10:32

person. You know, I love that. I was

10:34

praying God, if you could

10:36

just give me that one show that people

10:38

will have heard of,

10:39

it would be amazing. And

10:43

when we first got the reading, when I first

10:45

got the Stephen Cobb playing, I wanted

10:47

me to do Glenda. It was so

10:49

not Glenda and Elphaba.

10:52

It was really Elphaba,

10:53

Sierra, and Madame Morrible

10:55

as the kind of like the MC opened the show.

10:58

Glenda was just

10:59

a side character of a roommate that comes

11:01

in and sings this fabulous song that Stephen said,

11:03

I only hear your voice in it. I wrote it for you.

11:06

And we did the first reading. And he came and he goes,

11:08

this is going

11:11

to be different. It's going to grow.

11:13

And I said, OK. And then we did

11:15

the second

11:16

reading. And there was more. And there was a

11:18

song between two girls at school. And

11:22

it sort of morphed into what you see today. It

11:24

wasn't me saying, oh, I need a bigger part.

11:28

In fact, when Wicked came around to

11:30

do the show for real, I then offered

11:32

West Wing. And I thought,

11:35

what do I do here? What do

11:37

I do here? Because I loved the West Wing.

11:41

And my gut, the one that you have

11:43

as an artist, the one that many artists listen

11:45

to, said to me,

11:48

there's going to be plenty of times

11:50

to do other things. But this is it.

11:53

And when we opened it in San Francisco,

11:56

I knew it

11:57

was going to hit.

12:00

I didn't know how it would be critically because I knew there

12:02

were some holes in it a little bit

12:04

that I knew the people

12:07

would love it. The love

12:09

story is between the two women. I

12:11

mean, yes, there's a love story component

12:13

with Fierro and

12:15

Nino, Madame Morrible, but the love story

12:17

is between

12:18

the women. Oh, absolutely.

12:21

And it's a celebration of friendship that,

12:23

you know, we've seen multiple

12:26

times throughout the years, but I think this was like,

12:29

in my life, this was

12:31

a very early

12:34

and significant celebration

12:37

of female friendship. Whereas,

12:41

you know, femininity in

12:43

the mainstream is

12:45

so often about, you

12:47

know, her relationship to the man, her

12:50

relationship, you know, like as

12:53

a mother. Like

12:57

when it comes to two women, it's often

13:00

about pitting them against each other. Sure,

13:02

absolutely. And when a friendship

13:05

can be celebrated, that's really,

13:08

really special. And I got to say,

13:10

like us drag queens,

13:13

when the soundtrack of Wicked

13:15

became available, because, you know, I

13:18

was in Portland. I didn't get to see

13:20

it. I've still never seen it live. I

13:22

just feel like I've seen it because

13:25

I've listened to the soundtrack

13:27

so many times. And

13:29

it's one of those soundtracks where if you listen

13:31

to the soundtrack from start to finish, you

13:33

know the whole story and can

13:36

picture it so perfectly in your

13:38

mind. And I'm telling you,

13:40

we were performing to yours and

13:42

Adina's voices. And that

13:44

was like a way we celebrated our

13:47

friendship, you know, it's like, who's

13:49

going to be the Glinda in my

13:51

Defying Gravity tonight? Like I need

13:53

a sister here, you know. Yes,

13:56

and that's why. That was one of the reasons I

13:58

was drawn.

13:59

We had a lot of the themes I love,

14:02

friendship, forgiveness,

14:04

love.

14:06

It had all those, which is what I look for when

14:08

I do a show.

14:11

And this had, you know, my character in that

14:13

had an arc

14:16

that I was looking for too as well. Like

14:18

she starts out really, she's the wicked one. It's

14:22

what makes her good. It's what makes

14:25

her good, the transition. So I loved

14:27

playing that. And I

14:30

didn't know that it would become the juggernaut

14:32

that it

14:32

is today. Happy.

14:35

And doing eight shows a week, let's

14:38

talk about that.

14:39

Because, you know, of Chicago,

14:41

and I know, I know what that

14:43

is, as well. And

14:46

I want to just tell

14:48

you, A, I can't wait to see you in

14:51

it. And B, when

14:53

you said it is no joke, for

14:55

sure it's no joke, like I'm facing doing

14:58

another Broadway show next year.

15:01

But there is also something besides

15:03

living like in them and doing mine, doing

15:06

mine.

15:07

There's also something so gratifying.

15:10

And when you get done, Jinx, you're

15:12

gonna look back and go, I

15:15

did. I actually did

15:17

that. Yeah.

15:19

Aren't you excited?

15:21

I mean, I said

15:23

so many times, but I'm having the

15:25

time of my life. People

15:30

love you in it. Well,

15:33

I am. It's just been such

15:36

a privilege. You know, it's

15:38

a show that's run so long that

15:41

I there's a lot

15:43

of freedom and there's a lot of, excuse

15:48

me, there's a lot of room to play. And

15:51

because no one's stressed out, you

15:53

know, like the

15:55

entire cast and crew just

15:58

has like a certain kind of, you know, ease

16:01

and comfort. So

16:04

when I came in, I of course was a

16:06

bundle of nerves because this was my

16:08

first time performing

16:11

on this platform,

16:13

you know, and in

16:16

so many ways my brain

16:19

was saying, it's all been leading to this, you

16:21

know, but I'm

16:23

also trying to practice just letting each

16:26

moment just be exactly what it is,

16:28

you know, put the weight

16:30

of my whole life onto

16:33

one performance,

16:36

but rather the scope of the whole performance.

16:39

And I'm glad, I'm glad that's

16:41

the gift you're giving yourself too.

16:44

Yeah,

16:45

because it

16:47

has just,

16:48

it's been incredible.

16:56

Picture this, you're sitting at your

16:58

Thanksgiving dinner and you surprise

17:00

your family by starting an argument,

17:02

I mean discussion in a new

17:05

language, because with BAPL

17:08

you start speaking a new language

17:09

17:13

out yourself as a complete noob, right?

17:27

Well, BAPL makes that possible.

17:30

slash hijinks.

20:26

Kristen, you have not

20:29

only appeared on

20:32

stage multiple times in

20:34

multiple soundtracks,

20:37

you are the pint-sized

20:40

diva, yes? Yes,

20:43

or pocket diva, depends on

20:46

who you're asking.

20:50

You've also acted in

20:52

countless television shows, movies.

20:56

I feel like if you

20:59

are someone who grew up in the 90s

21:01

watching sitcoms as I did, Kristen

21:04

Chenoweth was everywhere. You

21:06

were on Frasier for a moment.

21:13

Oh my gosh, I feel like I had a whole list in

21:15

my brain planned before this phone

21:17

call started. Now I'm looking at you and they've all

21:19

gone out of my head.

21:21

I've done a lot of television. I mean,

21:24

between West Wing

21:27

and Glee

21:27

and GCB and

21:30

it goes on. I can't even remember.

21:33

Pushing Daisies. I

21:39

was trying to, I

21:42

feel like you've just always

21:44

been there in my life. But yes,

21:47

Wicked was the juggernaut for

21:49

a long time. But now

21:53

we've got Schmigadoon. I watched

21:56

it for the first time. pretty

22:00

much from start to finish in a van

22:03

ride through the UK

22:05

countryside when we were on a cabaret

22:08

tour. So

22:11

such an incredible show and

22:13

I'm so excited for season two.

22:16

The photos have

22:18

just been released of you as

22:21

Mrs. Lovett. You look incredible.

22:26

What has this project been like

22:28

for you? It looks like

22:30

you're having a blast. We

22:33

are because I kind

22:35

of liken it to

22:38

SNL but for music theater. We

22:40

are a troupe of us who did

22:42

season one which

22:44

is all of the golden age golden

22:48

era age musicals and our

22:50

tipping our heads at that and that was incredible

22:53

playing Mildred. I mean she

22:55

was just a tight

22:57

ass you know. It's

23:00

fun to play

23:00

and then of course you have that incredibly

23:03

long patter song that I had to do in one take.

23:06

That was really challenging and

23:08

also incredibly fun and loved it and

23:10

this season is called Schmigadoon

23:13

season two but it's Chicago.

23:15

So we're going on to

23:17

different eras. One that

23:20

you understand very well now. So it's the 60s

23:23

70s you know Sondheim

23:25

shorts and in this

23:28

season I get to play

23:31

definitely Miss Lovett but I'm playing a

23:33

combo platter. I think I'm the only one

23:36

in the cast. I'm also playing

23:39

Miss Hannigan. So Miss Hannigan

23:41

and Lovett imagine if they were molded together.

23:43

It's

23:45

who I am. Yeah.

23:46

You know every drag queen it's

23:49

going to be another era of every

23:51

drag queen performing

23:53

to your voice because that

23:56

sounds like I mean I sing

23:58

live mostly these days. But if I

24:00

still lip synced, I would be

24:02

so... I'm gonna just

24:04

have to bring back lip syncing for my

24:07

act because this sounds right up

24:09

my alley. You're gonna have to do this

24:11

at great phone...

24:14

Well, there's Mrs. Levitt Sondheim asked,

24:16

very difficult but fun.

24:17

Worst Brats is called

24:21

Worst Brats in Town. And

24:24

then, you know, and then there's... This

24:26

is just...

24:28

It was so fun because Alan Cumming is

24:31

sweetie-esque and I love

24:33

it-esque and then we have a... I have an

24:35

orphanage and it goes on. I can't get to play

24:38

but

24:38

it's fun.

24:40

It sounds like... I mean, that is like

24:43

so incredibly up my alley. Kristen,

24:46

I've brought it up multiple times but

24:49

I think it's so powerful.

24:52

The voices we hear growing

24:54

up, the voices kind of like

24:56

direct the way

24:59

we understand music

25:02

or the way that we access music. For

25:06

musical theater nerds, it's like

25:08

those stories that like penetrate

25:11

through whatever device

25:13

that we're listening to it on

25:16

and it like touches the inside

25:18

of us and we feel like, how did this person

25:21

I don't even know knows my soul? I

25:25

get it. What were the voices

25:29

like that for

25:29

you growing up? What were the

25:32

singers and performances that inspired

25:34

you?

25:35

I mean, for sure. I'm gonna go

25:37

with Carol Burnett. It's

25:41

just that we did a special for

25:43

her 90th birthday the other night. It'll air

25:45

on her birthday on NBC

25:48

and that was so cool to be there with

25:50

her and Julie Andrews, another voice that

25:53

I heard and I came to understand

25:55

through Julie that you could be an

25:57

incredible soprano and also be incredibly fun. funny.

26:00

Yeah. And Carol

26:02

is, you know, Dolly

26:04

Pardon for sure. And

26:07

Sally Field. I'm all over

26:10

the map for sure. For sure,

26:12

Judy. But there's a Christian singer named

26:14

Sandy Patty. So I'd have to go with those top

26:18

five and not to include a special

26:21

check mark with Madeline Kahn. So you can

26:23

see they're all

26:25

there's something they all have in common, which

26:27

is humor. I love

26:29

that. I love that.

26:31

Yeah, you are. You

26:35

have a master's as an opera

26:37

singer. You're like a bona

26:40

fide opera singer. But we know

26:42

you as a Broadway diva. And

26:45

your voice is we, you know, like

26:47

it's incredible. It's objectively

26:51

incredible. It's a superpower. You are

26:53

a superhuman. We are lucky

26:55

to have the grace of a demigod, which

26:57

reminds me you were fantastic on American

27:00

Gods. We can circle back to

27:02

that. But, you

27:05

know, I

27:06

love singing.

27:08

It brings me so much joy. And

27:11

to be a good singer, you

27:13

mentioned living like a nun. You know,

27:16

I'm like fully in the throes

27:18

of an eight show week. So I'm like, I do

27:21

the same thing every day. It's my I wake

27:23

up with my juice routine. And

27:26

then I handle any work that day, but

27:28

I'm trying to take it easy until showtime.

27:30

And then it's warm up, do the

27:32

show, and then go home and go right

27:35

back to just like taking it easy.

27:37

And

27:39

it's like,

27:41

and I'm very, very happy because I'm

27:43

very content in the work. But you

27:45

sacrifice a lot, you

27:47

know, and what makes

27:50

the sacrifice worth it

27:52

for you? Because your voice

27:55

has it is

27:58

like a laser guided missile

28:00

Miss Chenoweth and

28:03

I'm sure you have it insured somehow.

28:08

Well first of all thank you. I think

28:11

each of us has our challenge

28:14

right like you know how much rest you need.

28:16

I think for me especially when I'm concertizing

28:19

which I do a lot which I'm doing right now because

28:23

I don't just see music theater and I do widget

28:26

as well opera and and

28:29

our American art and country and

28:31

all of it that I love. That's the challenge for

28:33

me is to keep all of them

28:35

going and so therefore that means a lot of

28:37

sense

28:38

and I love to talk so it's really hard

28:41

but especially when I'm getting on a

28:43

plane I was doing the COVID dance

28:45

long before COVID with the mask and the hand sanitizer.

28:48

Like I was doing that

28:50

already. I used to wear latex gloves. I

28:53

still wear like a little furry just because I'm

28:56

a little bit of a germaphobe but I

28:59

have to get like eight

29:01

hours sleep. That's been the dragon that I

29:03

chase. It's really hard because when

29:05

this rest the throat everything

29:08

else falls in place

29:09

for me.

29:11

Another challenge for me is finding

29:13

time to like warm up the body. Finding

29:15

time to really and get back in shape and because

29:18

I'm on on a kind of constant tour a lot

29:21

it's easy to let that go and just concentrate

29:24

on the voice but as you know the whole instrument

29:27

is the body, the voice, the mind, the spirit.

29:30

Finding time to

29:32

just chill and forgive yourself

29:35

for not having to do something all the time. But

29:37

I still study. I warm up. I

29:39

have a pretty high

29:44

work effect for myself. I

29:47

still warm up. This voice

29:50

and instrument is just like going to the

29:52

gym. I've got to keep

29:55

it in shape

29:56

and that's the hardest part and

29:58

the flying.

29:59

So I'm sure you're traveling

30:02

in flight, like your body takes a beating a little

30:04

bit. And that's why we get paid

30:06

because we travel, right? That's why we get

30:09

the money, but also at what cost?

30:11

So it's at the constant

30:12

look

30:14

at work-life balance, which I suck at, I'm

30:16

trying to get better.

30:19

But I really think that's important.

30:22

But I still have that great

30:24

desire to be great. And I don't mean fame,

30:26

I mean to be great at

30:29

what I do. I

30:31

inspire myself and I inspire others to

30:33

be great at what I do. And all of

30:35

that just comes from the play of what are

30:37

you willing to sacrifice? Yeah.

30:40

The sacrifice

30:42

has been weddings, funerals,

30:44

graduations. But

30:47

I know my family and my closest friends know

30:49

that

30:51

I'm there. When push comes to shove, I'm

30:53

there. And

30:56

while it's face time, it makes it a little bit easier.

30:59

But has it been sacrificed? Yes,

31:01

but because I do feel it's,

31:03

I didn't get the gift to, you know,

31:07

be a great driver or

31:09

an accountant or I got this gift.

31:12

And this

31:12

has requirements.

31:14

And I want to keep doing

31:16

it. So the sacrifice has been well

31:18

worth it. Has it been hard? Sometimes? Absolutely.

31:22

Adalé Parton sings this song about that

31:24

very thing called sacrifice. You should listen to

31:26

it. It's all about that.

31:29

But if not us, who would love to do

31:31

it, then who? You know, then who?

31:34

Yeah. You know, I've

31:38

been thinking a lot about the

31:41

show on the 20th century,

31:44

which... Favorite.

31:49

You mentioned Madeline Kahn. She's

31:53

on the original soundtrack of On

31:55

the 20th Century. There's

31:58

a song... Repent originally

32:01

sung by imaging coca is the one

32:04

I'm most familiar with yeah,

32:07

and I've been thinking about it a lot lately

32:09

because I'm 35.

32:13

I'm kind of loving just Give

32:16

it giving way to the lifestyle

32:20

of an eight show week I kind of

32:22

love it, you know, like if you

32:24

had asked me to do this ten years ago I would

32:26

have been like you want me to stop going out and partying

32:29

and you

32:31

know like so there's this line

32:34

in the song repent that I keep thinking about

32:36

and It's like until

32:38

the night I saw the

32:40

light and heard salvation's call I'm

32:43

so glad I didn't hear it until I'd done

32:45

it all, you know I'm so

32:47

glad that I did that in

32:50

my 20s So now when I'm

32:52

sitting around, you know resting

32:54

my voice playing video games instead

32:57

of being out with my drag sisters That's

32:59

a club, you know Nothing

33:02

dollars and G strings and stuff. I

33:05

do like have the memories, you

33:07

know, I did the fun stuff

33:09

but It is definitely

33:12

like, you know, I I'll

33:14

be candid with you a

33:17

big thing that makes me Terrified

33:19

of missing a show in my limited run

33:22

is I know from doing

33:24

the stage door signing every night that

33:27

people are flying in

33:30

from across the country

33:32

from Different countries,

33:35

you know, and I just want to make sure Especially,

33:39

you know like with the with

33:42

the state of the world, you know when

33:44

when these audience members

33:46

have treated themselves to a moment

33:50

of levity and joy I want

33:52

to make sure I'm there for that. So it

33:55

definitely felt like You

33:58

know work well well

33:59

worth the sacrifice.

34:02

You touched on that. I always think of that too. Like

34:05

there's some little girl, little boy that this

34:07

is their first Broadway

34:09

show maybe ever and I

34:12

want to show up and I kind of get

34:14

mad when I'm like a little under. I'm like dang it

34:16

because I want the best and you do have to

34:18

forgive yourself to know that not every

34:20

show is going to be like

34:22

you know but you you you show up and

34:24

you get a very best you can for that day and

34:27

I'm just so glad that you've had this experience

34:29

jinx because there is

34:31

a misinterpretation

34:34

of music

34:36

theater and Broadway

34:37

that we just show up we give our

34:39

jazz hands and it happens. There's

34:42

so much more skill to it

34:44

than that and that's why

34:47

it's sweet

34:49

when people say I want to do Broadway

34:51

one day but when they actually can like

34:53

you actually can do

34:55

it

34:56

we have a lot of respect for that you know

34:58

as Broadway people have a lot of respect for that

35:01

and I you know

35:03

again

35:03

it separates the men from the boys

35:06

I hate.

35:06

The week from

35:08

the chas. You

35:11

know I've just I really have been I I

35:13

absolutely love the cast I love the show

35:15

I've always

35:26

loved Chicago but

35:29

I'm also very excited to take this

35:32

into other avenues

35:34

of work you know like I

35:38

not just like my other avenues of live

35:40

entertainment but when

35:42

you're like when you're open-minded

35:44

to letting one experience inform

35:47

another you know everything plays

35:50

into the next project you might do. I want

35:53

to talk to you about

35:54

American Gods which

35:57

your performance as a

36:00

Ostara.

36:04

Oh my gosh, one of my favorite

36:06

reveals ever in television.

36:09

You just turning around that

36:12

pile, that giant pile

36:14

of hair. Your Easter

36:16

bonnet fascinator. You're

36:19

so stunning. You

36:22

played a lot of mystical

36:25

magical characters. Let's

36:27

talk about Ostara.

36:31

I love her.

36:33

Brian Fuller, who wrote Pushing Daisy, said,

36:36

you know, when it first, when he first started

36:38

writing it, he said, look, I want you to play Easter. And

36:40

I said,

36:41

I read the book. I said, read the book, but remember

36:44

it's described very differently. And she was described

36:46

so differently in the book. And I said, I can't play Easter.

36:48

I'll be, I'll be shocked in Times Square.

36:52

People that love the book, you know, they want to,

36:54

and they're total uproar at first, at

36:56

first. And then when

36:58

my episode aired, it was

37:01

like, oh, people really

37:04

opened themselves up to this

37:06

version. And I think one

37:08

of the things that I love, first of all, I love

37:10

Brian

37:10

Fuller. And one of the things

37:12

that he did so beautifully here is,

37:14

you

37:15

know, all the Jesus's that he included

37:18

with inclusive with

37:21

and, and what do you want to say the devil

37:23

or not with the other two knuckleheads

37:26

in the show, which are incredible. And

37:29

just getting to have

37:30

the vision of how she would look.

37:34

I wanted that hair to be almost gram

37:37

like. Because is

37:39

she, is she

37:43

of God? Is she Wiccan?

37:45

Is she, is she the devil?

37:47

Like, who is she? I wanted that

37:50

all around me. So you're kind

37:52

of always guessing about her. And,

37:55

you know, I don't know what Brian always does is that I'm

37:57

working with bunnies, last pushing babies.

37:59

with let's see pigs horses um always

38:03

has me working with and i

38:04

had a bunch of bees a bunch of bees around

38:06

me in um as a star but

38:09

i love what he did with with having

38:11

all the jesuses the albino jesus the

38:14

black the latin jesus but you know

38:16

just the normal jesus and that also

38:19

goes into how do we see god how do we

38:21

see jesus and can

38:23

he look like maybe this or what about

38:25

this or

38:25

maybe he's all of us which i love

38:28

um and so it was really interesting

38:30

to get a little heat from my own christian

38:32

community because i thought

38:35

you are you all are missing the point

38:37

there's people that i really

38:40

like to preach like i love

38:42

to talk about my faith and stuff but

38:45

this was a great way to talk about like we

38:47

are all a little bit of everything

38:50

and yeah that's the basis of christianity

38:52

i believe in for sure i mean that's no

38:54

doubt but i just love the way brian

38:56

did it and to be in such a beloved

38:59

show about a book that people freaked out

39:01

about and then the heartbreak for

39:03

me was the next season

39:05

i was to do three or four episodes

39:09

and i was so excited about it and

39:11

um brian

39:13

left the show and that's like my

39:16

my person you know he's like person

39:19

and he leaves the show i'm

39:21

not stupid i'm i'm not

39:23

because

39:24

that's my loyalty and

39:26

then they were like no no you know here's

39:29

some more money i was like no you

39:33

know not all of hollywood is just about that

39:35

it's really about for me relationships

39:39

and now i'm gonna be able to lay my

39:41

head on my pillow at night but

39:43

i saw that the beautiful show that

39:45

they continued and i was so proud i like love ricky

39:48

i love everybody in it but

39:50

i was glad i got to um end

39:53

the season with that i don't know if you remember the shot

39:55

where she's turning the earth black

39:58

oh yeah it's incredible

40:01

I fought so hard. So Brian was in the writing

40:03

room and there was a shot where she's and

40:05

they were just gonna shoot it from the front. I said no no

40:08

no bring the crane in you gotta have her

40:10

with earth below her you've done to I mean I

40:13

took his part like you know

40:15

they did it and and the

40:17

whole look of it was gorgeous Just like

40:19

pushing Davis had it look this

40:22

look to and so

40:24

It's bright for

40:30

You

40:37

You are

40:40

You are a queer icon And

40:43

it's not just for one thing.

40:45

It's not just for Glinda

40:48

the Good Witch It's not just

40:50

for you know your

40:53

your impact on Broadway your impact

40:55

on film or television It's

40:57

all of it and you know

41:00

you've you've brought up your faith and

41:02

this is I Hate to put

41:04

you on any kind of spot, but

41:06

I'm how do you know how do you navigate

41:09

being a person of

41:10

faith?

41:12

Currently well faith

41:14

is being I would dare say

41:17

bastardized as a means

41:20

of To Yeah,

41:24

just spread hatred when I think

41:26

that that's not the message

41:29

of faith and The

41:31

message I receive from

41:33

people like you who celebrate their

41:36

faith with positivity Rather

41:38

than with an iron fist.

41:40

Let's say The

41:44

navigation has not always been fun.

41:46

It's been sometimes hurtful

41:49

and hard Nobody wants to

41:51

be judged by their own and

41:57

Also misinterpreted by the group that loves them

42:00

I

42:01

know that in the third grade an instance

42:03

happened with my friend Jackie and

42:06

I talk about this story a lot because it's

42:08

when I first remember

42:09

having like this

42:11

need

42:13

to help. He was being called a

42:15

dyke

42:15

and like beat up and stuff. She was my friend.

42:18

We walked to school together and

42:19

all bets were

42:21

off though when she bought my same coat from Target and I was like,

42:23

girl, are we going

42:26

to answer? Anyway, but

42:29

I came home. I asked my mom why people are

42:31

calling her that.

42:33

My mom explained

42:35

to me, I said, what's that word mean? She

42:37

said, it's when two women like

42:39

each other.

42:40

I said, like,

42:42

I like Jackie. She said, no, like, like

42:44

you like

42:45

Joey or whatever. And I

42:47

said, oh, okay.

42:49

I mean, you know, I'm in a tribal belt at

42:51

this point. And she was

42:54

in our house. We won't use that word in

42:56

our house.

42:57

We will

42:57

be friends with who you want to be friends with and that

43:00

will be tolerated. So a

43:02

couple days later, I mean, promptly

43:04

went up and people were kicking dirt on her.

43:06

I remember and I just went in.

43:09

I don't know who what I thought I was going to do. I mean, I was always

43:11

the brunt, right? I just

43:14

want to stop it. Stop it right now, you know. And

43:17

I knew then, like, there

43:20

was something interesting when you said,

43:22

and

43:23

what I grew up came to understand too,

43:25

when you said Jesus and

43:27

also in the same words, LGBTQIA,

43:30

why that's so offensive,

43:33

I couldn't understand. So

43:36

it was

43:37

no accident that,

43:40

you know, my best friends, a lot of them were gay,

43:43

are gay and trans

43:45

and everything else. And I never, I guess

43:48

I just thought, what would

43:49

Jesus do? Or what would he say? And

43:51

that's what I go off. And for the lack

43:53

of me in the Bible, I've looked and you just can't find

43:56

Jesus going, I love everyone except.

43:58

Yeah.

43:59

Yeah. And I don't like the trends and

44:01

I don't like this, but I love everyone. And,

44:03

you know, but he's didn't have that.

44:06

You know, he loves me the way I'm built. And

44:08

is it a sin that I'm four 11? And what

44:11

if that was a sin? I couldn't change that. That's

44:13

how he put me together.

44:14

And so that's the way I feel about this

44:17

community. And

44:19

it's not just Broadway. It's been

44:21

since I was a little kid and I will be

44:23

that way till I die. And I think that's probably

44:25

why I really, when I saw

44:27

Tammy Fay have a

44:30

gay person on her show for the very first

44:32

time, who was happy to be battling AIDS

44:34

at the time, which was so scary in the

44:36

eighties. But I thought,

44:38

she doesn't care and she's doing

44:40

a Christian TV show. And so I just

44:42

went with that.

44:44

I just went with that. And that's

44:46

my authentic truth and people judge me

44:48

for it, sure. But that's okay.

44:51

Thank you. But,

44:52

you know, just like what you're

44:54

saying, oh my gosh, it's kind

44:57

of, it's so perfect. Just

44:59

like what you're saying, you saw Tammy Fay

45:01

at this moment and we've now seen

45:04

this moment depicted in documentary. We've

45:06

seen this moment depicted in film by

45:09

beautiful performances, I must say.

45:12

And this inspired you and

45:16

this is something you took

45:18

into your life and hence your career.

45:22

And you have no doubt

45:24

then inspired other young artists

45:27

who navigate

45:29

being a person of faith and

45:32

having so many people out there

45:34

telling you what that means, which

45:37

is contradictory to

45:39

how your heart feels. I

45:41

just keep thinking about like, you know,

45:44

lately I keep thinking

45:46

about how the theme

45:48

of every movie, the theme

45:50

of every like wonderful

45:54

TV show or movie

45:56

or musical or whatever

45:58

it is. usually

46:00

like love who you love,

46:04

be yourself, like celebrate

46:07

your differences. It's like from X-Men

46:10

to the Fox and the Hound

46:12

Dog to you know

46:15

like the Nutty Professor,

46:16

you know like it's every movie.

46:19

So then how do we turn around and

46:21

turn on each other? Like

46:24

when we as a society celebrate

46:28

togetherness and acceptance in

46:30

all of our art, how do we then

46:33

turn around and do the opposite?

46:36

It still baffles me. It means he

46:38

jinx and also what scares me and this is one

46:40

of the reasons why I really speak

46:42

out on it a lot. And I get disappointed

46:44

in my Christian brothers and sisters that

46:47

are judgmental. There's a lot of them who are not by

46:50

the way. They're out there. They're

46:52

like

46:53

me. It's not always easy to speak up

46:55

though. I think what I'm hating

46:57

to see is the suicide rate

46:59

go up. I don't, I started

47:02

seeing that you know my home state and also

47:04

you know I worked with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir

47:06

for so many years I wouldn't sing with them

47:09

and then when they agreed to

47:11

some of my stipulations to do the special

47:14

and having you know Broadway

47:16

Cares Equity Rights AIDS with their

47:18

me being able to talk about you know love

47:21

and acceptance, not tolerance,

47:23

acceptance of all and they agreed

47:25

to it and then not long after that accepting

47:28

their young especially men

47:30

back into the church being allowed to. Now

47:32

it's not perfect yet. I'm looking to make

47:34

little steps. Little steps I can say

47:37

good

47:37

good.

47:39

I want to leave the world in a better place

47:41

than I thought than I found it and

47:44

I want to continue on people like Tammy say

47:46

and I want to continue on

47:50

making kids feel that

47:53

they're not wrong, that they're

47:55

going no,

47:56

that

47:58

they have to live an inauthentic

47:59

life to be to fit in into a

48:02

normal

48:03

quote unquote, life-strand. And I will

48:05

have to move in.

48:07

And so as long as I'm here,

48:09

and I love singing at church, and

48:12

my pastor on Sunday had a great message

48:14

called Love Wins. Because love always

48:16

does win. But

48:19

why do we make it so hard on ourselves to

48:22

make that win? It's beyond me. And even

48:24

with lawmakers and sort of what some

48:26

of the community is facing right

48:28

now, do we have to make a law like, really?

48:31

Do we have to spend money to

48:32

tell people they're wrong? Are

48:34

they

48:35

ugly or sinners? Are they going to hurt children?

48:38

It's actually fascinating to me and also

48:40

very harmful to society. So

48:44

as long as I'm here, I

48:47

will do that. And I get asked a lot of time, why does it matter

48:49

so much to you? You're not gay.

48:52

You're not trans. I'm like, it matters

48:54

because I'm human. I'm

48:57

a human. It should matter to you because

48:59

you're a human too. Sir.

49:02

Anyway,

49:05

enough of my preaching. Nay,

49:07

I mean,

49:07

that Kristen, that was so beautifully

49:11

worded.

49:13

That was just absolutely perfect.

49:16

I mean, I kind of feel like,

49:18

let's move on to a cheerier

49:21

topic because we're not going to top

49:23

what you just said. That was. I

49:26

mean, you're

49:30

just such a lovely soul. And it just

49:32

shows through in everything

49:34

that you do. And

49:38

the first time I met you, I almost fainted.

49:41

The second time was backstage

49:44

at the Christmas Queen's or Drag

49:48

Christmas. I

49:50

can't remember. It was some combination of

49:53

words. I'm

49:55

always so fascinated. Y'all make it. I

49:57

really just don't like, how can I achieve?

50:00

the eye makeup. Well everything

50:03

we're doing to our face is to

50:06

trick the eye into thinking

50:09

we look more like you. I'm so excited

50:11

for my listeners to hear

50:15

you

50:23

speak on everything we've spoke on

50:26

and I have to imagine

50:28

that if they are wanting to hear

50:31

more of your anecdotes

50:33

like we've been talking

50:35

today they can pick up your

50:37

book I'm No Philosopher

50:40

but I Got Thoughts. Many meditations

50:43

for saints sinners and the

50:45

rest of us. You

50:48

wrote a book it wasn't enough

50:50

that you have a master's

50:53

an opera your

50:56

what is it three-fourths of the way to an egot

50:58

can you tell us a bit

51:00

about your book yes I love that you brought

51:03

it up thank

51:07

you

51:09

so much this is

51:12

my third book the first one I was

51:14

in 2009 a little bit wicked it

51:16

was in biography and I loved

51:19

it it was hard and

51:21

it did great New York time bestseller

51:23

it was awesome and then I wrote the children's book

51:26

at the beginning of a shutdown and then that

51:28

was so fun I thought what else can I write

51:30

and then I was what what I was like

51:33

and I'm a big journaler and

51:36

I started looking at my old journals and as

51:38

I journal and maybe this could

51:41

be something here for a book or just little

51:43

topics I take you know I have each

51:46

chapter is thoughts on something

51:48

thoughts on love connection

51:51

harmony screwing up loss

51:55

all of it and I want people

51:57

to read it knowing that

51:59

conception here is that it's not always

52:02

happy, pretty,

52:03

but it's alive. And

52:05

how

52:06

the roller coaster of

52:08

life has put me on things

52:10

hard, how I screwed up,

52:13

the funny things that the way I

52:15

look at life that cracked me up, I don't know

52:17

if it cracks anybody else up, but it

52:19

kind of became that book. And it

52:22

was meant to be an inspirational book.

52:25

In the bookstores, I've noticed this under so help.

52:29

I'm like,

52:32

I'm really proud of the people that

52:34

are reading it and what they're

52:36

getting from it. There's

52:38

a chapter in the

52:40

book where I read, I

52:42

read one of my most dark darkest

52:45

times in my journal, I

52:47

printed it in the book, because I wanted people

52:49

to see that like, it's not just

52:52

them, it's not just you Jinx,

52:54

not just

52:55

him down the street or whatever, all of us

52:57

go through a lot of crap. I have anxiety and

53:00

that's not something people would think that I would

53:02

have or even depression and what that

53:04

looks like for me and how I handle it. And also

53:07

who's inspired me and how there's a beautiful

53:09

quote in the book that I love and I live by

53:11

it actually, it's Elizabeth Edwards, who

53:15

was married to that politician

53:18

many years ago. And she writes,

53:20

she stood in the storm and

53:23

when the wind did not blow her way, she

53:25

adjusted her sails. And

53:28

I find myself looking at

53:30

life in a little bit different way. When you

53:32

stand in the storm and you just adjust

53:34

your sails a little bit, it

53:36

can look a little bit better. It might not be perfect

53:38

or the way you imagine. And that

53:40

even goes with good stuff,

53:42

you know, a storm of greatness

53:45

and how you handle it with grace or,

53:47

you know,

53:49

loving kindness, how are you going to deal

53:51

with it? How you adjust yourself, not to

53:54

hurt somebody else. And the

53:57

book is

53:57

along those lines and I'm really, really proud of it.

53:59

I'm proud of it. I love, I've

54:02

been going to Target's

54:04

and Burns and Nobles and secretly

54:07

filming myself sign copies that

54:10

are there. And then I say, tell me who

54:12

gets this random signed copy. And the people,

54:14

they're just buying them up. And that's

54:16

just a hobby now. And first of all, I love Target.

54:19

So I love going there

54:21

and just like,

54:22

I just love Target. So I'm their main impression.

54:24

It's amazing. I am,

54:26

I got it for my grandma. I'm

54:31

a shopper. I can go into

54:33

a drug store to pick up one thing and

54:35

leave there with two full bags. Listen,

54:40

it's about finding the balance and life.

54:43

I hear you, Kristen. And

54:45

also, I go in there and I look at their lash section,

54:49

which is getting bigger. I'm like, I

54:51

love finding the right lash. And we're

54:53

always looking for the right gene. I'm looking for the right lash. I

54:56

hear you. I also love, oh

54:59

my gosh, one thing that's

55:01

been great is

55:05

a silver lining of some dark times

55:08

is that there are so

55:10

many new smudge proof

55:13

lipsticks and lip glosses and

55:15

stuff because we all were wearing

55:17

face masks and sometimes

55:20

still are wearing face masks. So there's

55:22

a silver lining. A silver lining.

55:26

Kristen, I have compulsory questions.

55:29

I ask every guest, are

55:31

you ready to answer these compulsory

55:33

questions? So ready. The

55:37

first one is always, who

55:39

is your celebrity crush today?

55:44

Allison Janney.

55:46

That is an amazing

55:49

answer. Oh,

55:51

I don't know if you've seen the movie,

55:54

dropped it gorgeous, but it is iconic.

55:58

OK, OK.

55:59

And

56:02

Kirsty

56:02

Alley was a friend of mine, and

56:05

so we didn't agree on everything. I loved her very much.

56:07

And Kat, you know, it's Katina

56:09

and Jimmy is like my bestie. But like,

56:12

come on, drop dead George, I wasn't

56:14

dead. The

56:18

next question I believe we've

56:20

already touched on, it's are you spiritual?

56:22

I think we're good. The

56:26

final question is, and

56:27

I love asking this too, actors

56:31

and singers, but

56:32

what's your go-to karaoke song?

56:35

Gosh.

56:37

The Rose. I

56:41

think if I'm tired, it's

56:42

basically got about five

56:44

minutes.

56:45

Yeah, yeah. And

56:47

it's so slow that you have time

56:50

to remember and plan

56:52

and route your way through it so

56:54

that you can win karaoke. I

56:59

have never felt so seen as when

57:01

on Girls 5eva that

57:05

character said, well, how else would

57:07

you know who wins karaoke? Thank

57:16

you so much for being my

57:18

guest today. It's just, it's

57:20

a dream come true to have gotten to have this conversation

57:23

with you. And it's why we started

57:25

this podcast so that randomly

57:27

on a Wednesday in New York, in

57:31

the middle of the evening, I could just

57:33

have a candid conversation with someone

57:35

who has impacted my life since,

57:39

as far back as what matters.

57:44

Amen, amen. Also,

57:47

thank you for having me. I'm super proud

57:49

of you. And I can't

57:51

wait to see you in the show because I am coming.

57:54

Wonderful. Wonderful

57:56

rest of your night. Love you. Love

57:59

you too.

57:59

Bye.

58:01

And thank you

58:02

all so much for listening to
