I learned that a lot of these stories are exaggerated or have fake numbers to embellish the lives of these outlaws. They aren’t quite the villains someone would assume from just their crimes, and yet they’re also not quite the heroes romanticized in popular media. The podcast was a storytelling podcast, with occasional interventions in between to remind the audience what’s true, what’s false, and what is speculated upon. The real quotes, disclaimers, and music kept me engaged by keeping the stories grounded in reality and interesting. The added sound effects of gunshots and horses added a lot to it as well. I also liked having these stories and myths debunked. Billy the Kid is a Western legend, but a lot of his numbers are embellished. He didn’t kill even close to 21 men and wasn’t as heroic as talked about. This podcast kept the stories as real as possible and kept me engaged by making me wonder what else about Western legends wasn’t true. I really enjoyed this podcast and will definitely listen to the next gunslingers and outlaws episode. It was very enjoyable and definitely felt shorter than an hour. I didn’t feel confused or lost at any points in the podcast, which I feel like happens a lot in classes or videos explaining history topics. I also like that they focused more on the stories instead of historical impacts and context. It was just told for the love of storytelling and debunking of embellishment. They kept it simple, easy to follow along, and very detailed all at the same time.
